PURPOSES : The main purpose of this study is to identify directions for improvement of triangular islands installation warrants through analysis of the characteristics of crashes and severity with and without triangular islands on intersections. METHODS : The data was collected by referring to the literature and analyzed using statistical analysis tools. First, an independence test analyzed whether statistically significant differences existed between crashes depending on the installation of triangular islands. As a result of the analysis, individual prediction models were developed for cases with significant differences. In addition, each crash factor was derived by comparison with each model. RESULTS : Significant differences appeared in the "crash frequency of serious or fatal" and "crash severity" owing to the installation of triangular islands. As a result of comparing crash factors through the individual models, it was derived that the differences were dependent on the installation of the triangular islands. CONCLUSIONS : As a result of reviewing previous studies, it is found that improving the installation warrants of triangular islands is reasonable. Through this study, the need to consider the volume and composition ratio of right-turn vehicles when installing a triangular island was also derived; these results also need to be referred to when improving the triangular island installation warrants.

PURPOSES : The primary purpose of this study is to establish a crash probability model based on a statistical method that explains the relationship between regressor and explanatory variables using both fixed and random effects to control the heterogeneous characteristics of the observed data. In addition, an attempt was made to discover the leading cause of crashes by vehicle type, including passenger car, bus, truck, and trailer. METHODS : The levels of each route and day of the week are grouped using raw expressway crash data for 10 years from 2012 to 2021, and a multilevel mixed-effect logit model is constructed for each vehicle type assuming that the error terms are derived from the hierarchical structure of the group to which they belong. RESULTS : Speeding and obstacles on the road are significant factors that increase the probability of passenger car crashes, and bus crashes have a high rate at toll gates on weekdays. CONCLUSIONS : The multilevel mixed-effect logit model derived in the study has higher accuracy than the general logit model, confirming that mixed-effect analysis is plausible.

PURPOSES : The percentage of vehicle overturning accidents is 16.3% of vehicle alone fatal accidents, with a fatality rate of 9.0%, accounting for a high proportion, and heavy vehicles with a high center of gravity are vulnerable to overturning accidents. In the standard guidelines of Super-Bus Rapid Transit(S-BRT), it is recommended to install physical facilities that separate buses from other traffic on dedicated bus ways, and lane separation facilities are being developed. To develop low-profile lane separation facilities that do not interfere with sight obstruction for pedestrians and drivers, it is necessary to review the height of lane separation facilities to prevent overturning crashes of heavy vehicles. METHODS : Heavy vehicle impact conditions of 8ton-55km/h-15°, 8ton-55km/h-20°, 8ton-65km/h-15°, and 8ton-65km/h-20°were applied to compare the vehicle behavior by the height of lane separation facilities using LS-DYNA, a three-dimensional nonlinear impact analysis program based on speed and angle changes. In addition, the behavior of the vehicle after the collision was analyzed to examine the impact conditions in which an overturning crash occurs when a heavy vehicle collides with a low-profile lane separation facility and the appropriate height of the facility to prevent overturning. RESULTS : In general, under the 8ton-65km/h-15°condition, which is a heavy vehicle impact condition used in the performance standard of the barrier, the vehicle’s behavior after the collision was stable as the height of the lane separation facility increased. CONCLUSIONS : Therefore, when the impact conditions were 8ton-65km/h-15°or less, it was determined that the appropriate height to prevent the condition of the lane separation facility was 400mm or more.

The event recording devices such as EDR and DTG have recently been developed and installed in automobiles. The reliability of EDR application is being conducted in many previous studies, but with the development and development of autonomous vehicles, it is necessary to study the reliability of EDR and DTG application results for programs that can analyze autonomous driving. Therefore, in this study, the analysis was carried out in a way to secure the reliability of the application results of EDR and DTG of Carmaker, which can analyze the traffic accident analysis program PC-Crash and autonomous driving, and secure the reliability of the Carmaker program that applied EDR in Korea and abroad. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the speed error rate gradually increased from high speed to low speed, and the maximum error speed was less than 5 km/h through the average error rate for each speed. In the future, it is thought that it can be usefully used for analysis of traffic accidents in the event of autonomous vehicle accidents.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between occupant impact velocities and occupant injury indices under the restraint of an airbag and a seat belt, during frontal crash events. METHODS : The frontal crash test data of 93 tests conducted according to the Korea New Car Assessment Program (KNCAP) were investigated. The test data was measured by using a dummy to obtain occupant injury indices for the head, chest, neck, and upper legs. Occupant impact velocities (OIVx and OIVz) were calculated from the head acceleration of the test dummy. Pearson's correlation analysis and regression analysis were used to investigate the correlation between occupant impact velocities and occupant injury indices. In addition, the occupant impact velocities at the center of gravity of a vehicle, obtained by using the accelerations measured at the test vehicle's B-pillars, were investigated. RESULTS: The OIVx threshold obtained from the test dummies, which corresponds to the HIC15 of 700, was 70 km/h for a sedan, and 72 km/h for an SUV, which is significantly higher than the occupant impact velocity of 44 km/h, the limit of the domestic guideline on “Installation and management guide for roadside safety facilities”. This difference can be attributed to the influence of the air bags and seat belts. Additionally, the OIVx threshold obtained from the center of gravity of the vehicle corresponding to the HIC15 of 700 was approximately 72 km/h. CONCLUSIONS: Occupant safety performance criteria for the condition that airbags operate and seat belts are restrained, are required for the frontal impact tests of road safety facilities using a collision velocity of 60 km/h or higher.

PURPOSES: This study, compared and verified the test results of post-bearing capacity and the test results of a full-scale vehicle crash test on flat ground and slope ground. METHODS: The results of the bearing capacity test on the barrier post show that, the bearing capacity of the banking section ground and flat ground was relatively large. In the full-scale vehicle crash test, the maximum deformation of the barrier was not large, and the occupant safety indexes(THIV, PHD) were relatively similar. The post-bearing capacity test is a static load test. RESULTS: Therefore, there was a large difference on the flat ground and on the banking section ground because of the effect of soil failure. On the other hand, the full-scale vehicle crash test is close to the impact load. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, it can be concluded that the whole barrier system was not affected by soil failure alone.

PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to develop a crash prediction model at signalized intersections, which can capture the randomness and uncertainty of traffic accident forecasting in order to provide more precise results. METHODS: The authors propose a random parameter (RP) approach to overcome the limitation of the Count model that cannot consider the heterogeneity of the assigned locations or road sections. For the model’s development, 55 intersections located in the Daejeon metropolitan area were selected as the scope of the study, and panel data such as the number of crashes, traffic volume, and intersection geometry at each intersection were collected for the analysis. RESULTS: Based on the results of the RP negative binomial crash prediction model developed in this study, it was found that the independent variables such as the log form of average annual traffic volume, presence or absence of left-turn lanes on major roads, presence or absence of right-turn lanes on minor roads, and the number of crosswalks were statistically significant random parameters, and this showed that the variables have a heterogeneous influence on individual intersections. CONCLUSIONS : It was found that the RP model had a better fit to the data than the fixed parameters (FP) model since the RP model reflects the heterogeneity of the individual observations and captures the inconsistent and biased effects.

PURPOSES :In this study, we analyzed the road crossing behavior of older pedestrians on a mid-block signalized crosswalk, and compared it to that of younger pedestrians. In addition, we analyzed the correlation between accidents involving older pedestrians while crossing roads and their behavioral characteristics. Finally, we confirmed the reasons for an increase in accidents involving older pedestrians.METHODS :First, 30 areas with the highest incidence of accidents involving older pedestrians while crossing roads were selected as target areas for analysis. Next, we measured the start-up delay (the time elapsed from the moment the signal turns green to the moment the pedestrian starts walking) and head movement (the number of head turns during crossing a road) of 900 (450 older and 450 younger) pedestrians. The next step was to conduct a survey and confirm the differences in judgment between older and younger pedestrians about approaching vehicles. Finally, we analyzed the correlation between the survey results and traffic accidents.RESULTS :The average start-up delay and head movement of the older pedestrians was 1.58 seconds and 3.15 times, respectively. A definite correlation was obtained between head movement and the frequency of pedestrian traffic accidents. The results of our survey indicate that 17.3% of the older pedestrians and 7.8% of the younger pedestrians have a high crash risk.CONCLUSIONS :Behavioral characteristics of older pedestrians were closely correlated with accidents involving older pedestrians while crossing roads in mid-block signalized crosswalks. Our study indicates that in order to reduce the number of accidents involving older pedestrians, it is necessary to develop an improvement plan including measures such as installation of safety facilities taking the behavioral characteristics of older pedestrians into consideration and their safety education.

OBJECTIVES : Fixed roadside objects are a threat to drivers when their vehicles deviate from the road. Therefore, such roadside objects need to be suitably dealt with to decrease accidents. This study determines the factors affecting the severity of accidents because of fixed roadside objects. METHODS : This study analyzed the crash severity impact of fixed roadside objects by using ordered probit regression as the analysis methodology. In this research, data from 896 traffic accidents reported in the last three years were used. These accidents consisted of sole-car accidents, fixed roadside object accidents, and lane-departure accidents on the national highway of Korea. The accident severity was classified as light injury, severe injury, and death. The factors relating to the road and the driver were collected as independent variables. RESULTS: The result of the analysis showed that the variables of the crash severity impact are the collision location (left side), gender of the driver (female), alcohol use, collision facility (roadside trees, traffic signals, telephone poles), and type of road (rural segments). Additionally, the collision location (left side), gender of the driver (female), alcohol use, collision facility (street trees, traffic signals, telephone poles), and type of road (rural segments), in order of influence, were found to be the factors affecting the crash severity in accidents due to fixed roadside objects. CONCLUSIONS: An alternative solution is urgently required to reduce the crash severity in accidents due to fixed roadside objects. Such a solution can consider the appropriate places to install breakaway devices and energy-absorbing systems.

This study dealt with truck crash performance evaluation of new guardrails made of PosMac steels considering the ground bearing capacity effect. Subsequent crash simulation results for SB2 and SB4 grades present that the developed model performs much better in containing and redirecting the impacting vehicle in a stable manner. In this paper, the existing finite element crash analysis of guardrails using the LS-DYNA program is further extended to study the nonlinear dynamic response of the guardrail structures with new type poles supported by external stiffeners. The numerical results for various parameters are verified by comparing different grades with displacements occurred in the barrier from the crash simulation.

Separately from a single body, crash box is maufactured into the two alumnae by bonding adhesive. Crashbox has the property to absorb the shock by impact transferred to the car body at the collision between cars. In this study, the structural effect and performance are investigated according to the positions of holes punched at this crash box. The optimal structure is investigated for optimal design data of aluminum crash box. The equivalent stresses of study models distributed by compressive loads are compared with each other by using the analysis program of ANSYS. Total energies and mechanical strengths of study models at the real situation are also analyzed. As analysis results, the maximum equivalent stresses of 40880MPa, 42368MPa, 43176MPa, 44960MPa and 43476MPa are shown at study models due to the hole positions of 10mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm and 30mm from the upper plane of crash box respectively. Also, the total energy on analysis are verified within the error range of 10 % by comparing that on experiment at the hole position of 10mm. It is thought that the crash box due to the hole position from the upper plane of crash box can be effectively designed through this study result.
