The present study investigated the hypothesis that a extremely low frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) partially suppresses the synthesis of human growth hormone (HGH) in a group of 28 primary schoolchildren living nearby and 60 primary schoolchildren aged 12 years living far away from overhead transmission power lines from December 2003 to April 2004 in Seoul, Korea. The mean personal exposure levels of the primary schoolchildren living nearby overhead transmission power line were 0.37 μT, whereas the levels for the primary schoolchildren living away from overhead transmission power line was 0.05 μT. From simple analyses, the mean growth hormone levels in the primary schoolchildren living nearby were lower than away from overhead transmission power line, and statistically significant differences in the levels of the growth hormone (p = 0.0316), whereas not statistically significant differences in the levels of the growth hormone related to the distance from residence to power line less and more than 100 m by cut-off point (p = 0.4017). In conclusion, these results may indicate that urinary levels of nocturnal growth hormone are altered in primary schoolchildren exposed to extremely low frequency magnetic field at overhead transmission power line.
토목구조물에 능동형 질량동조감쇠장치를 설치할 경우에 설치장소의 크기는 제한되며 그에 따라 질량감쇠증기의 최대진폭이 제한되는 것이 일반적이다. 이 연구에서는 벽체 스프링과 고정장지를 이용하여 능동형 질량동조감쇠장치의 진폭을 제한하면서도 제어성능을 적절히 유지시킬 수 있는 제한진폭 능동형 질량동조감쇠장 치를 제안하였다. 이 제어장치는 질량감쇠장치의 진폭이 작을 경우에는 일반적인 능동형 질량동조감쇠장치로 작동하고 진폭이 정해진 값을 초과하면 제한진폭 능동형 질량동조감쇠장치로 작동하게 된다. 이러한 동작원리의 수학적 정식화를 통하여 새로운 제어 알고리즘을 제시하였다. 제한진폭 능동형 질량동조감쇠장치의 다양한 설계인자에 대한 파라미터 연구를 수행하였고, 그 성능을 기존의 능동형 질량동조감쇠장치와 비교하여 살펴보았다. 제한진폭 능동형 질량동조감쇠장치의 정현하중 및 충격하중에 대하여 일반적 능동형 질량동조감쇠장치와 비교하여 제어효과가 크게 떨어지지 않으면서 질량감쇠장치의 최대진폭을 상당히 줄일 수 있어 그 유용성을 확인할 수 있었다. 랜덤하중에 대한 해석의 경우는 질량감쇠장치의 최대진폭이 크게 감소하면서 주구조물의 최대진폭은 거의 증가되지 않는 개선된 결과가 관찰되었다

In order to prevent the oxide formation on the surface of nano-size iron particles and thereby to improve the oxidation resistance, iron nanoparticles synthesized by a chemical vapor condensation method were directly soaked in hexadecanethiol solution to coat them with a polymer layer. Oxygen content in the polymer-coated iron nanoparticles was significantly lower than that in air-passivated particles possessing iron-core/oxide-shell structure. Accordingly, oxidation resistance of the polymer-coated particles at an elevated temperature below in air was times higher than that of the air- passivated particles.
Aluminum matrix composites strengthened by the quasi-crystalline (QC) phase were developed in the present study. The icosahedral phase was produced by gravity casting and subsequent heat treatment. The mechanical milling process was utilized in order to produce the Al/QC composite powders. The microstructures of the composite powders were examined by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The composite powders were subsequently canned, degassed and extruded in order to produce the bulk composite extrusions with various volume fractions of QC. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the extrusions were examined by OM, SEM, Vickers hardness tests and compression tests. It was found that the microstructures of the Al/QC composites were uniform and the mechanical properties could be significantly improved by the addition of the QC phase.
