The purpose of this study was to estimate the influence of the determinants for home meal replacement (HMR) purchase frequency before and after COVID-19. Multinomial logistic regression was applied to the 2018~2020 Consumer Behavior Survey for Food data from the Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI). Gender, age, number of households, monthly income, use of eating out, delivery and takeout order service, HMR food safety concern, the frequency of cooking at home, grocery shopping, and eating alone were applied as the explanatory variables to explain HMR purchase frequency. The results are as below. Compared to the previous year, the growth rate of HMR purchase frequency in 2020 was relatively high, indicating that the COVID-19 outbreak acted as a catalyst. Unlike in 2018 and 2019, there was no statistical difference in the HMR purchase frequency between single- and multi-person households in 2020, with indicating multi-person households began to emerge as one of the major HMR consumption groups. Unlike 2018, the 2020 HMR purchase frequency showed a statistically positive relationship with those of grocery shopping and eating alone. There was a positive relationship between the frequency of eating out/food delivery orders and HMR purchases. The more often cooking at home occurred, the less HMR food was purchased.
A winter forage tetraploid rye (Secale cereale L.) cultivar, ‘Daegokgreen’, was developed at the Department of Central Area Crop Science, NICS, RDA in 2016. The mutant line ‘CG11003-8-B’, which was induced from rye cultivar ‘Gogu’ (diploid) by colchicine treatment, was selected for its excellent agronomic performance and was placed in preliminary yield trials for one year, 2013. The line was designated “Homil59” and was tested for regional yield trials at the four locations in Korea from 2014 to 2016. Finally, the new cultivar was named as the ‘Daegokgreen’ (grant number 8274). The leaf of cultivar ‘Daegokgreen’ is wide, long and dark-green color. The cultivar also has a big-size grain with light-brown color. The heading date of cultivar ‘Daegokgreen’ was April 17 which was 2 days later than that of check cultivar ‘Gogu’. The tolerance to cold and wet injury, and resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust of the new cultivar were similar to those of the check cultivar but the resistance to the lodging of the new cultivar was stronger than that of the check. The average roughage fresh and dry matter yield of the new cultivar after 10 days from heading were 37.0 and 7.7 MT ha-1, respectively, which were similar to those (38.4 and 8.0 MT ha-1) of the check cultivar. The roughage quality of ‘Daegokgreen’ was higher in crude protein content (8.9%) than that of the check cultivar (7.9%), while was similar to the check in total digestible nutrients (56.9%). This cultivar is recommended for fall sowing forage crops at all of crop cultivation areas in Korea.
A barley(Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar 'Youjin' with hooded spike type having good silage quality was developed at National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2016. ‘Youjin’ showed both high yielding and cold resistance through the preliminary and advanced yield trials(PYT, AYT) from 2012 to 2013. We conducted regional yield trials(RYT) of ‘Youjin’ in six locations around Korea for three years from 2014 to 2016. It had erect plant type, growth habit of II, the green leaf and hooded awn type. In the paddy field its heading date was April 24 and the maturing date was May 25. Plant height was 99 cm and the number of spikes per m2 was 696. It has high rate of leaf blades, resistance to BaYMV(Barley Yellow Mosiac Virus) and good winter hardiness. The average dry matter of Youjin was about 17.2 MT ha-1 in the field. And feed quality of ‘Youjin’ was 10.6% of crude protein content, 24.8% of ADF(Acid Detergent Fiber), 43.5 % of NDF(Neutral Detergent Fiber), 69.1% of TDN(Total Digestible Nutrients). And also ‘Youjin’ had grade I of silage quality.

The cultivar ‘Choyoung’ has the leaves of medium width, long length and green color and a medium grain of brown color. The heading date of the cultivar ‘Choyoung’ was April 30 which was 2 days earlier than that of check cultivar ‘Shinyoung’. Its tolerance or resistance to cold, wet injury, powdery mildew, and leaf rust was similar to those of the check cultivar. But the resistance to the lodging of cultivar ‘Choyoung’ was stronger than that of the check. The average forage fresh and dry matter yield of cultivar ‘Choyoung’ at milk-ripe stages were 40.5 and 15.7 MT ha-1, respectively, which were similar to those (40.3 and 16.1 MT ha-1) of the check cultivar. The silage quality of ‘Choyoung’ was higher than that of the check cultivar ‘Shinyoung’ in crude protein content (5.9%), while was similar to the check cultivar ‘Shinyoung’ in acid detergent fiber (33.9%), neutral detergent fiber (57.3%), and total digestible nutrients (62.2%). It showed a grain yield of 5.59 MT ha-1, which was 38% higher than that of the check cultivar ‘Shinyoung’ (4.05 MT ha-1). This cultivar is recommended for fall sowing forage crops in areas in which average daily minimum mean temperatures in January are higher than -10 ℃.

Oats (Avena sativa L.), which are known as one of the forage crops of Korea, have good livestock palatability and are popular to cattle farmers because of their high dry matter. However, the cultivation of double cropping in the rice field was reluctant due to the late maturing for farmers to plant rice continuously. 'Hi-early', a winter oats for forage use, was developed by the breeding team at National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2016. It was derived from a cross between ‘517A2-121’(IT133383) and ‘CI7604’ (IT133379). As a result, the heading date of ‘Teajoong’ is April 27, and plant height is longer than whole crop barley, ‘Youngyang’ or whole crop wheat, ‘Cheongwoo’, spike length are also large, fresh and dry matter yield are also high. In case of feed value, ‘Taejoong’ had higher crude protein content than whole crop barley, ‘Youngyang’ or whole crop wheat, ‘Cheongwoo’, lower NDF and ADF contents, and significantly higher digestible nutrient contents(p<0.05). In case of fermentation qulity, pH of ‘Taejoong’ was 4.2, and lactic acid content was lower than ‘Cheongwoo’ silage and significantly higher than ‘Youngyang’ silage(p<0.05). Acetic acid content was significantly lower than ‘Youngyang’ and ‘Cheongwoo’ silage(p<0.01), butyric acid content was significantly lower than that of ‘Youngyang’ silage (p<0.05). The final Flieg's score showed that ‘Taejoong’ silage was the best. Also income of ‘Taejoong’ improved than ‘Youngyang’ or ‘Cheongwoo’. Therefore, ‘Taejoong’ is considered sufficiently available as whole crop for forage.
