본 연구에서는 국가기반시설의 연쇄적인 운영중단을 효율적으로 차단하기 위하여 시설간 상호의존도 분석 방법론을 개발하였다. 2003년 발생한 미국 동부지역의 대정전, 2011년 일본 동북부 대지진까지 재난은 점점 더 대형화, 복잡화되어 가고 있다. 특히 동일본 대지진에서 동북부에 발생한 지진으로 인한 기반시설의 피해가 서부지역으로까지 파급된 것처럼, 국가기반시설(Critical Infrastructure)에 발생한 재난은 타 지역에 위치한 다른 국가기반시설로 재난영향이 파급되면서, 피해규모가 더욱 커지는 현상을 보이고 있다. 이에 국외에서는 기반시설간의 연쇄적인 기능마비를 방지하기 위하여 개념적 접근, 시뮬레이션적 접근, 경험적 접근방식 등을 통해 기반시설간 상호의존도를 파악하여 기반시설 보호계획을 수립하고 있다. 국내에서도 2003년 화물노조 파업을 시작으로 국가기반시설에 대한 관리를 강화하고 있으나, 각 시설 단위에만 그 범위가 국한되어 있는 실정이다. 하지만 2011년 9.15 대정전과 같이 국내에서도 국가기반시설에 발생한 재난이 사회 각 부문에 영향을 미친 사례가 있을 뿐만 아니라 원자력발전소의 잦은 중단으로 인한 전력수급의 불안정성이 커지고 있는 상황에서 국가기반시설간 중요도 및 상호의존도를 파악하는 것은 매우 시급한 사안이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 기반시설의 다양성과 특정분야의 전문성을 반영할 수 있는 국가기반시설 상호의존도 분석 방법론을 개발하였다. 또한 상호의존도 분석 방법론을 재난선진국의 연구결과와 비교 검토하여 타당성을 검증하였다.

At this paper two types of initial shapes and loads are introduced, and we assume that the initial shapes and loads are defined by sinusoidal functions. Under this assumption the asymptotical stability of the solutions is established by investigating the eigenvalues of the characteristic polynomial of the system. The exact solution is obtained when the initial shape and the load are given by a linear combination of sinusoidal functions. The asymptotic stability of the arch is completely analysed.

This study is a critical analysis on the 10 Years (2002-2012) of the denominational activities since the 5 Districts were merged into one national district of the Church of the Nazarene in Korea. The purpose of this study is to search for an advanced way to promote Church of the Nazarene for effective church growth in the coming era in Korea. For this purpose it attempts to evaluate the efforts and results of the unification of the five districts into one in relation to history and church growth of the denomination. Indeed, the merging of the five districts into one was a historical event in the mist of divisions and conflicts of the churches and denominations in Korea. Also the merging event was a distinctive model for innovative cultural adaptation from the perspective of international Church of the Nazarene. This essay discovered some positive results from the unification, that enhanced the identity of the Nazarene Church, administrative consolidation for ordination process, church planting, and unified relations with the international church as well as Korea Nazarene University. However, still the unified church needs an innovative dimension of leadership system for effective church growth. This essay proposes that the pyramid model of the unified church needs to be transformed into an organic or post-hierarchical system. Already, the name of “International Headquarter of the Church of the Nazarene” was changed to “Global Ministry Center” to abolish the existing pyramid model of leadership toward organic model, which is the fundamental Biblical model of leadership for effective church growth. This essay insists that Nazarene Church in Korea also needs to work on having a less hierarchical system of the Church for effective church growth, that is one of the main movements of postmodern evangelical churches,

Early growth response 1 (Egr1) belongs to the Egr family of zinc finger transcription factors (Egr1 to Egr4) that regulates cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. Egr1(-/-) female mice are infertile due to anovulation resulting from luteinizing hormone β subunit (LHβ) deficiency. While it is clear that Egr1 is critical for LHβ transcription in the pituitary gland, function of Egr1 in uterus still remain unexplored. Uteri on various experimental conditions or days of pregnancy were collected for mRNA microarrays, realtime-RT-PCR, Western blotting, and histological analyses for immunofluorescence and BrdU staining. Egr1 and other Egr family members, Egr2 and Egr3 are highly expressed in the uterus on day 4 of pregnancy (Day 4). While ovulation, fertilization and embryo development normally occur in Egr1(-/-) mice treated with a superovulation regime to rescue LH deficiency, embryo implantation was completely failed. In addition to implantation failure, oviductal transport of embryos is also impaired in these mice. 17/24 Egr1(-/-) mice (71%) retained blastocysts in the oviduct as well as in the uterus of Egr1(-/-) mice on Day 4 whereas all Egr1(+/+) mice have them in the uterus. While serum levels of E2 and P4 in Egr1(-/-) mice on Day 4 were comparable to those of wildtypes, expression of E2 responsive genes which are expressed in luminal epithelium, such as Mucin 1 and lactoferrin, is aberrantly increased in Egr1(-/-) mice with embryos in the oviduct on Day 4. In contrast, P4 responsive genes such as Hoxa10 and amphiregulin are normally expressed in these mice. Collectively, these data suggest that Egr1 deficiency in the oviduct and uterus leads to estrogen hypersensitivity. BrdU incorporation experiments provided evidence that epithelial cells undergo hyperproliferation in Egr1(-/-) mice. This is consistent with microarray data that several key factors for cell cycle progression such as cyclin Ds and E2F1 are overexpressed in these mice. Furthermore, in the uteri of Egr1(-/-) mice treated with E2+P4, stromal cell proliferation is severely impaired and epithelial cells persistently proliferating. With respect to decidualization, Egr1 as well as Egr2 and Egr3 are induced immediately after decidualization stimuli were given. Although the responses were relatively less than those of wildtype mice, decidualization does occur in Egr1(-/-) mice. Relatively compromised decidualization responses seems to result from functional compensation of Egr2 and Egr3 in Egr1(-/-) deficient uteri. Collectively, our results show that Egr1 is a critical transcription factor to fine-tune estrogen responses via regulation of a spectrum of genes for embryo implantation in the uterus.

이 연구에서는 Fairclough의 비판적 담론분석 모델을 적용하여 서울시 무상급식 정책결정과정에 나타난 정책담론들이 수행하는 역할 및 특성을 규명하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 담론 투쟁과정에서 부각된 담론들에 대한 신문기사의 텍스트 분석을 통해 진보와 보수의 논리를 기술하고, 양자 간 대립하며 전개하고 있는 담론을 해석하였다. 또한, 사회적 실천관계에서는 정책이 형성되는 상황적 맥락과 결정이 이루어지는 제도적 맥락을 살펴보았다. 연구결과에 따른 이 연구의 결론 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 서울시 무상급식 정책결정과정에서 정책담론들은 진보와 보수 세력들의 정치적 이해관계와 결합하며 논쟁이 된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 무상급식 정책결정과정에서의 정책행위자들, 즉 진보와 보수는 자신들의 논리를 정당화하기 위한 다양한 행동전략을 구사했으며 이 과정에서 정책담론이 중심적인 역할을 하였다. 셋째, 서울시 무상급식에 관한 정책결정은 정책행위자들의 이해와 타협에 의한 결정이라기보다는 담론투쟁에 의한 결과라 할 수 있다.

이 논문의 목적은 수업컨설팅에 관한 학문적․실제적 관심이 높아지고 있는 현 시점에서 수업컨설팅의 개념과 위상을 이론적 측면에서 검토하여, 그것의 이론적 완결성과 실천적 가치를 높이는 데에 있다. 연구 목적 달성을 위하여 수업컨설팅에서 지향하는 교사 및 수업의 상(像), 좋은 수업의 조건 등을 바탕으로 수업컨설팅의 개념을 재정리하였다. 그리고 수업과 관련된 주요 활동(수업분석, 수업비평, 수업장학)과 수업컨설팅을 비교하여 수업컨설팅의 속성을 보다 분명히 하였다. 비교의 기준으로는 해당 활동의 목적, 주요 관련자, 주요 산출물, 원리, 방법 및 기법, 활동 결과의 공유 여부, 참여의 강제성, 절차 등이 활용되었다. 수업컨설팅의 개념과 위상에 관한 논의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수업컨설팅은 “수업 관련 의뢰 과제를 해결하고 의뢰인의 수업을 개선하기 위하여, 전문성을 갖춘 교내외 전문가들이 교원을 중심으로 한 학교 구성원의 요청에 따라 제공하는 독립적인 자문 활동”이되, “학생의 참여와 배움을 핵심으로 하여, 수업의 기획, 의사소통, 상호작용 등을 기술적․예술적 요소로 나누어 분석․이해하고, 의뢰 과제를 해결하기 위한 과업을 학교컨설팅의 원리와 방법에 따라 수행”하는 활동으로 정의하였다. 둘째, 수업컨설팅과 여타 활동은 활동 목적, 주요 관련자의 특성 및 영향력, 활동 결과의 공유, 참여의 강제성, 모(母)개념의 성격 등에서 두드러진 차이를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 논의는 교사의 수업 개선 및 전문성 개발 기제로서 수업컨설팅이 가지는 가능성을 재확인하는 바탕이 될 것이다.

The aim of this study is to evaluate satisfaction with critical pathway (CP) in nursing gastric cancer patients. From January to June 2008, non critical pathway group (NCPG, n=28) is used by general doctor’s order. However, from July to December 2008, critical pathway group (CPG, n=25) received the CP schedule applied by the PA on the pre operative day. The collected data were analyzed by chi-square, and student t-test using the SPSS/Win 12.0 program. Patient’s satisfaction increased with understanding of disease and treatment process, explanation of related study and treatment, education regarding activity status, and degree of confidence in doctor. Patient satisfaction was higher in the CPG than in the NCPG.

This study aims to investigate the politics of inclusion and exclusion embedded in South Korea’s multicultural education documents. The study examines eight multicultural education policy documents published annually from 2006 to 2013; it focuses on what strategies the government chooses to acculturate multicultural families and students. As a methodology for analyzing text, this study applies critical discourse analysis (CDA). It is capable of highlighting the (un)avoidable result of the process of abjection between Korea’s majority and the minority-a bifurcation depicted in Korean society and evidenced in governmental policy documents. Thus, this paper explores how multicultural education policy documents articulate the politics of inclusion/exclusion. An integration strategy is indeed signaled in the basic idea of multicultural education. Throughout the governmental policy documents, however, practical plans and programs are deeply engaged with the assimilation and/or the segregation strategy. Based on an apparent conflict between generalities and particulars, this study proposes a hopeful vision for a South Korean multicultural education policy.

This paper attempts to trace T. S. Eliot’s thoughts on Lancelot Andrewes. Readers have thought little of Andrewes’s fame until Eliot wrote on him, thinking of him as only a prominent writer or preacher. But surprisingly Eliot in “Andrewes” compares Andrewes’s writing method with Donne’s. The paper suggests many ways Andrewes influenced Eliot. Eliot attributes to Andrewes’s writings three qualities ―1) ordonnance or arrangement and structure, 2) precision in the use of words, 3) relevant intensity.Eliot says that Dante in his Divine Comedy succeeds in harmonizing intelligence with emotion properly. Similarly, Eliot holds that the internal structures correspond to the external ones in Andrewes’s sermons. We can see influences from Andrewes’s sermons in Eliot’s “Gerontion” and Ash-Wednesday. Especially Eliot emphasizes that Andrews uses the phrases easy to remember. Eliot views Donne as continuously seeking for objects suitable for his emotions, and Andrewes as after the ones to express his self, not his own self. Thus Eliot finds Andrewes “wholly absorbed in the object.”

최근 다중검출기 CT의 보편화 된 사용으로 환자의 피폭선량이 증가하고 있다. 따라서 광자극발광선량계를 이용해 촬영 목적 부위와 주변 결정장기에 대한 환자의 피폭선량을 측정하고 그에 따른 생물학적 효과를 예측하여 저감화 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. ICRP에서 권고한 표준안을 대상으로 만들어진 인체 모형 표준 팬텀에 교정상수를 부여받은 OSD 선량계를 측정하고자 하는 좌·우 수정체, 갑상선, 촬영의 중심점, 생식선에 부착하여 각 검사 부위별 노출 조건과동일한 상태에서 환자의 피폭 선량을 모사하였다. OSL 선량계의 평균 교정상수는 1.0058±0.0074이었으며 검사 부위별 주변 결정장기의 등가선량은 좌·우측 수정체의 경우 직접 피폭이 약 50mGy로 최대였으며 간접 피폭되는 경우 0.24mGy, 원거리에서는 0.005mGy미만의 기준 준위 이하로 측정되었다. 갑상선의 경우 두부 검사에서 10.89mGy로최대였으며 흉부에서 7.75mGy, 복부 및 요추부, 골반부에서는 기준 미만이었다. 생식선의 경우 골반검사에서 21.98mGy로 최대였으며 간접 피폭되는 검사에서 기준 준위 미만에서 6.92mGy까지 피폭되었다. CT 검사에서 DRL에대한 저감화 방법은 국제기구에서 권고하고 있는 방사선 방어 원칙에 대한 정당한 해석과 제도적 뒷받침이 필요하다.따라서 환자의 피폭을 최소화하기 위해서는 정당성을 충족하여야 하며 환자의 피폭선량에 미치는 영향들을 체계화하고 조직의 불필요한 피폭을 최소화 하여야 한다.

본고는 다문화교육에 있어서 형평성과 수월성의 문제를 어떻게 볼 것인가에 대한 시론적 논의로써, 교육 전반의 형평성과 수월성 문제에 대한 비판적 논의를 포함한 장과 이를 바탕으로 다문화교육의 형평성과 수월성을 어떻게 이해할 것인가에 대한 논의를 포함한 장으로 이루어져 있다. 첫 장에서는 교육 전반에 있어서 형평성과 수월성에 관한 우리 사회의 대표적 담론들에 대한 비판적인 논의에서 시작하여, 미국의 형평성 대 수월성 논쟁의 역사적 변천을 짚어봄으로써, 형평성과 수월성의 개념에 대한 재인식이 필요함을 역설하였다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 다음 장에서는 다문화교육의 취지와 목표에 비추어 볼 때 다문화교육에서는 형평성이 우선적으로 보장되어야 함과, 다문화교육의 형평성의 개념 지평이 무엇인지를 논의하였다. 마지막으로 이러한 다문화교육의 형평성과 더불어 다문화교육의 수월성에 대한 올바른 이해와 그 추진방향에 대해 논의하였다. 앞으로 다문화교육으로의 전환이 불가피한 우리나라의 교육현실을 놓고 보았을 때, 본고의 논의는 교육의 형평성과 수월성 문제에 대한 근본적 이해와 더불어 다문화교육에 있어서의 형평성과 수월성의 문제를 올바로 인식하는데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

In this study, a reduction in inter-laminar shear strength of FRP reinforcing bars, which is domestically produced, subjected to high temperatures was investigated. The inter-laminar shear tests were conducted on the rebar specimens conditioned in a chamber for specified times at high temperatures. The exposure temperatures were 100℃∼300℃, The exposure time were 0.5 hours to 4 hours. It was found that the critical temperature was for both GFRP and CFRP reinforcing bars, 270℃. Based on the results, a linear equation for evaluation of the effect of exposure time is proposed.

Egr1(－/－) female mice are infertile due to anovulation resulting from luteinizing hormone β subunit (LHβ) deficiency. While it is clear that Egr1 is a critical factor to regulate transcription of LHβ in the pituitary gland, function of Egr1 and mechanisms by which estrogen (E2) and/or progesterone (P4) regulates Egr1 in uterus still remain unexplored. Using multiple approaches, here we have characterized regulatory mechanism of Egr1 induction in the uterus and uterine phenotypes of Egr1(－/－) mice. Eight-week-old female mice were ovariectomized (OVX) and rested for a week. Uteri of OVX mice treated with various concentrations of E2 and/or other hormones were collected at 2h after hormone treatment unless otherwise indicated. Collected uteri were utilized for mRNA microarrays, realtime-RT-PCR, Western blotting, and histological analyses for immunofluorescence and BrdU staining. Egr1 mRNA was rapidly induced with the highest level at 2h after E2 treatment and gradually decreased to basal levels at 12 h. E2-induced phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and AKT, and Egr1 transcription were effectively inhibited by pretreatment of ICI 182,780. Pharmacological inhibition of ERK1/2, but not AKT significantly blocked E2-induced Egr1 expression in the uterus. P4 effectively dampened E2-dependent Egr1 transcription and its antagonistic effects were partially interfered with RU486 pretreatment. Interestingly, BrdU incorporation experiments provided evidence that epithelial cells undergo hyperproliferation in Egr1(－/－) mice. This is consistent with microarray data that several key factors for cell cycle progression such as cyclin Ds and E2F1 are overexpressed in these mice. Furthermore, in the uteri of OVX Egr1(－/－) mice treated with E2+P4, stromal cell proliferation is severely impaired and epithelial cells persistently proliferating. While ovulation, fertilization and embryo development normally occur in Egr1(－/－) mice treated with a superovulation regime to rescue LH deficiency, embryo implantation is severely impaired. Blastocysts were not able to implant even on day 6 of pregnancy in Egr1(－/－) mice. In addition to embryo implantation, uterine response to artificial decidualization in hormone-primed Egr1(－/－) OVX mice was relatively less than that of wildtype mice. Collectively, our results show that Egr1, which is rapidly induced by E2-ER-ERK1/2 pathways, is a critical factor to control E2-dependent cell proliferation via regulation of a spectrum of genes for embryo implantation in the uterus.

The purpose of this study was to investigate yield rate of carbon fibers reinforced epoxy composites in near-critical water. A CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) laminate stacked with twenty layers was used and the specimens were cut in 10 × 50 mm (thickness: 4 mm) size. The CFRP sample was placed and heated within the non-stirred bath autoclave with an electric furnace. The yield percentage is calculated by the weight percentage of eliminated resin. To check the surface of carbon fiber, scanning electron microscopy was employed. The results showed that the removal percentages of weight were between 53.9% and 97.1%. The best yield was significantly increased up to 97.1% when operating in 573 K (14 MPa) condition. This research suggests an basic data to design a commercial scale recycling system or a new low cost recycling system for CFRP waste.

In his essay “Hamlet and His Problems”(1919), Eliot analyses Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and evaluates Macbeth, Coriolanus, and Antony and Cleopatra favorably. To Eliot, Hamlet is not as good as Macbeth, because it has no objective correlatives. Macbeth is the work, in which he can find suitable correlatives. Unlike Hamlet, Coriolanus and Antony and Cleopatra seem to him to be an artistic success. This article investigates Eliot’s evaluation of Antony and Cleopatra based on his objective correlative theory. Eliot claims that an author’s emotions should not be in his works, and that instead he should present them objectively. Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra is the best example of this theory, by way of Shakespeare’s various literary conventions, such as paradox, overtone, image, symbol, etc.

최근 들어 빅데이터(Big Data)가 경제, 사회적으로 주목을 받고 있다. 지난 10여 년간 IT 기술의 발전, 인터넷의 대중화, 데이터 분석 기술의 발전이 눈에 띄게 이루어져 엄청난 데이터가 생성되었다. 특히 스마트 폰을 비롯한 모바일 기기가 광범위하게 보급되고 소셜 미디어 (Social Media)의 사용이 급속도로 늘면서 개인정보부터 정치, 환경에 이르기까지 폭넓은 데이터의 수집이 가능해졌다. 과거에는 특정 용량 이상이나 기존 데이터베이스로 처리가 불가능한 규모의 데이터를 칭했고, 대용량 데이터를 다루는 일부 소수 전문가나 기업의 기술적 이슈에 불과했으나, 이제는 경제, 경영, 사회의 각 영역에서 필수 자산으로 인식되고 있다. 특히 빅데이터가 가진 잠재가치는 다양한 산업의 글로벌 기업들이 경쟁우위를 확보하고자 앞 다투어 투자를 할 정도로 크며 사회 문화적 파급효과의 측면에서도 중요한 주제가 되고 있다. 본 연구는 빅데이터가 가질 수 있는 핵심적인 맥락을 살펴보고, 그에 기초하여 빅데이터가 내포하는 여러 다양한 가능성과 함의들을 짚어보고자 한다.

Considering the probabilistic distribution of fibers in amorphous steel fiber reinforced concrete(ASFRC), the number of amorphous steel fibers crossing the critical section were theoretically derived as a function of fiber geometry, specimen dimensions and fiber volume fraction. The developed theoretical expressions reasonably predicted the number of amorphous steel fibers at different sections.

산지하천의 자갈하상재료 분포는 최근 특정규모 홍수의 수류력에 의한 유사 이송 및 퇴적 과정에 의해 형성되며, 장갑화된 하천에서 한계수류력을 평가하는 것은 안정하도설계를 위해 중요하다. 자갈하상 하천 종단지점과 만곡부 일정구간의 세부지점에 대한 하상재료의 입도 분포를 조사하고, 한계유속 및 한계수류력을 평가하였다. 자갈하상 재료에 대한 Yang의 한계단위수류력과 Bagnold의 한계수류력은 상류로 갈수록 급격히 증가했다. 계획홍수량에 근거한 무차원 전단응력은 Shields 도표에서 대부분 조사지점의 자갈하상재료가 소류사 형태로 이동하는 것으로 평가되었다. 만곡부에 대한 평균입경은 상류 유입수의 1차 수충지점에서 가장 컸으며, 반사흐름에 의한 2차 수충지점에서 두 번째로 큰 입경을 보였다. 수충 직하류 지점들에서 상대적으로 작은 평균입경을 보였다. 만곡부의 평균한계유속 범위는 0.77∼2.60m/s의 범위이며, 한계단위수류력은 경사가 급한 1차 수충부에서는 상당히 컸다. 한계수류력의 분포는 7∼171W/m2의 범위로 하천 횡단보다는 종단에 따른 변화가 뚜렷했고, 만곡 외측 1차 수충지점과 반사흐름 2차 수충지점에서 크게 작용하는 것으로 평가되었다.

최근 기후변화에 따른 집중호우로 수재해의 빈도 및 피해 증가와 같은 양상이 나타나고 있다. 특히, 동일한 국지지역 내에서 반복적인 집중호우에 의한 돌발홍수로 중소하천유역에 많은 인명과 재산피해를 초래하고 있다. 이와 같이 기후변화로 인한 집중호우 크기나 횟수의 증가로 인한 중소하천유역의 홍수 피해는 비록 경제적으로는 대하천 홍수의 복합적 피해에 비해 작을 수 있으나, 중소하천 유역에서의 홍수 특성이 짧은 시간에 특히 많은 인명피해를 발생시킨다는 점에서 대하천 홍수예·경보와 연계 혹은 별도의 적절한 중소하천 홍수예측 모형과 예·경보시스템 구축이 요구되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 낙동강수계내 중소하천 홍수예·경보시스템 구축을 위해 시험유역을 선정하고 기법의 적용성과 타당성을 검토하고자 하였다. 낙동강수계 22개 단위유역에 대해 Hec-GeoHMS를 이용하여 임계면적 3.0km2을 기준으로 약 4,000여개의 소유역 및 하도를 구분하고 경보단계별 한계수심에 해당하는 위험유량을 산정후 Hec-HMS를 이용하여 지속시간별 강우량-첨두유량 관계 곡선을 작성하였다. 지속시간 20분에 대한 평균 한계유출량은 경계 3.20mm, 대피1 3.79mm, 대피2 4.47mm를 나타내고 있으면 평균 기준강우량은 경계 17.31mm, 대피1 19.12mm, 대피2 21.01mm를 가지는 것으로 나타났으며 본 연구에서 산정한 기준강우량은 낙동강수계의 수문학적 거동을 적절히 반영하는 것으로 검토되었다.

This essay examines the seventeenth century New England Congregationalists’ doctrine of the “church covenant” and its relationship with the “half-way covenant.” According to Perry Miller, there is a radical discontinuity between them. Miller points out three major differences. First, the half-way covenant introduced a new internal/external distinction into the early fathers’ church covenant, while the latter had considered their church covenant as a visible form of the internal covenant of grace. Second, accordingly, the defenders of the half-way covenant “drastically separated” the church covenant from the covenant of grace. As a result, the church covenant was “no longer viewed as a direct manifestation of spiritual conversion.” Third, there was a generation gap: While the old generation opposed the principle of the half-way covenant, the young generation tended to defend it. Miller shared the early seventeenth century critics’ view of the church covenant--as shown in Samuel Rutherford's polemical works against New England Congregationalism. Rutherford, for example, tended to identify Thomas Hooker’s concept of the church covenant with the Separatists’ view of it which was deeply rooted in their “pure church” ecclesiology. Both Rutherford’s and Miller’s thesis, however, represent a one-sided view. Hooker and his brethren present enough counter-evidence to show that the principle of the half-way covenant should be compatible with the early doctrine of the church covenant: First, the internal/external distinction does not belong to a later development because it was a basic feature for Hooker’s doctrine of the church covenant. Hooker clearly sees his church covenant as an external--not internal--covenant. Second, Hooker and his brethren make a significant distinction between the invisible/inward covenant of grace and the visible/outward covenant of grace. The latter, Hooker argues, is given for the visible church--either an explicit or an implicit form of church covenant. Third, Hooker’s church covenant does not nullify the traditional distinction of the visible/invisible church. On the contrary, it must preserve it. Finally, unlike Miller’s thought, the majority of the early Congregationalists--even in the 1630s--actually favored the principle of the half-way covenant. The above facts must account for the reason why the defenders of the half-way covenant could claim that they had the fathers of Congregationalism (including Hooker) on their side. In short, the complex reality demands that we should seek a more balanced approach to the issue of continuity/discontinuity between the church covenant and the half-way covenant.
