        Thrips palmi Karny was introduced and first recorded in 1993 in Korea. This species has become a serious pest of vegetable and ornamental crops. CLIMEX simulation was applied to T. palmi to predict the potential geographic distribution in Korea under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 climate change scenario. In the CLIMEX simulation, ecoclimatic index (EI) was calculated, and compared in each simulated year and each simulated location. The map comparisons showed a good agreement between simulated and present distributions of T. palmi, indicating that the CLIMEX model was well explained and appropriate for prediction of future distributions of this species in Korea. In near future, until a year of 2020, all the western and eastern parts of Korea showed favorable to marginal suitability for T. palmi populations in fields. After the year of 2040, the potential distributions are shifted from no persistent to favorable for establishment and persistence from coastal to interior of the Korean peninsula except a north-eastern interior region which is the northernmost part of high mountains (Baekdu-Daegan) area in South Korea. Based on simulation results, T. palmi would overcome its weather restriction in near future under a severe climate change scenario, thus, pest management measures and strategies should be re-constructed in Korea, with further studies including interspecific competition and understanding ecosystem change due to climate change.

        This study designed a “Diagnostic Model for Management Innovation of Medium Enterprises” based on the theoretical background of success factor and management diagnosis model for management innovation of medium enterprises and suggested a measure for utilization of strategic subject and diagnostic model that enterprises can apply. Utilization of medium enterprises management innovation diagnostic model designed through this study would be of help for making a diagnosis of the capability maturity level of enterprises’ current management system and improving it by establishing a challenging capability objective and building a circulation system capable of innovating enterprises. It is expected for enterprises to overcome growing pains and establish a management system capable of achieving outcome (productivity) by repeating measurement and innovation through management diagnosis. In addition, this study provides a method to produce a strategic subject, select priority of implementation and prepare an implementation road map by classifying and filtering management issues produced as a result of management diagnosis in a systematic way. If variables necessary for production of an objective weighted value of scoring and discover of elements for category of diagnostic model and elementary items as well as design of a self-diagnosis questionnaire, measurement of management outcome suggested in this study can be able to be verified and supplemented through case study in the future, it is expected to make the degree of completion as a diagnostic model elevated that may help for growth and development through innovation of medium enterprises.

        본 연구는 농촌진흥청 국립축산과학원에서 사육중인 제주재래돼지와 랜드레이스의 상호교차교배를 통해 생산된 417두의 F2집단을 대상으로 성장형질(생시체중, 3주령 체중, 10주령 체중, 20주령 체중)을 측정하고, 개체별 혈액으로부터 Illumina Porcine SNP 60k BeadChip을 이용하여 유전자형 분석을 실시하여 성장형질과 유전체 전장의 단일염기다형의 유전자형 간에 연관성을 알아보았다. 단일연기다형의 유전자형 분석은 돼지의 성염색체를 제외한 18개의 상염색체 내에 나타난 52,574개의 SNP표지인자 중다형성이 나타나지 않은 7,564개의 표지인자, 모든 개체에서 이형으로 나타난 47개 표지인자 및 결측률이 10 % 이상인 1,830개의 표지인자가 나타나 분석에 앞서 사전 제거를 실시하였으며, 남은 44,133개의 표지인자를 체중형질과 표지인자간 연관성 분석하는데 이용하였다. 체중에 영향하는 고정효과에 대해 일반선형모형을 설정하여 사전 보정을 실시하였으며, 여기서 얻어진 잔차값을 이용하여 표지인자와 월령별 체중간의 연관성 분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과 전장의 유전체 정보 중 통계적 판단의 오류를 고려하여 연관성이 강한(p <10-6)표지인자가 생시(BWB), 3주령(BW3), 10주령(BW10) 및 20주령(BW20) 체중에서 각각 657개, 846개, 49개, 122개로 추정되었다. 생시와 3주령 체중에 공통으로 유의적 영향을 하는 표지인자가 286개로 나타났으며, BWB와 BW10에서 5개, BWB와 BW20에서 8개, BW3와 BW10에서 13개, BW3과 BW20에서 11개, BW10과 BW20에서 1개로 나타났다. 또한 염색체별 성장형질에 영향하는 표지인자의 분포를 조사한 결과, 주령별 체중에 영향하는 표지인자는 전장의 유전체에 고르게 분포하는 것으로 조사되었으며, 특히 생시 및 3주령 체중에 영향하는 표지인자는 특정 염색체(SSC9)에서 고도의 통계적 유의차(p <10-15)를 나타내는 유전자 좌위가 있는 것으로 추정되었다.

        In apple orchards under different farming practices (organic and conventional), arthropod community structure was investigated. Arthropods were collected with pitfall traps, band traps, yellow sticky traps and pheromone traps from May to December, 2012 in Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. Biodiversity was analyzed with species richness and Shannon diversity index (H΄). Sampled arthropods were identified 37 families in 14 orders from 21,618 individuals in organic orchard-1 and 33 families in 10 orders from 11,318 individuals in organic orchard-2 and 35 families in 13 orders from 27,711 individuals in conventional orchard. Species richness was relatively highest in organic orchard-1, intermediate in conventional orchard and lowest in organic orchard-2. In ecologically functional group, abundance of pests was higher in conventional orchard than in organic orchards due to the high occurrence of Phyllonorycte ringoniella (Gracillariidae) and Lyonetia prunifoliella (Lyonetiidae). Organic orchards showed higher abundance, species richness and species diversity of epigeic predators and those of parasitoids above ground than conventional orchard. Abundance of detritivores, mainly collembola, were higher in organic orchard than in conventional orchard.

        The developmental time of immature stages of Paromius exiguus (Distant) was studied at eight different constant temperatures (17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5, 30, 32.5 and 35°C) with a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h on two host plants, Imperata cylinderica and Calamagrostis epigeios. On both host plants, the developmental time decreased with increasing temperatures. A significant difference in the developmental times was observed between two host plants for each nymphal stage and for the total nymphal stage as well. For completion of the total nymphal stage, the development time at 17.5 and 35°C were 69.6 and 16.6 days on I. cylinderica and 38.6 and 13.8 days on C. epigeios, respectively. The relationship between developmental rate and temperature was fitted to a linear regression model and the six nonlinear models (Lactin 1, Lactin 2, Briere 1, Briere 2, Logan 6 and Taylor). Except for the Taylor model, all of the five nonlinear models fitted the data for the total nymphal stage of the current study well, according to the high r2 value, on both host plants. The distribution of completion of each development stage was well described by the two-parameter Weibull function.

        Paromius exiguus (Distant, 1883) is a serious insect pest in rice field adjacent to reclaimed land. They suck young ear of rice causing empty head of grain or pecky rice grain. During 2010 to 2012, we conducted to investigate the host-plant change of P. exiguus in Siwha reclaimed land, Hwaseong-si. In 2012, we also studied dispersal ability of P. exiguus from reclaimed land to adjacent rice fields. In early May, the adults aggregated on the grain parts of cogon grass (Imperata cylindrica) (Poales: Poaceae) after overwintering, and laid their eggs and nymphs developed into adults on the same host plants from middle May to late June. Second generation was observed at wood small-reed (Calamagrostis epigeios) (Poales: Poaceae) from late June to late July. At shooting stage of rice, adults moved to adjacent rice fields and third generation might be started. Although dispersal ability of adult of P. exiguus penetrated about 10 km into inland areas of Hwaseong-si, number of individuals of P. exiguus population was significantly declined with increasing distance from reclaimed land (Pearson’s correlation coefficient, r=-0.7357, p<0.0001). Unfortunately, further studies on population dynamics of P. exiguus in rice fields could not investigated, because pesticides were widely sprayed by aerial application in 14 August, 2012. Nevertheless, this results will be a useful information for management and control of P. exiguus in rice fields adjacent to reclaimed land.

        Food web of main arthorpods in 3 differently managed rice fields (low input, duck, apple snail farming) was investigated in Hongseong area, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. Main arthropods were selected by their abundance during the rice growing season in 2010. Food web was analyzed with stable isotope, δ15N and δ13C according to rice growth satges (seedling, tillering, booting, blooming/heading, and ripening stage). Rates of δ15N and δ13C in soil (F=5.72; df=2, 6; P=0.0407, F=40.86; df=2, 6; P=0.0003, respectively) and δ13C in rice (F=6.46; df=2, 6; P=0.0319) were statistically different. Rate of δ13C in Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus (F=9.50; df=2, 6; P=0.0138), Pirata subpiraticus (F=11.00; df=2, 6; P=0.0098), and Pachygnatha clercki (F=6.33; df=2, 6; P=0.0333) were statistically different among farming methods. Stable isotope structures in food web were slightly different among 3 farming methods seasonally. Rates of δ15N and δ13C of rice pests such as Nephotettix cincticeps, Nilaparvata lugens, Laodelphax striatellus, and Sogatella furcifera were related to rice plant. Those of Tomoceridae sp. and Chironomidae sp., however, were not related to rice plant. Spiders as main natural enemy group were ranked on the top of food web and were thought to have life cycle based on the rice field from stable isotope structure.

        To assess effects of Bt rice expressing a synthetic Cry1Ac1 gene for control Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenee) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), we conducted laboratory tests to evaluate the potential impacts of Bt rice on non-target herbivore, non-target pollen-feeder and non-target predator. Also we investigated the community structure of arthropods in Bt and non-Bt rice fields during the rice-growing season in 2007 and 2008. There were no significant differences in development, survival and emergence of non-target herbivores, non-target pollen-feeder and non-target predators between Bt and non-Bt rice although tibia length of non-target predators with BPH feeding on Bt rice showed significantly longer than in non-Bt rice. In 2-year field study, a total of 43 familes in 10 orders were identified from 64,099 collected insects and a total of 29 species in 23 genera and 9 families were identified from 4,937 collected spiders. Abundance, Shannon’s index and family richness in insects and species richness in spiders were very similar between Bt and non-Bt rice for 2 years and there was no significant difference. The results indicated that the transgenic Cry1Ac rice tested in this study had no adverse effects on the rice insect and spider community structure in field condition and on the development, survival, emergence and adult fitness parameter of non-target arthropods in the laboratory conditions.

        We investigated the spatial distribution of ground beetle species from the edge of secondary forests in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. Nine secondary forests were selected, and 81 pitfall traps for collecting ground beetles were placed along forest interior―forest edge―forest exterior gradients during 14 June to 9 November, 2011. A total of 32 species belonging to 13 genera of 8 subfamilies were identified from 3710 collected ground beetles. Ten dominant species were selected for analysis. Five species such as Chlaenius micans (ANOVA, with Tukey's test, F2, 78=3.11, P=0.0502), Chlaenius ocreatus (F2, 78=2.76, P=0.0692), Dolichus halensis halensis (F2, 78=9.80, P=0.0002), Harpalus eous (F2, 78=2.73, P=0.0712), and Harpalus tridens (F2, 78=6.74, P=0.0020) were abundant at forest exterior. Three species such as Synuchus cycloderus (F2, 78=7.91, P=0.0007), Synuchus nitidus (F2, 78=9.72, P=0.0002), and Synuchus sp.1 (F2, 78=4.50, P=0.0142) were abundant at forest edge and forest interior. Coptolabrus smaragdinus branickii (F2, 78=3.24, P=0.0444) was abundant at forest edge and exterior. Finally, Chlaenius naeviger (F2, 78=1.39, P=0.2542) showed a wide distribution in this study. This study showed a significant edge effect on dominant ground beetles. Many environmental variables and prey items may be important factors for the spatial pattern of ground beetles. Because forest edges are generally important for many predaceous arthropods including ground beetles, the conservation and management of forest edges are important for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem functions.

        This study was conducted to examine the community structure of ground beetles between coniferous and deciduous forest in rural landscapes along latitudinal gradient, such as Miryang-si, Yeongdong-gun, Icheon-si, and Cheolwon-gun from April to October in 2009. A total of 19 species belonging to 15 genera of 9 subfamilies were identified from 6,253 collected ground beetles. Between forest stands, 14 species belonging to 10 genera of 7 subfamilies were identified from 2,874 ground beetles in coniferous forests and 14 species belonging to 11 genera of 7 subfamilies were identified from 3,379 ground beetles in deciduous forests. Dominant species from 4 regions were Synuchus nitidus (59.4% of total) and Synuchus cyloderus (28.5%) respectively. Analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) showed no difference between forest stands, but it was significantly different among regions. Non-metric multidimensional scaling showed that 8 study sites were divergence to 2 major groups between Miryang-si and the others. Overall, community structure of ground beetles showed no difference between forest stands. In conclusion, rural forests is being discussed about important role in biodiversity conservation such as refuge from human activity, and thus, studies on the community structure of ground beetles in the rural forests will be important to manage the biodiversity in agricultural landscapes, because ground beetles are well known for general predator groups in the ecosystems.

        Community structure of ground beetles in Seokmun- and Siwha-reclaimed lands was investigated with pitfall traps from 21 May to 1 November, 2010. Survey areas were divided by the status of reclamation, vegetation, and flooding frequency. Status of the Seokmun-reclaimed land in Chungcheongnam-do is the progress of conversion to rice paddy after completion, and then dominant plant is Secale cereals. For the Siwha reclaimed land in Gyeonggi-do, reclamation is ongoing, and thus Imperata cylindrica and Calamagrostis pigeios are dominant plants. Flooding was more frequent in Seokmun than in Siwha as 4 times and none, respectively. A total of 3,352 epigeic insects of 9 orders and 22,981 epigeic insects of 9 orders were collected from the Seokmun- and Siwha-reclaimed land, respectively. Collembola was the most abundant in each site. In ground beetle assemblage, 11 species belonging to 7 subfamilies Seokmun and 8 species belonging to 5 subfamilies in Siwha were identified from 183 and 101 collected ground beetles. Chlaenius pallipes (107 individuals, 58.5%) and Pheropsophus javanus (52 individuals, 28.4%) was dominant in Seokmun, while Harplus jureceki (37 individuals, 36.6%), Synuchus arcuaticollis (17 individuals, 16.8%), and Dolichus halensis halensis (17 individuals, 16.8%) was dominant in Siwha. The Shannon's index value was 1.147 and 1.671 in Seokmun and Siwha, respectively. Similarity by the Sørensen index between Seokmun and Siwha was 0.3158. In conclusion, community structure and seasonality of ground beetles were significantly different between two reclaimed lands, and this difference appears to be due to their different habitat conditions such as flooding frequency and progress of reclamation.

        Field studies were conducted to assess potential effects of transgenic rice expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) CryIAc1 protein, which is highly effective the rice leafroller, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, on the rice insect community in 2007 and 2008. Insects were sampled in non-Bt and Bt rice plots with a sweep net and a suction devise. A total of 64,256 individuals in 45 families and 11 orders (30,860 individuals in 43 families and 11 orders in the Bt-rice plots, and 33,396 individuals in 40 families and 11 order in the non-Bt rice plots) were captured and grouped by ecological functional guilds. Species diversity and richness were not significantly different between Bt-rice and non-Bt rice plots. The seasonal pattern of the insect community and the seasonal population fluctuation of insects were very similar between two plots. Collectively, the rice insect community was not influenced by the Bt-rice in the present study.

        Cold hardiness is an important trait for insects, that enables them to survive during the winter and develop in the next season, and to extend their range. Lycorma delicatula (White), which became an important sporadic pest in grapevines and some other fruit trees, has spread rapidly to the most of regions in South Korea. This study was conducted to determine the cold hardiness of overwintered L. delicatula eggs according to geographical variation. We collected overwintering eggs in the five sites, Chuncheon, Suwon, Yeongdong, Gunsan, Daegu, on 22~25th Feb. in 2011. We treated eggs to combinations of different temperatures (-15℃, -20℃, -25℃) and exposure time (12hr, 24hr, 3days, 5days, 7days) after chilling them for 24~26 days at 5℃. And then, they were kept in the room temperature. We only analysed three sites of Suwon, Gunsan and Daegu, because of very low hatching rate at Chuncheon and Yeongdong. There were significant effects of time (F=36.97 d.f.=4 P<0.0001), sites (F=17.28 d.f.=2 P<0.0001), and the interaction of time and temperature (F=5.77 d.f.=5 P<0.0001) at -15℃. At -20℃, eggs hatched only at 12hr and 24hr of exposure treatment. All eggs treated at -25℃ failed to hatch. It appears that -25℃ is around the critical temperature.

        Effectiveness of Encarsia formosa (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) to control Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) was investigated in the commercial tomato greenhouse from January to June, 2010. Densities of T. vaporariorum were monitored using the yellow sticky trap for adult, and a lupe (x10) for 4th instar nymph and pupa at 1 week interval. Tomato seedlings were transplanted in mid-January and the nymph and adult of T. vaporariorum were first discovered in February 4th. E. formosa was applied as a mummy card at a recommended density (3 parasitoids per 1m2) at 2 weeks interval for 8 times. Mummy cards were collected 2 weeks later and the emergence and survival ratio of E. formosa were examined. Density of adult T. vaporariorum was significantly lower in the treatment plot (F=42.48, p=0.0001). The control efficiency ranged from 57.3% to 88.5%. The nymphal density was also significantly lower in the treatment plot (F=8.85, p=0.0053). The control efficiency was 84% on 25th March, 75% on 18th May and 95% on 25th May. Maximum 50% parasitism by E. formosa occurred in the treatment plot. The emergence and survival rates of E. formosa on mummy cardboards that were released in the greenhouse during February to March were only 53% and 41%, respectively. These rates increased to >70% as the temperature rises.

        two different sizes of yellow sticky traps (small trap: 9.6×8.0cm; large trap: 9.6×16cm) for sampling greenhouse whitefly (GHWF), Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), adults in four commercial cherry tomato greenhouses. The patch size of GHWF immatures between plants was also estimated using visual counts. Two variogram models were fitted to the empirical variograms developed from the data collected by each sampling method. All the variograms reached the sill indicating the presence of spatial dependence among the spatial data obtained by the two sampling methods. For GHWF adults on sticky traps the range of variogram (a measure of attractive distance) was not different between the two trap sizes. This result indicated that the attractive distances of the two different yellow sticky traps were very similar. The ranges of the variograms for the visual count of immatures on plants were always less than those for adults, indicating that the attractive distance of the traps for GHWF adults extends beyond the patch size for immatures on cherry tomato plants. These data have implications for developing sampling plans for the management of GHWF in tomato greenhouses.

        We studied to develop a forecasting model to predict the hatching time of overwintered eggs of Lycorma delicatula. We collected overwintering egg masses on 1st February, 17th February and 4th March. After chilling them at 5℃ for 15 days, development of eggs was investigated at six constant temperature (35, 31, 27, 23, 19, 15℃). The hatching rate of egg was highest at 23℃ (87.88±19.32%) followed by 19℃ (87.71±21.47%), 27℃ (75.96±24.82%), and 31℃ (30.92±24.81%). Eggs did not survive at 35℃. The developmental duration of eggs was 39.47±2.24, 22.96±3.25, 17.56±1.58 and 12.15±6.29, at 19, 23, 27 and 31℃, respectively. The egg developmental rate was described with a linear model (eq. Y=0.0034X-0.0364 (r=0.9649)) between 19℃ and 31℃. The lower developmental threshold temperature was 10.71℃ and effective accumulated temperature for egg development was 286.40 Degree days.

        Strawberry, Fragaria ananassa Duchesne, is one of the important horticultural crops cultivated in greenhouses. Tetranychus urticae is one of major strawberry pests, and Neoseiulus californicus and Phytoseiulus persimilis have been used as biological control agents for control of T. urticae. The interactions between T. urticae and N. californicus and between T. urticae and P. persimilis were investigated to compare their control efficiency for T. urticae on a spatially-structured strawberry leaf disc area at different temperatures and on different treatments. The experimental arena was an array of leaf discs (3 cm diameter) placed upside down on a water-saturated cotton pad in an aluminum pan (17.4 x 21.5 cm). Twenty leaf discs (4 x 5) were placed adjacent each other for allowing dispersal of T. urticae and its predatory mites. The temperature conditions were 20, 25, and 30°C and there were six different treatments. The overall population densities of T. urticae were influenced by temperature (20, 25, and 30°C) in N. californicus treatment. In the same temperature condition, P.persimilis was more effective than N. californicus to control T. uritcae. Two predator systems were better than one predator systems to suppress the population density of T. urticae at 25°C. Some results of this study could be used to understand the spatial association of T. urticae and its predatory mites in greenhouse crops and fields.

        To find out the effect of global warming (long-term air temperature change) on insect population, we developed long-term monitoring program for Scotinophara lurida (Burmeister) and Paromius exiguus (Distant). The monitoring programs for these target insects are consisted of two main areas; Field monitoring and modelling of long-term population change. For the field monitoring, we conduct the survey of target insects on host plants, light trap monitoring, overwintering habitat sampling, and the monitoring of daily air temperature change. The field monitorings has been conducted for 10 and 4 years for S. lurida and P. exiguus, respectively. For the modelling of long-term population change, we have already developed basic phenology models for both insects. The developed phenology models are validated using yearly field sampling data and air temperature data. Environmental factors which could affect the populations of target insects are studied in laboratory to find out the magnitude of the effects. Based on the basic phenology models and parameters for newly found factors, long term population dynamics models for both insects will be developed.
