        A 19-year-old male Siberian tiger was presented with inappetence and paralysis of hind limbs. In a computed tomography (CT) scan, intervertebral disk disease at L3–L4 was detected. Cardiac arrest occurred during the surgery. At autopsy, myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD) and eccentric hypertrophy of the left heart were noted. The diagnosis was congestive heart failure caused by MMVD. Microscopically, myocardial and pulmonary fibrosis were observed in addition to the disintegration of the fibrosa layer and accumulation of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans in the spongiosa layer of the mitral valve. This is the first case of congestive heart failure with MMVD in a Siberian tiger.

        The purpose of this study is to present a novel indicator for analyzing machine failure based on its idle time and productivity. Existing machine repair plan was limited to machine experts from its manufacturing industries. This study evaluates the repair status of machines and extracts machines that need improvement. In this study, F-RPN was calculated using the etching process data provided by the 2018 PHM Data Challenge. Each S(S: Severity), O(O: Occurence), D(D: Detection) is divided into the idle time of the machine, the number of fault data, and the failure rate, respectively. The repair status of machine is quantified through the F-RPN calculated by multiplying S, O, and D. This study conducts a case study of machine in a semiconductor etching process. The process capability index has the disadvantage of not being able to divide the values outside the range. The performance of this index declines when the manufacturing process is under control, hereby introducing F-RPN to evaluate machine status that are difficult to distinguish by process capability index.

        As earthquakes continue to occur in Korea in recent years, seismic evaluation and retrofit of existing school buildings have been carried out. Many domestic school buildings were built using or referring to standard drawings. Therefore, if the overall structural characteristics of a school building can be known first based on standard drawings, it can be provided as valuable data for detailed seismic evaluation. For this reason, this study investigated the weak structural components and failure modes by comparing the strength of beams, columns, and joints constituting standard school buildings constructed in the 1980s. The evaluation was performed for different types of standard drawings and different material strengths. The results showed that the joint was mainly the weakest due to the eccentricity, and the failure modes were partially changed depending on the material strength.

        Ti-Al-Si target and Cr-Si target are sputtered alternately to develop a multi-layered nitride coating on a steel mold to improve die-casting lifetime. Prior to the multi-layer deposition, a CrN layer is developed as a buffer layer on the mold to suppress the diffusion of reactive elements and enhance the cohesive strength of the multi-layer deposition. Approximately 50 nm CrSiN and TiAlSiN layers are deposited layer by layer, and form about three μm-thickness of multi-layered coating. From the observation of the uncoated and coated steel molds after the acceleration experiment of liquid metal injection casting, the uncoated mold is severely eroded by the adhesion of molten metallic glass. On the other hand, the multi-layer coating on the mold prevents element diffusion from the metallic glass and mold erosion during the experiment. The multi-layer structure of the coating transforms the nano-composite structured coating during the acceleration test. Since the nano-composite structure disrupts element diffusion to molten metallic glass, despite microstructure changes, the coating is not eroded by the 1,050 oC molten metallic glass.

        Three different cats who had chronic kidney disease (CKD) were treated for more than one month with fluid therapy in an animal clinic. Although this long-term treatment and hospitalization, there was no clinical improvement in clinical signs as well as serum biochemical indexes including blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (CREA), and phosphate (PHOS). All cases were then injected three times with allogeneic stem cells through an intravenous route for treatment on Day 0, 7, and 14 or 30. On the same day, clinical observation and blood tests for serum biochemistry were conducted together. Upon administrating stem cells to the CKD cats, clinical conditions and the indexes of BUN and CREA were clinically improved within normal ranges. Additionally, one of the cats who had the renal cysts presented clinical improvement with showing decreased cysts size than before.

        원자력 발전소에 지진격리장치를 설치하여 내진성능을 향상시킬 수 있다. 그러나 지진격리장치의 적용으로 지반과 구조물 사이에서 큰 상대 변위가 발생하게 된다. 따라서 지진격리된 구조물과 일반 구조물을 연결하는 연결배관시스템의 경우 지진리스크가 증가할 수 있다. 따라서 이러한 배관시스템의 지진취약도를 분석할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 지진취약도 분석 을 위해 지진격리된 APR1400 원자력발전소와 주증기관을 대상으로 지진취약도를 분석하였다. 주증기관은 지진격리된 nuclear island의 보조 건물과 터빈 건물을 연결하는 인터페이스 배관이다. 지진취약도 분석을 위한 파괴모드는 누출관통균열로 정의하였다. 누출은 실험결과와 수치해석을 통해 손상지수로 정량화하여 취약도 분석을 위한 파괴기준으로 사용하였다. 파괴기준의 변동에 의한 취약도 곡선의 변동성을 확인하기 위하여 손상지수의 최솟값, 최댓값, 평균값 및 중앙값을 파괴기준으로 하여 지진취약도 곡선을 작성하였다.

        급변하는 환경에서 지속 가능한 경쟁우위를 확보하기 위해 기업들은 끊임없이 새로운 지식을 획득해야 한다. 인수합병이나, 지식재산권의 구매 등이 이를 위한 대표적인 수단이나, 합작회사의 설립도 보완자산을 내재화하기 위한 효과적인 지식 획득 방법으로 주 목받고 있다. 그러나 모든 합작회사가 새로운 지식을 성공적으로 획득하는 것은 아닌데, 이는 기업들이 획득하고자 하는 지식의 특성에 맞는 적절한 학습전략 및 조직 구조를 갖추지 못했기 때문인 경우가 많다. 본 연구는 이 같은 문제의식 하에 상황이론 관점에서 지식의 특성을 다차원 적으로 구분하고 지식 특성에 맞는 학습전략과 조직구조의 필요성을 자동차 부품분야의 국제 합작회사 사례를 통해 살펴보았다. 하드웨어 기술에 최적화된 사례 회사(국제 합작회사)는 다른 성격의 지식인 소프트웨어 기술을 습득하기 위해 차별화된 학습 전략과 조직구조를 갖추지 못했고, 이러한 미스매치로 인해 합작회사를 통한 새로운 지식(엔진제어시 스템 기술)의 흡수에 실패하였다. 본 연구는 기업이 성공적 지식흡수를 위해 고려해야 할 요소들을 이론적 프레임워크를 통해 제시하고 실증분석을 통해 이를 검증함으로써 합작회사 설립, 인수합병 등 조직 변화를 통해 동태적 역량을 확보하고자 하는 기업들에게 실무적 시사점을 제공하고 있다.

        Nuclear power plant’s safety against seismic events is evaluated as risk values by probabilistic seismic safety assessment. The risk values vary by the seismic failure correlation between the structures, systems, and components (SSCs). However, most probabilistic seismic safety assessments idealized the seismic failure correlation between the SSCs as entirely dependent or independent. Such a consideration results in an inaccurate assessment result not reflecting real physical phenomenon. A nuclear power plant’s seismic risk should be calculated with the appropriate seismic failure correlation coefficient between the SSCs for a reasonable outcome. An accident scenario that has an enormous impact on a nuclear power plant’s seismic risk was selected. Moreover, the probabilistic seismic response analyses of a nuclear power plant were performed to derive appropriate seismic failure correlations between SSCs. Based on the analysis results, the seismic failure correlation coefficient between SSCs was derived, and the seismic fragility curve and core damage frequency of the loss of essential power event were calculated. Results were compared with the seismic fragility and core damage frequency of assuming the seismic failure correlations between SSCs were independent and entirely dependent.

        Most commercial buildings among existing RC buildings in Korea have a multi-story wall-frame structure where RC shear wall is commonly used as its core at stairways or elevators. The members of the existing middle and low-rise wall-frame buildings are likely arranged in ordinary details considering building occupancy, and the importance and difficulty of member design. This is because there are few limitations, considerations, and financial burdens on the code for designing members with ordinary details. Compared with the intermediate or unique details, the ductility and overstrength are insufficient. Furthermore, the behavior of the member can be shear-dominated. Since shear failure in vertical members can cause a collapse of the entire structure, nonlinear characteristics such as shear strength and stiffness deterioration should be adequately reflected in the analysis model. With this background, an 8-story RC wall-frame building was designed as a building frame system with ordinary shear walls, and the effect of reflecting the shear failure mode of columns and walls on the collapse mechanism was investigated. As a result, the shear failure mode effect on the collapse mechanism was evident in walls, not columns. Consequently, it is recommended that the shear behavior characteristics of walls are explicitly considered in the analysis of wall-frame buildings with ordinary details.

        Effects of pH and salt concentration on rheological and thermal properties of Pacific whiting surimi were investigated. As pH increased from 6 to 7.5, failure shear stress and strain values increased from 15.4 to 31.32 kPa, whereas lightness values (L * ) decreased from 86.22 to 78.86. Storage modulus (G') followed a trend similar to failure shear stress. A linear relationship (r 2 =0.89) was found between G' and failure stress values as a function of pH. Increasing salt concentration up to 1% increased failure shear stress to 27.14 kPa without salt to 34.30 kPa, and strain values from 1.73 to 1.91, whereas further increase had a negative effect. The relationship between dynamic rheological data and failure shear stress was not linear, indicating that salt concentration cannot be used as an index for estimating final gel quality. The transition temperatures obtained from temperature sweep measurements of Pacific whiting surimi at different salt concentrations showed similar peak temperatures as DSC thermograms, indicating lower stability due to increased salt concentration.

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the reality of the suffering as infertile women who are doing repeated ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) for pregnancy and childbirth. Methods: The data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s (1978) phenomenological method. Nine women receiving repetitive ART participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews for this study. Results: Data analysis yielded sixteen themes which were grouped into four theme clusters: ‘Being demoted to a tool only for pregnancy’, ‘Struggling for the happiness hard to get’, ‘Standing loneliness alone on a solitary island’, and ‘Ongoing yearning for recognition by pregnancy and childbirth’. Conclusion: The findings provide further understanding of complex experiences of women receiving ART who were struggling with practical, psychological, and relational issues in their everyday lives. Based on the results of this study, health professionals are urged to support those women receiving repetitive ART by providing comprehensive caring programs that employ personal, social, and psychological approaches so that they can resolve such issues.

        In this study, analyzed the cause of failure of the cardan shaft for water propulsion of an armored wheeled vehicle. During the development test(DT), the vehicle was deflected to the left on the water. As a result of the confirmation, increasing angular displacement and abrasion of SPIDER(Universal joint) occurred. As a result of a structure analysis and torsion fracture test, cause of failure is not insufficient design and strength deficit of each parts. and as a result of a simulation review of the assembly layout of each part, it was confirmed that excessive rotational vibration occurred. In order to solve this problem, improved the assembly layout of the water propulsion system and the worn SPIDER lubrication. Since there has been no occurrence of the same case between military operations so far, it has been confirmed that the improvement plan is appropriate.

        PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to understand blow-up distress and causes in concrete pavement. METHODS : Feasible causes of blow-up and existing models were reviewed based on the literature. Three analytical models were adopted to perform a sensitivity analysis. Input parameters reflected the typical concrete pavement of national expressways. Evaluation of blow-up models was based on the amount of temperature increase and zero stress temperature of the concrete pavement. RESULTS : A review of the literature indicated that the five major causes of blow-up were: increase in temperature and solar radiation, alkaliaggregate reaction (AAR), friction characteristics between the concrete slab and subbase, joint closure (incompressible), and joint freezing. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the coefficient of thermal expansion had the greatest influence on the blow-up safety temperature. CONCLUSIONS : From existing blow-up model results, it could be concluded that the construction of concrete pavement during the winter season was not effective at preventing blow-up. In addition, an equivalent coefficient of thermal expansion that considers slab expansion due to AAR was proposed as a model input parameter for concrete pavement sections damaged by AAR.

        There have been a lot of studies in the past for the method of predicting the failure of a machine, and recently, a lot of researches and applications have been generated to diagnose the physical condition of the machine and the parts and to calculate the remaining life through various methods. Survival models are also used to predict plant failures based on past anomaly cycles. In particular, special machine that reflect the fluid flow and process characteristics of chemical plants are connected to hundreds or thousands of sensors, so there are not many factors that need to be considered, such as process and material data as well as application of derivative variables. In this paper, the data were preprocessed through time series anomaly detection based on unsupervised learning to predict the abnormalities of these special machine. Next, clustering results reflecting clustering-based data characteristics were applied to produce additional variables, and a learning data set was created based on the history of past facility abnormalities. Finally, the prediction methodology based on the supervised learning algorithm was applied, and the model update was confirmed to improve the accuracy of the prediction of facility failure. Through this, it is expected to improve the efficiency of facility operation by flexibly replacing the maintenance time and parts supply and demand by predicting abnormalities of machine and extracting key factors.

        Cu/PET composite films are widely used in a variety of wearable electronics. Lifetime of the electronics is determined by adhesion between the Cu film and the PET substrate. The formation of an anisotropic nanostructure on the PET surface by surface modification can enhance Cu/PET interfacial adhesion. The shape and size of the anisotropic nanostructures of the PET surface can be controlled by varying the surface modification conditions. In this work, the effect of Cu/PET interface nanostructures on the failure mechanism of a Cu/PET flexible composite film is studied. From observation of the morphologies of the anisotropic nanostructures on plasma-treated PET surfaces, and cross-sections and surfaces of the fractured specimens, the Cu/PET interface area and nanostructure width are analyzed and the failure mechanism of the Cu/PET film is investigated. It is found that the failure mechanism of the Cu/PET flexible composite film depends on the shape and size of the plasmatreated PET surface nanostructures. Cu/PET interface nanostructures with maximal peel strength exhibit multiple craze-crack propagation behavior, while smaller or larger interface nanostructures exhibit single-path craze-crack propagation behavior.
