In this paper, a dynamic centrifuge model test was conducted on a 24.8-meter-deep excavation consisting of a 20 m sand layer and 4.8 m bedrock, classified as S3 by Korean seismic design code KDS 17 10 00. A braced excavation wall supports the hole. From the results, the mechanism of seismically induced earth pressure was investigated, and their distribution and loading points were analyzed. During earthquake loadings, active seismic earth pressure decreases from the at-rest earth pressure since the backfill laterally expands at the movement of the wall toward the active direction. Yet, the passive seismic earth pressure increases from the at-rest earth pressure since the backfill pushes to the wall and laterally compresses at it, moving toward a passive direction and returning to the initial position. The seismic earth pressure distribution shows a half-diamond distribution in the dense sand and a uniform distribution in loose sand. The loading point of dynamic thrust corresponding with seismic earth pressure is at the center of the soil backfill. The dynamic thrust increased differently depending on the backfill's relative density and input motion type. Still, in general, the dynamic thrust increased rapidly when the maximum horizontal displacement of the wall exceeded 0.05 H%.

In this study, centrifuge model tests were performed to evaluate the seismic response of multi-DOF structures with shallow foundations. Also, elastic time history analysis on the fixed-base model was performed and compared with the experimental results. As a result of the centrifuge model test, earthquake amplification at the fundamental vibration frequency of the soil (= 2.44 Hz) affected the third vibration mode frequency (= 2.50 Hz) of the long-period structure and the first vibration mode (= 2.27 Hz) of the short-period structure. The shallow foundation lengthened the periods of the structures by 14-20% compared to the fixed base condition. The response spectrum of acceleration measured at the shallow foundation was smaller than that of free-field motion due to the foundation damping effect. The ultimate moment capacity of the soil-foundation system limited the dynamic responses of the multi-DOF structures. Therefore, the considerations on period lengthening, foundation damping, and ultimate moment capacity of the soil-foundation system might improve the seismic design of the multi-DOF building structures.
This paper investigates the stress-reducing preventive maintenance model through numerical experiments. The preventive maintenance model is used to analyze the relationship between related conditions and variables to gain insight into the efficient operation of the system when performing preventive maintenance in real-world situations. Various preventive maintenance models have been developed over the past decades and their complexity has increased in recent years. Increasing complexity is essential to reflect reality, but recent models can only be interpreted through numerical experiments. The stress-reducing preventive maintenance is a newly introduced preventive maintenance concept and can only be interpreted numerically due to its complexity, and has received little attention because the concept is unfamiliar. Therefore, for information purposes, this paper investigates the characteristics of the stress-reducing preventive maintenance and the relationship between parameters and variables through numerical experiments. In particular, this paper is focusing on the economic feasibility of stress-reducing preventive maintenance by observing changes in the optimal preventive maintenance period in response to changes in environmental stress and the improvement factor. As a result, when either the environmental stress or the improve effect of stress-reducing preventive maintenance is low, it is not necessary to carry out the stress-reducing preventive maintenance at excessive cost. In addition, it was found that the age reduction model is more economical than the failure rate reduction model.
PURPOSES : In this study, a numerical clogging model that can be used to realistically visualize the movement of particles in cylindrical permeability test equipment was proposed based on the system coupling of computational fluid dynamics with the discrete element method and experimental permeability test results. This model can also be used to simulate the interaction of dust particles with bedding particles.
METHODS: A 4-way system coupling method with multiphase volumes of the fluid model and porous media model was proposed. The proposed model needs to consider the influence of flow on the dust particles, interaction between the dust particles, and interaction between the dust particles and bedding layer particles. The permeability coefficient of the bedding layer in cylindrical permeability test equipment was not calculated by using the permeability test result, but was estimated by using the particle packing model and Ergun model.
RESULTS : The numerical simulation demonstrated a good agreement with the experimental test results in terms of permeability and drain time. Additionally, the initial movement of particles due to the sudden drain hole opening was successfully captured by the numerical model.
CONCLUSIONS : A 4-way coupling model was sufficient to simulate the water flow and particle movement in cylindrical permeability test equipment. However, additional tests and simulation are required to utilize the model for more realistic block pavement systems.
PURPOSES : In this study, a series of fundamental falling head permeability tests were conducted on a binary particle mix bedding to determine the minimum water level, bedding layer thickness, and amount of dust that can result in the stable permeability with high repeatability. The determined condition is used to develop a CFD-DEM coupled clogging model that can explain the movement of dust particles in flowing water of a block pavement system.
METHODS: A binary particle mixture is utilized to experimentally simulate an ideal bedding layer of a block pavement system. To obtain a bedding layer with maximum packing degree, the well-known particle packing degree model, i.e., the modified Toufar model, was utilized. The permeability of the bedding layer for various water levels, bedding layer thicknesses, and amounts of dust was calculated. The permeability for a small water level drop was also plotted to evaluate the effect of dust on the bedding layer clogging.
RESULTS: It was observed that a water level of 100 mm, bedding depth of 70 mm, and dust amount of 0.3 g result in a stable permeability condition with high repeatability. The relationship between the minimum dust amount and surface clogging of the bedding layer was suggested based on the evaluation of the volumetric calculation of the particle and void and the permeability change in the test.
CONCLUSIONS: The test procedure to determine the minimum water level, bedding thickness, and dust amount was successfully proposed. The mechanism of clogging on the surface of the bedding layer was examined by relating the volumetric characteristics of dust to the clogging surface.
PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to evaluate road subsidence based on model chamber tests.
METHODS : A theoretical review of road subsidence mechanisms was carried out, and a series of soil chamber tests with initial cavities were conducted under various conditions. Road subsidence risk was analyzed based on these results.
RESULTS: The cavity collapse risk was affected by multiple factors, including cavity location, traffic loading, and asphalt layer thickness. The Nf number of loading required to reach cavity collapse increased as the cavity width increased, cavity depth decreased, and asphalt layer thickness increased.
CONCLUSIONS: The effects of asphalt thickness on the risk of road subsidence was assessed to have an additional 1.5-fold effect on the subgrade thickness. This study proposed an effective cavity depth (Deff), considering the strength of the asphalt layer. Based on the results of the model chamber test, a four-class road subsidence risk model was proposed with effective cavity depths and widths. It was found that the risk of road subsidence increased as the cavity width increased and the effective cavity depth decreased. This trend is also well matched to the road subsidence risk models of Japan and Seoul.
PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to identify the mechanism of road subsidence caused by damaged water and sewer pipes.
METHODS: A series of soil chamber test using damaged water and sewer pipe models were conducted under various conditions.
RESULTS : Characteristics of cavity expansion and collapse caused by damaged pipes were affected by the damaged location in the sewer pipe, the head on the water pipe, the distance between the damaged water pipe and outlet, and relative soil density.
CONCLUSIONS: Sewer-pipe damage was considered a direct cause of road subsidence, and the cavity expanded discontinuously. When the outlet was located under the damaged water pipe, the cavity expanded in the water pipe’s direction, and collapse occurred above the pipe. However, when the outlet was located atop the damaged water pipe, the cavity expanded toward the outlet direction and resulted in a subsidence. Cavity expansion speed was affected by various conditions, such as the pipe’s water head, outlet position, distance between the damaged water pipe and outlet, and relative soil density. However, the cavity expansion shape did not affect factors, except for outlet position.

Fuel consumption in fisheries is a primary concern due to environmental effects and costs to fishermen. Much research has been carried out to reduce the fuel consumption related to fishing operations. The fuel consumption of fishing gear in fishing operation is generally related to hydrodynamic resistance on the gear. This research is to propose a low drag generated midwater trawl in terms of the gear design improvement using simulations. The results from the simulation were verified with results that mirrored the model experiments. From the results, the resistance force of the proposed gear decreased to 29% compared to that of the current gear. Furthermore, the gear performance also improved with increased gear mouth compared to the current one. Therefore, the proposed gear will be helpful to reduce the greenhouse gases from fishing operation. It will also contribute to the fishing industry by saving fuel.
Soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) is one of the important issues in the seismic design for evaluating the exact behavior of the system. A seismic design of a structure can be more precise and economical, provided that the effect of SFSI is properly taken into account. In this study, a series of the dynamic centrifuge tests were performed to compare the seismic response of the single degree of freedom(SDOF) structure on the various types of the foundation. The shallow and pile foundations were made up of diverse mass and different conjunctive condition, respectively. The test specimen consisted of dry sand deposit, foundation, and SDOF structure in a centrifuge box. Several types of earthquake motions were sequentially applied to the test specimen from weak to strong intensity of them, which is known as a stage test. Results from the centrifuge tests showed that the seismic responses of the SDOF structure on the shallow foundation and disconnected pile foundation decreased by the foundation rocking. On the other hand, those on the connected pile foundation gradually increased with intensity of input motion. The allowable displacement of the foundation under the strong earthquake, the shallow and the disconnected pile foundation, have an advantage in dissipating the earthquake energy for the seismic design.
To investigate earthquake responses of structures with basements affected by soil deposits, centrifuge tests were performed using an in-flight earthquake simulator. The test specimen was composed of a single-degree-of-freedom structure model, a basement and sub-soil deposits in a centrifuge container. The test parameters were the dynamic period of the structure model, boundary conditions of the basement, existence of soil deposits, centrifugal acceleration level, and type and level of input earthquake accelerations. When soil deposits did not exist, the earthquake responses of the structures with fixed basement were significantly greater than those of the structure without basement. Also, the earthquake responses of the structures with the fixed basement surrounded by soil deposits were amplified, but the amplifications were smaller than those of the structures without basement. The earthquake responses of the structures with the half-embedded basement in the soil deposits were greater than those estimated by the fixed base model using the measured free-field ground motion. The test showed that the basement and the soil deposit should be simultaneously considered in the numerical analysis model, and the stiffness of the half-embedded was not effective.
The 1/5 scale–down model of the Bycatch Reduction Device (BRD) from an Argentinean demersal trawl was tested in a circulating water channel. The BRD is designed to help small Hake (merluza, merluccius hubbsi) to escape from a trawl. It is settled in front of a trawl codend, and is equipped with selection grids that help small fish to escape from the gear and guiding panels that help fish to meet with the grids. Bars of the grids are wires covered by the PVC and other parts of the BRD are made of net. When the velocity was less than 0.65 m/sec (2.81 Kont when translated to real towing speed) which is slow speed compared with real towing speed, position between an upper guiding panel and an upper selection grid were good to help small fish to escape. When the velocity was more than 0.8 m/sec (3.41 Knot when translated to real towing speed) which is similar to and faster than real towing speed, it was considered that small fish may have difficulties in escaping because the gap was not enough between an upper guiding panel and an upper selection grid. The lower selection grid was sat on the bottom of the tank without an angle due to the weight that it carries. Improvements were proposed to position the panels and the grids better.
The purpose of this study is to identify the flow resistance of the bottom pair trawl nets. The bottom pair trawl nets being used in fishing vessel (100G/T, 550ps) was selected as a full-scale net, and 1/10, 1/25 and 1/50 of the model nets were made. Converted into the full-scale net by Tauti’s modeling rule and Kim’s modeling rule, when resistance coefficient k of each net was calculated by substituting into above equation for flow resistance R and wall area of nets S values of each net v. Because resistant coefficient k decreases exponentially according as flow velocity v increases to make k cv-m, c and m values of each net were compared. As a result, as the model was smaller, c and m values was smaller in the two rule into standard of 1/10 model value, decrease degree of 1/25 model was almost same in the two rule, decrease degree of 1/50 model was very big in Tauti’s modeling rule. Therefore, in the result of experiment, because average of c and m values for similarly 1/10 and 1/25 model were given c=4.9 (kgf․s2/m4) and m=0.45, R (kgf) of bottom pair trawl net could show R =4.9Sv1.55 using these values. As in the order of cod-end, wing and bag part for 1/25 and 1/50 model net were removed in turn, measured flow resistance of each, converted into the full-scale, total resistance of the net and the resistance of each part net were calculated. The resistance ratio of each part for total net was not same in 1/25 and 1/50 model each other, but average of two nets was perfectly same area ratio of each part as the wing, bag and cod-end part was 43%, 45% and 12%. However, the resistance of each part divided area of the part, calculated the resistance of per unit area, wing and bag part were not big difference each other, while the resistance of cod-end part was very large.
A model net experiment of the gape net for anchovy in Jindo, Jeollanam-do was carried out to investigate the net shape and hydrodynamic resistance using circulating water channel. The model net was made 1/33 down scale by Tauti’s similarity method and the range of experimental current speed was from 0.5 knot to 3.5 knot (increasing 0.5 knot interval). The net mouth height in 0.5 knot of the minimum experiment current speed was shown 26.0 cm (full-scale conversion value 8.58 m). The net mouth height and mouth area in 1.5 knot of the same current speed with a gape net fishing ground were shown 20.0 cm (full-scale conversion value : 6.60 m) and about 507.9 cm2 (full-scale conversion value : 55.31 m2). The net mouth height and area were decreased with increase the experimental current speed. The hydrodynamic resistance of the model net in 1.5 knot current speed was shown 1.11 kgf and the value of full-scale conversion by Tauti’s method was shown 3.996 ton.
