Programmed cell death (PCD) is decisive in eliminating affected cells in human cancers, whereas there are increasing cases of cancer-related death due to side effects of modern treatment methods. There is an urge for new methods of growth inhibition and elimination of cancer cells with a lower cytotoxicity to normal cells. Irregularity along PCD pathways plays a crucial role in cancer cell carcinogenesis. Apoptosis is a distinct cell death mechanism occurring in multicellular organisms and also called type one programmed cell death. Autophagy and paraptosis are non-apoptotic PCD occurring in multicellular organisms. Natural compounds are the fundament of pharmacological treatments, and flavonoids are natural polyphenolic compounds which are unique due to their diverse chemical structures and various biological active mechanisms like anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative and much more. This gives an increasing number of studies indicating that some flavonoids from medicinal plants could be promising candidates for new natural anticancer drugs, which attract high interests of academic researchers and advanced users. An understanding of the underlying mechanism of PCD induced by flavonoids in cancer cells is important as it plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. This systematic review is to report flavonoids and their derivatives as new anticancer candidates to stimulate PCD with a different mechanism based on the pharmacological evidence.

Many kinds of medicinal herbs have been used to treat inflammation in Oriental medicine. However, there few studies have investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of medicinal herbs. In this study, we used mouse bone marrow cells (BMs) treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a simulator of osteomyelitis, to screen medicinal herbs having anti-inflammatory activity. Specifically, we investigated the activity of an extract of Rhus chinensis (RC) using metabolic activity and cytokine production of the BMs treated with LPS and RC. The metabolic activity of BMs was measured using Cell Counting Kit-8® solution. RC decreased the metabolic activity of LPS-treated BMs. A viability assay using trypan blue solution demonstrated that RC marginally decreased the viability of LPS-treated BMs. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that RC decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential of BMs, regardless of LPS treatment. To investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of RC, we measured the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interleukin (IL)-10 in BMs. LPS increased the production of both cytokines in BMs. Interestingly, RC induced a greater increase in IL-10 than TNF-alpha in LPS-treated BMs. Taken together, RC decreased metabolic activity and modulated the production of inflammation-related cytokines in LPS-treated BMs. These findings suggest that RC can be used as a medicinal herb with anti-inflammatory activity.

We investigate the change of leaf chlorophyll content according to iron content in brown rice when cultivated on the iron limited solid MS medium. By cultivating wild-type and transgenic brown rice in a solid MS medium, we confirmed that iron deficiency chlorosis did not occur in MS media which were contained over 20% of iron content compared to normal MS condition. After selecting twenty kinds of Korean rice varieties, those brown rice were cultivated in solid MS media which were contained from 0 to 15% of iron content compared to normal MS condition then the leaf chlorophyll content was measured. The leaf chlorophyll content was changed according to iron content in brown rice when cultivated in solid MS medium which was contained 0 and 5% of iron content,. There was a strong correlation between iron content in brown rice and leaf chlorophyll content cultivated in solid MS medium with 5% of Fe content. Therefore we expect that analysis of leaf chlorophyll content after cultivated on MS medium with 5% iron content compared to normal MS media condition will be more simple and effective method to screening high iron content brown rice without measurement of iron content.

The CRISPR/Cas9 system is proved to be a powerful tool for knock-out and knock-in in various species. By introducing genetic materials of two components (Cas9 and small guide (sg) RNA) into cells or pronuclear of the fertilized embryo, gene editing occurs. Some studies reported that efficiency of gene editing would be increased as Cas9 was integrated into cells or animals since Cas9 is indispensable in the CRISPR/Cas9 system. Accordingly, the production of Cas9 expressing cattle may provide the broadly used gene editing platform in cattle. For this study, Cas9 and RFP genes were cloned into PiggyBac (PB) transposon system. PB-Cas9-RFP and transposase were microinjected into 1436 in vitro fertilized embryos and 241 blastocysts were formed. Blastocysts with RFP expression accounting for 14.1% of total formed blastocysts were selected and transferred into 5 recipient cow. After gestation periods, four transgenic cattle were delivered without any veterinary assistance. From a transgenic cattle, ear skin tissue was collected for primary culture. On those primary cells, sgRNAs in DNA form for various genes such as PRNP, RB1 and BLG were transfected as 2ug of sgRNA per 5x105 cells using Nucleo factor system (Neon®, invitrogen, program#16). As expected, every group of each sgRNA delivered was confirmed to be mutated by T7E1assay. Those data demonstrated that for the first time, transgenic cattle with Cas9 expression were born, grown up to date and will be avaluable resource for genome-editing in cattle. This work was supported by BK21PLUS Program for Creative Veterinary Science and Seoul Milk Coop (SNU550-20160004).

Composite resins are developed as restorative materials to improve esthetics and mechanical properties. To improve the physical properties of resin material, resin filler have to be added. However, no imaging method is adopted for resin filler distribution. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a optical imaging technique to delineate microscopic structures within biological tissue. The OCT application to dental composites resin and its filler is not described yet. So, this new and advanced optical method is needed for clinical application for evaluation of dental composite resin. To analyze the spatial distribution of dental composite resin and to evaluate the resin restoration in cavity, frequency domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) was used for their analysis. Resin restored tooth was prepared. For morphological observation, serially sectioned teeth, conventional X-ray taking and micro computed-tomography (CT) images were compared with OCT images. The experiment has done to evaluate the success of the resin restoration using 3 dimensional structure OCT image. In this research, OCT is evaluated as a new technique to image resin restoration. The evaluation of resin restored tooth was performed by OCT. Inappropriate restoration such as marginal adaptation, large porosities, internal integrity and poor contour could be detected. Resin filler also could be checked by OCT. The distribution, number, regularity and size of resin filler can be differentiated from several commercial products. Considering the characteristics of the OCT, it can be used to evaluate the defects of resin restoration, resin filler distribution, and internal integrity between resin material and tooth structure. The OCT can be considered to be a new and advanced method for the evaluation of resin restorations.

As digital media empowers consumers to initiate and participate in the marketing communication process more than ever, the current study aimed to investigate whether consumer motivations to use media are associated with the concept of psychological distance. Using a general population sample (N = 291) in U.S., psychological distances of four media platforms (i.e., television, mobile, laptop, newspaper) are compared and the relationship between media usage motivations (perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, usage frequency, emotional attachment, and compatibility) and psychological distance are examined. Results indicate that psychological distance varies across media types and the relationship between psychological distance and media usage motivations is mostly positive.

The main objective of this paper is to elucidate the present status of Plant Genetic Resources (PGRs), their research, and management system in the genebank of Nepal. PGRs for food and agriculture are the biological basis of world food and nutrition security. The remarkable elevation ranging from 60 meter above sea level (masl) to highest summit Mount Everest (8,848 masl) has created huge geographical and climatic variation which harbor enormous plant species in the country. National Agriculture Genetic Resource Center (NAGRC) or ‘Genebank’ currently conserved 11,051 accessions of more than 110 crops species belonging to cereals (5,850), pseudo cereals (1,150), pulses (1,800), oilseeds (185), and vegetables (565) including other crops (1,501) at ex-situ. Diversity mapping, characterization and evaluation of PGRs, duplicates identification, diversity study, pre-breeding and landrace enhancement are the major research works of NAGRC, and its management strategies include conservation method, types, and groupings of PGRs. Characterization, evaluation and tagging of economically important traits in PGRs are now more important for strengthening their pre-breeding and proper utilization. Additionally, strong communication and collaborative network among public, private, community based organizations and international organizations are important for the effective management of PGRs.

As increased the cultivating areas of several minor crops for medicine such as Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Astragalus membranaceus, Taraxacum platycarpum, Gynanchum wilfordii, and Purple granadilla, the occurrence of major pests and their damages were severed. Primarily occurred pests on five minor crops were observed small in size pests such as whiteflies, aphids and thrips, but the other pests are insignificantly infest. Whiteflies showed higher density in G. uralensis but its damage was insignificant level. Aphids were showed higher density at June in all minor crops and then sharply decreased the density with lower degree of damage. The high damage on initial growth stage will be judge to affect on the yield. Thrips on T. platycarpum showed higher density with 44.1%, compare to other crops, sharply increased the density in late-June and optimal peak in mid-July and decreased in late-Aug. Conclusively, major pests on crops, green peach aphid, mites species on A. membranaceus and G. uralensis, olender aphid, mites species and thrips on G. wilfordii were damaged. Detailed investigation and analysis for economic value of the damaged pest for the continual production will be promoted and then followed the procedure the registration of agrochemicals.
