This study investigated the effects of annealing environment for the densification and purification properties of pure titanium coating layer manufactured by cold spraying. The annealing was conducted at /1 h and three kinds of environments of vacuum, Ar gas, and mixture gas were controlled. Cold sprayed Ti coating layer (as sprayed) represented 6.7% of porosity and 228 HV of hardness, showing elongated particle shapes (severe plastic deformation) perpendicular to injection direction. Regardless of gas environments, all thermally heat treated coating layers consisted of pure -Ti and minimal oxide. Vacuum environment during heat treatment represented superior densification properties (3.8% porosity, 156.7 HV) to those of Ar gas (5.3%, 144.5 HV) and mixture gas (5.5%, 153.1 HV). From the results of phase analysis (XRD, EPMA, SEM, EDS), it was found that the vacuum environment during heat treatment could be effective for reducing oxide contents (purification) in the Ti coating layer. The characteristic of microstructural evolution with heat treatment was found to be different at three different gas environments. The controlling method for improving densification and purification in the cold sprayed Ti coating material was also discussed.

In this study, a high energy ball milling process was employed in order to improve the densification of direct nitrided AlN powder. The densification behavior and the sintered microstructure of the milled AlN powder were investigated. Mixture of AlN powder doped with 5 wt.% as a sintering additive was pulverized and dispersed up to 50 min in a bead mill with very small beads. Ultrafine AlN powder with a particle size of 600 nm and a specific surface area of 9.54 was prepared after milling for 50 min. The milled powders were pressureless-sintered at for 4 h under atmosphere. This powder showed excellent sinterability leading to full densification after sintering at for 4 h. However, the sintered microstructure revealed that the fraction of yitttium aluminate increased with milling time and sintering temperature and the newly-secondary phase of ZrN was observed due to the reaction of AlN with the impurity.

In this study, powder metallurgy and severe plastic deformation by high-pressure torsion (HPT) approaches were combined to achieve both full density and grain refinement at the same time. Water-atomized pure iron powders were consolidated to disc-shaped samples at room temperature using HPT of 10 GPa up to 3 turns. The resulting microstructural size decreases with increasing strain and reaches a steady-state with nanocrystalline (down to ~250 nm in average grain size) structure. The water-atomized iron powders were deformed plastically as well as fully densified, as high as 99% of relative density by high pressure, resulting in effective grain size refinements and enhanced microhardness values.

In the present study, Zr-base metallic glass(MG)/diamond composites are fabricated using a combination of gas-atomization and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The densification behaviors of mixtures of soft MG and hard diamond powders during consolidation process are investigated. The influence of mixture characteristics on the densification is discussed and several mechanism explaining the influence of diamond particles on consolidation behaviour are proposed. The experimental results show that consolidation is enhanced with increasing diamond/Metallic Glass(MG) size ratio, while the diamond fraction is fixed.

Magnesium and its alloys are attractive as light weight structural/functional materials for high performance application in automobile and electronics industries due to their superior physical properties. In order to obtain high quality products manufactured by the magnesium powders, it is important to control and understand the densification behavior of the powders. The effect of the sheath surrounding the magnesium powders on the plastic deformation and densification behavior during equal channel angular pressing was investigated in the study by experimental and the finite element methods. A modified version of Lee-Kim's plastic yield criterion, notably known as the critical relative density model, was applied to simulate the densification behavior of magnesium powders. In addition, a new approach that extracts the mechanical characteristics of both the powder and the matrix was developed. The model was implemented into the finite element method, with which powder compaction under equal channel angular pressing was simulated.

Numerical simulations of the powder extrusion need an appropriate pressure-dependent constitutive model for densification modeling of the magnesium powders. The present research investigated the effect of representative powder yield function of the critical relative density model. We could obtain reasonable physical properties of pure magnesium powders using cold isostatic pressing. The proposed densification model was implemented into the finite element code. The finite element analysis was applied to simulation of powder extrusion of pure magnesium powder in order to investigate the densification and processing load at room temperature.

In this study, bottom-up powder processing and top-down severe plastic deformation processing approaches were combined in order to achieve both full density and grain refinement with least grain growth. The numerical modeling of the powder process requires the appropriate constitutive model for densification of the powder materials. The present research investigates the effect of representative powder yield function of the Shima-Oyane model and the critical relative density model. It was found that the critical relative density model is better than the Shima-Oyane model for powder densification behavior, especially for initial stage.

In this research, fine-structure TiO2 bulks were fabricated in a combined application of magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and subsequent sintering and their densification behavior was investigated. The obtained density of TiO2 bulk prepared via the combined processes increased as the MPC pressure increased from 0.3 to 0.7 GPa. Relatively higher density (88%) in the MPCed specimen at 0.7 GPa was attributed to the decrease of the inter-particle distance of the pre-compacted component. High pressure and rapid compaction using magnetic pulsed compaction reduced the shrinkage rate (about 10% in this case) of the sintered bulks compared to general processing (about 20%). The mixing conditions of PVA, water, and TiO2 nano powder for the compaction of TiO2 nano powder did not affect the density and shrinkage of the sintered bulks due to the high pressure of the MPC.

The effect of sintering aids and glass-frit on the densification and resistivity of silver paste was investigated in an effort to enhance the sintered density and electrical conductivity of the silver electrode. To prepare Pb-free silver paste for use at low sintering temperatures, two commercial silver powders (0.8 μm and 1.6 μm in size) and 5wt.% lab-synthesized nanoparticles (30-50 nm in size) as a sintering aids were mixed with 3 wt.% or 6 wt.% of glass frit (Bi2O3-based) using a solvent and three roll mills. Thick films from the silver paste were prepared by means of screen printing on an alumina substrate followed by sintering at 450˚C to 550˚C for 15 min. Silver thick films from the paste with bimodal particles showed a high packing density, high densification during sintering and low resistivity compared to films created using monomodal particles. Silver nanoparticles as a sintering aid enhanced the densification of commercial silver powder at a low sintering temperature and induced low resistivity in the silver thick film. The glass frit also enhanced the densification of the films through liquid phase sintering; however, the optimum content of glass frit is necessary to ensure that a dense microstructure and low resistivity are obtained, as excessive glass-frit can provoke low conductivity due to the interconnection of the glass phase with the high resistivity between the silver particles.

[ BaO·Nd2O3·5TiO2 ] (BNT) ceramics modified with a borate glass containing Ba, Nd and Ti as glass constituents were investigated with regard to their sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties. An addition of iso-component glass significantly improved the sinterabilty of the BNT ceramics and lowered the sintering temperature. A maximum density of 5.29 g/cm3 and an x-y shrinkage of 17% were obtained for BNT ceramics containing 10wt.% of the glass sintered at 1100˚C. The dielectric composition without the glass additive was only slightly densified at 1100˚C. The resulting sample exhibited two crystalline phases, BaNd2Ti5O14 and Ba2Ti9O20, regardless of sintering temperature and glass content. When >10wt.% glass was added, exaggerated grain growth with a less uniform microstructure was found, resulting in the subsequent reduction of the fired density and the dielectric properties. BNT ceramics containing 10wt.% of the isocomponent glass sintered at 1100˚C for 4 h showed promising dielectric properties of k = 71.3 and Q = 1,330.

This article presents the challenges toward the successful consolidation of nanopowder using magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC). In this research the ultrafine-structured bulks have been fabricated by the combined application of magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and subsequent sintering, and their properties were investigated. The obtained density of bulk prepared by the combined processes was increased with increasing MPC pressure from 0.5 to 1.25 GPa. Relatively higher hardness and fracture toughness in the MPCed specimen at 1.25 GPa were attributed to the retention of the nanostructure in the consolidated bulk without cracks. The higher fracture toughness could be attributed to the crack deflection by homogeneous distribution and the retention of nanostructure, regardless of the presence of porosities. In addition, the as consolidated bulk using magnetic pulsed compaction showed enhanced breakdown voltage.

The fabrication of Fe alloy-40 wt.%TiC composite materials using spark plasma sintering process after ball-milling was studied. Raw powders to fabricate Fe alloy-TiC composite were Fe alloy, and activated carbon. Fe alloy powder was Distaloy AE (4%Ni-1%Cu-0.5%Mo-0.01%C-bal.%Fe) made by Hoeganes company with better toughness and lower melting point. These powders were ball-milled in horizontal attrition ball mill at a ball-to-powder weight ratio of 30 : 1. After that, these mixture powders were sintered by using spark plasma sintering apparatus for 5 min at in vacuum atmosphere under torr. DistaloyAE-40 wt.%TiC composite was directly synthesized by dehydrogenation and carburization reaction during sintering process. The phase transformation of as-milled powders and sintered materials was confirmed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The density and harness materials was measured in order to confirm the densification behavior. In case of DistaloyAE-40 wt.%TiC composite retained for 5 min at , it has the relative density of about 96% through the influence of rapid densification and fine TiC particle reinforced Fe-based composites materials.

Nanostructured metallic materials are synthesized by bottom-up processing which starts with powders for assembling bulk materials or top-down processing starting with a bulk solid. A representative bottom-up and top-down paths for bulk nanostructured/ultrafine grained metallic materials are powder consolidation and severe plastic deformation (SPD) methods, respectively. In this study, the bottom-up powder and top-down SPD approaches were combined in order to achieve both full density and grain refinement without grain growth, which were considered as a bottle neck of the bottom-up method using conventional powder metallurgy of compaction and sintering. For the powder consolidation, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), one of the most promising method in SPD, was used. The ECAP processing associated with stress developments was investigated. ECAP for powder consolidation were numerically analyzed using the finite element method (FEM) in conjunction with pressure and shear stress.

In this study, bottom-up type powder processing and top-down type SPD (severe plastic deformation) approaches were combined in order to achieve both full density and grain refinement of metallic powders with least grain growth. ECAP (Equal channel angular pressing) was used for the powder consolidation. We investigated the consolidation, plastic deformation and microstructure evolution behavior of the metallic powders during ECAP using an experimental method. It was found that high mechanical strength could be achieved effectively as a result of the well bonded powder contact surface during ECAP process of gas atomized Al-Si powders.

This paper will describe a powder and processing method that facilitates single press-single sintered densities approaching 7.5 g/cm³. At this sintered density, mechanical properties of the powder metal (P/M) component are significantly improved over current P/M technologies and begin to approach the performance of wrought steels. High performance gears have the added requirement of rolling contact fatigue durability that is dependent upon localized density and thermal processing. Combining high density processing of engineered P/M materials with selective surface densification enables powder metal components to achieve rolling contact fatigue durability and mechanical property performance that satisfy the performance requirements of many high strength automotive transmission gears. Data will be presented that document P/M part performance in comparison to conventional wrought steel grades.
