This study was conducted to investigate the community structure and species distribution of ground beetle assemblages in Yeongwol-gun (19 sites) and Donggang river basin area (6 sites). Ground beetles were collected by pitfall traps from 19 study sites from 2013 to 2014. A total of 67 species were identified from 9,710 collected ground beetles. Species richness in mountainous forests of Yeongwol-gun (55.8±1.90) estimated by rarefaction curves was higher than those in Donggang river areas (28.0±0.06). Four dominant species, Synuchus nitidus (3,974 individuals) and Synuchus cycloderus (2,595 individuals), Synuchus sp.1 (830 individuals), and Eucarabus cartereti cartereti (434 individuals) were occupied 80.7% of total, but their relative abundance were different according to geographical locations. Species richness of total carabid beetles was positively related to elevation (linear regression, F1, 23 = 22.41, adj. r2=0.47, P < 0.001) and it showed a U-shaped curve with longitudinal gradient (curvilinear regression, F2, 22 = 10.82, adj. r2=0.50, P < 0.001). And species richness maps that are focused on south-western areas of Gangwon-do including Yeongwol-gun, Jeongseon-gun, and Pyeongchang-gun were generated using ArcGIS 10.1. In species composition, longitude and elevation were best predictors to determine the distribution of carabid beetles by MRT analysis (Error = 0.517, CV Error = 1.04). These results indicated that habitat management regimes for biodiversity conservation should be conducted in considering geography and topography, although further studies are still necessary on the distributional pattern of other insect taxa and the relationship between biodiversity and more environmental variables.

Calepitrimerus vitis (Nalepa) is a grapevine pest and distributed worldwide. This study was conducted to identify grapevine damage related to density of C. vitis and to suggest an effective control time. The damaged flower buds displayed retarded growth and became dried up, and symptoms of damaged leaves such as malformed and bronzed leaves were observed. Flower cluster and leaves were collected and density of the grape rust mite were observed by using a washing and sieving method. The highest mean density (±SE) of C. vitis was found to be 672.6±112.9 per flower cluster with mid-level damage, and 450.1±66.5 per 2 leaves was found on the damaged leaves. These severe damage symptoms were observed in the early spring, and the density of the grape rust mite was significantly higher as 80 times in damaged vineyard than in the undamaged at the early growth stages of the grapevine. To determine the emergence time of the grape rust mite from lower part of a winter bud the ratio of density of C. vitis on upper-bud to lower-bud was observed. On 13 April 2015, 80% of the grape rust mites were observed on upper-bud where the mite could feed at the bud burst stage. Therefore, once the symptoms of damaged flower clusters and leaves are observed, acaricides should be sprayed before inflorescence emergence, and at the early growth stage between bud burst and leaf development in following year. This would allow the decrease of the density of C. vitis in early spring, and the progression of severe damage could be prevented.

This study was conducted to investigate the distributional characteristics of ground beetles and to provide basis information for biodiversity management including the ground beetles in the Naejangsan National Park area. Pitfall traps were installed throughout 20 sites within Naejangsan National Park during 2008 to 2011 to collect ground beetles. A total of 2,409 collected ground beetles were identified with 35 species belonging to 19 genera of 8 subfamilies. Coptolabrus jankowskii jankowskii, Eucarabus sternbergi sternbergi, and Pterosticus audax were dominant at the core area, while Pheropsophus jessoensis, Synuchus nitidus, Synuchus cycloderus, and Chlaenius naeviger were dominant at the border of the National Park and adjacent to the road or grassland. These differences of dominant species also affected to the similarity of species composition between core and border area, and caused increasing dissimilarities between sites with cluster analysis. Although the result of the present study was a case study using ground beetles, it will be helpful to develop a management strategy of biodiversity conservation in Naejangsan National Park and its surroundings.

White-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is known as a long-range migratory pest in Asia. Although exact primary source of S. furcifera in Korea remains unknown. We used twelve microsatellite markers (SSR) to analyze the population genetic structure of the pest. We collected S. furcifera from Asia in 2012 (Korea, Laos, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam and four different sites of Bangladesh), 2013 (China, Nepal, Thailand, two different sites of Bangladesh, and fifteen different sites of Korea), and 2014 (four different sites of China and ten different sites of Korea). To verify the genetic variance, we used STRUCTURE program to obtain structure analysis of K and K showed in three components in genetic clustering. Result in sample 2012, similar genetic structure showed in Korea and Vietnam. In 2013 and 2014, various genetic structure revealed in different sites of Korea and Asian population genetic structure appeared as on large panmictic population. Furthermore, we tested migration pathway to see the probable source and reciplent populations of first generation migrants in S. furcifera. In 2012, Laos, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam and four different sites of Bangladesh showed the potential source of S. furcifera. In 2013, we observed S. furcifera in Korea was more likely originated from Nepal and Bangladesh. Various migration pathway showed in fifteen different sites of Korea as panmictic population. Lastly in 2014, the migration pathway indicated that S. furcifera migrates from China to Korea. Seemingly, S. furcifera in Asia display as large panmictic population and more study is acquire to verify the origin source.

This studies was conducted to define community structure and diversity of epigeal spiders in apple orchards under different farming practices (organic and conventional). In 11 commercial apple orchards, epigeal spider community structure was investigated during 2012-2014 (3 orchards, 2012; 3 orchards, 2013, 5 orchards, 2014). Epigeal spiders were collected by pitfall traps from April to October, 2012 in Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do; 2013 in Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do; 2014 in Cheongsong-gun and Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. Sampled spiders were identified to the species level. Biodiversity was analyzed with species richness (total numbers of spider species), abundance (total numbers of individuals) and Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H΄) for each site and compared between organic and conventional orchards. In all regions, abundance of the spider communities were relatively higher in organic orchards than in conventional orchards. But, no significant difference in species richness and specie diversity (H΄) between organic and conventional orchards. Lycosidae was the most dominant family in all orchards regardless farming practices. However, Linyphiidae dominated in organic orchards only. The most dominant species were Pardosa laura (Lycosidae), Erigone koshiensis (Linyphiidae) in organic, Piratula procurvus (Lycosidae) in conventional orchards.

To identify the key effects of human disturbance on terrestrial ecosystems is a major issue in the contemporary conservation. We compared the community structure of ground beetles among different forest patch sizes according to the different forest types. In addition, we examined how different functional groups and species responded to patch size, and habitat and geographical variables. We sampled ground beetles in 9 continuous forests and 18 patches including 6 deciduous, 6 Korean pine, and 6 Japanese red pine. Ground beetles were collected using 5 pitfall traps in each site, and replaced every month during May to October in 2013. Individual-based rarefaction curves indicated that higher species richness was found in continuous forests than forest patches irrespective of the forest types. Positive relationships were found between forest patch size and species richness of each functional group associated with forest habitat. When all patch size, geographical, and habitat variables were considered simultaneously for multiple regressions, patch size, longitude, latitude, elevation, organic matter, and litter depth were generally selected as significant predictor variables of the abundance and species richness of forest specialists, brachypterous, dimorphic, and large-bodied species, although longitude was only selected as a best predictor for 27 study sites in MRT. In conclusion, decreasing patch size is a major factor to the loss of biodiversity for ground beetles. To reduce biodiversity loss caused by habitat fragmentation, therefore, protecting as large as old-growth forests and improving habitat quality are critical for the biodiversity conservation and enhancement.

Under field conditions, we investigated how transgenic Bt cabbage expressing the insecticidal Cry1Ac1 protein affects two target Lepidoptera species — Plutella xylostella (Plutellidae) and Pieris rapae (Pieridae) — as well as the structure of the local non-target arthropod community. When exposed to Bt cabbage line C30, Plutella xylostella and Pieris rapae were significantly less abundant than when in the presence of the non-transgenic control. Multivariate analyses (PerMANOVA and NMDS) showed that composition of the non-target arthropod community was affected by sampling date but not by cabbage genotype. These results suggest that transgenic cabbage expressing Cry1Ac1 protein can be effective in controlling Plutella xylostella and Pieris rapae in the field and that cultivation of this cabbage may not adversely affect such non-target arthropod communities.

In Korea, in 1970s and 1980s a few research for biological control program was conducted mostly for agricultural field crop and forest insect pests. Since 1990s when the greenhouse cultivation area increased significantly and the insect pest problem thereby increased highly, the needs for practical biological control program for greenhouse pests increased accordingly. In 1990s especially when Tetranychus urticae in strawberry, Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Liriomyza bryoniae in cucumber and tomato, and Aphis gossypii in cucumber became a major problem, demand for use of commercially produced biological control agents such as Phytoseiulus persimilis, Encasia formosa, and Aphidius colemani increase rapidly but these commercially available biological control agents in foreign countries were not allowed to be imported at that time. Therefore, temporary pilot study for application these natural enemies began in mid 1990s by the National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology, RDA and some provincial agricultural extension center. The greenhouse biological control research and natural enemy industry began to flourish when 7 species of exotic biological control agents were officially permitted for import in 2003 and the promotion program for horticultural insect pest management using natural enemies was implemented from 2005. Unfortunately, when this promotion program was terminated in 2010 the Korean natural enemy industry began to collapse and also biological control research activity decreased significantly. In this presentation, past and current status of the biological control research activity and natural enemy industry in Korea will be addressed and the future perspective will be cautiously discussed.

Transgenic lines of insect resistant cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) expressing Cry1Ac1 protein has been developed to control diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella). The potential adverse effects of Bt crops on non-target arthropod herbivores and predators are major concerns. We conducted a tritrophic bioassay to study the ecological impacts of insecticidal transgenic cabbage on the wolf spider (Pardosa astrigera), a non-target generalist predator. First, we measured the levels of Cry1Ac1 proteins in fruit flies that were fed with the transgenic cabbage as well as those levels in the wolf spiders preying on the Bt cabbage-fed fruit flies using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Cry1Ac1 proteins were detected in the Bt cabbage fed fruit flies and also in the wolf spiders after preying on Bt cabbage-fed fruit flies. Second, we compared the life history characteristics of the wolf spiders preying on the Bt or non-Bt cabbage. Growth, development time and survival of the wolf spiders were not significantly different between Bt and non-Bt cabbage. Although the wolf spiders were exposed to Cry1Ac1 protein via feeding on the preys containing Cry1Ac1 proteins, their growth and survival was not significantly affected.

This study was conducted to investigate the community structure and species distribution of ground beetle assemblages in western part of Yeongwol-gun, Korea. Ground beetles were collected by pitfall traps from 9 study sites during July to October in 2013. A total of 30 species were identified from 4,439 collected ground beetles. Two dominant species, Synuchus nitidus (1,916 individuals) and Synuchus cycloderus (1,900 individuals) were occupied 85.8% of total. Interestingly, Pterostichus orientalis orientalis and Synuchus melantho were only collected in relative high altitude above 350 m, such as Beopheung-ri, Unhak-ri, and Yongseok-ri. Large-sized beetles, such as Damaster, Leptocarabus, and Carabus species, were generally more collected from Suju-myeon (Beopheung-ri and Unhak-ri) and Jucheon-myeon (Docheon-ri and Yongseok-ri) as well-conserved area, but not occurred in Yeongwol-eup and Hanbando-myeon, which forests may have lower habitat quality for these species. These differences also lead to increasing of dissimilarity among study sites, which were diverged into 3 groups at 53.0% of similarity. In particular, species composition of Samok-ri was significantly different at 8.2% of similarity because of difference in habitat characteristics as river side. This study has an important value to provide the fundamental information of inventory and monitoring in Yeongwol-gun. For detail mapping of species distribution in Yeongwol-gun, however, further studies are necessary, especially eastern parts of Yeongwol-gun.

White-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), has been a serious migratory pest in Korea. It is important to figure out the migration route and gene flow of S. furcifera. Microsatellite marker (SSR) shows high efficiency as molecular markers. Unfortunately, various microsatellite marker of S. furcifera has not been developed to see genetic diversity. S. furcifera samples were collected from Vietnam, Laos and three different sites of Bangladesh in 2012. We extracted DNA by using QIAamp DNA Mini Kit and ran next generation DNA sequencer (NGS) Roche 454 to develop a new microsatellite marker. Roughly, about 18 singleton primers and 14 contigs primers were found. We will test these primers with S. fucifera DNA samples, and figure out the accurate new microstatellite marker.

Selecting surrogated species is the first step for environmental risk assessment of GM crop on non-target arthropods. To select surrogated species considering the domestic environment, we surveyed the arthropod fauna in five main localities (Changnyeong-gun in Gyeongsangnam-do, Goesan-gun in Chungcheongbuk-do, Gokseong-gun in Jeollanam-do, Hongcheon-gun in Gangwon-do and Hwaseong-si in Gyeonggi-do) in which maize was cultivated with large scale. Maize is one of the main imported GM crop in Korea. Arthropods were surveyed with yellow sticky traps and pitfall traps from May to August with a week interval considering the crop growing season in 2012 and 2013. A total of 135 species of 51 families in 13 orders were identified from the 17,470 arthropods. Six orders (Coleoptera, Araneae, Hemiptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera) were dominant in species richness and three orders (Collembola, Thysanoptera and Diptera) in abundance, representing 84% and 86% of the total, respectively. In the composition of fuctional guilds, herbivore group was the most dominant followed by predator group occupying 40% and 37% of the total abundance.

Rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker is a significant rice insect pest. A newly hatched larva bores a hole into the rice stem and feeding inside. The damage results in drying and white heads of rice. Climate change will affect pest and its host population dynamics variously. In this study, the degree of asynchrony between emergence of rice stem borer and rice transplanting was examined by their phenology models. Also, correlation was examined between winter mortalities of the rice stem borer and relative humidity categorized by daily minimum temperature in 12 sites throughout the country from 1992 to 2013. The degree of asynchrony appears to be increased in future climate condition. And we found a negative correlation between winter mortality and the relative humidity. Winter mortality will be decreased in the future because of increasing winter minimum temperature and snowfall. We hypothesize that the stem borer may increasingly harbor in alternative hosts such as reed in its first generation and move to rice in the second generation. Currently the simulation study is being conducted to verify this hypothesis.

In recent, habitat fragmentation is one of the major factors to threat to biodiversity loss, because habitat fragmentation caused by urbanization and land-use change affect reducing of habitat amount and changing of environmental condition. In particular, increasing of forest edges by habitat fragmentation cause changing of microclimate and distribution of organisms in forest. This study was conducted to examine the distributional patterns of ground beetle assemblages along forestedge- crop gradients in Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do. We selected 8 study sites as line gradients from forest interior to crop (+80m, +40m, +20m, 0m, -20m, -40m, -80m). Ground beetles were collected by pitfall traps from May to October in 2012. A total of 61 species were identified from 3,739 collected beetles. Species richness was the highest at forest edge (GLM with Tukey’s test, F6, 49=2.56, P=0.031). Although abundance was higher at both forest interior and edge, but not showed statistical significance (F6, 49=2.06, P=0.076). Species composition of forest interiors were significantly different from forest exteriors (crops) by non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and cluster analysis with similarity profile test (SIMPROF), while forest edges showed intermediate characteristics. Although our study sites may not represent the overall Korean forest, we confirmed that forest edges are important habitats for generalists and open-habitat species as well as forest specialists. In conclusion, management of both forest edge and its surroundings are needed to conserve biodiversity in forest,

Environmental changes such as land-use change including reclamation cause effects on the ecosystem seriously. Present study investigated community structure of hemipterans in several reclaimed lands from western coast of South Korea in 2010, because among arthropods, hemipterans are more influenced by land-use change which caused the change of dominant plants. Six reclaimed lands were selected for our study based on the ages of reclaimed land (0, 5, 12, 16, 20, and 31 years). Dominant plant species of reclaimed lands were belonging to Poaceae, Phragmites communis and Oryza sativa in Yeongsangan II, Sabkyocheon, Geumgan I and Gyehwado, Secale cereale in Seokmun, and Imperata cylindrica and Calamagrostis epigeios in Sihwa. A total of 31 species in 10 families were identified from 4475 collected hemipterans. In Sihwa, Shannon’s diversity was very low compared to other 5 reclaimed lands due to dominance of Paromius exiguus. Because I. cylindrica and C. epigeios were 1st and 2nd host plants of P. exiguus (2824 individuals only collected from Sihwa). In multivariate analysis, 6 reclaimed lands grouped into 2 major groups showing 49.8% in Bray-Curtis similarity between 2 groups. From these results, land-use change such as reclamation project may cause the outbreak of insect pests by destruction of ecosystem functions and simplification of plant community, although community structure of hemipterans may be stable over age of land reclamation.
