        Despite the importance of behavioral ecotoxicological tests, few researches have been conducted to assess the quality of freshwater using behavior of test species, in part due to lack of standardized test method for quantifying the response. In this study, we developed a new test methods using non-biting midge larva’s burrowing behavior to assess field water quality and a new index, AUC (area under curve), to compare burrowing behavior quantitatively. Four kinds of field samples (residential, natural, agricultural and industrial areas) were tested using the method to validate our methodology and index. There were not significant differences in 96 h mortality and heavy metal concentration between samples, but AUC from the industry sample was significantly decreased.

        Physicochemical properties of water quality were analyzed to understand the long-term variations in Lake Youngrang from 1998 to 2015. Nonparametric statistical methods were applied to deduct correlation among water quality parameters and water quality trend. In total observations (N=64), the Secchi depth (SD) transparency showed significant positive correlation with salinity (r=0.458) and highly significant negative correlation with chlorophyll-a (r= - 0.649) for p<0.0001 in two-tailed test of Spearman’s rank correlation. Significant negative correlations of SD were observed with chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN). These correlation patterns were very similar in rainy (N=25) and non-rainy (N= 39) periods too. Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) had significant correlation with COD. Sen’s slope test was performed along with Mann-Kendall trend test (significance α=0.05, two-tailed) to find water quality trend. Positive trends were observed for SD and salinity with Sen’s slopes 0.012 and 0.385, respectively (p<0.0001). Negative significant trends were observed for total nitrogen (TN) and Chl-a with Sen’s slopes - 0.02 (p<0.0001) and - 0.346 (p=0.0010), respectively. Temperature, COD and phosphorus components had no trends. Carlson’s trophic state index (TSI) for SD, TP and Chl-a were obtained in the ranges of 46~80, 37~82 and 39~82, respectively. Trophic index values suggest that Lake Youngrang was mesoeutrophic to eutrophic and there could be possibility of anoxia during the summer and dominance of blue-green algae. Excess nutrient inputs from external and internal sources were the causes of eutrophication in this lake. The findings of this study would be helpful to recognize water quality variables to manage the water body.

        In this study, we analyzed the relationship between phytoplankton community and physicochemical factors in 12 lakes located in Jeollanam-do based on the data surveyed from March to November 2014. Totally, 297 species of phytoplankton were identified including 98 Bacillariophyceae, 148 Chlorophyceae, 23 Cyanophyceae and 28 other phytoplankton taxa. The standing crops ranged from 124 to 59,148 cells mL-1 and showed the highest in August with the increase of Cyanophycean cells. The self-organizing map (SOM) was optimized into 9×6 grid and was classified into 5 clusters based on the similarity of environmental factors and phytoplankton indices. The SOM results showed that phytoplankton communities had positive relationship with water temperature, SS, DO, BOD, TP and Chl-a, whereas low relationship with pH, TN, NH3-N, NO3-N, PO4-P and Conductivity. In Pearson’s correlation coefficient, relationship between environmental factors and phytoplankton communities showed similar results with SOM.

        Understanding effects of thermal pollution and acidification has long been a concern of aquatic ecologists, but it remains largely unknown in Korea. This study was performed to elucidate the effects of thermal wastewater effluent (TWE) and acid rain on water quality and attached algae in a small mountain stream, the Buso Stream, a tributary located in the Hantan River basin. A total of five study sites were selected in the upstream area including the inflowing point of hot-spring wastewater (HSW), one upstream site (BSU), and three sites below thermal effluent merged into the stream (1 m, 10 m and 300 m for BSD1, BSD2, and BSD3, respectively). Field surveys and laboratory analyses were carried out every month from December 2015 to September 2016. Water temperature ranged 1.7~28.8°C with a mean of 15.0°C among all sites. Due to the effect of thermal effluent, water temperature at HSW site was sustained at high level during the study period from 17.5°C (January) to 28.8°C (September) with a mean of 24.2±3.7°C, which was significantly higher than other sites. Thermal wastewater effluent also brought in high concentration of nutrients (N, P). The effect of TWE was particularly apparent during dry season and low temperature period (December~March). Temperature effect of TWE did not last toward downstream, while nutrient effect seemed to maintain in longer distance. pH ranged 5.1~8.4 with a mean of 6.9 among all sites during the study period. The pH decrease was attributed to seasonal acid rain and snow fall, and their effects was identified by acidophilic diatoms dominated mainly by Eunotia pectinalis and Tabellaria flocculosa during March and August. These findings indicated that water quality and periphyton assemblages in the upstream region of Buso Stream were affected by thermal pollution, eutrophication, and acidification, and their confounding effects were seasonally variable.

        This study explored spatiotemporal variability of water quality in correspondence with hydrometeorological factors in the four stations of Euiam Reservoir located in the upstream region of the North-Han River from May 2012 to December 2015. Seasonal effect was apparent in the variation of water temperature, DO, electric conductivity and TSS during the study period. Stratification in the water column was observed in the near dam site every year and vanished between August and October. Increase of nitrogen nutrients was observed when inflowing discharge was low, while phosphorus increase was distinct both during the early season with increase of inflowing discharge and the period of severe draught persistent. Duration persisting high concentration of Chl-a (>25 mg m-3: the eutrophic status criterion, OECD, 1982) was 1~2 months of the whole year in 2014~2015, while it was almost 4 months in 2013. Water quality of Euiam Reservoir appeared to be affected basically by geomorphology and source of pollutants, such as longitudinally linked instream islands and Aggregate Island, inflowing urban stream, and wastewater treatment plant discharge. While inflowing discharge from the dams upstream and outflow pattern causing water level change seem to largely govern the variability of water quality in this particular system. In the process of spatiotemporal water quality change, factors related to climate (e.g. flood, typhoon, abruptly high rainfall, scorching heat of summer), hydrology (amount of flow and water level) might be attributed to water pulse, dilution, backflow, uptake, and sedimentation. This study showed that change of water quality in Euiam Reservoir was very dynamic and suggested that its effect could be delivered to downstream (Cheongpyeong and Paldang Reservoirs) through year-round discharge for hydropower generation.

        In this study, we investigated the correlation between the number of cyanobacterial species and the water quality factors after installation of Nakdong river weirs. Factor analyses of water quality factors were also performed. The results of correlations showed that there was no significant water quality with the cyanobacterial concentration but the correlation coefficient of nutrients increased from the upstream to the downstream. There was a significant correlation between W·T and pH as important water quality factors for the growth of cyanobacteria. In the downstream region of Nakdong river, algae were more frequently detected than in the upstream region, and the blooms of algae species seem to be influenced by the higher pH and the influx of the phosphorus from the upstream tributaries. Nutrient concentration was higher in the downstream region than in the upstream region due to the effects of tributaries Geumho river and Nam river in Nakdong river. As a result of the factor analyses, nitrogen species were the principal factors in the upper region, and phorsphorus species were the principal factors in the downstream region.

        This study analyzed the correlation between Chl-a and water quality factors using characteristics of climate data, water quality factors, and various statistical analysis techniques during the summer season in the Nakdong River during the 2-year period. The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for establishing water quality management policy in the Changnyeong-Haman weir section. From the end of July to the middle of August when algae mainly occur, both the years 2015 and 2016 are in the temperature range of 25 ~ 30 °C, and the total precipitation of 2015 is less than that of 2016 in this period. As a result of comparing the concentration of Chl-a, the average Chl-a concentration of 2015 was higher than that of 2016, which seems to be related to the total precipitation in the occurrence of algae. The results of the correlation analysis showed that the correlation with PO4-P was significant at most points. As a result of the factor analysis, the first principal factor group classified PO4-P, NH3-N, TP, pH, flow rate, TN and this section seems to be influenced by phosphorus and nitrogen and flow rate.

        본 연구에서는 금강 대권역에 서식하는 멸종위기 담수어류의 분포, 이들 종에 대한 화학적 지표와의 관계 및 물리적 서식지 특성을 분석하였다. 금강 대권역에 서식하는 멸종위기종의 개체수는 감돌고기(Pseudopungtungia nigra), 꾸구 리(Gobiobotia macrocephala), 돌상어(Gobiobotia brevibarba), 퉁사리(Liobagrus obesus), 미호종개(Iksookimia choii) 순으로 나타났다. 멸종위기 야생생물 I급 어류인 감돌고기는 금강 대권역 내 18개 하천에서 가장 광범위하게 분포하여, 향후 감돌고기의 I급 어종 선정에 대한 재평가가 필요한 것으로 사료되었다. 또한 초강 중권역에서 멸종위기어종이 총 4종 384개체가 채집되어 종수 및 개체수가 풍부하였다. 멸종위기어종 서식지에서 이화학적 수질내성도 분석에 따르면, 생물학적 산소요구량(BOD) 및 총인(TP)은 각각 매우 좋음(Ⅰa), 좋음(Ⅰb)으로 평가 되었으며. 암모니아성 질소(NH4+), 총질소(TN), 인산염 인(PO4-P) 등의 수질 항목도 멸종위기종 비 출현지점에 비해 훨씬 양호한 것으로 분석되었다. 한편, 미호종개의 경우 수질의 내성범위가 다른 어종에 비해서 광범위하게 나타나, 화학적 수질특성이 크게 악화되지 않을 경우 수질특성 보다는 미소서식처의 하상구조, 수리수문학적 특성 등의 물리적 서식지 조건이 더 중요한 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 멸종위기종의 분포는 1∼3차의 소형하천보다 4∼6차 대형하천에서 높게 나타났으며, 주로하천의 상류 및 중상류에 작은 무리를 이루며 서식하는 것으로 나타났다. 멸종위기종 미출현지역과 출현지역의 생태건강도 다변수 평가모델 값은 각각 21.6 “보통상태(Fair)” 및 30.5 “양호상태(Good)”로 나타나 뚜렷한 차이를 보여, 생태건강도가 잘 유지된 곳에서 멸종위기종이 잘 서식하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구를 요약해 보면, 감돌고기와 같은 어종의 멸종위기종 선정에 대한 재평가가 향후 필요하며, 수질오염 및 서식지교란이 가속화되고 있어 멸종위기종 에 대한 체계적인 보호 및 관리가 필요하다.

        Recently, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) has been recognized as a core technology of smart water grid, and the relevant market is growing constantly. In this study, we developed all-in-one smart water meter of the AMI system, which was installed on the test-bed to verify both effectiveness and field applicability in office building water usage. Developed 15 mm-diameter smart water meter is a magneto-resistive digital meter, and measures flow rate and water quality parameters (temperature, conductivity) simultaneously. As a result of the water usage analysis by installing six smart water meters on various purposes in office building water usage, the water usage in shower room showed the highest values as the 1,870 L/day and 26.6 liter per capita day (LPCD). But, the water usage in laboratory was irregular, depending on the many variables. From the analysis of the water usage based on day of the week, the water usage on Monday showed the highest value, and tended to decrease toward the weekend. According to the PCA results and multivariate statistical approaches, the shower room (Group 3) and 2 floor man’s restroom sink (Group 1-3) have been classified as a separate group, and the others did not show a significant difference in both water use and water quality aspects. From the analysis of water usage measured in this study, the leak or water quality accident did not occur. Consequently, all-in-one smart water meter developed in this study can measure flow rate and water quality parameters (temperature, conductivity) simultaneously with effective field applicability in office building water usage.

        This study explored spatiotemporal variability of water quality in correspondence with hydrometeorological factors in the five stations of Paldang Reservoir located in the Han River during 4 years from May 2012 to December 2015. Variability of basic water quality factors were largely related with seasonal fluctuations of hydrology. Temperature stratification occurred in the deep dam station, and prolonged hypoxia was observed during the draught year. Nitrogen nutrients were increased with decreasing inflow in which changing pattern of NH4 reversed to NO3 by the effect of treated wastewater effluent. Phosphorus increase was manifest during the period of high inflow or severe drought. Chl-a variation was reversely related with both flow change and AGP (algal growth potential) variations. Our study demonstrated that water quality variability in Paldang Reservoir was largely attributed to both natural and operational changes of inflow and outflow (including water intake) based on major pollution source of the treated wastewater (total amount of 472×103 m3 d-1) entering to the water system from watershed. In the process of water quality variability, meteorological (e.g., flood, typhoon, abnormal rainfall, scorching heat of summer) and hydrological factors (inflow and discharge) were likely to work dynamically with nutrients pulse, dilution, absorption, concentration and sedimentation. We underline comprehensive limnological study related to hydro-meteorolology to understand short- and long-term water quality variability in river-type large reservoir and suggest the necessity of P-free wastewater treatment for the effective measure of reducing pollution level of Paldang drinking water resource.

        본 연구는 오존수 침수처리가 소와 돼지 부산물의 미생물학적 안전성 및 품질특성에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보고자 실시하였다. 미생물학적 안전성 및 품질평가를 위하여 총균 및 대장균수, 육색, 가열감량, 지방산패도를 측정하였으며, 처리구 설정은 처리하지 않은 대조구(Control)와 일반수돗물(10℃)로30분간 침수처리한 처리구 1(T1), 오존수(1.0ppm, 10℃)에 10분간 침수처리한 처리구 2(T2), 오존수에 20분간 침수처리한 처리구 3(T3) 및 오존수에 30분간 침수처리한 처리구 4(T4)로 분류하였다. 소 및 돼지의 간, 소창의 가열감량은 모든 처리구에서 유의적인 차이가 없었으며(p>0.05), 간보다는 소창에서 높은 가열감량을 보였다. 육색은 소의 간과 소창에서는 오존수 20 또는 30분 침수 처리시 황색도 값을 감소시키나, 명도 및 적색도 값에서 유의적인 차이가 나타나지 않았다(p>0.05). 지방산패도 측정 결과, 돼지 소창의 경우 일반수돗물 및 오존수 침지 처리시 대조구에 비해 낮은 지방산패도 값을 나타내었으며 오존수 침지 처리시 유의적으로 낮게 나타났다(p<0.05). 소 간의 경우 대조구에 비해 모든 처리구에서 유의적으로 높은 지방산패도 값을 보였으며 일반수돗물로 침지한 T1에 비해 오존수 침지시 낮은 지방산패도 값을 나타내었다. 총균 및 대장균수는 저장기간이 증가할수록 모든 처리구에서 유의적으로 증가하며(p<0.05), 대조구 및 T1에 비해 오존수 침지처리구에서 유의적으로 낮은 총균 및 대장균수를 나타내었다(p<0.05). 이상의 결과를 통해 오존수 침지처리는 축육부산물의 품질특성 저하 없이 미생물로부터 안전성 확보가 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

        본 연구는 우리나라 주요 국제항에 출입하는 중국기원 선박의 선박평형수내 환경 및 부유생물의 특성을 파악하여 선박평형수처리장치(BWTS)와 관련된 면제 협상을 위한 기초자료를 확보하고자 하였다. 조사된 37척의 선박 중 평형수의 보관 기간은 발해만을 포함하는 북부지역(지역 “A”)에서 평균 3.91 ± 4.61 days로 가장 짧았다. 총부유물질의 농도는 1.80 ~ 266 mg L-1의 범위를 보였고, 용존성 및 입자성 유기물질은 각각 1.09 ~ 5.79 mg L-1, 0.17 ~ 3.65 mg L-1의 범위를 나타내었다. 영양염 농도는 양자강 유역을 포함한 지역 “B”에서 높았고, 홍콩을 포함하는 지역 “C”에서 낮은 평균값을 보였다. 엽록소-a 평균 농도는 0.67 ± 1.15 μg L-1로 나타났고, 1 μg L-1 이상의 높은 값은 지리적으로 우리나라와 가까운 지역 “A”에서 7척 중 3척이 집중되었다. 식물플랑크톤의 개체수가 > 10,000 cells L-1의 선박평형수는 37척 중 6척으로 나타났고, 이 중 3척이 지역 “A” 기원으로 파악되었다. 특히, 홍콩항에서는 유해미세조류로 잘 알려진 와편모그룹의 종이 높은 밀도로 관찰되었다. 본 연구 결과, 중국과의 BWTS 면제권 협상은 신중하게 접근할 필요성이 있다고 판단된다.

        물은 신체의 대부분을 구성하고 있는 기본 물질로서 생명유지의 필수 요소이다. 특히 WHO에서는 인류 건강유지의 1등 공신으로 깨끗한 물공급을 꼽고 있다. 우리나라는 산업화, 도심화를 통해 신규오염물질 발생이 증가하고 있으며 특히 먹는물의 경우 중금속 및 소독부산물 중심의 관리에서 난연제, 코팅제, 의 약물질 등 신규오염물질 관리에 주력하고 있다. 우리나라 먹는물 수질기준은 1963년 최초 도입된 이래 1984년, 1986년 개정 강화되었으며, 1995년 먹는물 관리법이 제정되었고 1997년 감시항목이 설정되 어 기준과 감시의 2원화된 관리체계가 유지되고 있다. 먹는물 수질기준은 외국 사례 도입방식에서 체계적 장기 모니터링을 통한 위해도 평가를 수행하여 기준을 강화하고 있으며 현재 60개 항목으로 확대 강화되었다.

        This study attempts to draw factors for an analysis of the operation effect of a rechlorination facility and autodrain equipment for residual chlorine equalization by installing and operating a rechlorination facility and autodrain equipment in P City and analyzing the practical evaluation method and operation effect. For this purpose, this study selected three indicators for an analysis of the effectiveness of residual chlorine equalization and conducted a comparative analysis before and after the implementation of the residual chlorine equalization. As a result of estimation, ① the reduction of the residual chlorine concentration range from a water treatment plant to the pipe end was 16.0%; ② the total reduction of chlorination input was 18.0%; and ③ the reduction of the generation of disinfection by-products was 19.5%. In addition, this achieved enough residual chlorine equalization in the supply process and shows that it could successfully achieve the economic feasibility of investment in equipment and the reduction of the generation of disinfection by-products. Like this, it is judged that the three indicators suggested in this study will be used sufficiently as indicators of an analysis of the effectiveness of residual chlorine equalization according to the operations of the rechlorination facility and autodrain equipment.

        본 연구에서는 건천화된 농촌 소하천의 환경을 개선하기 위해 농업용 저수지의 방류 능력을 평가하고 하천환경용수 방류에 따른 하류하천의 수질변화를 모의하였다. 대상유역은 경상남도 고성군 하이면에 위치한 봉현저수지 및 봉현천을 선정하였으며, 2011년부터 2013년까지 현장조사를 실시하였다. 유량측 정이 용이한 총 5개 지점을 선정하여 수질과 유량자료를 수집하였고, 기상자료는 지리적으로 인접한 진 주 기상관측소의 2000년부터 2013년까지 일 자료를 수집하였다. 저수지 방류조건 전후의 하천수질 (BOD, SS, TN, TP)을 비교, 분석하기 위한 수질모형으로 QUAL2K 모델을 선정하였다. 대상유역에 대 한 기상자료, 하천자료, 수질자료 등의 입력자료를 구축한 후 QUAL2K 모형을 적용하여 실측값과 비교 한 결과, BOD, SS, TN, 그리고 TP 항목에 대한 모형의 평가지표는 다음과 같이 나타났다. R2는 0.8508~0.9913, RMSE 0.005~0.52mg/L, NSE 0.949~0.998로 나타나 비교적 높은 일치도를 나타냈 다. 저수지 물수지 모형을 이용하여 다양한 저수지 방류 시나리오에 대해 분석한 결과, 적정 방류량은 3,000ton/day로 나타났다. 방류 전후의 수질을 비교한 결과 BOD와 SS의 경우 각각 9.2%, 21.0% 증가 하여 오히려 수질이 오염되는 것으로 나타났으며, TN과 TP는 각각 -9.0%, -2.4% 감소하여 수질이 개 선되는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 하천환경용수를 공급을 통해 건천화를 완화하더라도 저수지 수질에 따라 하류하천의 수질이 오염될 수도 있음을 나타내었다.

        In this study, a two-factor-six-level factorial design was adopted for optimizing brine (saturated salt solution) and water flow rates in electrolyzed water generator in order to produce electrolyzed water (EW) having best performance for vegetable washing. The pH, electro-conductivity, chlorine contents of produced EW were determined. The optimum EW for broccoli sprouts washing was produced at flow rates of brine and water of 100 mL/min and 300 mL/min respectively. The optimum washing time was 20 s based on the quality of washed broccoli sprouts. The microbial counts were decreased by 1.4 log for aerobic bacteria and 1.0 log for yeasts and mold. The functional quality and sensory characteristics of broccoli sprouts were unaffected by the EW washing. The results demonstrated the applicability of EW for the improvement of hygiene of broccoli sprouts without affecting quality.

        An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of cooling water treatment with ionized calcium on calcium content, extending the shelf-life and quality of fresh chicken meat in poultry slaughtering process. The subjects were divided into four groups: control (0% without ionized calcium) and treatment groups (0.5, 0.7, 0.9% ionized calcium). The results indicated that the cooling water treatment with ionized calcium exhibited the bacterial counts of 105 CFU/cm2 in surface of chicken meat, and maintained the quality of fresh chicken meat with extending the shelf-life above seven days when compared with that of control group. The results found that the cooling water treatment with ionized calcium could produce the calcium enrichment of chicken meat as nine times higher in calcium content of chicken meat when compared with that of control group. pH, water holding capacity, TBARS (MDA mg/kg) in chicken meat via the cooling water treatment with ionized calcium showed 6.4, above 50, below 0.10, respectively, with preventing the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. Lightness (L*) as a chicken meat color, shear force indicated above 60, below 1.70 kg/0.5 inch2, respectively.

        퇴적물 준설은 수서생태계에서 오염물질을 영구적으로 제거하는 것으로 수서생태계 복원에 있어서 효율적인 방법으로 여겨진다. 본 연구에서는 수괴의 산소 요구율의 계산을 통해 마산만의 퇴적물 준설이 수질에 미치는 영향을 정량화하였다. 이를 위해 수질 및 저질 모델이 포함된 생태계 모델을 마산만에 적용시켰다. 모델 계산 결과, 육상 오염원이 감소할수록 수괴의 산소 요구율이 다소 증가한 반면에 만내측과 만외측의 준설에 의해서는 산소 요구율이 크게 증가하였다. 이러한 결과는 퇴적물 준설이 마산만 수질을 더욱 개선시킬 수 있음을 의미한다. 산소 요구율과 퇴적물 산소 요구량의 상관관계식을 통해 육상 부하량 10 % 감소에 의한 수질 개선효과에 상당하는 퇴적물 준설 면적이 만내측에서는 1.68㎢이며, 만외측에서는 3.15㎢임을 계산하였다. 이는 마산만 수질 개선을 위해서는 만내측의 퇴적물 준설이 효율적 방법임을 의미한다.
