In this paper, excitation systems using linear mass shaker (LMS) and active tuned mass damper (ATMD) are presented in order to simulate the wind induced responses of a building structure. The actuator force for the excitation systems is calculated by using the inverse transfer function of a target structural response to the actuator. Filter and envelop function are used such that the error between the wind and actuator induced responses is minimized by preventing the actuator from exciting unexpected modal response and initial transient response. The analyses results from a 76-story benchmark building problem in which wind load obtained by wind tunnel test is given, indicate that the excitation system installed at a specific floor can approximately embody the structural responses induced by the wind load applied to each floor of the structure. The excitation system designed by the proposed method can be effectively used for evaluating the wind response characteristics of a practical building structure and for obtaining an accurate analytical model of the building under wind load.

A standard RC apartment structure was analysed using commercial structural analysis program MIDAS. The effects of TLD were considered by equivalent tuned mass damper model and harmonic load of wmch frequency was identical to that of the RC structure and artificial earthquake loads generated accroding to the design spectrum in KBC2005 were used as excitation loads. TLD showed maximally 70% reduction of peak/RMS relative displacement, interstory drift, acceleration, and story shear induced by harmonic load while it reduced about 20~28% of those structural responses excluding absolute acceleration induced by artificial earthquake loads.

In order to identify the exact behavior of corbel section, the horizontal force acting on corbel section should be considered as well as the vertical force. In this study, a new corbel section, which is economical and easy to construct, is developed by evaluating the exact strength of the section. Experiments were performed to verify the strengths of the proposed sections comparing with those of the currently used section. The summary of the experiment results are as follows: 1) In order to minimize the horizontal force effect, it was found that the use of pre-stressing was most effective, and that TB type corble section is a most efficient section in terms of economy and workability. 2) The experimentally obtained strength of corbel section matched well with that estimated using shear friction theory. Therefore, it is concluded that shear friction theory would be very useful if a precise crack angle in the corble section, which is pre-stressed by PS strings and threaded bolts, is available.

The behavior of the Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD) which has been widely used for mitigating structural vibration is generally modeled by linear wave theory and its vibration control performance is evaluated using Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) analogy. However, some previous studies showed that the properties of the TLD such as natural frequency and damping ratio were dependent on the excitation amplitude. In this study, the dynamic nonlinear characteristics of the TLD are investigated by shaking table test with varying excitation amplitude. In case of harmonic excitation experimentation, the damping ratio, natural frequency, and effective mass are obtained through envelope curves overlap of time-history curve from measured base shear and analogy base shear using simulation a freedom of simple degree modeling. In the white noise experimentation, the parameters obtained through curve-fitting of the transfer function from the table acceleration to the base shear.

This paper presents vibration control of a real-scaled five-story steel structure subjected to horizontal excitation using a semi-active magneto-rheological (MR) damper. A large-sized double-rod MR damper, which is applicable for vibration control of the real-scaled five-story structure, is designed and manufactured on the basis of the field-dependent Bingham model of the MR fluid. The damping force of the MR damper is experimentally evaluated with respect to the excitation frequency at various magnetic fields. After formulating the governing equation of motion for the five-story structure associated with the MR damper, displacement and acceleration responses of the structure are discussed under pseudo earthquake excitation in which a hybrid mass damper is designed to reproduce seismically excited structural responses. The controllers which require only structural response of the damper installed floor for calculating the input current of the MR damper are designed to effectively suppress unwanted structural vibrations

In this study, the vibration control performance of Tuned Liquid Damper(TLD) with nonlinear properties is investigate by a with shaking table test according to large excitation. Until recently, TLDs has been investigated by behavior of liquid using equivalent TMD analogy and liner wave theory. The properties of TLDs assumed immutable but became generally known as a matter of fact TLDs behavior has a nonlinear properties that change the TLDs characteristics according to excitation. It was measured base shear and wave height in water tank at 0.01g to 0.06g as 0.01g intercals and tuned 0.6Hz, 0.8Hz. The result of shaking table test showed trend decreased amplification ratio of base shear and wave height as more increased peak accelearation of vibration, what is more jump frequency that dependent excitation dimension.

Corrosion level of reinforcing bar is investigated in this study. Seventy-two specimens are designed with 12 different target corrosion levels, two types of reinforcing bars, 3 different concrete covers. Corrosion current density, corrosion potential and ohmic resistance of concrete are measured on these specimens using Gecor device. Metal loss measurements are performed in accordance with ASTM G1-90[1], method C3.5[2], after specimens cracked. The actual corrosion weight loss of the steel reinforcing bars is then compared to the result obtained from the corrosion level measurement. Finally, the estimation of corrosion level can be made using electrical potential and current intensity measured. The experimental results show that the actual corrosion levels of steel bars embedded in concrete are less than the expected corrosion levels. And non-destructive corrosion measurement technique is applicable in order to assess corrosion level in reinforcing bars. This study suggests the relationship between corrosion level and measured electrical potential and measured current intensity.

In this study, in order to investigate the effectiveness of tuned liquid damper (TLD) for the seismic performance enhancement of the existing reinforced concrete (RC) apartment structure which is not seismically designed, shaking table test was conducted for the small scale five story RC structure with TLD. TLD model was constructed to have the frequency tuned to the first modal frequency of the structure, 2% mass ratio of the first modal mass, and 0.08 liquid depth ratio. White noise with 0.2~5Hz frequency bandwidth and harmonic load tests were performed using the shaking table at Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, and the displacement and absolute acceleration of each floor were measured. Test results indicate that more than 30% seismic responses reduction can be achieved using TLD for RC structure under white noise and harmonic load.

The apartment structures built using tunnel form method in 1980's, are vulnerable to lateral loads since wall elements don't exist in longitudinal direction and especially they were not seismically designed. In this study, in order to evaluate the seismic performance of those apartment structures, nonlinear analysis was performed and static test was conducted using small scale partial specimen. Both shear and moment should be considered for the structure subject to lateral load. Most existing methods, however, consider only shear force in test specimen because it is difficult to realize the actual moment distribution of the practical structure, and furthermore axial force is often neglected. This study propose a testing method which can realize similar moment and axial force distribution of a specimen to that of the practical structure by controlling the lateral loading condition. Numerical analysis was performed using moment-curvature curve considering stiffness degrading parameter, ductility-based strength and energy dissipation. The result of this study shows that only 15~20% difference exist between analysis and test, which confirms that the performance of wall elements in a non-seismically designed wall type reinforced concrete apartment can be accurately evaluated.

The seismically design of building has objects to minimize in judge of people by preventing brittle fracture and to guarantee serviceability of building. But I come to the conclusion that the seismically design is not easy to use, even though we recently use it applyed with shear wall-type evaluation method, because we don't know how to estimate seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete wall-type apartment and evaluation method of wall-type apartment. so in this study, we conduct analysis program by using MIDAS-Gen & MIDAS-SDS, structure analysis program, after conducting a preliminary evaluation about research apartment by seismic performance evaluation method of existing safety & Technology corporation. In addition we show the problem when research apartment is applied with shear wall-type evaluation method that is estimate and grade of seismic performance level by capacity spectrum method.

Recently, earthquakes occur over 30 times a year in Korea. In addition, earthquakes originating from the neighborhood countries were sensed in Korea and caused serious human casualties and economic loss. In Japan, U.S.A., New Zealand and etc., forces seismic design of building structures to prevent seismic damage. In Korea, seismic design has been applied to building structures with a scale larger than defined in the building code since 1988. However, serious seismic damages are expected for wall-type apartment buildings, which were designed before 1988 without application of seismic design. Therefore, appropriate seismic retrofitting methods that are economical and easy to construct are required for such buildings. In this study, seismic retrofitting methods using steel plates or sections are developed for the wall-type apartment buildings. Proposed retrofitting methods improve lateral stiffness of the wall-slab system without excessive increment of loads on base structure. The effect of retrofitting using plates, T-sections and H-sections was examined experimentally for wall-slap system test models. In the experiment, the performance of the joint and slab of the test models was improved and the retrofitting effect was proved to be excellent.

Earthquake resistance design has been developed many countries like Japan, USA, Mexico, New Zealand etc., which countries have experienced many earthquakes. Nowadays, earthquake resistance design has come into worldwide use. In Korea, the seismic design regulations have been established since 1988 in order to minimize the economic losses. Recently performance based design method has been adopted as a new Earthquake resistance design method. These regulations, however, are targeted for newly constructed buildings, In Korea, there are no regulations for existing buildings that built before 1988. So, we need to prepare the regulations that evaluate the seismic performance, furthermore proper retrofitting design guideline needs to be proposed when remodeling old buildings. This study was performed that many existing apartments is being a Remodeling object when considering the present condition of existing apartment and the problerns of cost and environment in the future plan. When Remodeling construction is reviewed by former the Seismic Performance Evaluation Method, generating problems is evaluation by using Push-over. According to this, it provides the appropriate method of calculating the Seismic Performance Index.

Recent building structures are superior in its ability but they are light and flexible, and so have problems of habitability induced by building vibration. In general, the problem of vertical vibration is not considered in structural design. However, in terms of serviceability for inhabitants in buildings, the estimation of vertical vibration in design stage is important. Characteristics of vertical vibration is changed by modeling method of beam-column joint. To check the characteristics of vertical vibration, many tests and analyses were conducted on constructing building in Seoul. Results of tests and analyses were compared using transfer function. As a results, to check the vertical vibration characteristics, the cramp ratio of beam-column joint must be considered and reduced to 50% ~ 60% in structural design.

This paper proposes substructuring method using experimental model of only upper MDOF structure and verifies its applicability to shaking table test. The structure considered in the test is a five-stoty shear type building model which is divided into two parts, of which one is lower three floors for a numerical substructure and the other is upper two floors for a experinlental substructure. The experimental substructure is excited by the shaking table and the acceleration data for the input of shaking table is obtained numerically from lower numerical part. For implementation of the proposed substructuring method, a controller of the shaking table is designed reflecting experimental model. In comparison with acceleration responses, which are measured from experinlental part of 3rd, 4th, and 5th floor and are numerically calculated from the original five-stoty structure, it is observed that the experimental results match well with the numerical results in both time and frequency domain.

This paper presents the results of experimental investigations on the response control performance of tuned liquid damper(TLD). Steel frame building model is used for the experiments. Shaking table is controled by velocity consol. Experimental variables are mass ratios(u=mass of TLD/mass of structure), shape ratio(depth of water/ length of TLD), number of nets(N) and tuned frequency ratio(fl/fs). Results show that the greater the mass ratio is, the more good the control performance is. So, it can be concluded that TLD is able to be used for the remodeling of existing buildings that are not designed to resist earthquake

Before incorporating the earthquake-resistance design in design code(1988), most of existing residential buildings were built without having lateral resistance capacity in addition to their structural peculiarity such as exterior stair ways, exterior elevator room. For these reasons, the retrofitting research demands for existing buildings arise recently and many retrofitting methods are proposed. These tasks are irnportant to reduce the enormous economic loss and environmental issues. The objective of this study is to predict the perforrnance increase due to various strengthen schemes and suggest adequate strengthen methods for wall type apartment buildings not designed to resist earthquake.

The reinforced concrete wall type apartments built before 1988 in Korea, which are rarely seen in other countries, were constructed using tunnel form method for convenience of construction. Tunnel form method, however, do not arrange bearing walls in the direction of long side of the apartment, and this results in little resistance capability against lateral loads in that direction. Consequently, there exists significant collapse possibility due to the formation of plastic hinge at the joints of wall and slab during earthquake. This study experimentally investigates the reinforcement methods using carbon sheet and L-shaped steel which were not seismically designed. The reinforcement method using carbon sheet and L-shaped angle, has following advantages; construction workability, usage of light-weight material, and little requirement for the installation room. The specimen with steel bar fill up using modified epoxy mortar in the mid-span of the slab shows the same stiffness as the standard specimen without reinforcement and the stiffness of the specimen reinforced by carbon sheets without L-shaped steel was increased by only about 13%, implying that those existing methods cannot provide significant reinforcement effects. For the specimens of which wall-slab joints were reinforced using both carbon sheet and L-shaped steel, the increase of stiffness ranges from 43% to 496% and the increase of energy dissipation amount ranges from 120% to 233%. Also it was identified that the linkage method using penetration bolts was more efficient than the one using expansion anchors in increasing stiffness, strength and energy dissipation capacity.
