        본 연구에서는 거세방법에 따른 한우의 안심살(M. psoas major), 꽃등심살(M. longissimus thoracis) 및 우둔살(M. semimembranous)의 육질특 성과 지방산 조성을 조사하였다. 공시시료는 송아지가 7개월령에 도달하면, 외과적 수술방법을 통해 한쪽 고환을 제거한 반거세 한우(half-castration; HC) 9두와 양쪽 모두 제거한 완전거세 한우(complete-castration; CC) 8두를 이용하였다. 거세된 송아지는 24-26개월까지 동일한 조건에서 사육한 후 도축하고 3개 부위(안심살, 꽃등심살, 우둔살)를 채취하여 육질 분석하였다. 거세방법에 따른 그룹 간 지방함량은 HC 그룹이 2.97~11.06%로 CC 그룹보다 낮은 함량을 나타내었으며, 수분함량은 HC 그룹이 65.39~70.90%로 CC 그룹보다 높은 함량을 나타내었다(p<0.05). 3개 근육의 pH는 5.47~5.54 범위였으며, pH와 보수력은 거세방법에 따른 유의적인 차이는 나타나지 않았다(p>0.05). 육색은 L*값과 a*값에서 HC가 CC보다 낮게 나타났다(p<0.05). 가열감량과 전단력은 HC 그룹의 꽃등심살이 CC 그룹보다 높은 값을 나타내었다(p<0.05). 지방산 조성은 palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, vaccenic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, linoleneic acid와 PUFA, n6에서 HC와 CC 그룹 간 유의적 차이가 나타났다(p<0.05). 특히, 지방산 조성에서 HC 그룹과 CC 그룹 모두 oleic acid가 가장 높은 함량을 나타내었다(p<0.05). 따라서 거세 방법은 한우육의 근육 내 지방, 육색, 연도와 같은 이화학적 특성과 지방산 조성에 영향을 미칠 수 있다고 사료된다.

        Endocrine system of hormones is the critical factor for the development of testes. The levels of hormones are orchestrated by a positive or negative feedback system controlled by the hyphothalamic-pituitary-gonad axis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of unbalanced endocrine system induced by the hemi-castration on testicular development in stallions. Four Thoroughbred stallions (age ranging from 3 to 5 yr) were used in this study. To disturb endocrine system, hemicastration has been performed on the stallions. Several parameters including testicular weight, volume, germ cell population on the cross-sections of round tubule, and the area of seminiferous tubules of stallion testes collected at the 1st hemi-castration and the 2nd hemi-castration (about 1 year after 1st hemi-castration) were compared. Testosterone levels were compared for 3 weeks before, after 1st castration, and before 2nd castration using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedure was conducted to compare germ cell populations between after 1st and 2nd castration using VASA antibody. The VASA positive cell population per a cross section of round seminiferous tubule was obtained by monitoring 100 tubules. Interestingly, the weight of testes obtained at 2nd hemi-castration (384±14 g) were significantly higher compared to that of testes collected at the 1st hemi-castration (288±34 g). The volume of testes (306±34 ml) collected at the 2nd hemi-castration was higher than that of testes (169±18 ml) collected at the 1st castration. In contrast, VASA positive germ cell population on the cross section of round tubule (124.9±12.4 vs 142.9±21.6) and the area of round tubule (124±9.7 vs 122.9±1.7 mm2) were not different after 1st castration and 2nd castration. the testosterone levels in the blood collected before, after 1st castration, and before 2nd castration were not significantly different. In conclusion, the hemi-castration induces testicular development to maintain the normal reproductive systems in stallions.

        This research was conducted to evaluate the physicochemical properties of semi-dried jerky made from uncastrated (U) and castrated (C) deer meat. The jerky was manufactured by mixing the ground lean meat with spices followed by drying process, packed and stored aerobically at 25℃ for 20 days. The pH of uncastrated raw meat was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of castrated meat as well as the pH of the jerky. No effects were found on color, hardness and sensory scores of jerky. Castrated jerky had higher fat content than uncastrated jerky (p<0.05), after 20 days of storage, its TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) value was higher than uncastrated jerky (p<0.01). These results suggest that castration contributed to higher fat content and lipid oxidation of semi-dried venison jerky than the uncastrated, without any significant effects on texture and sensory attributes. However, proper packaging should be considered to inhibit lipid oxidation.

        A four-year-old thoroughbred male horse (450 kg) who behaved in an aggressive manner toward people and other horses was referred to undergo castration surgery at the Equine Hospital, Jangsu Stud Farm and Training Center, Korea Racing Authority. Castration was performed by a closed technique using sedation (detomidine 10 mg IV) and regional anaesthesia (lidocaine) on a line 1 cm from the median raphe while the horse was standing. Incisions were made through the scrotal skin, tunica dartos, and scrotal fascia for each testis parallel to the median raphe, which was approximately 10 cm long. The testis, still capsulated by the parietal vaginal tunic, was grasped and the scrotal fascia was stripped upward from the parietal vaginal tunic using dry gauze. Then the parietal vaginal tunic, cremaster muscle, and spermatic cord were emasculated. The surgical area was disinfected without suturing. An anti-inflammatory drug (phenylbutazone) and antibiotics (benzylpenicillin + dihydrostreptomycin) were prescribed for seven days following surgery. Mild swelling and hemorrhage were observed around the region of surgery on the first day following the operation. Seven days later, no swelling or hemorrhage was observed, while formation of granulation tissue was observed in the scrotum, indicating a normal healing process.

        Linuron is a pesticide with a weak anti-androgenic property, which impacts male reproductive organs. In this study, to clarify whether linuron affects the cellular antioxidant system of ventral prostate, gene expression patterns of the representative antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx), selenoprotein P (SePP), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were investigated in the rat ventral prostates exposed to linuron using real-time RT-PCR analyses. Sprague-Dawley rats castrated at 6 weeks old were treated with linuron (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg per oral) daily for 10 days after testosterone propionate administration (0.4 mg/kg) subcutaneously. As compared to normal control animals, mRNA levels of phospholipid hydroperoxide GPx (PHGPx), SePP, and Mn SOD significantly increased in the prostates exposed to linuron (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg). However, cytosolic GPx (100 mg/kg) and Cu/Zn SOD (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) mRNA levels significantly decreased in the ventral prostates. These results indicate that linuron upregulates the expressions of PHGPx, SePP, and Mn SOD mRNAs, but down-regulates the expressions of cytosolic GPx and Cu/Zn SOD in rat prostates, suggesting that linuron may have dual effects in the cellular antioxidant system of prostate.

        Procymidone is a fungicide with anti-androgenic properties widely used to protect fruits from fungal infection, which induces an excessive reactive oxygen species production in male reproductive organs. In this study, to clarify whether procymidone affect the cellular antioxidant system of prostate at onset of puberty, gene expression patterns of the representative antioxidant enzymes such as cytoplasmic glutathione peroxidase (GPx1), phospholipid hydroperoxide GPx (PHGPx), selenoprotein P (SePP), cytoplasmic copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1), and manganese SOD (SOD2) were investigated in the rat ventral prostates exposed to procymidone using real-time RT-PCR analyses. Seven-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats castrated at 6 weeks old were treated with procymidone (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg per day) orally for 7 consecutive days after testosterone propionate (0.4 mg/kg per day) administration by subcutaneous injection. As compared to normal control animals, GPx1 mRNA expression in prostates significantly increased by the administration with TP and/or procymidone. However, PHGPx and SOD1 mRNA levels significanatly decreased by over 25 mg/kg of procymidone treatment and SePP and SOD2 mRNA levels was significanatly reduced by over 50 mg/kg of procymidone treatment. These findings indicate that procymidone may affect the antioxidant system of prostatic cells in up-regulation mode of GPx1, but in down-regulation modes of PHGPx, SePP, SOD1, and SOD2, suggesting that procymidone may affect differently the cellular antioxidant system of prostate according to the exposure doses.

        약물치료명령은 성범죄자의 성적 환상 및 심각한 성범죄자의 충동을 약물을 이용하여 통제하는 치료 방법으로 그 도입이 확산되는 추세를 보인다. 우리나라 역시 2010년 7월에 성폭력범죄자의 성충동 약물치료에 관한 법률을 제정하였다. 성 범죄자에 대한 약물치료는 물리적 거세와 구분하여 화학적 거세라는 용어로 대체 사용된다. 화학적 거세는 이는 아동성범죄자를 포함한 상습적인 성범죄자 들에 대하여 성 충동 및 성적 호르몬(테스토스테른)을 감소시켜 성범죄를 예방 시키려는 의학적인 제재방법이다. 화학적 치료, 또는 의학적 치료라고도 한다. 화학적 거세를 위한 약물로는 남성호르몬을 억제시키는 시프로테론, 데포 프로 베라, 메드락시프로제스테른 등을 사용하며, 이들 약물은 남성의 섹스 충동, 강 박적인 성적 환상 및 성발기력을 감소시키는 효과가 있다. 약물치료를 받은 범 죄자들에 의한 평균 재범률은 5% 미만으로 나타났다. 그러나 성범죄자에 대한 화학적 거세가 대상자의 인권을 침해하며, 이중처벌이며, 부작용이 심각하다는 등의 지적이 있다. 또한 화학적 거세가 필요한 의학적 진단기준이 모호하다는 지적도 제기된다. 그러나 이러한 논쟁에 대하여 본 논문은 다음과 같은 입장이 다. 첫째, 약물치료의 부작용은 대상자의 생명에 지장을 줄 만큼 중대하지 않으 며, 그 부작용 역시 매우 일시적이라는 점이다. 치료를 중단할 경우 성적 능력도 회복된다. 그러나 성범죄 피해자의 신체적, 정신적, 경제적 피해는 평생 동안 지 속된다는 점에서 극단적인 성적 충동을 억제하지 못하는 범죄자에게 약물치료는 필요하다고 본다. 둘째, 화학적 거세의 효과는 매우 높아 성범죄의 재범률은 5%로 떨어진다. 이는 성범죄로부터 잠재적인 피해자, 그리고 지역사회를 보호 한다는 의미가 있다. 셋째, 의학적 치료명령은 이중처분이 아니라 보안처분으로서의 성격을 가진다. 법원 역시 같은 태도를 갖고 있다. 즉 치료명령은 현재 치료감호법 및 보호관찰등에 관한 법률에 따른 치료명령 또는 보호관찰 등과 같이 보안처분으로 볼 수 있다. 넷째, 의학적 치료명령 시 성범죄자의 자발적 동의가 반드시 필요하다고 볼 수 없다. 왜냐하면 앞에서와 같이 의학적 치료명령은 보안처분의 일종이므로 대상자의 동의가 필요하다고 볼 수 없으며, 의학적, 범행의 상습성 등을 고려하여 결정할 사안이라고 본다. 이에 대하여도 법원은 같은 입장으로 확인된다. 다섯째, 의학적 치료명령을 결정함에 있어 검찰 또는 법원 은 의학적인 소견이 주요한 판단근거로 활용하는 바, 보다 정교한 의학적 진단 규정이 마련되어야 한다. 이는 의사의 윤리적인 갈등을 최소화하는 데에도 중요 하다.

        Yeats suffered greatly from the love affair with Maud Gonne but particularly from the contradiction that she manifested. The poet devoted his love and poems to her in vain. But the contradiction is not peculiar or unique problems to Yeats but all men in Western patriarchal tradition. Indeed women for men are figuring simultaneously as madonna and whore, angel and beast. Because the woman has the power to provoke the tumult of desire in man and to gain over him through the desire, the men is afraid of being weaken by her, infected with her feminity and of then showing himself incapable or castrated. The fact that woman from a phallocentric viewpoint appears to be castrated is as reassuring for men as it is alarming. On the one hand, he projects her as lack and sees himself completed in her, thus confirming male hegemony. On the other hand, the so-called castrated woman can reflect back to man a dangerous paradox: if she had been castrated, then his own possession of a penis was in danger by her. In order not to be a paralyzing threat, a woman must have phallic attributes and must become the phallic woman idealized beyond sexuality. The phallic woman is thus fantasized by the man as a defense against castration anxiety. Representation of the phallic woman, he believes, protects him against doubts about his masculinity. Making her like a man conserves the man’s narcissism. The ambiguous nature of the woman is well presented in Yeats’s “Presences.” Here Yeats categorizes the woman as archetypes “harlot,” “child,” and “queen.” And their seductive “rustle of lace or silken stuff” evokes a contradictory femaleness over which he has no rights and which can move rapidly from vulnerable to ruthless, even turning that very vulnerability into a disturbing power over him. In “A Bronze Head,” the woman representative of Maud Gonne remains mysterious and inaccessible, overflowing the ‘images’ and ‘forms’ in which he tries to capture her. In “No Second Troy,” Yeats blames Maud Gonne for her violent political action, perhaps because she cannot be desexualized, idealized, or fetishized fully as he wishes. One of the reasons that Yeats is desperate to prevent the woman from being involved in the politics is that for Yeats the ideal form of a woman would not allow for difference to infiltrate the idealized autonomy. In this sense Yeats prays for his daughter to be the woman with nature of mindless organic spontaneity and for her bridegroom to bring her to a house of custom and ceremony. The idealization of the woman as nature into civilization, however, will not entirely do because it inescapably exposed to the fearful power of death. As Freud argues in Civilization and its Discontents, Eros’s sublimation of the nature into civilization inevitably exhausts its power, which leaves it vulnerable to Thanatos that then threatens to destroy the social order one has so laboriously constructed. The dilemma of sublimation is well explicated in Yeats’s “Mediations in Time of Civil War“ where he perceives the conflict between insistent demands of death drive and the inhibitory requirements of civilization. “Leda and the Swan” shows that the phallic civilization is born together with the brute power of violence and destruction that is to threaten all the social orders. By desexualizing, idealizing, or sublimating the woman, the man may reduce the horror of castration. But his attempt is radically self-defeating and self-undoing, for the more he sublimates her, the more likely she becomes the destroyer of ideal orders. Because of this paradox, the woman remains ontological aphoria to Yeats.

        본 연구는 돼지의 성별에 따른 거세와 난소 적출이 체성장과 사료 이용성, 혈중 호르몬 농도에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위하여 축산기술연구소에서 계통 조성중인 35일령의 돼지 48두를 이용하여 실시하였으며, 얻어진 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 체성장 및 사료 이용성 산육능력에 있어서 암퇘지 난소 적출구의 일당증체량은 898.6 g으로 대조구의 862.7 g보다 높게 나타났으나 유의차는 없었고, 수퇘지 거세구의 일당증체 량은 926.0 g으로 대조구의 945.5 g 보다 약간 낮았으며, 유의차는 없었으나, 수퇘지 대조구는 암퇘지군 보다 일당증체량이 높게 나타났다. 사료요구율은 수퇘지 대조구가 2.51로 가장 낮게 나타났으며 암퇘지군에 비해 유의하게 낮았으나 거세구와의 유의차는 없었으며, 난소 적출구와 대조구와는 차이가 없었다. 등지방 두께는 수퇘지 대조구가 1.65 cm로 가장 낮게 나타났고, 암퇘지군과 유의차는 없었으며, 각각의 대조구가 시험구에 비해 유의하게 낮게 나타났다. 2. 혈중 호르몬 변화 혈중호르몬 변화에 있어서 IGF-I 농도는 암퇘지군 대조구에서는 5주령의 45.1±0.72ng/m1에서 15주령의 356.3±3.05ng/ml까지 점차적으로 높은 경향을 나타내었으나, 그 이후부터 23주령까지 일정한 수준으로 유지되었다. 수퇘지 군에서도 혈중 IGF-I 농도 변화는 암퇘지와 비슷한 경향을 보였으나 전구간에서 암퇘지 군에 비해 수쾌지 군이 다소 높은 경향을 보였다. 한편, 거세 및 난소 적출구의 경우에는 각각의 대조구에 비해 다소 낮은 경 향치를 나타내었다. 혈중 스테로이드 호르몬 변화에 있어서 대조구 암퇘지의 혈중 estradiol-l7β 농도는 5주령에서는 극히 낮은 수준이었으나, 그 이후 11주령의 21.8±1.61pg/ml에서 23주령까지 점차 증가되었다. 또한 대조구의 혈중 progesterone 농도는 5주령에 비해 11주령 이후부터 다소 높은 농도를 나타내었다. 반면에 난소적출된 암퇘지에 있어서는 estradiol-17β와 progesterone 농도는 거의 검출한계 이하로 나타났다. 한편, 수퇘지의 testosterone 농도는 대조구의 5주령에서는 0.28±0.17ng/ml로 낮은 수준이었으나 11주령에서는 4.63±0.78ng/ml로 증가되었으며 그 후 23주령까지 유의적으로 증가되었다. 이에 반해 거세돼지의 경우에는 23주령까지 전혀 검출이 되지 않아 거세돼지의 경우 혈중 testosterone은 거의분비가 되지 않는 것으로 나타났다.

        본 시험은 Holstein종 수소를 조기에 외과적 거세 후 SR-rbST 투여시 사육 단계별 건물 및 영양분 섭취량 변화에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위하여 Holstein 수소 32두를 공시 하여 얻어진 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 건물 섭취량은 비거세구와 거세구는 큰 차이 가 없었지만 rbSTl구와 rbST2구는 각각 7.88kg과 7.65kg으로 비거세구와 거세구에 비해 6~9% 정도 건물 섭취량이 적었다. 2. NRC 비육우 요구량 대비

        Surgical castration (also known as orchidectomy, ORX) has been frequently performed to avoid uncontrolled breeding. However, it has some serious disadvantages. Several laboratories have developed chemical castration methods, using bilateral intratesticular injection (BITI) of simple chemical solutions. The present study was undertaken to compare the effects of ORX and of hypertonic saline BITI on the androgen-sensitive tissues such as pituitary and hypothalamus. Serum testosterone (T) levels of ORX animals and hypertonic saline BITI animals (SAL) after 4 weeks of the manipulations exhibited significantly drops as compared with the levels of intact animals (Intact:ORX:SAL = 7.74± 1.31:1.34±0.19:1.28±0.18 ng/ml, p<0.001). Both ORX and BITI method induced similar stimulatory effects on the pituitary gonadotropin subunits and hypothalamic KiSS-1 gene expressions. In contrast, the effects of ORX and hypertonic saline BITI on hypothalamic GnRH gene expression were different from these gene expressions, shown an inverse relationship between the two groups (Intact:ORX:SAL = 1:0.45±0.06:1:2.07±0.41:1.51±0.37 AU; ORX, p<0.001; SAL, p< 0.05). In conclusion, we provided evidence that hypertonic saline BITI method has equivalent efficacy of T depletion to surgical castration in rats. The present study suggests the hypertonic saline BITI could be a promising substitute to conventional surgical castration.

        Previous studies, including our own, have demonstrated that the intratesticular injection of hypertonic saline (20%) decreased serum testosterone level which was similar to the surgical castration in the rat, showing the state of chemical castration. In the present study, we further verify the efficacy of this less invasive method as an alternative of surgical orchidectomy in the andrological field. Sterilized 20% saline was directly injected into the adult male rats (750 μl per testis). The tested rats were divided into 3 groups including intact group (intact), orchidectomy group (ORX) and saline injection group (SAL) after bilateral orchidectomy was performed at the same day of injection. All rats were sacrificed at 4 weeks after injection. The reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, seminal vesicles and prostates) were collected and used for DNA and protein pattern analyses. Also, patho-histological studies on the testes were performed. In contrast to the intact group, similar DNA damages of testis and seminal vesicle were appeared in ORX group and SAL group. The DNA degradations seemed to be the results of necrosis rather than apoptosis. In the protein pattern analysis, all the testing tissues exerted similar patterns in the ORX group and the SAL group compared to the those of intact group. Patho-histological studies revealed that severe degenerative changes in testicular seminiferous tubules and massive infiltration of immune cells in SAL group. The present study confirmed that direct injection of hypertonic saline into the testis caused the equivalent biochemical changes in the accessory sex organs as shown in the orchidectomized animals. These results suggest that hypertonic saline injection model could be a useful castration model which can substitute for surgical castration when its safety is secured through further study in the future.
