        북서태평양의 바람 변동이 1970년대 이후에 나타난 ENSO의 십년 주기 변화에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. SODA 자료를 이용한 SVD 분석을 통하여 ENSO 절정기에 북서태평양에서 나타나는 양의 바람 응력 컬이 적도 지역에서의 열함유량을 방출/재충전(discharge/recharge)시켜 ENSO의 위상을 변화시킨다는 것을 보였다. ENSO와 연관된 북서태평양의 바람 응력 컬은 1970년대 이전에 강하게 나타났다. 이러한 강한 바람 응력 강제력은 적도의 열함유량을 빠르게 방출시켰고, 결과로서 1960-1970년대 기간 동안에 ENSO의 주기가 짧고 강도가 악하게 나타났다 반면에 1970년대 후반 이후에는 북서태평양 바람 응력의 컬이 약해지면서 ENSO의 주기가 길어지고 강도가 강해졌다. 간단한 대기-해양 접합 모델 실험으로 관측 자료 분석 결과와 유사하게 북서태평양 지역에서 바람 응력 컬이 더 많이 해양에 작용할 때 ENSO의 진폭과 주기가 감소하는 것을 보였다. 이 결과들은 1970년대 후반 이후에 나타난 ENSO특징의 변화가 북서태평양 지역에서의 바람 응력의 변화와 관련이 있다는 것을 제시한다.

        This paper summarizes characteristics of the Korean tuna purse seine fishery in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO). Major fishing area for the Korean tuna purse seine fleet consisted of the waters of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands and adjacent high seas between 130˚E-180˚ The center of the Korean tuna fishing ground was in the vicinity of 180˚ during the El - Niño event but was formed in 150˚-160˚E during the La - Niño event. As compared with other major purse seine fleets in WCPO, the Korean fleet set more on unassociated schools of tuna, while Japan, USA and Chinese - Taipei fleets accounted for more than 50% of sets on log - associated schools. In general, CPUES for log - associated schools were higher than those for unassociated schools and catch composition showed that yellowfin ratio was higher in unassociated shools than log - associated schools. Length frequency represented higher percentage of mid - sized yellowfin than Japanese and USA fleets. Daily set numbers and CPUE were high before 7 am and remained almost constant from 7 am to 3 pm but decreased rapidly after 3 pm and 5 pm, respectively. Catch composition per set indicated that pure skipjack school was caught most frequently, followed by mixed school and pure yellowfin school as the least, but CPUE was highest for the mixed school.

        Specificity of catches has been analyzed to japanese tuna purse seine A principle component analysis was used to improve the efficiency of fishing and increase sustainable production and productivity of Korean tuna purse seine.The result are as follows;From the principal component analysis of the fish catches, the first principal component(Z1) to promote principal component score was skipjack Kastsuwonus Pelamis, LINNAEUS and yellowfin tuna Thunnus Albacares, BONNATERRE (Small : smaller than 10kg) and proportion was 86.8% of total. The second principal component(Z2) to increase principal component score was yellowfin tuna (Large : larger than 10kg) and proportion was 9.5%.On the other hand, fish operating that have caught skipjack and yellowfin tuna (Small and Larger) was not so much. Fish catches for one species raised volume of the catches while catches for multi-species decreased it since principal composition score for one species and both species together has been increased.Fish school could be divided into three groups of schools each of which was associated with drift objects, payaho and ship, school associated with shark, whale and porpoise and school of breezing, feeding and jumping from proportion of principal component analysis for fish catches of school types. However, the biological pattern is different among school associated with ship, payaho and school associated with drift objects for analysis eigen vector. School associated with ship, payaho and school associated with drifting object associated is judged as school which be assembled to vessel and drifted log temporary.

        It was investigated that the condition of fishing ground gave what kind of effect school type in relation to the property for the target school after the vertical temperature profile and school type were observed when tuna purse seiner for tuna purse seine was operated in the western pacific Ocean around the equator between December 12, 1993 and January 26, 1994. The results are as follows;1. This study divided fish schools associated with drift objects, a one targeted-operation, and the pelagic migrating fish schools that are another one for the property. The total of 23 operations were complected including 6 that targeted fish schools associated with drift objects and 17 that targeted pelagic migrating fish schools. It was known that the main operation was conducted on pelagic migrating fish school.2. Average and standard deviation of the depth of the surface mixing layer was 86.0m and 13.8m for fish schools associated with drift objects. 61.6m and 13.0m for pelagic migrating fish schools, respectively. The average depth of the surface mixing layer of the pelagic migrating fish schools was lower when compared to the fish schools associated with drift objects however the concentration of standard deviation was higher than those fish schools associated with drifted objects. Accordingly, it was assumed that the effect of vertical temperature profile for pelagic migrating fish school was higher than the fish schools associated with drift objects.

        Temperal and spacial analysis for catches have been drawing up a catch distribution chart and analysing catches and CPUE(Catch Per Unit Effort) using catch data with purpose of obtaining basic data to establish a selective method of effective fishing the tuna purse seine fishing ground.The temperature profile section and catch was surveyed to analyse the effect of catch in relation to the fishing ground environment.The results are as follows ;1. As for the catch variation between 1983 and 1984, the catch mainly took place on150˚E, and after that it moved eastward enlarging the range of catch. In the monthly catch variation between January and February, the catches mainly happened on 135˚~ 150˚E, and then moved to the gradually westward. However, from July it moved to the South and from October Southeast.2. As to the eatch ratio for the school associated with the drifted object, the pelagic migrating school and the school associated with the biological objects, the catch ratio for the school associated with the drift objects was the highest. The catch ratio for the school associated with the drifted object was high in June, July and November whiles between January and March for the pelagic migrating school.3. SST(Sea Surface Temperature) was around 28~29〈/TEX〉C〈/TEX〉 on the observing line of 137˚E〈/TEX〉 and the catches took place in the north equatorial counter-current situated on around 5˚~6˚N. SST in the northern summer was 1〈/TEX〉C〈/TEX〉higher than winter and it was about 29~30〈/TEX〉C〈/TEX〉. The catch happened with the center of north equatorial counter-current. The reason why the catch mainly took place on the north equatorial counter-current is that main catch of tuna purse seine was the school associated with drift objects. It is thought that the fishing grounds are made in waters that have many drift objects like drift logs from the coast.

        In this study the presence of pulse in formation of marginal basins through calculation of production rates based on the age of 22 marginal basins distributed in the western Pacific is revealed. The peaks of their productions appear approximately at 0 Ma, 30 Ma and 60 Ma, with the interval of about 30 my. Production peak appears to be the largest near 30 Ma (45 × 10⁴ ㎢). From the fluctuation of production rates, continuous production of marginal basins after 0 Ma (present-day) is inferred, and it is very likely that a production peak which is considerably higher than 30 Ma peak would appear in the future. Such upward inclination of production rates of marginal basins is vividly contrasting to downward decline of those of normal oceans. During the period of declining activities between 10 Ma and 15 Ma no activities of marginal basins are observed. When the marginal basins are classified into back-arc and non back-arc basins on the basis of their evolutionary processes, it is observed that back-arc basins appear to have cyclic production peaks approximately at 0 Ma, 20 Ma and 45 Ma, with the interval of about 20 my. The present-day back-arc basins appear to he most active in their productions. The phenomenon of fluctuations in the quantity of production upto now shows a upward climbing trend. The periods with less activity of back-arc basins appear to have been active in arc volcanism. It is considered that the formation of marginal basins and arc volcanism have been alternately active with time. Non back-arc basins seem to have been formed concentrically at about 25 Ma - 35 Ma and 55 Ma - 80 Ma. In the back-arc basins distributed near northwestern (NW) and southwestern (SW) Pacific around equator, it is revealed that production peak has been moved from SW (55 - 80 Ma) through NW (15 - 55 Ma) to SW (0 - 10 Ma) Pacific in time and space. It is supposed that the periodic formation of marginal basins with time is associated with spatial cycles.

        The fishing conditions of flying squid, ommastrePhes barsram(Lesueur), in the North Pacific Ocean was studied based on the horizontal water temperature data, satellite data from NOAA and statistical data of flying squid fisheries which were collected from 1980 to 1984. The obtained results were as follows; 1. Since 1979, the Korean drift giIlnet fishery for flying squid was launched in North Pacific. Number of operating vessel and catch of flying squid increased gradually every year. The number of vessels were 111 and their annual catches were 42, 977 M/T in 1984. Therefore, Korean drift giIlnet fishery for this species has played an important role in the products of Korean high-sea fisheries. 2. In the beginning of the fisheries, fishing grounds was formed in the west of long. 1800E. In 1982, in consequence of the center which extended eastward, the fishing ground was formed long. 166˚W in the central North Pacific Ocean. Since 1983, the fishing grounds were formed as far as long. 161˚W. The range of general fishing season in the central North Pacific was from June to August. After september, fishing ground was shifted to the west, in the Northwestern Pacific. 3. The Predominant fishing season for the flying squid was August through January of the coming year. Optimum water temperature for flying sguid at surface layer in the Pacific Ocean ranged from 11 ˚e to 17˚e in winter, 13˚e to 17˚e in spring, 12. 8˚C to 19.7˚e in summer and 1O.6˚e -18.7˚e in fall. 4. In summer, the Oceanographic condition in the North Pacific Ocean showed that the water temperature at surface layer was lower in 1980, 1983 and higher in 1981, 1982 and 1984 as compared with mean annual water temperature. 5. The characteristics df oceanographic conditions in the fluation, disformation, mixing and other factors of the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents, which have considerably influenced upon the water masses of the areas. 6. The data and information on surface thermal Structure interpreted from Infrared Satellite Imaginary from NOAA-7 and NOAA-8 are very available in estimating water temperature on the areas and investigating the major fishing grounds. 7. According to the fisheries statics of Japanese drift gilInet, the annual catches of flying squid considerably decreased from 225, 942 M/T in 1983 to 133, 217 M/T in 1984. 8. The fishing grounds in the central North Pacific in several fishing seasons were formed as follows: In June, the initial fishing season, the fishing grounds were formed in the vicinity of lat. 35 - 40oN, the central North Pacific east of 179˚E. In July, the fishing ground were formed in the wide arEa of the central North Pacific north of 400N and long. 174˚E-145˚W In Auguest, concentrative fishing operation carried out in :he central North Pacific north of 43˚N and East of 165˚W. On the other hand, in September, main fishing grounds were disappeared and moved to the west.

        This study evaluated the performance of GFDL HiRAM, a fine resolution AGCM, in the simulation of GPI (Genesis Potential Index) of tropical cyclone and its temporal variation over the Western North Pacific (WNP). We analyzed the AMIP simulation by the AGCM for the 30-year (1979-2008) forced by observed sea surface temperatures as the lower boundary condition. Since GPI depends on the five large-scale environmental factors(850 hPa absolute vorticity, 700 hPa relative humidity, vertical wind shear, maximum potential intensity, and 500 hPa vertical velocity), the biases of the simulation are examined for these factors as well as GPI itself. The results are compared with the ECMWF Interim reanalysis (ERA-I), and the analyses show that both the mean spatial pattern and the seasonal cycle of GPI over the WNP are reasonably simulated by HiRAM. But the magnitude of GPI is significantly underestimated due to the combined contribution of negative biases in four factors excluding the low-level vorticity. It is demonstrated that the three leading modes of spatio-temporal variability of GPI in EOF analysis for ERA-I are associated with ENSO, climate change with long-term trends, and SST anomalies over the WNP. The response of GPI to ENSO is more or less captured by HiRAM, including the east-west shift of Typhoon genesis location. However, it is supposed that unrealistic response of GPI and its factors to La-Nina or eastern Pacific El-Nino is an important shortcoming of HiRAM. In addition, HiRAM fails to reproduce the characteristic spatiotemporal variation associated with the climate change mode of GPI. The key findings from this study provide helpful guidance for improvement of HiRAM.

        Understanding solar influences on extreme weather is important. Insight into the causes of extreme weather events, including the solar-terrestrial connection, would allow better preparation for these events and help minimize the damage caused by disasters that threaten the human population. In this study, we examined category three, four, and five tropical cyclones that occurred in the western North Pacific Ocean from 1977 to 2016. We compared long-term trends in the positions of tropical cyclone occurrence and development with variations of the observed sunspot area, the solar North-South asymmetry, and the southern oscillation index (SOI). We found that tropical cyclones formed, had their maximum intensity, and terminated more northward in latitude and more westward in longitude over the period analyzed; they also became stronger during that period. It was found that tropical cyclones cannot be correlated or anti-correlated with the solar cycle. No evidence showing that properties (including positions of occurrence/development and other characteristics) of tropical cyclones are modulated by solar activity was found, at least not in terms of a spectral analysis using the wavelet transform method.

        Solar activity is known to be linked to changes in the Earth’s weather and climate. Nonetheless, for other types of extreme weather, such as tropical cyclones (TCs), the available evidence is less conclusive. In this study the modulation of TC genesis over the western North Pacific by the solar activity is investigated, in comparison with a large-scale environmental parameter, i.e., El-Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). For this purpose, we have obtained the best track data for TCs in the western North Pacific from 1977 to 2016, spanning from the solar cycle 21 to the solar cycle 24. We have confirmed that in the El-Niño periods TCs tend to form in the southeast, reach its maximum strength in the southeast, and end its life as TSs in the northeast, compared with the La-Niña periods. TCs occurring in the El-Niño periods are found to last longer compared with the La-Niña periods. Furthermore, TCs occurring in the El-Niño periods have a lower central pressure at their maximum strength than those occurring in the La-Niña periods. We have found that TCs occurring in the solar maximum periods resemble those in the El-Niño periods in their properties. We have also found that TCs occurring in the solar descending periods somehow resemble those in the El-Niño periods in their properties. To make sure that it is not due to the ENSO effect, we have excluded TCs both in the El-Niño periods and in the La-Niña periods from the data set and repeated the analysis. In addition to this test, we have also reiterated our analysis twice with TCs whose maximum sustained winds speed exceeds 17 m/s, instead of 33 m/s, as well as TCs designated as a typhoon, which ends up with the same conclusions.

        This study analyzes the characteristics of Western North Pacific (WNP) tropical cyclone (TC) activity and large-scale environments according to the Western Pacific (WP) teleconnection pattern in summer. In the positive WP phase, an anomalous cyclone and an anomalous anticyclone develop in the low and middle latitudes of the East Asia, respectively. As a result, southeasterlies are reinforced in the northeast area of the East Asia including Korea and Japan which facilitates the movement of TC to this area, whereas northwesterlies are reinforced in the southwest area of the East Asia including South China and Indochina Peninsula which blocks the movement of TC to this area. Due to the spatial distribution of this reinforced pressure system, TCs develop, move, and turn more to the northeast of WNP than those in the negative WP phase. Consequently, the characteristics of this TC activity in the positive WP phase are associated with the location of upper tropospheric jet further to the northeast. Meanwhile, TCs in the negative WP phase mainly move to the west from Philippines toward south China and Indochina Peninsula. Furthermore, due to the terrain effect caused by the high passage frequency of TCs in the mainland China, the intensity of TCs are weaker than those in the positive WP phase.

        This study analyzes the correlation between Western Pacific (WP) teleconnection pattern index (WPI) in April during 1954-2008 and rainfall amounts in the same month. Based on the results, it is identified that there have been strong positive correlations between central China, Korea and the southwestern part of Japan in the East Asian region. Through differences between 10 positive WP years and 10 negative WP years selected from the April WPI excluding ENSO years, it is found that rainfall amounts increase in April of positive WP years due to the following characteristics. Increases in rainfall amounts are evident in the East Asian middle latitudinal region where the positive correlation between the two variables is the highest and this is because anomalous southwesterlies are strengthened in the East Asian middle latitudinal region due to the spatial pattern of a south-low-north-high anomalous pressure system centered on this region that is made by anomalous anticyclones centered on the southeastern side of the region and other anomalous anticyclones centered on the northeastern side of the region. In addition, anomalous westerlies (jet) are strengthen in the upper troposphere of the East Asian middle latitudinal region and as a result, anomalous upward flows are strengthened in this region and thus anomalous warm air temperatures are formed in the entire level of the troposphere in the region. In addition to atmospheric environments, anomalous warm sea surface temperatures are formed in the seas in the East Asian middle latitudinal region to help the rainfall amount increases in the East Asian middle latitudinal region.

        This study analyzed the change in tropical cyclone (TC) activity according to the fluctuation in July-to-September average North Pacific Oscillation index (NPOI) and its underlying large-scale environment during the last 37 years from 1977 to 2013. For this purpose, seven years with highest index NPOI value (positive NPOI phase) and another seven years with lowest NPOI index value (negative NPOI phase) among the 37 years were selected as sample after excluding the ENSO years. During the positive NPOI phase, TCs were created in the east of tropical and subtropical western North Pacific and moved to the west from the Philippines toward the southern region in China or toward far eastern sea of Japan. Meanwhile, during the negative NPOI phase, TCs tended to proceed to the north toward Korea or Japan passing East China Sea from the eastern sea of the Philippines. As a result, also in the TC recurvature, TCs in positive NPOI phase showed a tendency of recurving toward more eastern direction compared to TCs in negative NPOI phase. Hence, TC intensity was stronger in negative NPOI phase which allowed more time for obtaining energy from the ocean.

        This paper reexamines the interannual intensity change of tropical cyclone (TC) over the western North Pacific. Analyses are done for the annual extreme intensity and the average intensity of the five strongest typhoons based on the best track data issued from the RSMC (Regional Specialized Meteorological Center) Tokyo and the JTWC (Joint Typhoon Warning Center). Trends over the last 30+ years in one data set are nearly opposite in another. Specifically, the TC intensity tends to increase with the years in the JTWC data, whereas the opposite is found in the RSMC data. Realizing that one data set shows a significant statistical difference from the other, a homogenization process has been applied to the original data so that comparisons of the two data sets and the trend analyses become more meaningful than those with solely the original data. With the homogenized data, we present some cautious conclusions regarding the TC intensity changes over the western North Pacific. The annual extreme TC intensity has been decreasing, while the strong TCs have become stronger over the years. For TCs entering the KMA emergency area and directly hitting Korea, we are hesitant to make any conclusions because the corresponding area is small so that the number of TCs entering the area each year is too small to have any statistically significant implications.

        This study recognized five annual cycle modes of the tropical cyclone (TC) activity in the western North Pacific using the CMA-STI data by an objective-oriented K-means cluster analysis approach. The five annual cycle modes include one normal mode and four abnormal modes: a weakened mode, two enhanced modes, and an anti-seasonal mode which suggests TC activities are enhanced in early season but suppressed in peak season. The yearly storm number and storm lifespan of both the weakened mode and the anti-seasonal mode are different from those of the two enhanced modes. The annual amplitudes of TC activity seem to be closely associated with the area of TC genesis. The discrepancies are obvious in frequencies of the five modes. However, comparison with both JMA and JTWC data suggests that the seasonality of TC activity has large bias.

        This study found that tropical cyclones (TCs) formed for fall in 2007 over the western North Pacific were distributed in high-latitudes comparing to 56-year (1951-2006) climatological mean. The frequency and latitude of TC genesis became higher than 56-year climatological mean from September onward in 2007 and all the TCs that formed to the north of 20°N was also distributed after September in 2007. These characteristics of TC genesis for fall in 2007 could be confirmed through analyzing various variables, such as a large-scale atmospheric circulation, outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), vertical zonal wind shear, and sea surface temperature (SST). On the other hand, a frequency of the TC that occurred to the north of 20°N showed a clear interdecadal variation and its decreasing trend was distinctive in recent years. Its intensity was also weaker that TCs that did to the south of 20°N. However, a latitude of TC genesis showed an increasing trend until recent years, whose variation was consistent with trend that through a SST analysis, warm SST went north in recent years.
