Shin, Yu-Ri. 2015. “Nonverbal Discourse Strategies of Korean TV Talk Show Hosts: Focus on ‘Nodding’ and ‘Bending’”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 23(1). 115~143. As our speech builds on verbal as well as nonverbal elements, we perform discourse strategies through both of them in interaction. This study takes a closer look at the nonverbal strategies performed during talk show discourse as seen on Korean television. By taking into account the sociocultural context on which both talk show hosts and guests mutually rely in their interaction, the paper examines how this shared pool of sociocultural resources affects the discourse strategies of the hosts. This holds particularly true for Korean TV talk shows, since the social relationships, from which the discourse participants draw, is defined and reflected in the shows' semi-institutional character. Throughout the show, the host makes use of nodding and bending on an interpersonal, semantic, and structural level. In this order, such discursive functional devices serve a distinct politeness strategies and can, therefore, be determined as discursive strategies.

Nam, Sin-Hye. 2015. “The Discourse Functions of Code Switching on SNS texts : focusing on the case of Facebook”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 23(1). 31~53. This study aims to figure out the discourse functions of code switching which appears in the texts posted on SNS, especially Facebook. In order to satisfy this purpose, this study observed and analysed several individual timeline pages whose owners have a plural language background, but live in a monolingual society. The results are as follows. First, a lot of code switching examples appeared in the observed texts, even though the writer lived in a monolingual society. Second, the unmarked code of the individual writers was their mother language and it was chosen when the posting was about the writer's everyday life and appeared as a longer passage. Third, when the writers chose their marked code, they had at least four particular reasons that were related to discourse functions; including or excluding a particular reader, using more effective words, emphasizing or watering down the implications of the text, and changing the speech act or topic. Finally, these results show that the community on SNS is closer to a plural lingual society rather than a closed monolingual community. On SNS, the users act as if they live in a multi lingual space and perform as plural linguals, although, in the reality, they live in a very monolingual society. And this is one of the important characteristics of a SNS discourse community.

Im Sun-hee and Kim Sun-hoi. 2014. A study on the discourse marker functions of “ye/ne” in Korean through analyzing the Sejong Corpus. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 22(1). The expressions called discourse markers universally have three shared features, that is, connectivity, optionality, and non-truth-conditionality (Schourup 1999). Kim (1989), Lee (1993), and Kang (2009) have shown that the expressions “ye/ne” in Korean have the propositional meaning in some cases, but exhibit these features in other cases. Based on these previous studies, where the various functions of “ye/ne” were classified, this paper investigates, focusing on their discourse marker functions, the function-based frequencies of “ye/ne” occurring in the spoken component of the Sejong Corpus. From this investigation, the following results are derived: First, “ye/ne” is used much more frequently as a discourse marker than as a propositional meaning form, second, their most frequently used function is a back-chaneling one, and last but not least, “ye/ne” is also used within a speaker’s turn very frequently and “ye/ne” in these cases is not used for responding to another's utteran

The aim of this study is to discuss the attributes of political discourse in political advertisements. The materials of the study are the advertisements used by candidates in the 16th and 17th Korean presidential elections. Presidential election advertising is the social practice of competing in political discourse on who is more proper for the presidency. The upper level of discourse in advertisement takes on the narrative of statements directed at the public, but argumentation about political assertions is included in it. The core of the argumentation asserts support for the candidate and backs such an assertion. A story that dramatizes the details related to the candidate or his/her policy has a big effect of gaining sympathy for the message, but on the other hand it can also lead to criticism that political issues are being dealt with only through images rather than language. Narrative, complexly constructed through spoken language, visual images, subtitles, sounds and other channels, accordingly contains various messages, but it has a strong impact ultimately by being condensed into one symbolic rhetoric, since the candidate's personality, political message, and the power to realize these-that is, all the factors the public considers in making a political choice-are included in it.

Kim, Hyun-kang. Lee, Yun-jin 2013. Analysis on the elements and properties of the discourse in the main text of Korean textbooks. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 21(1). This paper analyzes the elements and properties of the discourse in the main text of Korean textbooks. The main text conveys ‘discourse knowledge’ that constitutes the communicative competence of Korean language on the basis of the fundamental properties of discourse rather than on unnatural sentences and conversations constructed only to present vocabulary and grammar. It consists of ‘discourse type’, ‘background knowledge’, ‘language use’, and ‘conversation organization’. As a result of this research, we found that the main text contains the following properties of discourse. First, the main text whose discourse type students frequently encounter is selected and language befitting that type is used. Second, the background knowledge of the discourse is presented. Third, the conversation of the main text is organized with the turn-taking system. The characteristics as a textbook are also taken into account in the main texts that we reviewed. These comprise dealing with limited discourse patterns, regulating language use, and the regular and restricted turn-taking system. The above analysis shows that the main text is constructed utilizing both aspects of education and discourse. The findings of this study will be helpful for textbook users in developing instruction and studying strategies and for textbook developers in constructing main texts.

In this study, the symbols and visual expressions employed in the food culture content of official website designed to promote three cities in Korea, Seoul, Jeonju and Jeju, were subjected to semiotic analysis. In this study, it was assumed that these websites reflected the varying perspectives of the people behind the development and management of these routes of Internet communication, and the semiotic choices made in order to exemplify each city’s food cultural image. The aim of the study was to analyze the communication strategies of food cultural branding in the terms of the online content regarding Seoul, Jeonju, and Jeju with a focus on the comparative points in these cities’ official websites. This study included conducting semiotic content analyses of the aforementioned cities’ official web pages in an attempt to determine the food branding strategies used to differentiation and produce more favorable perceptions of these three cities. Building upon the findings drawn from this comparative study, the present work can be used to determine more effective ways of strategically differentiating the images of local food culture associated with these cities from the view of brand communications. This study also demonstrates viable directions for designing web content for a city where the food cultural messages can be delivered in a thoughtful and effective manner.

The present study aims to examine the types of professors" discourse strategies that are used by Spanish native professors in the classes given to Korean university students. For this purpose, we recorded 15 hours of professors" lectures in Spanish of 6 compulsory subjects on a video tape and transcribed them. After the collection of the data, we identified 17 strategies and their representative examples. On the basis of this, we recorded frequency of each discourse strategy. In this way, we were able to identify the most frequently used strategies, and tried to explain the cause of their use taking the educational situation into consideration. Because we were concerned about the use of strategies for each of the 6 subjects: grammar, conversation, culture, vocabulary, composition, and reading comprehension, we determined by analysing the frequency the particular discourse strategy that were used in each individual subject.

The purpose of this article is to research the text-discourse strategies employed in a university president's speech. Speech is a type of one-sided formal public communication that transmits statements, which include one's theory, assertion or emotional contents in a given text in front of large audiences. Especially a university president's speech is a speaking form which embodies immediacy in a limited space, i.e., a university. Such as speech needs to utilize persuasive, sentimental and appealing production strategies that could induce the audience's sympathy and action. Therefore, a university president's speech includes all the communicative fields of listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is a public and popular communication means that integrates features of various communication skills in a university setting. Thus, ideal and effective strategies for delivering a university president's speech are discussed.
