The purpose of this study was to improve the nutrition and the permeability of functional plants by using cryogenic grinding technology. Barley sprouts, Curcuma longa L., Dendropanax morbifera LEV., Phellinus linteus were dried, ground and extracted in different temperature conditions. Powder size of barley sprouts and Curcuma longa L. were about 50 μm and Dendropanax morbifera LEV. and Phellinus linteus were about 20 μm. Cryogenic ground of Barley sprouts preserved 18.27-124.65% of nutrients such as protein, ash, carbohydrate, beta carotene, minerals, vitamins. Cryogenic grinding powder of Curcuma longa L. show high nutrients retention rate of lipid and carbohydrate. Permeability was measured by Parallel Artificial Membrane Permeability Assay (PAMPA) to predict passive gastrointestinal absorption. Permeability of saponarin, which is marker compound of Barley sprouts, is 9.88 times higher in cryogenic grinding powder than ambient grinding powder. Curcumin permability is 3.1 times higher than ambient grinded powder. As a result, particle size, nutrition, protein digestion degree and permeability demonstrated a positive relationship with the decreasing grinding temperature for the powders. These results confirm that the cryogenic grinding method had good suitability to increase functionality of plants, since it could minimize the heat generated while processing and effectively reduce the particle size.

In Volvariella volvacea, a species of edible mushroom, cryogenic autolysis is a typical part of abnormal metabolism. Previous functional annotation cluster analyses of cold-induced gene expression profiles have shown that the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 (UBE2) and the cyclin-like F-box domain (FBDC) form the functional clusters. Among them, a specific FBDC gene has been found to be in response to cold stress and correlated with the cryogenic autolysis of V. volvacea. In this study, analysis of gene expression profiling showed that only one type of UBE2 in V. volvacea (UBEV2) was significantly up-regulated. Further quantitative real-time PCR analysis confirmed that the expression of UBEV2 was significantly up-regulated (P < 0.05) after cold-treatment lasting 4, 6, and 8 h. Western-bolt analyses confirmed that the protein expression of UBEV2 was in response to cold stress. This provided evidence that UBEV2 was a cold stress-responsive gene and closely correlated with cryogenic autolysis. The specific distribution of UBEV2 in recently diverged herb decay fungi indicated that UBEV2 was not evolutionarily correlated with early diverging fungi. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that UBEV2 was generated by horizontal gene transfer (HGT) from the ancestry of Selaginella moellendorffii UBE2. Further relative time estimation and detection of natural selection showed that there has been recent positive selection after HGT in UBEV2. Molecular modeling and logo analysis showed that the cysteine-cysteine motif is the characteristic of the UBEV2 family. These observations indicate that UBEV2 and FBDV1 are the newly discovered cold stress-responsive genes correlated with the cryogenic autolysis of V. volvacea.

For future space IR missions, such as SPICA, it is crucial to establish an experimental method for eval- uating the performance of mid-IR detectors. In particular, the wavelength dependence of the sensitivity is important but difficult to be measured properly. We are now preparing a testing system for mid-IR Si:As/Si:Sb detectors on SPICA. We have designed a cryogenic optical system in which IR signal light from a pinhole is collimated, passed through an optical filter, and focused onto a detector. With this system, we can measure the photoresponse of the detector for various IR light using optical lters with different wavelength properties. We have fabricated aluminum mirrors which are adopted to minimize thermal distortion effects and evaluated the surface figure errors. The total wavefront error of the optical system is 1.3 μm RMS, which is small enough for the target wavelengths (20-37 μm) of SPICA. The point spread function measured at a room temperature is consistent with that predicted by the simulation. We report the optical performance of the system at cryogenic temperatures.

In this study, the effects of cryogenic treatment cycles on the residual stress and mechanical properties of 7075 aluminum alloy (Al7075) samples, in the form of a tube-shaped product with a diameter of 500 nm, were investigated. Samples were first subjected to solution treatment at 470˚C, followed by cryogenic treatment and aging treatment. The residual stress and mechanical properties of the samples were systematically characterized. Residual stress was measured with a cutting method using strain gauges attached on the surface of the samples; in addition, tensile strength and Vickers hardness tests were performed. The detailed microstructure of the samples was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that samples with 85 % relief in residual stress and 8% increase in tensile strength were achieved after undergoing three cycles of cryogenic treatments; this is in contrast to the samples processed by conventional solution treatment and natural aging (T4). The major reasons for the smaller residual stress and relatively high tensile strength for the samples fabricated by cryogenic treatment are the formation of very small-sized precipitates and the relaxation of residual stress during the low temperature process in uphill quenching. In addition, samples subjected to three cycles of cryogenic treatment demonstrated much lower residual stress than, and similar tensile strength compared to, those samples subjected to one cycle of cryogenic treatment or artificial aging treatment.

The use of LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) in transport is a suitable option to power, large long distance trucks in areas where gas is transported as LNG because there are indigenous gas supplies and no gas network. The use of LNG in passenger cars is far less viable because on average passenger cars stand idle more often, which would give rise to high evaporative losses. Therefore, the use of LNG requires storage facilities for the cold (-162℃) liquid natural gas at the roadside refueling stations and special fuelling equipment which can handle cryogenic temperatures. This paper investigated fuel supply system of a LNG cylinder, especially adiabatic performance and heat exchanger.

Inconel 718 alloy has excellent mechanical properties at room temperature, high temperature and cryogenic conditions. UTS of base metal is about 900MPa at room temperature; this is increased up to 1300MPa after heat treatment & aging-hardening. Mechanical properties of Inconel 718 Alloy were similar to those shown in the the results for tensile test; mechanical properties of Inconel 718 alloy's GTAW were similar to those of base metal's properties at room temperature. Mechanical properties at cryogenic conditions were better than those at room temperature. Heat-treated Inconel 718, non- filler metal GTAW on Inconel 718 and GTAW used filler metal on Inconel 718's UTS was 1400MPa at cryogenic condition. As a result, the excellent mechanical properties of Inconel 718 alloy under cryogenic conditions was proved through tensile tests under cryogenic conditions. In addition, weldability of Inconel 718 alloy under cryogenic conditions was superior to that of its base-metal. In this case, UTS of hybrid joint (IS-G) at -100˚C was 900MPa. Consequently, UTS of Inconel 718 alloy is estimated to increase from -100˚C to a specific temperature below -100˚C. Therefore, Inconel 718 alloy is considered a pertinent material for the production of Lox Pipe under cryogenic conditions.

The Cold Neutron Research Facility(CNRF) is being built to produce a cold neutron which has peculiar physical property. In-Pool Assembly(IPA) was manufactured in a domestic factory, which is composed of moderator cell, heat exchanger, vacuum chamber, joint flange assembly and bracket etc. We had difficulties with the mechanical fabrication process due to the thin moderator cell. The special flange for the double flexible piping was developed. The tests of moderator cell, heat exchanger, vacuum chamber, double flexible pipe and IPA include the pressure test, normal temperature leak test and low temperature leak test. The moderator cell and heat exchanger were tested in the severe environmental condition and the burst tests of moderator cell were carried out. Above all, the bursting point took place at the area of the 0.01mm thinner place. It shows that the severe environmental test affects the bursting strength. The double flexible pipe welding at the IPA top plate was related with the arrangement of moderator cell in the vacuum chamber. Therefore the connecting welding of the double flexible pipe linked to sequent of the vacuum piping, helium piping and hydrogen piping. The fabrication, test and assembling of cryogenic in radiation zone were developed.

Machinability improvement by the use of liquid nitrogen in cryogenic machining has been reported in various studies. This has been mostly attributed to the cooling effect of liquid nitrogen. However, No study has been found in discussion on whether liquid nitrogen possesses lubrication effect in cryogenic cutting. This paper presents lubrication mechanism related to chip microstructure. The friction reduction was further reflected In larger shear angle and less secondary deformation in the chip microstructures.

In this paper some physical evidences indicate that reduced friction occurs in an cryogenic machining process, in which LN2 is applied to the selected cutting zone. LN2 also reduced the tool wear rate to a great extent and elongated the tool life up to four times compared to emulsion cooling.

This paper presents some physical evidences indicating that reduced friction occurs in an cryogenic machining process, in which LN2 is applied selectively in well-controlled jets to the selected cutting zone. In machining tests, cryogenic machining reduced the force component in the feed direction, indicating that the chip slides on the tool rake face with lower friction. This study also found that the effectiveness of LN2 lubrication depends on the approach how LN2 is applied regarding cutting forces related.
