The objective of this study was to determine the effect of goat grazing on the surface water quality of the alpine grasslands. Seven sites were selected across the goat farm for water sample collection and analysis. Samples were analyzed for BOD (Biological oxygen demand), total nitrogen, total phosphorous, electrical conductivity and water turbidity. All the above-mentioned parameters remained below the standard limit of Korean government at the end site. Puddles showed higher values, but below standard, as stagnant water has lower physico-chemical properties as of flowing water. The present study clearly showed that goat grazing doesn’t affect water quality in grasslands if grazing is according to carrying capacity of grassland and fertilizer application is judicious.

Microalgae are of significant importance for future biotechnological applications. Many microalgae banks or laboratories attempt to maintain various microalgae for further research purposes. Cryopreservation has been preferred to reduce a labor-intensive and costly routine sub-culturing. Cryopreservation can also diminish the genetic drift risk. However, cryopreservation as a long term storage of microalgae method are still in developing progress because it cannot be generalized for all microalgae. Microalgae types, cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) types, freezing and thawing methods are the most important factors that should be considered for cryopreservation. In this short review the basic principles and the current advanced of microalgae cryopreservation methods are discussed with a suggested starting parameters for microalgae cryopreservation.

Four pluriparous Korean black goat does were superovulated with FSH and mated with fertile bucks. Anesthetized animals were placed in lateral recumbency, then size 8 Foley catheter was inserted into the uterus through the cervix under the vaginal speculum and the balloon was inflated to fix the catheter in the uterine body. The opposite end of the catheter was connected to a 3-way and a flushing medium was infused into the uterus. Modified Dubecco’s PBS with 1% FBS was used as the flushing medium. Four goats were allocated in two groups depending on the type of medium infusion into uterus. Injection group; the flushing medium was injected into uterus and the infused medium was collected by to-and-fro method using a syringe. Gravity-flow group; the flushing medium was allowed to enter the uterus by gravity flow by lifting the medium bottle and drained out of the uterus into a collecting tube. All four goats had catheter inserted through the cervix and uteri flushed successfully. The volume (recovery rate) of recovered medium varied considerably from 87 ml/200 ml (43.5%) to 148 ml/160 ml (92.5%). Nine embryos/ova in total were recovered from Gravity-flow group goats. Although the embryo recovery rate was low, the possibility of a transcervical embryo recovery in Korean black goat had been proven in this preliminary experiment.

Environmental enrichment is the process of providing stimulating environments for zoo animals in order for them to demonstrate their species-typical behavior, to allow them exercise control or choice over their environment, and to enhance their well-being. We are aimed to provide the available knowledges about the animal enrichment programs for zoo animals through literature review. As the results, we reviewed the design of stimulating and naturalistic enclosures, the housing etc. Enrichment includes the design of stimulating and naturalistic enclosures, the housing of appropriate social groups in zoo, and the introduction of objects, sounds, smells or other stimuli in the animal’s environment. Conclusionally, environmental enrichment is just as critical to Zoo animal welfare as nutrition and veterinary medicine. At the zoos, enrichment will be an integral part of the daily care of the species in the collection.

Salsola komarovi Iljin is a halophyte and herbaceous annual native to the sand dunes and beaches of Japan, northern China, Sakhalin, and Korea. The plants have been known as an ecologically important species for enhancing formation of sand dunes in Korea. The purpose of this study was to examine the anti-gastric ulcer effect of Salsola komarovi Iljin halophyte in an HCl-ethanol-induced gastritis model. SD rats (7-weeks-old) were divided into normal (I, n=10), control (II, 60% HCl-ethanol + water, n=10), 60% HCl-ethanol + Ranitidine 300 mg/kg (III, n=10), 60% HCl-ethanol + Salicornia herbacea L. 500 mg/kg (IV, n=10), 60% HCl-ethanol + 50% alcohol extract of Salsola komarovi Iljin 500 mg/kg (V, n=10), and 60% HCl-ethanol + water extract of Salsola komarovi Iljin 500 mg/kg (VI, n=10) groups. Salsola komarovi Iljin significantly suppressed gastric lesions and ulcers in the 60% HCl-ethanol-induced gastric model. Especially, 500 mg/kg of 50% alcohol extract of Salsola komarovi Iljin showed significant inhibitory effects against gastritis. Especially, 50% alcohol extract of Salsola komarovi Iljin 500 mg/kg showed a significantly inhibitory effect, which was more potent than that of 300 mg/kg of Ranitidine. In histopathological analysis of the animal model, Salsola komarovi Iljin attenuated gastric ulcer formation. Our results suggest that Salsola komarovi Iljin has inhibitory effects against gastritis and gastric ulcers and could be developed as a new anti-gastric ulcer agent.

This study investigated the effects of Acorus gramineus aroma on electrical activity in the brain as evaluated by an electroencephalogram (EEG). The subject was 20 healthy female young adult. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal, temporal, occipital, and parietal lobes according to the international 10-20 system. The subject was exposed to Acorus gramineus aroma for a period of 1 minutes each before, and after aroma smelling. Acorus gramineus aroma increased the alpha power/beta power ratio on the frontal and parietal lobes of the brain. These increases induced by the increased alpha power. The increased alpha power induced calmness and stable status. It is concluded that Acorus gramineus aroma diminishes the state of wakefulness in the brain; alpha powers/beta powers ratio was decreased in the brain of subject. Acorus gramineus aroma may be used for a sleep-inducing effect.

Canine herpesvirus (CHV) is a member of the alphaherpesvirus subfamily, which can cause severe hemorrhagic diseases in neonatal pups as well as mild or subclinical respiratory infections in adult dogs. We examined the effects of cold stress on disease progression of CHV, an alphaherpesvirus, in neonatal puppies. Eight puppies were challenged intranasally with CHV suspension and divided into a cold stress treatment group and a hyperthermal group. Four pups were left uninoculated as controls and divided into cold and hyperthermal groups. In the challenged cold treatment group, all pups showed CHV-related disease within 5 days; pathological changes were observed in organs of puppies showing clinical symptoms. Grossly, numerous petechial red foci were scattered throughout lungs, kidneys, livers, and intestines of all CHV-infected puppies exposed to cold stress. Most puppies showed typical clinical signs and macroscopic lesions, and CHV infection was confirmed by isolation of the virus. However, in the challenged hyperthermal group, only one of the pups showed mild symptoms of CHV-induced disease. None of the puppies in the uninoculated group showed abnormal signs, although they were exposed to cold stress. These findings indicate that cold stress can cause rapid disease progression of CHV, an alphaherpesvirus.

Transducin-like enhancer protein 1(TLE-1) is protein associated with cell proliferation. This study analyzed change of TLE-1 mRNA expression during in vivo and in vitro maturation in porcine oocytes. Oocytes and granulose cells were collected from follicles of <2 mm, 2~6 mm and >6 mm in diameter in slaughtered pig’s ovaries. Oocytes collected from follicles of 2~6 mm in diameter were used after in vitro maturation for 0, 10, 20 and 44 h. Cumulus cells and granulose cells were collected after treatment with hyaluronidase. In results, TLE-1 mRNA expression in oocytes collected from follicle >6 mm in diameter is increased, TLE-1 RNA expression in cumulus cells and granulosa cells from follicles <2 mm, 2 mm 6 mm and >6 mm in diameter. However, there is no significant difference. On the other hand, TLE-1 mRNA expression from oocytes cultured for 10 h and 44 h is increased, TLE-1 mRNA in cumulus cells cultured for 10 h is significant increased(p<0.05) than other culture periods. In conclusion, these results show that TLE-1 is expressed in all cell types of oocytes, cumulus cells and granulose cells, and associated with oocyte maturation.

We review recent observational results on early type galaxies obtained with high spatial resolution Chandra data. With its unprecedented high spatial resolution, Chandra reveals many intriguing features in early type galaxies which were not identified with the previous X-ray missions. In particular, various fine structures of the hot ISM in early type galaxies are detected, for example, X-ray cavities which are spatially coincident with radio jets/lobes, indicating the interaction between the hot ISM and radio jets. Also point sources (mostly LMXBs) are individually resolved down to Lx = a few x 10 37 erg sec-1 and it is for the first time possible to unequivocally investigate their properties and the X-ray luminosity function. After correcting for incompleteness, the XLF of LMXBs is well reproduced by a single power law with a slope of -1.0 - -1.5, which is in contrast to the previous report on the existence of the XLF break at Lx, Eddington = 2 x 10 38 erg sec-1 (i.e., Eddington luminosity of a neutron star binary). Carefully considering both detected and undetected, hidden populations of point sources we further discuss the XLF of LMXBs and the metal abundance of the hot ISM and their impact on the properties of early type galaxies.
