        Paying critical attention to the concept of ‘transportation’ and ‘circulation’, this essay examines the collection status of vocabulary in bilingual dictionaries of various languages in early-modern East Asia. By doing so, it follows the trajectory of translingual practice, and clarifies a part of the transition of modern East Asian civilization. The research method in this study is as follows. First, it confirms the concepts of ‘交通 (kotsu, kyothong)’ and ‘流通 (ryutsu, yuthong)’ by defining a monolingual dictionary in Japanese and Korean. Next, it selects words representing each concept after investigating the translation (English) of a modern Japanese-English dictionary and Korean-English dictionary. The translated words corresponding to those representing the concepts are extracted from some major early-modern bilingual dictionaries of Japanese and Korean. It, then, analyzes the aspect of changes from the late 19th century to the early 20th century by looking into the translations of those extracted (Japanese and Korean). Based on the above-mentioned research and analysis, it reveals significant developmental characteristics in translating the concept of ‘transportation’ and ‘circulation’ in East Asia.

        漢語 어휘집 《譯語類解》는 중인층인 역관의 외국어 학습을 돕는다는 뚜렷한 목적을 가지고 1682 년에 간행됐다. 그런데 이 책은 주된 사용층이 아닌 조선후기의 사대부 지식인 사이에서도 종종 언급되었다. 본고에서는 이러한 의외의 현상을 類別하고 각각의 사대부 독자가 지닌 자국어에 대한 태도를 사회언어학의 측면에서 접근하고자 한다. 權萬은 변방의 지식인이라는 조건에 기인한 문화적 소외감으로부터 출발하여, 중화의 음률을 터득하고 제대로 된 한시를 쓰는 것을 자신의 목표로 설정했다. 그 과정에서 권만은 《역어유해》와 《노걸대》 등의 중국어 학습서를 접했으나, 이처럼 당대의 漢語 현실을 재현한 결과물은 그를 만족시키지 못했다. 권만의 구도 안에서 한어는 중화의 언어와 오랑캐의 변종적 언어라는 위계로 나뉘며, 그가 참조한 《역어유해》는 후자의 영역에 해당한다고 간주됐다. 그는 16세기 초에 간행된 《사성통 해》로 회귀하여 正音, 즉 동아시아 문화권에 통용되는 표준음을 찾고자 했다. 李瀷의 인용법은 그가 권만과는 상당히 다른 시각으로 《역어유해》를 접했음을 보여준다. 이익은 조선 땅에서 재배되는 특정한 식물의 구체적 특성을 기술하고 이름을 밝히기 위해 ‘玉薥薥’(옥수수) 과 같은 작물의 이름을 《역어유해》로부터 추출했다. 권만이 漢語의 발음기호를 확인하기 위해 《역 어유해》라는 사전을 검색했다면, 이익은 해당 어휘의 지시 내용에 주목했다. 安鼎福은 스승의 시각을 계승하여 《역어유해》에서 ‘饅頭’라는 한어 어휘를 검색하고 그것이 ‘상화’라는 조선 음식에 상응함을 확인했다. 丁若鏞과 金邁淳에게 주된 관심의 대상은 조선의 고유어 어휘가 아니라 자국에서 사용되는 수많은 한자어들이다. 중국 고전 한문에 뿌리를 둔 이 어휘들이 근본에서 벗어나지 않고 원의대로 정확히 사용되고 있는지의 문제가 이들에게는 대단히 중요했다. 이 구도 안에서 중국의 한자어와 조선의 한자어는 상하의 위계질서로부터 벗어나기 어렵다. 李德懋와 李圭景이 공유한 언어학적 구도는, 정약용이나 김매순의 그것과 분명히 구별된다. 이덕 무는 중립적인 시선으로 동아시아 각국의 언어를 검토하며 자국어에 대한 지식의 체계를 만들어나 갔고, 각국의 언어 사이에 위계를 부여하거나 질서를 회복하려는 의지를 작동시키지 않았다. 이규경 은 조부의 언어학적 구도를 계승하였을 뿐 아니라 자국어에 대한 구체적인 자각이라는 점에서 보다 확장된 시야를 확보할 수 있었던바, 이는 그가 적극적으로 수집하여 제시하고 있는 고유어 物名의 상세한 목록을 통해 확인된다.

        The study investigated how task types such as input or output could affect Korean EFL learners’ vocabulary learning at both short- and long-term periods after treatment. Forty two college students in Korea were randomly assigned to one of the four tasks. Based on Involvement Load Hypothesis, each task induced the same or different involvement loads: Read without glossary (Input), Gap with glossary (Input & Output), Gap without glossary (Input & Output), and Sentence and write (Output). Receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge was measured right after the treatment and a month later. The output-oriented tasks were found to be more effective than the input-oriented tasks regardless of type of vocabulary knowledge. The current study concluded that modalities such as input or output other than task-induced involvement load can contribute to Korean EFL learners’ vocabulary learning. The pedagogical discussion will be made at the conclusion.

        This paper examined factors affecting Korean EFL learners’ word association types in their L2 mental lexicon. Specifically, vocabulary size of the learners was examined to see if it had any significant relationship with word association types. To this end, experiment procedures that included vocabulary size test and the lexical decision task as well as the word association task were conducted on 40 Korean EFL learners. Reaction time and accuracy of responding to word associations in the lexical decision task were measured. Subsequently, a correlation analysis was conducted with their vocabulary size. Additionally, learners’ word association types were analyzed based on the results of word association task. The results showed that Korean EFL learners’ vocabulary size had significant correlations with their accuracy in identifying syntagmatic and paradigmatic associations, but not in the phonological association. However, their accuracy was not correlated with reaction times. The results indicate that L2 learners’ mental lexicon is partially dependent on their vocabulary size of the target language, and it is variable depending on word association types.

        This study examines the claim that vocabulary learning and retention are dependent on a task's involvement load (i.e., need, search, evaluation), as proposed by Hulstijn and Laufer (2001a). The study aims at comparing the effects of task types and task involvement load on vocabulary retention for Korean EFL university students. More specifically, this study was designed to test whether differential levels of task involvement loads lead to equally effective results to vocabulary retention when the total involvement index being equal. Three types of productive word-focused tasks (gap-filling using a dictionary, writing original sentences, and gap-filling through word transformation) were used to examine the interplay of involvement index and task types. The result indicated that there were significant main effects of task types, test types, and proficiency levels. The results also indicated that there were significant interaction effects of task types on the retention tests, proficiency levels on the retention tests, and task types×proficiency levels on the retentions. The pedagogical implications and further research directions are discussed.

        The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of bottom-up (BU) and top-down (TD) approaches on EFL learners’ vocabulary learning, the difference in the effects of the two approaches depending upon their level of vocabulary proficiency, and their perception of the approaches. For this study, 122 college students were divided into two approach groups and to two levels in each group depending upon their level of vocabulary knowledge. They were trained with either of the approaches for one semester. The results were that 1) there was no statistically significant differences between the BU and TD approaches, even though the two approaches were effective to improve the students’ vocabulary knowledge; 2) high-level students failed to show any significant differences between the two approaches in the two tests, whereas low-level students in the BU group performed significantly better than those in the TD group in the production test; and 3) they preferred the BU or TD approach to the traditional method in vocabulary learning, and they listed some advantages and disadvantages of the approaches.

        Despite the recognized importance of morphological knowledge to literacy outcomes such as vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, two of its subconstructs— morphological awareness and morphological processing—have received comparatively little attention. In response, the aim of the study reported here was to examine how the relationships between morphological awareness and morphological processing, especially in terms of morphological transparency and morphological frequency, contribute to the vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension of 62 native Korean-speaking secondary school students—27 eighth-graders and 35 tenth-graders— learning English as a foreign language. The students’ performance on the Test of Morphological Structure and the Word Reading Test was assessed to gauge their compounding awareness, inflectional awareness, vocabulary knowledge, and reading comprehension. The results indicated that the students’ performance was varied depending on morphological transparency and frequency. In addition, it was not morphological processing, but rather morphological awareness that explained variances in vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, when compounding awareness and inflectional awareness were controlled for. This paper discusses what such findings imply for teaching English as a foreign language to Korean learners.

        Few dictionary studies have examined the effectiveness of freely available online dictionaries (FAOD) offered by search engine companies. This experimental study examines the effectiveness of one FAOD, Naver.com, as an aid to vocabulary acquisition for a group of 87 intermediate-level Korean university students aged 19 to 28 (mean 21.9). The VKS and two multiple choice tests administered after a written recall task, and again one month later, measured vocabulary acquisition. MANOVA using treatment type (Online, Gloss, or Control) as the independent variable and test results as the dependent variables compared vocabulary acquisition. A second line of inquiry examined effects of topical familiarity on vocabulary acquisition. Findings suggest that FAODs are equally effective as a written gloss, and that both significantly outperform using context clues. Evidence is presented that unfamiliar topics may lead to slightly better vocabulary gains over reading familiar topics. Ways these findings can assist learners and teachers are discussed.

        Noises in each construction field cause residents in the neighborhood to make complaints due to their high sound pressure level and repetitive, shocking sound. While South Korea regulates construction noises on the basis of legal criteria to minimize the damage from the noises, the regulation only involves a weighted sound level (dB(A)), which is loudness, like other types of noises. It is therefore necessary to make typology of construction noise sources and evaluation vocabularies with the objective of making criteria for regulating construction noises suitable for the South Korean situation. While research based on a survey has been conducted to make typology of construction noise sources and evaluation vocabularies, there have been lots of difficulties in using it to make criteria for regulation because no consideration was given to psychological responses of people. On the basis of the findings from literature review, this study aimed to make typology of construction noise sources and vocabularies through a psycho-acoustic experiment and analyze the psychological characteristics and meanings of construction noises more accurately. The respondents’ psychological responses to construction noise sources were grouped into three factors ‘normal, shocking, and fluctuating noises’ and into ― ― six factors ‘annoying,’ ‘loud,’ ‘confusing,’ ‘noisy,’ ‘alarming,’ and ‘boisterous’ in terms of evaluation ― ― vocabularies. Since the factor with the biggest eigenvalue drawn from the respondents’ psychological responses is most important, the most important influential factor in evaluating construction noises was ‘normal noises’ for construction noise sources and ‘annoyance’ for evaluation vocabularies. This typology is expected to be useful to make and revise criteria for regulating construction noises.

        The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the “aspect of vocabulary”, which is used in current grammar education, considering the overlaps between vocabulary categories. For this purpose, the existing discussion on the aspect of vocabulary and the way of implementing the curriculum and the textbooks were examined. As a result, it is confirmed that the vocabulary aspect education has not fully taken into consideration of “overlapping among the vocabulary categories”. In this study, we set up a category of vocabulary with multiple features and categorized these features using “+” and “-” depending on the case. In this way, aspect of vocabulary is restructured more coherently. More discussion on the future studies and education should be continued.

        This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the sentence-writing task on English vocabulary learning of Korean high school students. The effectiveness of the sentence-writing task can be explained based on the Involvement Load Hypothesis (Laufer & Hulstijn, 2001); yet, there has been no consistency in the results of the previous studies on this hypothesis. In the present study, the effects of the sentence-writing task on vocabulary learning were re-examined in comparison with the gap-filling task. In addition, considering that there have been no studies addressing the effects of autobiographical elaboration (relating the meaning of a certain word to one’s own experience) on memory, the effects of the autobiographical sentence-writing task were compared to those of the imaginary sentence-writing task. Forty high proficiency and 40 low proficiency learners were randomly assigned either of the sentence-writing or the gap-filling task. The results demonstrated that the sentence-writing task is more effective in vocabulary learning than the gap-filling task, regardless of the learners’ proficiency levels. However, no significant difference was found between the effects of the autobiographical sentence-writing task and the imaginary sentence-writing task. Based on the results, the pedagogical implications were discussed in the conclusion chapter.

        모바일 SNS(Social Network Service) 메신저를 매개로 하며 네크워트를 통한 의사전달과 정보교환이 커뮤니케이션 영역의 중심이 되고 있다. 모바일 SNS 메신저는 신체언어인 얼굴표정 및 몸짓의 표현이 배제된 상태로 의사소통이 이루어지기 때문에 상대방의 미세한 감성을 정확히 인지하는데 한계가 있다. 이를 극복하기 위한 방법 중 하나가 이모티콘을 사용한 감성 커뮤니케이션이다. 사용자들의 이모티콘 사용이 증가함과 동시에 카카오톡, 라인 등의 회사뿐만 아니라, 개인 작가들을 통한 이모티콘 개발 또한 급격히 늘어나고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 적절한 디자인 가이드라인 없이 제작된 이모티콘은 여전히 사용자마다 다른 의미로 해석되어 커뮤니케이션의 오류가 발생되거나 감성 표현에 적절한 이모티콘을 찾는 것이 어렵다. 따라서, 본 연구는 모바일 SNS 환경에서의 커뮤니케이션에서 사용자들의 원활한 감성과 관련된 의사소통을 위하여 이모티콘을 체계적으로 연구하여 디자인 가이드라인을 구축하고 이를 실제로 적용한 이모티콘을 개발하고자 한다. 또한, 개발한 이모티콘에 대한 감성 커뮤니케이션의 효과를 검증하였다. 본 연구의 결과에서 정립한 이모티콘 가이드라인과 이를 적용한 감성 이모티콘은 앞으로 지속적으로 향상될 이모티콘 디자인에 있어서 감성 표현의 효과를 높이기 위한 긍정적인 방법으로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

        This study is to investigate the correlation between language aptitude and vocabulary levels of 5th graders of a Korean elementary school. The participants of the study were 39 elementary school students in Daejeon Metropolitan City. Language aptitude was elicited using LLAMA B, D, E and F classified respectively into memory retention, sound recognition, sound-symbol correspondence, and inference and application. A vocabulary size test modified from the vocabulary size test (Nation, 1990) was injected to the students to investigate their vocabulary levels. A correlation between each LLAMA score and vocabulary size of students was tabulated for their correlationship along with their statistical significance of 95% probability rate. The findings are: Positive correlations were found between each language aptitude ability and vocabulary ability. Among them, the correlation between memory retention and vocabulary ability is only statistically significant. This finding implicates that memory retention is an important factor to learn and retain new words, and learning vocabulary with pictures is recommended to reinforce the connection between meanings and forms of new words.

        최근 증가되고 있는 모바일 SNS(Social Network Service)를 통한 매개(Mediated) 커뮤니케이션에서 자신의 감성을 표현 가능한 이모티콘을 활용하여 대화하는 감성 커뮤니케이션이 발달하고 있다. 이모티콘 개발이 증가 하고 사용이 대중화가 됨에 따라, 사용자가 원하는 감성 표현이나 의미를 상징하는 아이템에 대한 요구가 확대 되고 있다. 또한, 동일한 이모티콘이라도 사용자에 따라 다르게 해석할 수 있으며, 디자이너의 의도한 감성 표현에 대해 사용자의 의미 해석이 상이할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 모바일 SNS 메신저에서 이모티콘을 이용한 커뮤니케이션을 위해 사용되는 감성 어휘를 연구하고 분류하여 감성 커뮤니케이션과 관련된 이모티콘 개발의 초석을 마련하고자 한다. 즉, 사용자 관점에서 이모티콘에 기반하여 표현하고자 하는 감성 어휘에 대한 분류와 모델을 제안한다. 본 연구를 위해 첫째, 문헌조사를 기반으로 감성 형용사를 수집하고 설문, 통계 분석 및 FGI (Focus Group Interview)를 통해 1차 감성 어휘를 추출한다. 둘째, 2차 설문조사 및 통계분석을 통해 최종 적합 어휘를 추출한다. 셋째, 최종 추출된 어휘를 바탕으로 다차원척도 분석을 실행하여 어휘 모델을 도출하고 감성 어휘를 분류한다. 그 결과 ‘미안하다’, ‘바쁘다’, ‘배고프다’, ‘어렵다’, ‘슬프다’, ‘날씨가 춥거나 덥다’, ‘지 루하다’, ‘부끄럽다’, ‘궁금하다’, ‘만족하다’, ‘좋다’, ‘아름답다’, ‘편안하다’ 의 13개 어휘로 분류되었다.

        This study investigated Korean college students’ performance as measured by two different vocabulary assessment tools (the Productive Vocabulary Levels Test (PVLT) and the Productive Vocabulary Use Task (PVUT)) and the relationship these assessments have with students’ writing proficiency. A total of 72 students participated in the study. The students were asked to take the PVLT and the PVUT and write an essay. They were also asked to write a reflection paper to assist in examining what kinds of processes they go through in vocabulary production for both tests. The results of the study indicated that the students’ ability to produce vocabulary and the number of lexical errors displayed in the results of the two different assessment tools were highly contingent on the test format. The students produced more target words in the PVLT since they were helped by clues of a few given initial letters of the target items. On the other hand, the students produced more alternatives than target words when allowed to choose words freely in the PVUT. As for the relationship between the students’ performance on the assessment tests and their writing proficiency, the results of the study showed that the students with a higher proficiency produced a higher number of correct target items and left fewer words unanswered in both tests. This study explores the possibility of using an alternative assessment tool and suggests that careful interpretation of the results of the different tests should be associated with assessment purposes.

        This study examined the relationship between reading and vocabulary within general and academic context. Forty-seven Korean EFL university students who participated in this research were given a reading comprehension test of general and academic topics. Also, vocabulary tests were conducted to measure the students’ size of vocabulary and their knowledge of general and academic words. The results revealed different findings for each type of vocabulary and reading. First, learners’ size of vocabulary significantly predicted reading comprehension, but the predictive power of academic vocabulary was stronger than vocabulary size. Second, general reading comprehension showed a similar result with the overall reading comprehension score in that academic vocabulary made a stronger contribution than vocabulary size. Finally, a different result was found for academic reading comprehension, and students’ size of vocabulary rather than academic vocabulary was the only significant predictor. The results indicate the different characteristics of general and academic reading, which implicates that each type of reading should be taught in a different manner.

        The current study investigated the usage of the bilingual Vocabulary Size Test (VST) within Korean EFL environment. Thirty-two university students with an intermediate to high proficiency participated in this study. The students were given a Korean bilingual version of VST and reported their official English scores. The findings of this study are as following: (1) The VST scores showed a significant relationship with students’ proficiency scores which indicates that students with a bigger size of vocabulary had a higher proficiency of English. (2) When VST scores were divided into each frequency level, no particular frequency band demonstrated a significant relationship with English proficiency. Also, the difficulty of each level did not show a consistent pattern. Based on the results of VST, the influence of Korean EFL environment such as loanwords and the test-oriented education system was discovered. This study provides implications for teaching vocabulary in EFL environment and suggests the need for developing of a vocabulary size test for Korean context.
