        득량만에서 발생되는 수괴의 연직 구조의 변동을 역학적으로 규명하기 위하여 Simpson and Hunter(1974)와 Simpson and Bowers(1981)의 에너지식을 이용하여 수괴의 연직 환합과 관련된 바람, 태양 그리고 조류 에너지를 계산하여 보았다. 그 결과 바람에너지에 비하여 태양 에너지와 조류에너지가 약 10배 종도 큼을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 태양 에너지의 경우 관측 기간 동안 큰 변동이 없는 반면 조류의 경우 대조기와 소조기대의 에너지가 약 10배 정도 차이가 남을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과로 미루어 볼 때 하계 득량만의 수괴의 연직 구조변동은 대.소조기 변동에 따른 조류의 세기에 의하여 결정됨을 잘 알 수 있었다. 그리고 태풍에 의한 에너지의 변동을 살펴보기 위하여 Fujita의 경험적인 태풍 모델을 도입하여 태풍이 득량만의 좌측과 우측을 통과할 때의 에너지의 변동을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 태풍 에너지는 조류 에너지의 크기와 매우 비슷하며 특히 대조기때의 조류 에너지의 크기와 매우 유사함을 알 수 있었다. 여기서 주목되는 것은 득량만에서 연직 혼합을 일으키는 10-15m/sec의 바람 에너지의 크기와 30-40cm/sec 세기의 조류가 가지고 있는 조류에너지의 크기가 매우 비슷함을 알 수 있다. 따라서 득량만의 경우 조류에 의한 수괴의 연직 혼합의 세기는 태풍 에너지와 거의 비슷함을 알 수 있다. 이러한 결과를 미루어 볼 때 대조기때의 득량만의 조류 에너지는 거의 태풍 통과시 바람 에너지와 거의 비슷함을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 연구는 Simpson(1981)의 결과와도 매우 유사하게 나타났다.

        Fluid in a rotating coordinate generally flows along equi-potential vorticity line. Without disturbances such as dissipation, rapid vertical mixing, and external forcing such as energy exchanges, potential vorticity is conserved in the thermally and dynamically closed system. This study is the first trial to investigate the potential vorticity in the East Sea. The purpose of this study is to show the distribution of the potential vorticity due to the variation of sea water density and topography in baroclinic and barotropic conditions. The conclusions are given as follows. First, vertical mixing is well striking in February than in August, and flow patterns in February are different from those in August. Secondly, contour lines of isotrophe is similar to bottom topography, while potential vorticity is similar to the distribution of dynamic topography. Thirdly, the circulation of the East Sea Water flows approximately along contours of potential vorticity in the region of high baroclinicity and along those of isotrophe in other region.

        Kadsura coccinea (Lem.) A.C. Smith is used as a medicinal plant and cosmetic material in China and Southeast Asia. To mass-produce Kadsura coccinea seedlings, the effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) and cold stratification treatments on seed germination were investigated. Seed germination rate with GA3 treatment was most effective at concentrations of 250 or 500 mg/L. With respect to mean germination time (MGT), mean daily germination, and T50 (days to reach 50% seed germination), the germination-promoting effect was improved as the concentration of GA3 increased. Stem growth of seedlings was the highest following GA3 treatments of 250 and 500 mg/L, and the growth promoting effect gradually decreased as the concentration of GA3 decreased. Root growth was stimulated at GA3 concentrations of 250–1,000 mg/L. Examination of the effect of stratification treatment for 15, 30 and 60 days at temperatures of 0, 5 and 10℃ on the germination rate revealed that the most stratification treatment temperature was 10℃, and the results improved with longer treatment periods. Altogether, GA3 and stratification treatments improved the seed germination rate, shortened the MGT, improved germination uniformity, and produced healthy seedlings.

        Background: Dehisced ginseng seeds need to be stored at cold temperatures for around 3 months to break their physiological dormancy, and thus, to aid in gemination. In the presence of high moisture in such an environment, seed spoilage and pre-germination may lower seed quality and productivity. To improve seed quality during cold-stratification, the effects of seed dehydration and temperature were tested. Methods and Results: In early December, dehisced ginseng seeds were dehydrated at 4 different levels and stored at 2℃- 2℃, and –20℃ for 3 months. Germination was carried out on the filter papers moistened with distilled water; emergence of root, shoot, and seed spoilage were assessed. Seed viability was examined by the tetrazolium test. More than 90% of the seeds stored at 2℃ and –2 ℃ without drying or endocarp dehydration germinated, but seeds that were dehydrated to have a moisture content (MC) below 31% showed poor germination and lost their viability. In addition, the seeds stored at –20℃ failed to show effective germination. Conclusions: Seed storage after endocarp dehydration might help to improve seed quality and increase seedling's ability to stand during the spring-sowing of ginseng.

        Background : Upon harvest in the summer, seeds of Panax ginseng are unmatured and need further maturation, dehiscence and cold-stratification, for germination. For the cold-stratification, the seeds should be stored in the cold temperature for 90-100 days, however no further description about the storage condition have been described even though there have been many problems in emergence rate and quality of ginseng in the spring-sowed filed. Methods and Results : Thus here we tested 3 different storage temperature(2℃, -2℃, and – 20℃) in combination of 4 different seed water content(59%, 54%, 31%, and 7%) as cold-stratification condition. After 100 days of storage, seeds were placed on the filter paper after watering with distilled water in the petri dish and incubated at 10℃. Fifty percent of seeds stored at 2℃ with 59% water content had already germinated even in the storage room before germination test. Seeds with 59% and 54% water content stored at 2℃ and –2℃ germinated in a similar rate, but emergence of above ground part was higher in the seeds with 54% water content. Seeds with 31% and 7% water content stored at 2℃ and –2℃ showed low germination rate, because of fail in stratification or death. Seeds stored at –20℃ scored even lower germination rate and fail in emergence of above ground part. Conclusion : Seed water content and temperature during the cold-stratification period of ginseng seeds affected on the seed viability and germination rate, thus control of seed water content and storage temperature might improve the emergence rate of spring-sowed ginseng filed.

        The influence of seed maturity, stratification, and seed washing method on seed germination were investigated for establishment of seed propagation system in dropwort (Oenanthe stolonifera DC). Seed germination rate was increased as period of the seed ripening increased, especially the seed over 40 days after flowering showed the highest germination rate. The optimum period of cold stratification treatment to promote seed germination was about 8 weeks. The seed treated by a cold wet stratification with sand exhibited higher germination rate compared to the seed treated by a cold wet stratification without sand. The stratified seeds that were stored in the ground having fluctuating temperature were improved up to 19%, while stratification stored under constant temperature(4℃) did not improve germination rate. In addition, 8 weeks of stratification period under fluctuating temperature in the ground was most effective. Sodium hypochlorite, vital oxide, and distilled water were used as chemicals to remove the germination inhibitor of seed coat. Water washing of seed coat after soaking in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite and 0.0005% vital oxide for three minutes and 60 minutes respectively could effectively remove the germination inhibitors in the seed coat.

        This study was performed to identify optimal harvesting time of ginseng seeds and to examine the effect of GA3 treatment for improvement of seed stratification rate. Ginseng seeds harvested from Land race, Chunpoong and Yunpoong cultivar in July 20 were tested for stratification rate. It was shown that stratification rates of land race, Yunpoong and Chunpoong cultivar were 94.1%, 93.1%, and 82.6%, respectively. Seeds of Chunpoong cultivar harvested 10-15 days later showed a comparable stratification rate to that of Land race, indicating that late harvest of Chunpoong seeds is beneficial for the increase of stratification rate. The higher stratification rate was found in mature seeds (92.3%) than immature seeds (37.8%), both of which were harvested in July 20. Stratification rate of mature seeds harvested in July 15 was 87.5%, demonstrating optimal harvesting time of ginseng seeds with higher stratification rate is after mid-July. An exponential growth of endosperms of ginseng seeds was observed from early June to mid-June and then slow growth was observed. There was no obvious growth of embryos from fertilization to mid-August. After the this time, embryos quickly grew until late October. Thus, appropriate stratification control is essential during the period (from early September to late October) in order to optimize embryo growth and development. While no increase of stratification rate was observed in seeds treated with 50 ppm of GA3, significant increases were observed in seeds treated with 100 ppm of GA3. At this concentration of GA3, the stratification rate of Land race, Chunpoong and Yunpoong cultivar was 95.0%, 95.3%, and 96.5%, respectively.

        Based on the observation on 20, 23 and 26 July 2004, the distributions of temperature, salinity and stratification was investigated in relation to ebb, turn of tide and flood. The results are as follows: 1) The high temperature and low saline water with 23.5~24.0℃ and 32.4~33.0psu existed at Naro Island. 2) The cold surface water below 21.0℃ and 33.0~33.4psu appeared in the area near Gae Island and Geumo Island. 3) The cold and saline water, below 24.0℃ at the surface and 17.0℃ near the bottom, 32.8~33.8psu at the surface and 33.8~34.0psu near the bottom, existed in Sori Island. These waters were more saline compared to the South Sea Coastal Water with about 31.8psu. This suggests that the oceanic saline water intruded into the Bottol Bada through the area near Sori Island. The stratification appeared during all the observation periods due to a high solar radiation of 22MJ/m2, and a weak wind speed of 2.9m/s on the average while the mean speed of wind in July is around 3.9 m/s. It qualitatively suggested that the stratification was maintained during the observation periods because of a high solar radiation, a weak wind speed and intrusion of saline oceanic water.

        전차륜느 연안역에서 큰 스케일에서의 물질수송에 대한 관점에서 보면 조류보다 더 중요한 역할을 한다. 이러한 잔차류의 주된 성분은 조석 잔차류이며, 취송류, 밀도류 등도 이 흐름을 변동시키는 중요한 인자들이다. 이러한 연안역의 흐름의 특성을 규명하기 위해서는 3차원 유동모델의 적용이 필수적이다. 본 연구는 하천으로부터 담수유입에 의한 연안수역의 성층화 구조를 다루는데 초점을 두었으며, 이를 위해 3차원 밀도류모델을 적용하여 울산만의 유동을 재현하고, 담수유입에 의한 성층화 구조를 규명하였다. 그 결과 울산만과 같이 담수유입이 존재하는 반폐쇄 하구에서는 표층에서는 만외로 유출하고, 저층에서는 만내로 유입하는 흐름이 발생하였다. 또한 만내방향으로의 바람이 존재하는 경우에는 표층에서는 만내로 유입하는 흐름이, 저층에서는 이에 대한 보상류로 만외로 유출하는 흐름이 발생하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 해수유동결과는 해양목장 조성을 위한 인공어초투하, 연안표사 제어를 위한 잠제건설, 해저산맥 조성 등으로 인한 연직방향으로의 용승현상에 대한 규명이나 심층수 활용을 위한 기초연구에 적용이 가능할 것으로 사료된다.

        Seeds of burcucumber were treated with accelerated aging, cold-stratification, and light quality illuminated during desiccation to enhance their germination and seedling emergence. The germination was increased by aging and cold-stratification although the latter treatment showed greater effectiveness than the former one. In the combined treatment of aging 6 days at 45~circC and cold-stratification, the germination was promoted under longer period of cold-stratification to reach nearly 100% in 3 week cold-stratification on the ninth day from sowing. In the sequentially combined treatment of aging, cold-stratification, and light quality during 24 hour desiccation at 35~circC , no-stratified seeds showed the highest rate in red light treatment but the lowest in far-red light. This implies that the phytochrome action run during the desiccation of imbibed seeds. The red light exposure during drying for the cold-stratified seeds after aging accelerated the germination even more than the dark treatment and germinated 100% on the next day of sowing. It is concluded that the sequential treatment of aging, cold-stratification, and red light illumination during desiccation can highly promote percentage and speed of burcucumber seed germination.

        생약재로 이용되고 있는 활나물은 항암효과가 밝혀져 그 이용이 기대되나 종자발아가 불량하여 재배가 어려운 식물이다. 따라서 GA3, 저온, KNO3, acetone처리가 활나물의 종자발아에 미치는 영향을 구명하여 앞으로의 재배연구의 기초자료를 얻고자 본 연구를 실시하였던 바 그 결과를 다음과 같다. 1. 활나물 종자의 발아율은 GA3 처리시에는 0.1 mM에 12시간 암상태에서, 저온처리시에는 3℃에서 1주간 처리하는것에서 가장 높았다. 2. 발아율은 KNO3 처리시에는 400 mM에 6시간, acetone 처리시에는 200 mM에 6시간 처리하는 것에서 가장 높았으며, 이들 처리결과가 GA3 또는 저온처리의 최적결과보다 양호하였다. 3. 포장출현율은 200 mM의 acetone 용액에 6시간 처리하는 것보다 400 mM의 KNO3에 6시간 처리하는 것에서 높은 것으로 조사되어 활나물 종자처리는 KNO3를 이용하여 암상태에서 처리하는 것이 바람직한 처리방법으로 평가되었다.

        The spatial characteristics of stratification in Deukryang Bay were studied using observed data and analytical models. From the description of the density structure and its the potential energy anomaly (PEA) from observed data along longitudinal direction (from the mouth to head of the bay), we found that the stratification intensity could be changed strongly by density current effect during the spring-neap tidal cycle, and depth variation. To find out density current effect for the formation of the stratification in detail, we implemented a diagnostic approach by using the modified analytical model including density current, tidal current, surface heating and wind stirring. The model allowed for the observed similarities for the whole domain in the bay and increased tidal mixing efficiency value ε up to 0.006 - 0.007 as compared to the results without density current effect. We found that the density current effect was also an important key factor in determining the formation of the spatial distribution of stratification.
