본 연구는 1995년 10월부터 1997년 10월까지 제주대학교 동물사육장 초지시험포장에서 초종혼파조합 차이에 따른 잡초억제 효과를 구명키 위해 수행되었다. 시험은 주구 2 처리(보조초종 이탈리안 라이그라스와 켄터키 블루그라스)와 세구 4처리(보조초종 단파; T1, 툴페스큐 + 오차드그라스 + 라디노 클로바; T2, 페레니얼 라이그라스 + 오차드그라스 + 라디노 클로바; T3, 오차드그라스 + 라디노 클로바; T4)를 3반복하여 분할구 배치법으로 처리되었다. 목초의 2년간 평균 건물수량은 주구 즉 보조초종 이탈리안 라이그라스와 켄터키 블루그라스에서 각각 15,437kg/ha, 14,581kg/ha이었고, 세구 즉 T1, T2, T3 및 T4에서는 각각 14,815kg/ha, 15,407kg/ha, 14,629kg/ha, 15,187kg/ha였으며 모두 통계적으로 유의적 차이를 얻지 못하였다. 그러나 2년차 1차수확시 주구간에는 뚜렷한 차이를 발견치 못했으나 세구간 즉 T1(보조초종 단파)구가 3,376kg/ha로서 가장 낮은 건물수량을 보였고 T3, T4가 각각 4,591kg/ha, 4,816kg/ha로서 T1의 건물수량보다 유의적 증가를 보였다. 2년째 평균 건물수량 역시 세구간에 유의적 차이를 얻었으며 T4가 가장 높은 수량을 보였고 T1 및 T3구에서 낮은 생산성을 보였다. 초년도 봄에 이탈리안 라이그라스를 보조초종으로 이용하는 것이 켄터키 블루그라스보다 잡초억제에 도움이 되었으나 여름 이후에는 그 효과가 없어져서 서로 비슷한 추세였다. 2년차 말에 보조초종 켄터키 블루그라스 이용으로 다소 잡초를 감소케 하는 경향이었지만 큰 차이는 없었다. 2년 전체적으로 볼 때 오차드 그라스를 조합한 구(T2, T3 및 T4)가 보조초종 단파구(T1) 보다 잡초율을 낮게 했다. 목초의 조단백질은 처리별 효과를 얻지 못했으며 10월 수확시 보조초종 이탈리안 라이그라스구의 NDF와 ADF 함량이 켄터키 블루그라스 구의 것에서 보다 높은 함량을 보였다(P<0.05). 7월 수확시에 켄터키 블루그라스 구의 ADF 함량이 이탈리안 라이그라스구의 것 보다 고도히 유의적 차이로서 높았다(P<0.01). 결론적으로 초년도 봄에 보조초종 이탈리안 라이그라스를 혼파하므로 잡초 억제에 도움이 되었으나 건물생산에 뚜렷한 효과를 주지 못하였다. 본 시험결과로서 오차드그라스 조합이 잡초 억제에 가장 유리한 초종이었으며 건물수량도 가장 높았다.
