The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column systems with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction. The proposed reinforcement details have economic feasibility and rationality and make construction periods shorter. A model of hollow reinforced concrete bridge columns was tested under a constant axial load and a quasi-static cyclically reversed horizontal load. As a result, proposed reinforcement details for material quantity reduction were equal to existing reinforcement details in terms of required performance. The companion paper presents the experimental and analytical study for the performance assessment of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column systems with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column systems with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction and to provide the details and reference data. Five hollow reinforced concrete bridge columns were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced by using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. The adopted numerical method gives a realistic prediction of seismic performance throughout the loading cycles for several the investigated test specimens. This study documents the testing of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column systems with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction and presents conclusions based on the experimental and analytical findings.

The seismic evaluation of electric power facilities in the switchyard of nuclear power plants is currently insufficient. In order to evaluate the seismic performance of lightning arrester subjected to four types of earthquake (near- and far-fault earthquakes, NEHRP Site Class A&B and D earthquakes), seismic fragility analysis using maximum likelihood estimation is performed considering various damage states. The comparison of the seismic fragility curves for three main parts of lightning arrester that are the busing, anchor and steel frame, reveals that the failure of lightning arrester is governed by the bushing damage mode such as porcelain cracking.

In industrial facilities sites, the conventional method determining the earthquake magnitude (M) using earthquake ground-motion records is generally not applicable due to the poor quality of data. Therefore, a new methodology is proposed for determining the earthquake magnitude in real-time based on the amplitude measures of the ground-motion acceleration mostly from S-wave packets with the higher signal-to-ratios, given the Vs30 of the site. The amplitude measures include the bracketed cumulative parameters and peak ground acceleration (As). The cumulative parameter is either CAV (Cumulative Absolute Velocity) with 100 SPS (sampling per second) or BSPGA (Bracketed Summation of the PGAs) with 1 SPS. The arithmetic equations to determine the earthquake magnitude are derived from the CAV(BSPGA)-As-M relations. For the application to broad ranges of earthquake magnitude and distance, the multiple relations of CAV(BSPGA)-As-M are derived based on worldwide earthquake records and successfully used to determine the earthquake magnitude with a standard deviation of ±0.6M.

In current seismic design code, steel moment frames are classified into ordinary, intermediate, and special moment frames. In the case of special moment frames which have large R-factor, economic design is possible by reducing the design lateral force. However, there is difficulty for practical application due to constraints such as strong column-weak beam requirement. This study evaluated if steel intermediate moment frame could maintain enough seismic capacity when the R-factor is increased from 4.5 to 6. As for the analytical models, steel moment frames of 3 and 5 stories were categorized into four performance groups according to seismic design category. Seismic performances of the frames were evaluated through the procedure based on FEMA P695. FEMA P695 utilizes nonlinear static analysis(pushover analysis) and nonlinear dynamic analysis(incremental dynamic analysis, IDA). In order to reflect the characteristics of Korean steel moment frames on the analytical model, the beam-column connection was modeled as weak panel zone where the collapse of panel zone was indirectly considered by checking its ultimate rotational angle after an analysis is done. The analysis result showed that the performance criteria required by FEMA P695 was satisfied when R-factor increased in all the soil conditions except SE.

This paper investigates experimentally the confinement effect on concrete. For this purpose, outside lateral reinforcement members made of stainless steel and GFRP were employed. Then, uniaxial compressive tests on concrete cylinders incorporating the members were conducted. A total of 30 cylinder specimens, specifically, 6 unconfined specimens, 12 specimens confined by stainless steel and 12 specimens confined by GFRP, were fabricated. The failure patterns of both unconfined and confined specimens were assessed and discussed based on experimental results. The results proved that the maximum stress and corresponding strains of the cylinders confined using the proposed hoops are increased in comparison with those of the unconfined. This supports that the current work can be used for retrofitting concrete members and structures and thus may lead to increased stability of such structures.

RC shear wall sections which have irregular shapes such as T, ㄱ, ㄷ sections are typically used in low-rise buildings in Korea. Pushover analysis of building containing such members costs a lot of computation time and needs professional knowledge since it requires complicated modeling and, sometimes, fails to converge. In this study, a method using an equivalent column element for the shear wall is proposed. The equivalent column element consists of an elastic column, an inelastic rotational spring, and rigid beams. The inelastic properties of the rotational spring represent the nonlinear behavior of the shearwall and are obtained from the section analysis results and moment distribution for the member. The use of an axial force to compensate the difference in the axial deformation between the equivalent column element and the actual shear wall is also proposed. The proposed method is applied for the pushover analysis of a 5- story shear wall-frame building and the results are compared with ones using the fiber elements. The comparison shows that the inelastic behavior at the same drift was comparable. However, the performance points estimated using the pushover curves showed some deviations, which seem to be caused by the differences of estimated yield point and damping ratios.

This study presents an experimental study of the structural behavior for steel plate-concrete column-to-steel girder connections. Experiments were carried out to investigate the moment-rotation characteristics, failure behavior and ultimate moment capacity of these connections. The results of this experimental study involving three welded moment-resisting connections subjected to cyclic loading are presented. The specimens were fabricated at full scale to evaluate their hysteretic behavior. A description of the test specimens, the details of the joint, the test system and the testing methods are described. The test results showed that the structural behavior of these composite connections was influenced by the connection details.
