The Republic of Korea has implemented an obligatory vaccination on major livestock breeds to prevent and eradicate nationwide foot and mouth disease (FMD) since the end of 2010. The government has executed massive serological survey to check the immune level of various herds after vaccination, and seropositive rates against FMD virus (FMDV) structural proteins can be measured to assess FMD immunity level. The purpose of this study is to investigate the FMDV serological level of every cattle breeding farm in the country and to determine whether there is a significant difference between groups classified by time, age, and management authority. A total of 5,781 serum samples was collected in 18 cattle breeding farms from 2020 to 2021, and the seropositive rates were measured using PrioCHECK FMDV Type O ELISA kit. Firstly, the cattle breeding farms were classified by which they are managed: the central government, the local government, and the private agency. Every management authority had a seropositive rate of 99.5% or higher. Secondly, the samples were divided into 6 to 12 months old, 12 to 24 months old, and 24 months or more. The 6 to 12 months old group in 2020 showed a significantly low seropositive rate of 98.1%, but it was improved by implementing the enhanced vaccination policy from 2021 to 100%. In summary, there are considerably high seropositive rates including all groups with time, age, and by which they are managed, which means the FMD vaccination in cattle breeding farms is well-managed.

Livestock production costs are heavily influenced by the cost of feed, The use of domestically grown forages is more desirable for livestock feed production. As part of this study, triticale, which is an extremely palatable and easily cultivable crop in Korea, was used to produce low moisture silage bales with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and then stored for different periods. We examined the nutrient content of silage, such as crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), as well as their organic acids, including lactic acid, acetic acid, butyric acid, at different storage periods. The nutrient content of silages, such as crude protein, ADF, and NDF, did not change significantly throughout storage periods. Organic acid data indicated that lactic acid concentrations increased with increasing moisture contents and storage periods up to nine months. However, further extending storage to 12 months resulted in a reduction in the lactic acid content of all silages as well as an increase in their pH. Based on the present results, it suggested that the production of low moisture silage with the LAB may be able to preserve and maintain its quality without altering its nutritional composition. Also, the lactate content of the silage remained significant for at least nine months.

L-asparaginase (ASNase) is a therapeutic enzyme used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Currently, the most widely used ASNases are originated from bacteria. However, owing to the adverse effects of bacterial ASNases, new resources for ASNase production should be explored. Fungal enzymes are considered efficient and compatible resources of natural products for diverse applications. In particular, fungal species belonging to the genus Trichoderma are well-known producers of several commercial enzymes including cellulase, chitinase, and xylanase. However, enzyme production by marine-derived Trichoderma spp. remains to be elucidated. While screening for extracellular ASNase-producing fungi from marine environments, we found four strains showing extracellular ASNase activity. Based on the morphological and phylogenetic analyses using sequences of translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1α), the Trichoderma isolates were identified as T. afroharzianum, T. asperellem, T. citrinoviride, and Trichoderma sp. 1. All four strains showed different ASNase activities depending on the carbon sources. T. asperellem MABIK FU00000795 showed the highest ASNase value with lactose as a carbon source. Based on our findings, we propose that marine-derived Trichoderma spp. are potential candidates for novel ASNase production.

The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of drip irrigation volume on tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) grown in a greenhouse using perlite medium. Plants were treated by three different irrigation treatment I0, I25, and I50 (where irrigation volume of I25 and I50 was 25% and 50% higher than I0, having limited or no leaching). Growth characteristics of plants, yield and water use efficiency were measured. The result showed that plant height, leaf length and leaf width were lowest in the I0 treated plants. However, these parameters were not statistically significant differences between the plants that were grown in the I25 and I50 treatment. Soluble solids content, acidity and dry matter of 111th, 132nd, and 143rd days harvested tomato were higher in the plants irrigated with lowest volume (I0) than the higher volume (I25 or I50). In addition, water content was lower in the 111th and 132nd days of harvested tomatoes from the I0 treatment. The number of big-size tomatoes (>180 g) was significantly higher in the I25 irrigated plants. There was no significant difference in the total number of harvested fruits among the treatments. The average fruit weight and total yield of harvested tomatoes were lowest in the I0 treated plants. The water consumption of tomato was not significantly different amongst the treatments but water use efficiency was lowest in the I0 treatment. Principal component analysis revealed that total soluble solid and acidity of tomato showed a positive correlation between each other. These results suggest that I25 was the optimum irrigation treatment for tomato based on its measured growth characteristics, yield and water use efficiency.

We conducted multi-elements determination of reference material certified by the Inorganic Ventures, IV-26, using iCAP 7400 ICP-OES of Thermo Fisher Scientific. And we statistically evaluated analysis results by introducing the in-house proficiency evaluation method implemented at the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Ca, Co, Fe, Mg, Ni, and V were selected as target elements, and extended uncertainty was estimated at a confidence level of about 95% and coverage factor k = 2. Five parameters incurred at manufacturing process (standard solution, calibration curve, repeated measurement and dilution factor of the test sample) were considered when determining the uncertainty. En-score can be calculated using the formula En=(x-X)/(Ulab 2+Uref 2)1/2 described in KS Q ISO 13528, where x, Ulab, X, and Uref are the test results, the uncertainty of the result, and the certified value and the uncertainty of the value. And if the absolute value |En| is less than 1, it can be evaluated as a satisfied value. As a result of ICP-OES analysis, each concentration of the elements to be measured was almost similar to the certified concentration of the reference material, and the uncertainty was slightly different. Also since evaluation on multi-elements determination had an En-score within 1, it was confirmed that the analysis results satisfied En evaluation.

Corrosion products generated from the oxidation of structure materials are deposited on the surface of coolant systems, forming CRUD (Corrosion Related Unidentified Deposits). The CRUD deposition on the fuel surface has influenced the heat transfer through the fuel rod. When CRUD was deposited on a fuel surface, heat resistance may increase, and this increase in heat resistance leads to the increase in temperature distribution from cladding to coolant. Also, the temperature distribution is related to the radiolytic and chemical reactions within the CRUD deposits. This influence may be enough to change the pH distribution within the CRUD deposits. To estimate the influence of thermal resistance, the composition, microstructure, and vapor fraction within the CRUD should be considered, by investigating the thermal conductivity model of CRUD deposits. Therefore, in this study, the CRUD thermal conductivity was studied through the literature study, by considering composition, capillary flow characteristics, and vapor fraction. For the uncertainty parameters, a sensitivity study was conducted to check the degree of influence on thermal conductivity. The effective thermal conductivity was applied to the radiochemistry model within the CRUD deposits and an analysis of the influence in radiolysis reaction within the CRUD deposits with a fixed thickness.

A large amount of concrete radioactive waste is generated during the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, including nuclear power plants, and it is expected that the radioactive waste management expenses will be huge. In order to reduce the concrete radioactive waste, a decontamination or removal process is required, but working on concrete may present a risk of worker exposure in a high-radioactive space. Therefore, in this study, a remote control integrated decontamination equipment that can reduce concrete radioactive waste and ensure the safety of workers during the concrete decontamination process in a high-radioactive space was developed. The integrated decontamination equipment consists of remote movement, automatic surface contamination measurement, automatic surface decontamination and debris/dust removal systems. The remote movement system generates ‘mapping data’ of topographic features for the work space and ‘location data’ that coordinates the location of the integrated decontamination equipment through LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) technique. The user can check the location of the integrated decontamination equipment through ‘location data’ outside the work space, and can move it by remote control through wired/wireless communication. The automatic surface contamination measurement system uses a radiation detector and an automatic measurement algorithm to generate ‘surface measurement data’ based on the measurement distance interval and measurement time set by the user. ‘Surface measurement data’ is combined with ‘location data’ to create a visualized map of radioactive contamination, and users can intuitively realize the location and degree of contamination based on the map. The automatic surface decontamination system uses a laser and an automatic removal algorithm to decontaminate the concrete surface. Concrete debris and dust generated during this process were collected by the debris/dust removal system, minimizing waste generation and radiation exposure due to secondary pollution. The integrated decontamination equipment developed through this study was applied with technologies that reduced radioactive concrete waste and ensured the safety of workers. If technology verification and on-site applicability review are performed using concrete specimens simulating nuclear power plant or similar environments, it is reasoned to contribute to the domestic and overseas decommissioning industry.

KHNP-CRI has developed Mega-Watt Class PTM (Plasma Torch Melter) for the purpose of reducing the volume of radioactive waste and immobilizing or solidifying radioactive materials. About 1 MW PTM is a treatment technology that operates a plasma torch and puts drum-shaped waste into a melter and radioactive waste in the form of slag is discharged into a waste container. Since only the overflowing slag is discharged from the melter, the discharge is intermittent. Therefore, solidification occurs in the process of discharging the melt. It is difficult to accumulate evenly in the waste container, and there is also an empty space. Solid radioactive waste must be disposed of to meet the acceptance criteria for radioactive waste. Plasma-treated solid waste raised concerns about the requirements. The waste solidification output in a slag container gave us some concerns for the waste package’s solidification and encapsulation requirements. The plasma-treated solid waste process to meet the acceptance criteria will be cost and need time consuming. Thus, a induction heating will be introduced to meet solidification requirements and test criteria of the solidification waste for the waste package disposal.
