Global climate change has become a major issue which affects the humanity and nature around the world. Caused primarily by human actions of unabated greenhouse gas emission and deforestation, the destructive effects of climate change have become more frequent and intense during the past decades. As climate change is a global problem, addressing its causes and consequences also requires global responses. While climate change is caused by people from various parts of the world, its impacts disproportionately affect people in coastal regions and islands around the world, and marginalized poor communities in developing countries. Everyone in the planet has a role in addressing climate change, but governments, non governmental organizations (NGOs,), and corporations have broader roles and responsibilities. Due to their mission alignments to protect the environment and conserve nature, environmental NGOs play several vital roles in the fightagainst climate change. Environmental NGOs and international NGOs are in a unique position to respond, and to facilitate the involvement of other sectors in mitigation and adaptation strategies for climate change. This article discusses some of the roles and responsibilities of NGOs in addressing climate change.

In Jeju Island, Korea, a demonstration complex for smart grid technology was established to demonstrate the efficiency and feasibility of five fields, such as ‘smart place’, ‘smart transportation’, ‘smart renewable’, ‘smart power grid’, and ‘smart electricity service’. The demonstration of the efficiency and feasibility of this technology ended in May 2013 and now the second stage projects are proceeding to expand the scope of the above fields. Also, Dae Kyung Engineering Co., Ltd., one of the professional engineering businesses in Jeju Island, is steadily expanding its green industry domain in the ‘smart renewable’ and ‘smart transportation’ fields by establishing consortiums with major companies. I would like to introduce how a small and local company’s passion for a ‘green’ technology led to establishing ‘green’ communities and inducing changes in the world through developing ‘green’ technologies. A case of ‘Gapado (Gapa Island)’ which is a small island belonging to Jeju Island is quite relevant example of this kind of change and experience. Gapado has become a green island and dreamt about making the world greener through the networks with other islands and local governments around the world. In the future, the International Green Island Forum Corporation will hold forums on environment and green technologies regularly and build networks with local governments at home and abroad and businesses which aim at supporting ‘green and carbon-free islands’. Through this, the forum will contribute to conserving islands’ unique ecology and culture and pursue development in island areas using new and renewable energy and realizing where no carbon is emitted. We are looking forward to seeing people all around the world who dream green islands, and eco cities join forces with us.

Hanon Crater is the largest crater with a diameter of more than 1km and the only maar type crater in the Korean Peninsula. It is like a ‘time capsule of the Earth’s environment’, preserving the invaluable scientific information that reveals the process of the Earth’s climatic and ecological environmental changes over the past 5 million years. However, the value of the crater has been unattended and the crater itself has been damaged and neglected. About 550 years ago, as people tore down the wall of the crater to use the crater as farmland, the crater lake disappeared. In recent years, damage has been done to the crater under the threat of development without thought for the environment. This study verifies the climate and environmental value of Hanon Crater and the value of the maar lake sedimentary layers of the crater as a key national asset and the necessity of its reatoration as presented in the recommendations of the 2012 WCC and provides supportable reasons for making the restoration project as a national one in conjunction with IUCN and the international community. In particular, this study, in which the Commission on Ecosystem Management of IUCN also participated, suggests the objectives, strategies and alternatives in restoring the crater wall, lake, and vegetation based on Ecological Restoration for Protected Areas: Principles, Guidelines and Best Practices (Keenleyside et al., 2012) and ways to utilize the cater as a national resource after the restoration such as establishing a center for studying ancient organisms and climate and setting up a maar museum.”

This study aims to investigate a method with which one could enhance duty-free stores in island region through intensifying customers’ revisit and recommendation intention. We proposed a research model that perceived service quality of customers infuences revisit and recommendation mediated by customers’ satisfaction. According to the survey conducted to 181 customers of harbor duty-free store, route to the shop, time available for shopping, and convenience facility were variables significant to increase the quality of service and in turn, customer satisfaction. Moreover, high customer satisfaction appeared to enhance revisit and recommendation intentions of customers. Through such results, this research indicates theoretical implication that there should be a discussion concerning service quality unique to the duty-free shop, and managerial contributions that investment on layout design of stores is significant in operations of harbor duty-free stores
