In the current steel structures of high-rise buildings, high heat input welding techniques are used to improve productivity in the construction industry. Under the high heat input welding, however, the microstructures of the weld metal (WM) and heat-affected zone (HAZ) coarsen, resulting in the deterioration of impact toughness. This study focuses mainly on the effects of fine TiN precipitates dispersed in steel plates and B addition in welding materials on grain refinement of the HAZ microstructure under submerged arc welding (SAW) with a high heat input of 200 kJ/cm. The study reveals that, different from that in conventional steel, the γ grain coarsening is notably retarded in the coarse grain HAZ (CGHAZ) of a newly developed steel with TiN precipitates below 70 nm in size even under the high heat input welding, and the refinement of HAZ microstructure is confirmed to have improved impact toughness. Furthermore, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) analyses demonstrate that B is was identified at the interface of TiN in CGHAZ. It is likely that B atoms in the WM are diffused to CGHAZ and are segregated at the outer part of undissolved TiN, which contributes partly to a further grain refinement, and consequently, improved mechanical properties are achieved.

In this study, the mechanical characteristics with micro structure were analyzed on the butt joint of AZ60 magnesium material extruded by GMAW and GTAW processes. As the result of tensile test, the fracture in the welding joint area happened at both processes and seemed to be brittle fracture. The yield strength of GMAW was 84.29% and GTAW was 60.43% as compared with base metal. The yield strength of GMAW was higher 23.86% than that of GTAW. The result of decreased micro hardness was indicated at both processes. The value of minimum micro hardness in FZ at GMAW was Hv 46.7 and GTAW was Hv 43.6 as compared with base metal. The value of minimum micro hardness at GMAW process was higher 5.64 % than that at GTAW process. The size of grain boundary at GMAW process in HAZ is smaller than that at GTAW process. GMAW process is more superior than GTAW process from the productivity and quality in case of automatic welding for magnesium alloy such as the automobile seat frame.

Two steel-frame joint specimens with welding joint parts were constructed and evaluated. Two types of displacement load, monotonic and cyclic, were used to evaluate the steel-frame joint specimens. According to the experimental results, the maximum moment of the cyclic test results was 80% smaller than that of the monotonic test results. Local buckling was observed in the compression area of the H-beam flange. A finite element analysis model based on the experimental results was proposed to analyze the steel-frame joint specimens. The numerical results predicted the experimental behavior of the steel-frame joint specimens well. Therefore, it is possible to use the proposed finite element analysis model to evaluate middle- and low-rise steel-frame buildings constructed in South Korea.

There is a growing demand for improving the welding quality by reducing the machining error and improving the quality of the machined surface in the beveling for the improvement of the welding groove of the thick plate. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop an automatic beveling machine that adopts a cutting method that replaces the conventional oxygen flame cutting method. In this study, the cutting characteristics according to the machining conditions were evaluated during the face milling applied to the thick plate welding groove. We measured and evaluated cutting force for the machining conditions such as cutting depth, feed rate, chamfer angle, workpiece material, and material of the tool. We expect that this study is used as basic data for designing the stiffness of the spindle, the strength of the fixture and the power of the spindle and the feeding device when designing the automatic beveling machine.

Evaluations of the microstructure and mechanical properties of age hardenable Cu-2.0wt%Be alloy are performed in order to determine whether it can be used as a welding electrode for projection welding. The microstructure examinations, hardness measurements, and tensile tests of selective aging conditions are conducted. The results indicate that the aging treatment with the fine-grained microstructure exhibits better hardness and high tensile properties than those of the coarsegrained microstructure. The highest hardness value and high tensile strength are obtained from the aged condition of 300 oC for 360 min due to the presence of the metastable γ. precipitates on the grain boundaries. The values of the highest hardness and tensile strength are measured as 374 Hv and 1236.2 MPa, respectively. The metastable γ. precipitates are transferred to the equilibrium γ precipitates due to the over-aged treatment. The presence of the γ precipitates appears as nodule-like precipitates decorated around the grain boundaries. The welding electrode with the best aging treated condition exhibits better welding performance for electrodes than those of electrodes used previously.

To precisely assemble the fuel test rod, an orbital TIG welding system was designed and developed to accurately conduct orbital TIG welding for the nuclear fuel test rod. Using this system, a welding process needs to confirm the welding properties for orbital TIG welding. Therefore, preliminary weld tests were performed on the cladding tubes under various conditions, and the results show that the width and depth of HAZ of the cladding specimen welded using identical power during an orbital TIG welding cycle was continuously increased from a welded start-point to a welded end-point because of heat accumulation. The performance tests were conducted under the welding conditions considered through preliminary welding tests, and the properties of the specimens were conformed through surface and microstructure analyses.

The characteristics of temperature variation for laser diode welding system have been analyzed with numerical investigation. The laser diode is assembled with a cap and stem by projection welding. Resistance heat, in this process, is generated by electric current at the contact surface between cap and stem within a very short time. Temperature variation of laser diode is largely affected by the welding time and the heat generated from the surface. Maximum temperature of each component in the laser diode should be lower than the melting point except for cap and stem in order to prevent welding defect. Temperature distribution of each component in the laser diode is also affected by thermal conduction mechanism. Welding defect near the insulator occurs when the resistance heat is high. Appropriate resistance heat supply to the laser diode was about 400W. The results from this study could be applicable for optimal design of laser diode welding system.

In this study, the cold rolled DP590 FSW joints were obtained by the position control type of the FSW machine and examined. The FSW weldability was investigated using the Si3N4 tool specially made by Cold Isostatic Press (CIP). Defect-free joints were formed at 180-300 mm/min at 800 rpm. However, a groove-like defect was observed along the joint line of the advancing side due to the insufficient material flow. In addition, the life of the Si3N4 tool was compared to that of the polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tool for the durability. The SI3N4 tool that was broken in which tool reached a length of 5 m and around half of the performance level of the PCBN tool.
