        Background : Undulatum Rhubarb, commonly produced in domestic, is rhizome of Rheum undulatum L. that belongs to the family Polygonaceae. It also can be used as a substitute of R. palmatum L., R. tanguticum Maximowicz ex Balf., and R. officinale Baillon which completely depend on import system. However, there should be clear clarification among Undulatum Rhubarb and Rhubarb, because Undulatum Rhubarb contains rhaponticin as marker compound that is not indicated at Rhubarb. Some of the recently imported Undulatum Rhubarbs have been found to be Rhubarb. Also, it is known that only Undulatum Rhubarb is cultivated at domestic environment. But some plant origins of Rhubarb are grown in Korea, too. Further study are needed to clarify clear origin between Undulatum Rhubarb and Rhubarb. Thus, we collected some domestically cultivated samples and identified them. Methods and Reseults : Rheum undulatum L., Rhubarb, Rheum tanguticum Maximowicz ex Balf. which were cultivated in Gangwondo Agricultural Research and Extension Services in Cheorwon were collected and anayzed the DNA sequences. We also compared DNA sequences in Rhubarb collected from England and R. rhabarbarum L., R. undulatum L., and R. franzenbachii on NCBI. As a result, two kinds of rhubarb cultivated in the test plantation were identified as R. rhabarbarum and R. officinale. In addition, R. undulatum (plant origin of Undulatum Rhubarb) was identified as Rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum) in England with 99 - 100% identical in nuclear ITS gene region. Conclusion : R. undulatum, plant origin of Undulatum Rhubarb, is reported as synonym of R. rhabarbarum, R. franzenbachii. Rheum speices which are cultivated as tester in Gangwondo Agricultural Research and Extension Services in Cheorwon are estimated as R. undulatum and R. officinale. Therefore, not only Undulatum Rhubarb but Rhubarb could be grown in Korea.

        To understand the characteristics of vanadium leaching from soils formed by the weathering of basalts, paleo soil at Gosan, Jeju Island, Korea, and several present-day soils from neighboring areas were collected. Leaching experiments were carried out by two approaches: 1) batch experiments under various geochemical conditions (redox potential (Eh) and pH) and 2) continuous leaching experiments under conditions similar to those of natural environments. From the batch experiments, leached vanadium concentrations were highest under alkaline (NaOH) conditions, with a maximum value of 2,870 μg/L, and were meaningful (maximum value, 114 μg/L) under oxidizing (H2O2) conditions, whereas concentrations under other conditions (acidic-HCl, neutral-NaHCO3, and reducing-Na2S2O3) were negligible. This indicated that the geochemical conditions, in which soil-water reactions occurred to form groundwater with high vanadium concentrations, were under alkaline-oxidizing conditions. From the continuous leaching experiments, the pH and leached vanadium concentrations of the solution were in the ranges of 5.45 5.58 and 6 9 μg/L, respectively, under CO2 supersaturation conditions for the first 15 days, whereas values under O2 aeration conditions after the next 15 days increased to 8.48 8.62 and 9.7 12.2 μg/L, respectively. Vanadium concentrations from the latter continuous leaching experiments were similar to the average concentration of groundwater in Jeju Island (11.2 μg/L). Furthermore leached vanadium concentrations in continuous leaching experiments were highly correlated with pH and Al, Cr, Fe, Mn and Zn concentrations. The results of this study showed that 1) alkaline-oxidizing conditions of water-rock (soil) interactions were essential to form vanadium-rich groundwater and 2) volcanic soils can be a potential source of vanadium in Jeju Island groundwater.

        Background : Gentinae Macrophyllae Radix is one of the traditional medicines originated from the roots of multiple plants, Gentiana macrophylla Pall., Gentiana straminea Maxim., Gentiana crassicaulis Duthie ex Burkill and Gentiana dahurica Fisch., in Gentianaceae. Multi-origin traditional medicine usually has adulteration problem based on the morphological similarity and/or misunderstanding the species. Therefore, accurate and reliable identification criteria to ensure drug safety and quality is necessary. Methods and Results : We collected four original species of Gentinae Macrophyllae Radix from plantations and markets in China and Korea. DNA barcoding with four barcoding markers (Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS), rbcL, trnL intron, trnL-F intergenic sapcer) was performed. Intra-specific variation was observed in ITS nucleotide sequence however, successfully distinct four original species based on the nucleotide discrepancy while trnL intron has no difference. trnL-F intergenic spacer has two transitions(T→C and A→G) sites only in G. crassicaulis and rbcL shows one transition(C→T) site in G. dahurica and G. macrophylla. Phylogenetic relationship analysis of the Gentinae Macrophyllae Radix revealed two major clades – clade I including three groups, G. macrophylla, G. straminea and G. dahurica, and clade II including G. crassicaulis. This aspects was shown more clear with multi-region combined analysis. Conclusion : DNA barcoding will be accurate and powerful criteria for the analysis the origin of Gentinae Macrophyllae Radix. However, single region analysis might be deficient such as trnL intron, rbcL and trnL-F intergenic spacer results in this research. Multi-region combined analysis based on the multiregional DNA barcode markers will be overcome the disadvantage and also increase the precision.

        Eliot and Valrie’ ashes are interred in the church, with the inscription, “In my end is my beginning.” After three hundreds years Eliot returned to the home of his forefather, Andrew Eliot, who left East Coker for the Massachusetts Bay Colony of America in 1660. Eliot received the Christian sacraments of baptism and confirmation in Holy Trinity Church at Finstock on the 29th and 30th June, 1927 that belongs to the Church of England. He was made a member of the Holy Catholic Church that belongs to Anglo-Catholicism. Eliot has a doubting belief and finally became an Anglo-Catholic who believes in the doctrines such as Incarnation and Holy Trinity that differ from that of Unitarianism inherited from his family. His conversion was the result of a lifetime skepticism and progression accepting confession, pray, and contemplation for practice not a leap of faith. Eliot underwent a kind of gradual dialectic of reasons for his adopting ideological position throughout one’s earthly pilgrimage. At last Eliot found a historic and religious community of an Anglo-Catholic in East Coker to have certain admiration for the religious belief, for the life of prayer and contemplation, and for those who attempt to practise it.

        대한민국 등대의 역사는 일제가 국외 침략을 목적으로 한반도에 설치한 것에서 시작되었다고 알려져 있다. 이러한 주장에 따르면 1903년 인천에 처음으로 등대가 설치된 이래 일제 강점기를 거치면서 근대적인 항로표지시스템이 구성되었다는 것이다. 그러나 이 점에 대해 서는 좀 더 신중하게 고려할 필요가 있다. 국제 항구의 도시로서 그리고 초량왜관의 도시로서 부산은 15세기 초 이래로 한일 외교관계의 중심 지였다. 그렇기 때문에 이미 오래전부터 부산에는 해상 국제교류를 위한 항만시설이 발달되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금까지 해양에 관련된 역사자료가 부족하고 기초연구가 미비하여 올바른 역사를 정립하는 것이 어려운 실정이었다. 최근 들어서 부산해관 고문서의 번역이 마무리 되었고, 초량왜관 관련 고지도들을 집성한 자료가 편찬되면서 보다 객관적인 부산의 역사를 정립할 수 있게 되었다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문 은 고지도와 문서들을 통하여 오래된 국제 항구도시 부산의 초량항에 초점을 두고 부산 항로표지의 기원에 관하여 고찰하고자 한다.

        황해 남동 이질대에서 채취된 51개의 표층퇴적물 시료와 황해로 유입되는 한국과 중국의 하천퇴적물 시료 33개에 대해서 반정량 X선회절분석법을 통한 점토광물의 상대적인 함량을 토대로 주성분분석을 도입하여 해양표층퇴적물의 기원지를 연구하였다. 전체 자료의 98% 이상을 반영하는 제1주 성분과 제2주성분을 이용하여 R 프로그램을 통해 주성분분석을 수행하였다. 황해 남동 이질대 퇴적물의 점토광물 함량은 남부 지역과 북부 지역에서 거의 차이가 나지 않으며, 성분도표상에서의 해양퇴적물 분포는 중국의 황하, 양쯔강 퇴적물보다 한국의 하천퇴적물과 더욱 근접한 양상을 보였다. 이러한 통계적 분석 결과를 바탕으로 황해 남동 이질대는 거의 모두가 한국 하천퇴적물로부터 유래했다는 것을 추정할 수 있다. 또한, 황해 남동 이질대에 한국 하천에서 유출되는 양보다 더 많은 퇴적물이 축적된 이유로는 퇴적물의 침식과 재동에 의한 것으로 판단된다. 주성분분석은 한반도 주변 해역 퇴적물의 기원지 연구에 유용하게 사용될 것으로 기대된다.

        Total organic carbon(TOC), Total nitrogen(TN), and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were measured in the sediment and suspended parties in fresh lake water and saline estuarine water to determine the sources of Particulate organic matter(POM) in the sediments of the Youngsan river estuary. POM in the freshwater discharge water was mostly phytoplankton origin with little trace of terrestrial plants. POM from phytoplankton blooms formed in estuarine water in response to the nutrient enriched freshwater discharges was the most important sources of POM in the sediment near the dike, comprising more than 40% of the total organic matter. POM from freshwater phytoplankton and oceanic phytoplankton were also important sources of the sediment POM, and their contributions varied with the distances from the dike. Contribution of freshwater phytoplankton to sediment POM decreased from the dike to the outside of the estuary.

        제주 남서 이질대에서 채취된 138개의 해양표층퇴적물 시료와 황하와 양쯔강 하천퇴적물 시료에 대하여 반정량 X선회절분석법에 의한 점토광물 상대조성을 바탕으로 주성분분석을 이용하여 퇴적물의 기원지를 연구하였다. 제1주성분과 제2주성분이 전체 자료의 90% 이상을 설명하기 때문에 두 주성분만을 가지고 R프로그램을 이용하여 주성분분석을 실시하였다. 제주 남서 이질대 내 각각의 점토광물의 분포양상은 매우 복잡하지만, 전체적인 분포양상을 고려할 때, 스멕타이트와 카올리나이트는 서부지역에서 높은 함량을 보였고 일라이트와 녹니석은 동부지역에서 상대적으로 높은 값을 나타냈다. 제주 남서 이질대의 동부지역에서 보여주는 상대적으로 높은 일라이트와 녹니석 함량은 양쯔강 퇴적물과, 서부지역에서의 높은 스멕타이트와 카올리나이트 함량은 황하 퇴적물과 더 유사한 양상을 나타낸다. 이러한 통계 처리 결과를 바탕으로 제주 남서 이질대의 동부지역은 양쯔강에서 유래하였고 서부지역은 황하로부터 기원했음을 추정할 수 있다. 추후 퇴적물 기원지 연구에 주성분분석이 유용하게 활용될 것으로 기대한다.

        Collected germplasms of five representative dandelion species (Taraxacum ohwianum, T. platycarpum, T. platypecidum, T. officinale, and T. coreanum) were 104 lines from different habitates in Korea and China. Their genetic diversity was analyzed by genomic fingerprinting method using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). AFLP results of 6 primer combinations were revealed 1,176 total DNA fragments and 523 polymorphic bands with a 44.4% ratio of polymorphism. On the basis of similarity coefficient analysis by unweight pair group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA), 104 dandelion germplasm lines were ranged from 0.64 to 0.99 and clustered distinct five group depending on the species. Furthermore, a principal coordinate analysis (PCA) by the application of multi-variate analysis indicated significantly greater differences among species than geographical origins.

        Ground seawater quality was investigated, and the algal growth potential (AGP) tests were performed along the Tongyeong coast to examine the inflow of materials, which is needed for the red tide species Cochlodinium polykrikoides to grow. The study was conducted to determine the mechanism for C. polykrikoidesred tides. Water temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged from 16.05 to 20.74°C, 18.20 to 32.11 psu, 6.00 to 7.61, and 3.41 to 7.91 mg/L (41.4– 96.1%), respectively. No seasonal variation was observed in water temperature. The salinity, pH, and DO saturations at most stations were lower than those of coastal seawater at Tongyeong. The NH4 +-N, NO2+3 --N, PO4 3--P concentrations ranged from 0.43 to 16.00μM, 1.50 to 132.38μM, and 1.30 to 6.29μM, respectively; the values at some stations were much higher than observed in Tongyeong coast seawater. Using seawater from station B, C. polykrikoides grew consistently, with a high growth rate, similar to the red tide in nature. This seawater appeared to contain materials needed by C. polykrikoides to grow. Therefore, C. polykrikoides red tides seem to occur wherever the ground sea water contains materials that are needed for its growth.
