The biosorption abilities of different parts of waste brown seaweeds and their derivatives to remove heavy metals(Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu, Fe, Ni, Mn) from waste water were evaluated. The two parts of waste brown seaweeds (Undaria pinnatifida) were stems and sporophyls, and the brown seaweed derivatives were alginic fibers, active carbon added alginate(AC-alginate) and dealginate. The abilities of the sporophyls to adsorb the heavy metal ions were higher than those of stems, and those of alginates were slightly higher than those of dealginate in single ion solution. With decreasing the size of biosorbents, the velocity and the amount of adsorption increased. The abilities of alginate to remove the heavy metal ions increased in multi-ion solutions by adding active carbon to alginate. The selectivity of these biosorbents(alginate, AC-alginate) to lead ion was highest and to manganese ion was lowest.

In order to study the long-term change of heavy metal concentrations in the Kumho river water, water analysis was conducted at l3sites surrounding the Kumho river system for l8times from September 1993 to August 1999. Analytical items for the study of water quality are Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn and Pb. The six year term studied in this work was divided into Part Ⅰ and Part Ⅱ, which covers the period from September 1993 to August 1996 and the period from September 1996 to August 1999, respectively. The mean concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn and Pb in the unit of ppm for the PartⅠ period showed 0.032, 0.025, 0.006, 0.006, 0.050, 0.053 and 0.019, respectively. The mean concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn and Pb in the unit of ppm for the Part Ⅱ period showed 0.001, 0.001, 0.001, 0.004, 0.020, 0.002 and 0.002, respectively. The heavy metal concentrations in the Kumho river water for the second period were found to be decreased by 1/32, 1/25, 1/6, 1/1.5, 1/2.5, 1/26.5 and 1/9.5 for Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn and Pb, respectively. The present results clearly indicate that the water quality in the Kumho river is improving in terms of heavy metal contaminations.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Ca(OH)2 and CO2 additions on the corrosion of metal coupons (ductile iron, galvanized steel, copper and stainless steel). Corrosion rate and released metal ion concentration of ductile iron and galvanized steel was decreased by adjusting alkalinity, calcium hardness and pH with Ca(OH)2 & CO2 additions named CCPP (Calcium Carbonate Precipitation Potential) index control process. But the effects of Ca(OH)2 & CO2 additions on copper and stainless steel were less than those on ductile iron and galvanized steel. When ductile iron coupon was exposed to water treated with Ca(OH)2 & CO2 additions, the main components of corrosion product formed on its surface were CaCO3 and Fe2O3 or Fe3O4, which often reduce the corrosion rate by prohibiting oxygen transport to the metal surface.

Dust samples were collected from 17 middle and high schools in the Jeonju-city. Heavy metal concentrations were determined for the dry-deposited dusts from indoor and outdoor of classroom and playground of each sampling site. Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in indoor's dusts were highly concentrated. Also heavy metal concentrations in outdoor's dusts were similar to that of indoor's dusts. Concentrations of Cd, Cu and Zn in the dusts were much higher than the world average contents in soil and environmental orientation value. These levels are similar to those of the dust samples at middle schools located at Kangseo-gu and Yangchon-gu, Seoul. Playground dusts in 6 schools exhibited the enhanced heavy metal pollution with a pollution index (by Kloke) greater than 1.0. Most indoor and outdoor dusts exhibited the enhanced heavy metal pollution with a pollution index (by Culbard et al.) greater than 1.0.

In order to examine the availability and effectiveness of crab shell for the removal of heavy metals in aqueous solution, the crab shell was compared with cation exchange resin (CER), zeolite, granular activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) on aspects of heavy metal removal capacity, rate and efficiency. In the removal of Pb, Cd and Cr, the heavy metal removal capacity of crab shell was higher than those of any other sorbents (CER, zeolite, GAC, PAC), and the order of heavy metal removal capacity was crab shell > CER > zeolite > PAC =~GAC. However, in the removal of Cu, the result of crab shell was slightly lower than that of CER. The initial heavy metal removal rate was affected by the sorts of sorbents and metals. In all heavy metals, the heavy metal removal rate of crab shell was higher than those of any other sorbents. Under the heavy metal concentration of 1.0 mmole/ℓ, the heavy metal removal efficiency of crab shell was maintained as 93∼100 %, which was much higher than those of any other sorbents.

The hydroxyapatite (HAp) for the present study was prepared by precipitation method in semiconductor fabrication and the crystallized at ambient to950℃ for 30min in electric furnace. The ion-exchange characteristics of HAp for various heavy metal ions such as Cd2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Al3+, and Cr6+ in aqueous solution has been investigated. The removal ratio of various metal ions for HAp were investigated with regard to reaction time, concentration of standard solution, amount of HAp and pH of solution. The order of the ions exchanged amount was as follows: Pb2+, Fe3+>Cu2+>Zn2+>Al3+>Cd2+>Mn2+>Cr6+. The Pb2+ ion was readily removed by the HAp, even in the strongly acidic region. The maximum amount of the ion-exchange equilibrium for Pb2+ ion was about 45 ㎎/gram of HAp. The HAp would seem to be possible agent for the removal of heavy metal ions in waste water by recycling of waste sludge in semiconductor fabrication.
