Increasing Lepidopteran pests such as Helicoverpa armigera are emerging pests of corn in Korea. They cause huge yield losses and deteriorate the quality of corn crop. We monitored the four major lepidopteran pests in major highland corn growing areas of Korea by employing sex pheromone trap during 2012 to 2015 for understanding those population dynamics. Among these species, H. armigera was found to be the main pest based on the damage intensity (80 ~ 90% of total damage). Some effective insecticides were selected such as Indoxacarb etc. Optimal timing of spraying was estimated at around 70 days after planting (earing season) to control H. armigera. Additional, two species of parasitoids (Therion circumflexum and Ophioninae sp.) was identified from H. armigera. However, more extensive survey for natural enemies is needed to set the natural enemy based control program.

The effects of some essential oils and Sopophora extract on Frankliniella occidentalis adults, Myzus persicae adults, Plutella xylostella larvae, and Spodoptera exigua larvae were investigated. Insecticidal and phytotoxicity activities of emulsion in water formulations containing the active essential oils as active ingredients under laboratory and pot conditions were also tested. Based on these results, NRS-13 and NRS-24 formulations were selected to further assess as follows; the GC and GC-MS analysis on the active essential oils, the quantity analysis of the major components contained in the formulations, their insecticidal activities under pot and field conditions, and their oral, dermal, skin and eye irritation, and fish toxicities. Thus, the NRS-13 (BaechooSaferTM) and NRS-24 (JindiOutTM) formulations could be considered as insecticides for pest control.

Phosphine(PH3) is very effective fumigant and is widely used to control pests. Oxygen treatment was found to enhance phosphine toxicity and reduce fumigation time. We researched the insecticidal activities and synergistic effects of oxygen with phosphine(PH3) against on adult stage of 6 agricultural pests as Frankliniella occidentalis, F. intonsa, Pseudococcus comstocki, Planococcus citri, Myzus persicae and Tetranychus urticae. Adults F. occidentalis, F. intonsa, P. comstocki and P. citri was highly susceptible to PH3 at 2mg/L for 2h treatment. However, M. persicae and T. urticae were showed very low fumigation effects at 2mg/L for 2h treatment. These 2 pests were treated with PH3 to increase the times (16h and 20h). And we also researched the synergistic effects of PH3 under controlled atmospheres of 50% and 80% oxygen(O2). Increase of the time and atmospheric oxygen showed improving activities of the PH3 in the 2 agricultural pests. Therefore, PH3 is an effective fumigant against F. occidentalis, F. intonsa, P. comstocki and P. citri, and its synergistic effect with oxygen is effective to control M. persicae and T. urticae. PH3 with oxygen could be useful for managing the agricultural and quarantine pests.

Information on spatial distribution and peak occurrence is important for site and time specific pest management. So, we investigated seasonal occurrence and edge distribution of major soybean pests by visual count in six commercial fields located in Andong from July 16 to October 23 in 2015. We found a total of 19 species in 10 families. The major pest during vegetative stage was Medythia nigrobilineata (Motschulsky) while Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) and Halyomorpha halys (Stal) showed peak occurrence during reproductive stage of soybean. Aphis glycines Matsumura was found throughout the season. Seasonal density of M. nigrobilineata was 0.20 and 0.38/plant in edge and interior without significance, respectively. The infestation of A. glycine was also found similar between edge and interior. Immatures of R. pedestris and H. halys distributed more in edge (0.21 and 0.36/plant) than interior (0.12 and 0.12/plant), respectively. The application of these informations on spatial distribution pattern of soybean pest was discussed.

Prior to 1990s, most farmers customarily sprayed the agrochemicals that only just recommended by association or pesticide dealers, regardless of the monitoring for the disease incidences and pest occurrences. In 1993, agrochemicals sprayed in apple orchards a year had been done about 15 ~16 times. As founded the Apple Research Station (ARS) in 1991, a study for the construction of Integrated Pest Managements (IPMs) were actively done during 1990s and the IPM was paved the way to control on apple diseases and pests during the 2000s. The co-work between ARS and Seoul National University during 1996 to 2001 for the monitoring and development of IPM strategies using sex pheromone made easy understanding for IPM and occurrence monitoring results by showing the pests to apple farmers. Through the 2000s, IPM pilot project for the distribution of IPM technique utilizing sex pheromone trap and mating disrupter to the field has endeavored. Currently, sex pheromone trap plays an important role for monitoring of the major apple pests and the quarantine pest, C. sasakii on apple. Moreover, sex pheromonebased mating disruptor has been used almost all organic apple orchards for the control of one of major fruit-infesting pest, G. molesta and C. sasakii. Henceforth, the application of sex pheromone trap for monitoring as well as the active expansion and provision of mating disruptor for the control is needed. To this, first of all, it is very important to reduce prices by developing the techniques than other things. Second, reinforced education for monitoring staffs must be done continuously to instruct and to consult the farmers with the monitoring results to give guidance. Third, companies competing in good faith will improve and maintain their product quality.

This research is aiming to develop generic attractants for lepidopteran pests that can be used as a control tool for environmentally friendly management against the lepidopteran pests in orchards. During the first year of this research we carried out various trapping experiments in apple orchards in Korea. Field trapping experiments were carried out at two apple orchards in UaiSung-Gun, GyungBuk Province during May – September 2010, using different rice wines and fruit-based fermenting baits. Overall, when six major moth pest species(Grapholita molesta, Carposina sasakii, Adoxophyes orana, Choristoneura longicellana, Archippus breviplicanus, Phyllonorycter ringoniella) in apple orchards were counted, 445 moths were captured in raw material-baited traps and 1,566 moths in sex pheromone-baited traps. There were no clear differences in the attractiveness to the moths between different kinds of rice wines and fruit baits when the attractiveness of fifteen different rice wines and seven fermenting fruit baits were compared in the apple orchards. One rice wine (‘Chung-ju’ rice wine) and fermenting pineapple showed somewhat higher attractiveness to G. molesta than other raw baits, which will be re-examined in 2011 – 2012 periods.

This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence patterns of sporadic and major insect pests in Gyeonggi Province Area. Lantern fly (Lycorma delicatula) damages to reduce the yield and quality of commodities in grape orchard begin to emergence from the early May, and new adults have appeared from the middle July lay eggs till the early November. The hatchability of eggs laid in last year was influenced by the extremely low temperature (especially -20℃ and under) in over-wintering season. Sweet-potato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is widely distributed in the southern part of gyeonggi province, and the biotype of most regional populations is Q-type except the partial Goyang area population (B-type). Potato tuber moth (Phthorimaea operculella) had been reported firstly in 2009 expanded and was confirmed in the northern part of gyeonggi province in 2010. Citrus flatid planthopper (Metcalfa pruinosa), becoming an issue in Korea, have been detected apple (Paju), pear (Yongin, paju), grape (Paju) orchards in 2010.

The devastating insect pests of the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) were surveyed in environmentally friendly (no-pesticide and organic) greenhouses located in the provinces of Gyeonggi, Gyeongsang, Gangwon, Chungcheong and Jeju. Whitefly, leaf miner, aphid and moth were recorded as the major pests in these surveys. Among them, whitefly was the most serious pest of greenhouse cultivated tomato and major species was Trialeurodes vaporariorum. The population densities of T. vaporariorum was 0~36 nymph per leaf. Population of moths Spodoptera litura were the highest in summer season. Population of the whitefly was considered to be influenced by the previous cultural methods. Farmers in organic cultivation, used insect natural enemy, commercial EFAM (Environment Friendly Agricultural Material), yellow sticky trap or home made pesticides. Commercial microbial pesticides were applied to evaluate their insecticidal activities against whitefly. The results revealed that microbial pesticides exhibited 65.3 to 100% whitefly nymph mortality. Further, pesticidal activities of Cooking Oil and Yolk (COY), plant extracts and neem oil were evaluated against other tomato pests as well.

Myzus persicae, Heliothis assulta and Frankliniella occidentalis are major pepper pests in Korea. The objective of this study was to assess the pepper-yield decrease caused by population change of M. persicae, H. assulta and F. occidentalis. with temperature elevation. It is easy to expect that climate change will increase crop damage caused by pests. Therefore we should predict pest-population dynamics exactly and find the best available strategy for the pest management. Based on the many reported results of temperature development of the three kinds of pest, we simulated the future population dynamics using the computer softwater, DYMEX, developed by CSIRO. The results were that the population sizes and outbreak frequency of 3 kinds pest would increase with global warming. This work may be helpful to establish an effective pest management.

The study investigated occurrence of major insect pests and damage to 16-30 representative apple orchards in major apple production area of 4-8 cities and counties in Gyeongsang Provinces and Jeonbuk province for 17 years from 1992 to 2008. In addition, it examined the hatching time of the overwintered eggs of European red mite (Panonychus ulmi) and apple leaf-curling aphid (Myzus malisuctus) at the Apple Research Station in Gunwi-gun, the Gyeongbuk Province from 1993 to 2009, and conducted a survey on the occurrence rate of oriental fruit moth (Grapholita molesta) and peach fruit moth by means of sex pheromone traps at 2-5 day intervals to look into the changes in the occurrence. As the result of survey on the insect pests of representative apple orchards, the population density of two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) was higher then that of Panonychus ulmi from 1992 to 1999 while it became lower than Panonychus ulmi from 2000. Although there was difference in spiraea aphid (Aphis citricola) by year, but the occurrence density tended to decline from 1992. Lyonetia prunifoliella had not become a problem in apple orchards before the 1990’s, but it started occurring in 1993-1994 and increased rapidly in the late 1990’s. Later, it has consistently increased as leafminer with Phyllonorycter ringoniella in apple orchards. Tortricid insect pests increased the most highly in the late 1990’s, but it has not been a problem after 2000 and the occurrence and damage by Grapholita molesta was higher than that of Carposina sasakii in apple orchards after 1997. Besides, the damage by stink bugs as well as ambrosia beetles has increased after 2000. In the 2000’s, the initial hatching date of overwintered eggs of Panonychus ulmi and Myzus malisuctus ulmi was 18 and 14 days earlier, the 50% hatching date was 7 and 6 days earlier, and the final hatching date was 1 and three days earlier respectively than that of the 1990’s. In the 2000’s, the first occurrence of Grapholita molesta and Carposina sasakii was earlier by 5 days compared to the 1900’s, and the first occurrence of apple insect pests tended to become earlier compared to the 1990’s.

This study was conducted to examine the problems that would arise in our cropping systems when introducing Gain Threshold (GT) which is an important element in determining Economic Injury Level (EIL). Gain Threshold (GT) can be defined as the amount of damage (= yield loss) to justify management, and calculated by dividing the management costs by the market crop price. GTs for some pests in rice, soybean, and greenhouse vegetable crops cultivation were estimated and also compared with those in foreign countries. GTs and percentage of yield loss equivalent to them were estimated to be 4.6-6.1 ㎏/10a/season and 1.0-1.3% for brown planthopper, white-backed planthopper, rice water weevil, and sheath blight, whereas for rice blast in rice cultivation were 12.7 ㎏/10a/season and 2.7%. In soybean cultivation, the values for bean bug were 6.2 ㎏/10a/season and 3.6%. GTs and percentage of yield loss estimated for melon thrips, whitefly, and downy mildew in cucumber cultivation were 10.0-12.6 ㎏/10a/week, 1.4-1.7%, and the values for two spotted mite and gray mildew in strawberry cultivation were 3.1-3.5 ㎏/10a/week, 1.3-1.5%, and the values for American leaf minor, whitefly, and gray mold in tomato were 8.4-9.7 ㎏/10a/week, 1.7-1.9%. Overall GTs in our cropping systems were so low compared to those in foreign countries, which meant that the low GTs might yield the low EILs. Therefore, we could suggest that prior to direct introduction of GTs calculated from current cultivation systems in developing EILs it is necessary to seriously consider reasonable values of GTs or the yield loss equivalents to them.

Insect pests attacking the leaf of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were surveyed in environmentally frendly leaf-lettuce-greenhouses in Hwaseong, Namyangju, and Suwon from 2003 to 2004. Sixteen insect species of eleven families in eight orders were collected in greenhouses. Among them, Acyrthosiphon solani, Frankliniella occidentalis, and Autographa nigrisigna were the most serious pest species because of their damage ratio was over 30%. Population of Acyrthosiphon solani showed the highest peak one or two times between mid-April and early June in both the second and the third cropping period. Frankliniella occidentalis reached the highest peak one or two times, the first peak between mid-June and the late July, and the second peak between the mid-August and the mid-October. Autographa nigrisigna reached the highest peak one or times between early June and late July and in the mid-August to late October. The highest peak occurrence of A. solani was observed in early June as many as 4,836 nymphs and adults per 100 leaves. And for F. occidentalis it was in early July occurring 437 larvae and adults per 100 leaves, for A. nigrisigna in early October occurring 42 larvae per 100 leaves. The density of F. occidentalis and its damage as well was greater in soil culture than in hydroponic culture, but in case of both A. solani and A. nigrisigna no such difference between cropping systems was found.
