Concrete masonry prisms are strengthened with steel fiber-reinforced mortar (SFRM) overlay and tested for compressive and diagonal tension strength. Masonry prisms are produced in poor condition considering standard workmanship for masonry buildings in Korea. Amorphous steel fibers are adopted for SFRM, and appropriate mixing ratios of SFRM are derived considering constructability and strength. Masonry prisms are strengthened with different fiber volume ratios, while numerous strengthened faces and additional reinforcing meshes are produced for compression and diagonal tension tests. Compression and diagonal tension strength are increased by up to 122% and 856%, respectively, and the enhancement effect for diagonal tension strength was superior compared to compression strength. Finally, the test results and strength prediction equations based on existing literature and regression analysis are compared.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to verify the effectiveness of the developed ultra-thin-continuously reinforced concrete partition (UT-CRCP) overlay method through a comparative analysis of the early-behavior of the UT-CRCP with a 100 mm cutting overlay of the existing JPCP.
METHODS : This study aims to minimize the vulnerability of the existing JPCP (joint section behavior) by overlaying the continuous reinforcement form to constrain joint behavior. For this purpose, the early-behavior of the JPCP section was measured and the early-behavior of the UT-CRCP section was compared with that of the cutting overlay of the same section. The testbed was constructed for comparative analysis of the two types of pavements and the early behavior was measured using the pure environmental loads, i.e., situations where there was no traffic load. For the UT-CRCP, which is a comparative test group, UT-CRCP was constructed approximately one year after the JPCP was constructed by milling the top of the existing JPCP by 100 mm.
RESULTS : 1) UT-CRCP was shown to effectively reduce the amount of crack width change on the surface by 17 %, compared to JPCP, by placing reinforcement inside the pavement. 2) The restricting effect of the UT-CRCP was analyzed by comparing the strain generated by the cross-section depth for the two pavement types. As a result, the restricting rate by depth (20, 80, 120, and 280 mm) was 68.4 %, 80.2 %, 89.2 %, and 26.7 %, respectively. 3) We reviewed the comprehensive gauge restricting rate at depths of 80 mm and 120 mm (80.2 % and 89.2 %, respectively) and the absolute value of behavior that is located at the ±20 mm of the interface of JPCP and UT-CRCP. Thus, it was possible to estimate that both layers of pavements exhibit the same behavior (tied) at the interface between the two pavement layers.
CONCLUSIONS : In this study, the early behavior of the BCO concept UT-CRCP overlay technique was analyzed and quantitatively presented to overcome the limitations of JPCP with relatively weak point behavior and to increase the commonality of aged concrete pavement to the performance of the new pavement.
PURPOSES : In many European countries, the fine-size exposed aggregate concrete pavement (EACP) technique has been adopted for a quiet pavement. However, different noise reduction levels were reported based on the mixture design and texture conditions. This study aims to suggest a quality control condition for achieving low-noise texture and a mixture design procedure for exposed aggregate concrete overlay (EACO), which will provide the optimum mixture of the surface texture that can reduce the tire-pavement noise.
METHODS : The tire-pavement noise is highly influenced by the pavement surface texture. The surface texture of the EACP can be quantified by the mean texture depth (MTD) and the exposed aggregate number (EAN). The optimum condition for the low-noise texture of the EACP was investigated herein based on the analysis of the review of the texture conditions and noise measurement in many EACP sites.
RESULTS : The MTD and EAN criteria can be derived according to the investigated relationship between noise and texture condition. The optimum mixture design to satisfy these criteria can be achieved by controlling the maximum size of the coarse aggregate and the S/a.
CONCLUSIONS: This study aimed to suggest a quality control condition for achieving low-noise texture and an optimum mixture design for EACO. As a result, we found that the early traffic opening of EACO can be achieved by using high early-strength cement.
PURPOSES: This study determines the life of asphalt overlay over old concrete pavements for various times of overlay, using the actual 30- year performance history of the Jungbu Expressway. The results from this study can be used as the basis for decisions on the proper time for overlay, and can also provide information for life cycle cost analysis.
METHODS : The maintenance history of the Jungbu Expressway and traffic database 30 years after construction were analyzed. The durations between the first overlay and subsequent overlay for each section of the pavement were analyzed for the entire Jungbu Expressway. The durations were analyzed in terms of both years and the ESAL traffic volumes.
RESULTS : 1. The life of the asphalt overlay over the old concrete pavements depended on the time of overlay in terms of both age and cumulative ESALs. A strong correlation was observed between the overlay life and the cumulative ESALs at the time of overlay. 2. The life of the second overlay at the same section was significantly shorter than the first overlay. For JCP, the average lives of the first and second overlays were 6.1 and 2.4 years, respectively. For CRCP, they were 4.8 and 2.7 years, respectively. The main reason for the shorter life of the overlay for CRCP may be that the overlay time was generally later than that for the JCP. 3. The life of the overlay was analyzed according to its materials. SMA exhibited the best performance, followed by CRM.
CONCLUSIONS: Life of the overlay reduced with the time of overlay especially in terms of cumulative ESALs, and the life of the second overlay at the same section was significantly shorter than the first overlay. The results can be used in the decision making of the time of overlay and in the life cycle cost analysis.
PURPOSES : In Korea, asphalt overlay has been used as a typical alternative rehabilitation method for deteriorated pavements. However, asphalt overlay has problems due to poor bonding of the asphalt overlay and the old concrete. Recently, concrete overlays, which have advantages such as long-term durability and high structural capacity to carry heavy traffic, have been considered for rehabilitation construction. However, concrete overlays have limitations such as difficulty in opening to traffic and pavement noise. Recently, an appropriate fine-size exposed aggregate concrete pavement technique was reported to solve these problems. Therefore, this study aims to suggest an optimum mixture design of fine-size exposed aggregate concrete overlay (EACO) that can ensure low noise and early strength.
METHODS : The optimum mixture design of fine-size EACO is determined to ensure adequate structural performance for early traffic opening and good functional performances such as low noise. Therefore, the optimum mixture proportion is determined based on the optimum design of aggregate content to produce a low-noise pavement texture by controlling the exposed aggregate number (EAN) and mean texture depth (MTD).
RESULTS : The water-cement ratio and unit cement ratio were used to determine the mixture designs to achieve workability and adequate strength for early traffic opening. The texture was determined by selecting the maximum size of coarse aggregate smaller than 10 mm with an S/a ratio of less than 30% for low noise. With these mixture proportions, the EAN and MTD were 50±5 / 25cm2 and 1.0±0.2 mm. Respectively, which meet the criteria for EACO.
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, an optimum mixture design of EACO for early traffic opening and low noise is suggested by using earlyhigh strength cement, and the pavement texture is implemented considering EAN and MTD. In addition, a pavement surface texture criterion is suggested for the quality control of EACO.
PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to determine the effective maintenance method for a deteriorated jointed plain concrete pavement by evaluating the long-term performance of the repaired concrete overlay sections.
METHODS: Long-term performance evaluation was conducted for the test section at the intersection between SeoPa and IlDong in National Road No. 37. Firstly, the distress conditions of the concrete pavement, which was constructed in December 2003, were evaluated by referring to the existing report. Secondly, the results of pretreatment, material properties, and initial performance evaluation were analyzed for the overlay test conducted in 2011. Finally, a field survey was carried out using visual inspection and nondestructive testing with a FWD in August 2018, and long-term performance evaluation was conducted for about seven years after maintenance.
RESULTS: Visual inspection of the old concrete pavement showed severe damage such as joint spalling and asphalt patching. The cores taken from the old concrete had indirect tensile strength of 2.6-3.8 MPa. It is difficult to determine the freeze-thaw resistance because the average amount of air was only 1.6-2.2%, and spacing factor values were over 400㎛ regardless of location. During maintenance, overlay and partial depth repair were performed by applying three types of overlay materials which are typical in Korea. On the material side, high compressive strength (over 40 MPa) and chlorine ion penetration resistance (less than 1,000 coulomb) at 56 days were achieved. In August 2018, seven years after maintenance, visual inspection and nondestructive testing using FWD were conducted for long-term performance evaluation. Regardless of the maintenance materials, surface deficiencies such as spalling and map cracking occurred extensively near the joint.
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, if the strength and durability index of aged concrete pavement is low, then it was determined that partial depth repair at the joint is not an effective maintenance alternative. In the case of overlay, the durability of the overlay material is considered the most important factor. In the absence of adequate reinforcement at the joint of the distressed concrete pavement, freeze-thaw damage caused by moisture penetration through the joint and failure of the old concrete are repeated, making it difficult to ensure long-term durability.
In Korea, concrete pavements were first applied to highways in 1981 and as a result of continued increase in length over the past years, 2,592 km of concrete pavement network is currently in service, of which 1,399 km(54%) of concrete pavements is 10 years or older, and 233km(9%) is 20 years or older. The length of concrete pavement sections nationwide has been steadily on the rise every year (EXTRI, 2017). Approximately 54% of current concrete pavement highway network will reach the service life limit in 2025 which means around 660 billion won is needed for future pavement repair project (EXTRI, 2017). Given that concrete pavements beyond design life still have a remaining service life, it is economically advantageous to repair them before reconstruction. Asphalt overlays are a major repair method for older concrete pavements. Depending on the concrete pavement condition, thickness and mixture of asphalt overlays are determined. Service life of asphalt overlays varies by the presence, time and size of cracks in existing concrete pavements and reflecting crack at joints. Temperature change of concrete pavement is among the major reaction parameters of reflecting crack. Reflecting crack develops when asphalt bottom-up cracking by longitudinal shrinkage and expansion due to temperature change of the concrete base layer, top-down cracking by temperature difference between top and bottom of concrete, and shear stress by traffic loading are combined (Baek, 2010). Crack and joint behaviors of concrete pavement vary between the base layer and the concrete surface of composite pavement system, and different conductivity by mixture and thickness of asphalt overlay leads to temperature change of concrete base course. This study measured temperatures of each layer of diverse composite pavements in place on site and analyzed differences in temperature change of concrete base layer depending on mixture and thickness of asphalt overlays. Overlay thickness parameters were 5cm and 10cm, two values most widely used, while mixture parameters were SMA and porous asphalt. Based on temperature change of concrete surface, this study also evaluated the difference of temperature change in concrete base layer with an asphalt overlay on top. Findings from this study are expected to be utilized for studies on mechanism and modeling of reflecting crack in old concrete pavements with asphalt overlays.
PURPOSES : In this study, the pavement condition of non-mill-and-overlay and mill-and-overlay on deteriorated concrete pavement was compared. In addition, the suitable time to perform the initial overlay was investigated.METHODS : The condition of the pavement sections that were not additionally overlaid on non-mill-and-overlay or mill-and-overlay on deteriorated concrete pavements was investigated according to overlay pavement age. The condition of non-mill-and-overlay and mill-andoverlay sections of expressway route 25, which has more information on overlay history than other routes, was compared according to the number of times of overlay. The relation between the concrete pavement condition just before the overlay and the number of times of overlay was investigated for the non-mill-and-overlay and mill-and-overlay sections for which the first overlay was performed in the same year.RESULTS: The pavement condition of the non-mill-and-overlay sections was better than that of the mill-and-overlay sections, showing higher Highway Pavement Condition Index(HPCI) regardless of overlay pavement age. The number of reflection crackings of the non-mill-and-overlay sections was smaller than that of the mill-and-overlay sections. As a result of observing the cores obtained from the overlay sections, the proportion of the deteriorated non-mill-and-overlay sections was smaller than that of the mill-and-overlay sections. The SD measured just before the overlay on the concrete pavement for which additional overlay was not performed was smaller than that for which additional overlay was performed regardless of the milling of the concrete slab surface. The HPCI of the concrete pavement for which overlay was performed just once was higher than that for which overlay was performed more than one time.CONCLUSIONS : Accordingly, it was concluded that the condition of the non-mill-and-overlay sections was better than that of the milland-overlay sections. In addition, the better the condition of concrete pavement just before the initial overlay, the longer the duration of the overlay effect.
PURPOSES : So far, aged cement concrete pavement on express highways has been rehabilitated mainly with asphalt concrete inlay. However, potholes were the major problem, and they shortened the life of the inlay mainly owing to the poor drainage of water once it infiltrated the interface of the concrete and asphalt. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance and economic efficiency of asphalt overlay and inlayMETHODS: Overlay and inlay were compared through accelerated pavement testing, and a life-cycle cost analysis was conducted in this study using the CA4PRS program.RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : It was found from accelerated pavement testing that the overlay exhibited reflective crack resistance that was more than twice as effective as that of inlay. The total cost (construction cost + user cost) within the analysis period (20 years) of the overlay was 37% lower than that of the inlay.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to verify the property of self-healing, and to propose an appropriate duration for wet curing of bridge deck concrete overlays. METHODS: In this study, reinforced bars were inserted into concrete molds in order to prevent brittle fracture and induced cracks in the concrete resulting from indirect tension mode. The induced time of concrete cracking was 3 to 7 days, following which the concrete specimens were cured in water. The resulting concrete crack width was measured using image analysis equipment. Additionally, the self-healing tests were performed using the following three mixtures: OPC, SFC, and LMC. RESULTS: Concrete mixtures with crack widths of 150㎛ or lower were completely healed by Day 28. Hydrates of crack fills were found to be the calcium carbonate. CONCLUSIONS: The cement-based mixtures exhibit properties of self-healing. Considering these properties, it is necessary to increase the curing duration of concrete overlays for bridge decks.
In a wide spectrum of pavement rehabilitation techniques, the application of thin asphalt overlay on existing concrete pavements have shown its ability to restore the functional capacity of the pavement system as well as maintain structural capacity. Although, prior researches stated that it does not add to the structural capacity of the existing pavement, the insulation generated by the asphalt overlay can affect the behavior of the discontinuities in the continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) system by reducing the magnitude of its movement. The investigation of crack movement behaviors of the CRCP in Chungbu Expressway was conducted in 2-phases: without overlay and with overlay. Crackmeters were installed at selected crack locations and measurements were collected. In the second phase of the investigation, crackmeters were installed at the concrete layer of the CRCP before a 2-inch asphalt overlay was applied. Results have shown that the crack movements under a thin asphalt overlay have reduced by 80% which indicates an effective insulation of the CRCP.
PURPOSES : Recently, bonded concrete overlay has been used as an alternative solution in concrete pavement rehabilitation since its material properties are similar to those of the existing concrete pavements. Deteriorated concrete pavements need rapid rehabilitation in order to prevent traffic jams on Korean expressways. Moreover, speedy and effective repair methods are required. Therefore, the use of bonded concrete overlay with ultra-rapid hardening cement has increased in an effort to reopen promptly the expressways in Korea. However, mobile mixer is required for ultra-rapid hardening cement concrete mixing in the construction site. The use of mobile mixer causes various disadvantages aforementioned such as limitation of the construction supply, open-air storage of mixing materials, increase in construction cost, and etc. In this study, therefore, hydration accelerator in-situ mixing on polymer modified concrete produced in concrete plant is attempted in order to avoid the disadvantages of existing bonded concrete overlay method using ultra-rapid hardening cement.
METHODS: Bonded concrete overlay materials using ultra-rapid hardening cement should be meet all the requirements including structural characteristics, compatibility, durability for field application. Therefore, This study aimed to evaluate the application of hydration accelerator in-situ mixing on polymer modified concrete by evaluating structural characteristics, compatibility, durability and economic efficiency for bonded concrete overlay.
RESULTS : Test results of structural characteristics showed that the compressive, flexural strength and bond strength were exceed 21MPa, 3.15MPa and 1.4MPa, respectively, which are the target strengths of four hours age for the purpose of prompt traffic reopening. In addition, tests of compatibility, such as drying shrinkage, coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus of elasticity, and durability (chloride ions penetration resistance, freezing-thawing resistance, scaling resistance, abrasion resistance and crack resistance), showed that the hydration accelerator in-situ mixing on polymer modified concrete were satisfied the required criteria.
CONCLUSIONS: It was known that the hydration accelerator in-situ mixing on polymer modified concrete overlay method was applicable for bonded concrete overlay and was a good alternative method to substitute the existing bonded concrete overlay method since structural characteristics, compatibility, durability were satisfied the criteria and its economic efficiency was excellent compare to the existing bonded concrete overlay methods.
More than sixty percent of highways in Korea were constructed with concrete pavement to carry the heavy traffic loads due to the economic development of this country. The service life of some pavements are close to the end, therefore, they requires the maintenances, rehabilitations and reconstructions to improve their structural performances.According to the similarity of material properties to the concrete pavement, bonded concrete overlay isa good rehabilitation technique used steadily in Korea. However, it is recently reported that the bonded concrete overlays in some highways expose the early distresses and it is assumed that the poor bonding is a cause of this problem. Additionally, the poor bonding of bonded concrete overlay is caused by the bond strength that is less than the bond strength criterion. The pre-investigation of various concrete overlays is conducted in laboratory to determine the possible influence factors reducing the bond strength and it indicates that there are two possible factors affecting the bond strength: the concrete overlay types and the substrate conditions. The study investigates the vulnerable factor between the two factors based on theevaluation of the in-situ bond strength data of bonded concrete overlay gathered from some highways in Korea. The bond strength data is collected from two different application areas: the new constructionand the rehabilitation projects. The new construction and the rehabilitation projects used Latex-modified Concrete (LMC) and Ultra-rapid Hardening Latex-modified concrete (URH-LMC), respectively as the concrete overlay. The evaluation of in-situ bond strength is to determine the percentage of unacceptable bond strength in each projectto study the effect of different types of concrete overlay. Moreover, the percentage of bonding failure modes having the bond strengths less than the criterion is also measured to study the effect of substrate condition. As a result, substrate condition is the vulnerable factor affecting the poor bonding and causing the early distresses in bonded concrete overlay.
PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of asphalt and geotextile interlayer on the fracture behavior of unbonded concrete overlay through a laboratory composite beam test. METHODS: In order to evaluate the effect of interlayer materials on the fracture behavior of unbonded concrete overlay, a laboratory test of composite beam was conducted with different types of interlayer. The test results of the composite beam using two types of geotextile interlayer with different thicknesses were compared to the test results of the composite beam using the tradition type of asphalt interlayer. The unbonded concrete overlay on the existing concrete pavement without interlayer was set for the control condition. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION : Overall, the laboratory composite beam test results did show the effect of asphalt and geotextile interlayer on the fracture behavior of composite concrete beams. The three-layer geotextile interlayer and HMA layer both increase the peak load when the first macrocrack occurs in the top concrete beam, while the HMA interlayer causes the smallest load drop percentage after the first macrocrack. The three-layer geotextile did show better performance than the single-layer geotextile through the greater peak load and smaller load drop percentage. It indicates that the thickness of geotextile interlayer will affect the fracture behavior of unbonded concrete overlay and the thicker geotextile interlayer is recommended.
