This study examines the Gyeongju Seokguram Grotto restoration project (1961-1962) by architect Kim Chung Up (1922-1988) and introduces the documents he wrote at the time of planning. The study highlights Kim’s Plan attempt to adopt Buckminster Fuller’s idea of the Geodesic Dome, while inheriting the architect Pai Ki Hyung’s previous design plan which was nullified. As Seokguram Grotto’s water leak and deterioration issues have been brought up, the four-times survey was carried out by experts team between 1958 and 1960, under Ministry of Education’s direction. Pai designed an initial restoration plan based on the survey’s result, which was a double-dome structure with a concrete film on the outer periphery as a way to protect Seokguram Grotto in January 1961. However, as drawbacks, such as the heavy load of the concrete dome, and non-installation of entrance hall, have been indicated in the review process, the Cultural Properties Committee rejected the plan. Subsequently, Kim was appointed as the supervisor of the second restoration project. Kim drew up a process management schedule to be implemented from August 1961 to December 1963 and designed the conception plans for the second restoration design. This study analyzes Kim’s Plan by examining sketches, site plans, floor plans, and sections. Kim planned to maintain the idea of the double-dome structure proposed by Pai while applying Buckminster Fuller’s idea of the Geodesic Dome. Kim planned to lighten the dome structure by applying a steel-frame Geodesic Dome so that the dome structure could be supported by its own. The study is expected to reclaim the omitted parts from Seokguram Grotto's historical description and Kim's careers.

PURPOSES : The type and degree of structural conditions and influencing factors distributed across representative sections should be similar to those distributed across entire sections as the representative sections have been predominantly used for developing performance prediction models, which substitute entire sections of road pavement. Therefore, a logic that selects the representative sections with similar distributions of structural conditions and the influencing factors with those of entire expressway asphalt pavement sections requires development. METHODS : The logic developed in this study to select the representative sections of asphalt pavements comprised three steps. First, the data on the structural conditions of the pavement and the influencing climate conditions and pavement materials were collected and organized. Consequently, in the second step, the candidate sections were selected, with the severity of the structural conditions of the pavement distributed widely and evenly. Finally, in addition to the widely and evenly distributed pavement conditions, the representative sections with climatic conditions and pavement materials were selected. RESULTS : A total of 6,352 ordinary asphalt pavement sections and 596 composite asphalt pavement sections were selected as entire expressway asphalt pavement sections and the data were collected and organized according to the logic developed in this study. Three times the representation sections were selected as candidate sections and, finally, 85 sections were selected as representative sections. The distribution of structural conditions and influencing climate conditions and pavement materials in the representative sections were similar to those in the entire sections. In addition, the representative sections were spread evenly across the country. CONCLUSIONS : The sections presenting similar distributions of structural conditions and the influencing factors of entire expressway asphalt pavement sections could be selected in this study. Using the representative sections selected in this study, a remodeling index model will be developed for predicting the asphalt pavement sections that require large-scale repair.

This study examines the restoration project of Sokkuram, and introduces its preliminary plans by the architect Pai Ki Hyung. The restoration project started in 1958 with an inquiry committee of the restoration project, and was completed in 1964. Despite having undergone extensive repair work under Japanese supervision from 1913 and 1923, the repair work caused water leakages inside Sokkuram, and regular cleaning work that began in 1933 caused a lot of damage to the sculpture. In result of the surveys, the top priority of this project was to protect the sculptures inside Sokkuram by improving the environment of the cave. At that time, the architect Mr. Pai participated as a head of the fourth field surveyors to plan the restoration project and to design the preliminary plans. He proposed the installation of a double dome structure to prevent further water leakages on the concrete addition that was built up around the grotto by the Japanese. However, in 1961, the Cultural Heritage Committee of Korea examined the plans of Mr. Pai and immediately rejected them. The factors of the rejection were the omitting of entrance design, system of new double dome structure that presses the existing structure, and these changes that had to be made outside of the drainage plans. The repair work of Sokkuram began in 1961, and the main construction was building double dome structure and entrance installation. In this we realize that Mr. Pai’s double dome structure plans were very important key concept of this project. This study attempts to demonstrate the double dome installations that Mr. Pai initially proposed, which ultimately remains as emblematic factors of Sokkuram’s legacy.

PURPOSES: Case studies of an asphalt-overlay project with a performance-based contract method were conducted on a national highway in Korea to evaluate the effect of the method on asphalt pavement maintenance. This study evaluated the procedure of the performance-based contract method. METHODS: In this study, an asphalt-pavement maintenance project for a national highway was assessed with a performance-based contract to investigate the advantage of the new contract procedures. This is the first trial applying the performance-based contract to a pavementrehabilitation project in Korea. In the four case studies, the warranty period of the performance-based contract was designed for seven years. The research team monitored the construction site to compare the normal contract method with the performance-based contract method. The case studies’project sites were investigated after the end of the construction. RESULTS : Based on the limited case studies, the performance-based contract method could extend the service life of the asphalt pavement and reduce the pavement-maintenance budget because the quality control was well managed by the contractors. However, a few construction laws would be necessary to apply the performance-based contract method in the future. CONCLUSIONS : Using the performance-based contract, the construction company made great efforts to guarantee the warranty period and to apply the optimal maintenance method, based on the pavement distress condition. The contractor and the agency would need to understand the new performance-based contract system for it to be activated. Therefore, a proper education program for the performancebased contract system would be needed to educate the stakeholders regarding the procedures and their effects on the pavement management and maintenance.

This study is on the construction work of Preservation for Korean architectural properties during the period of japan invader. Korea lost their preservation ability of architectural properties when went through specific background from 1910 to 1945, which was the period of japan invader. Through this situation japan had to face the preservation of architectural properties for japan and korea. After 1945, korea has preserved the architectural properties over 50's years and which accomplishment every yew. Also, there are some architectural properties which registered in world heritages. However, the study of this period is not studied enough. Especially a construction work for architectural properties during this period is not become known. Therefore, the purpose of this study is for three. First is to analyze construction work data(a specifications and etc.) for accessing originality of korea architectural properties. Second is to understand about the construction works of preservation for the korean architectural properties. and the last is to compare the peculiarities of construction work of Preservation for korean architectural properties between during 1910-1945 and 1945-1965.

The bricks in Myung Dong Cathedral Church are now deteriorated by the weather such as temperature, humidity, and winds. Thus it is necessary to replace the old bricks to the restored bricks for the load bearing capacity as well as to prevent the penetrations of rains from outside. However the mortar composition is not well defined at this moment and there are literary about the mortar completions. Thus it is necessary to verify the mortar compactions between old bricks and results to bring the restoring the mortar for the replace of new bricks. The particles of mortar was collected from Myung Dong Cathedral Church and particle size was analyzed by the mortar and pestle and mechanicle floater. The X-ray diffraction and XRF of each particles are analyzed. The quartz and feldspar such as albite, kaolinite are observed in large particles(>1mm). However, the clicite was observed at lower than $43{\mu}m$ particles. In XRF analysis, the $SiO_2\;and\;K_2O$ are observed at large particles$(1mm-208{\mu}m)\;and\;CaCO_3$ is observed at small particles$(208-43{\mu}m)\;and\;CaCO_3$ is observed at small particles($208-43{\mu}m$). This is well coincide with XRD results. The optimum volume ratio of lime mortar would be 1: 2 ($CaO: SiO_2$).
