This study aims to evaluate the relationship with the concentration and odor intensity using the odor sensory method for 5 types of aldehyde compounds and styrene. For the measurement, 13 panelists were selected by several criteria through a panel test. The estimation showed that the correlation of the concentration with odor intensity for the 12 compounds including of the sulfur compounds, ammonia, and trimethylamine can be reasonably expressed by the equation I = Aㆍlog C + B (I : odor Intensity, C : material concentration, A : material constant, B : constant). The equations show the sensivities of intensity change for the change of concentration. According to the increase of concentration the odor intensities for acetaldehyde and iso-valeraldehyde increase larger than for the other aldehydes. Regulation standards of 12 species of odor substance concentraton and odor intensity by using the correlation equation was reviewed for adequacy. It was evaluated that the regulation standards on site boundary in operation are too low for NH₃, DMDS, and iso-valeraldehyde and too high for TMA. The result of this study is suggested to be used as a base data for research on measures to improve the regulation standards for complex odor concentration on site boundary in operation.

This study aims to evaluate the relationship with the concentration and odor intensity using the odor sensory method for 4 types of sulfur compounds, ammonia, and trimethylamine. For the measurement, 13 panelists were selected by several criteria through a panel test. Panelists chosen for their closely similar sensitivities provide more reproducible values. The estimation showed that the correlation of the concentration with odor intensity for the 6 compounds can be reasonably expressed by the equation I=Aㆍlog C+B (I: Odor Intensity, C: material concentration, A: material constant, B: constant). The result of this study is suggested to be used as a base data for research on measures to improve the regulation standards for complex odor concentration on site boundary in operation, as well as a correlation between the concentration and odor intensity for the designated foul odor substances, and their characteristics.

The present study investigated the concentration of gaseous odor emitted from paint manufacturing facilities and the cases of improvement for odor emission reduction. It was found that the companies located in odor management district observed the odor emission standard more than the companies located in other local industrial complex. We ascribed the reason to the continuous crackdown by local government and voluntary efforts of each companies. Finally, we described the improvement cases of process for odor emission reduction.

The purpose of this study is to investigate concentration and emission factor of 22 odorous compounds, which are regulated by the domestic act, emitted from poultry buildings by on-site investigation. The odorous compounds which were detected in at least one poultry building were ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, trimethyl amine, styrene, toluene, xylene and methyl ethyl ketone whereas other 12 odorous compounds were not detected in poultry buildings. Generally there was no consistent concentration distribution of odorous compounds between poultry building applied with forced ventilation and poultry building applied with natural ventilation. It was found, however, that there was considerable concentration difference among odorous compounds. In monthly distribution of odorous compounds, their concentrations in September and October when ventilation rate in pig building decreased relatively were generally higher than those in July and August when ventilation rate in pig building is relatively high. On the contrary, emission factors of odorous compounds, in terms of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, in poultry building were relatively higher in July and August than September and October. The limit of this study is that unexpected conditions such as clearance of poultry building, poultry shipment and disorder of air pump were not controlled intentionally on the on-site investigation days.

In this study, emission characteristics of odorants from boiled egg samples were measured through time between fresh and decayed status. Air samples released from boiled egg were collected and analyzed five different periods during the whole experimental period set for 9 days. The concentrations of reduced sulfur compounds (RSC), carbonyl compounds (CC), and NH₃ were generally higher than others like volatile organic compounds over the entire period. Among target compounds, the concentration of H₂S recorded the maximum value of 3.65 ppm immediately after boiling which indicates its maximum contribution as odorant in fresh stage. In addition, some odorants (i.e. CH₃SH, AA, PA, BA, and VA) were detected in the range of 7.52 to 50.8 ppb. Emission of most odorants generally decreased after 1 day of boiling, although their concentrations increased again after 3 days to reach the peak values after 6 days. The dilution-to-threshold (D/T) ratio measured by air dilution sensory test samples between fresh and decayed egg showed patterns similar to H2S. In addition, the result of correlation analysis indicated that there is a strong relationship (p<0.01) between complex odor and H₂S.

Odorous pollutants emitted from the manufacturing process of TFT-LCD were investigated to prepare the odor control plan. Odor measurements in the workplace of clean room were also carried out. The odorous pollutants detected in the organic and acid gas emission duct were acetone, acetic acid, IPA, nbutylacetate, PGMEA, cyclohexane, which were chemicals used for LCD manufacturing. Especially, acetic acid was turned out to one of the major odor substances in the acid gas emission duct because of its low odor threshold value. No odorous pollutants were detected in the toxic gas emission duct. Some organic gases detected in the clean room were due to the leakage from chemical containers or LCD devices.

This research determined the threshold value of 12 specified offensive odor substances based on the 3 point comparison sensory method. The panelist’s thresholds were calculated by taking the arithmetic, geometric mean, and 50th percentile. Three methods of calculating the odor thresholds from the same data are compared. For 12 odor substances, the panelist’s thresholds were showed logarithmically normal distribution. The 50th percentile was the best method among the three methods of caculating the odor threshold from the 72 panel’s thresholdes. As a result, the threshold values of individual odor substances, including methyl mercaptane, hydrogen sulfide, trimethylamine, and i-valeraldehyde ranged between 0.0001~0.001 ppm, while the values of styrene and ammonia were relatively higher than of other substances at 0.089 ppm and 3.2 ppm, respectively. The threshold values of the 12 specified odor substances were compared in Korea and overseas, which showed that the characteristics of sensory response varied by substance and nation.

Odorous compounds were monitored and dispersion modeling was conducted using AERMOD model. for Songtan Industrial Complex (SIC) located in Mogok-dong, Pyeongtaek city. The complex odor at the target area showed an average dilution ratio of 4.5 and low ammonia concentrations were observed (78.3 ppb). Sulfide, methyl iso-buthyl ketone, methyl ethyl ketone and styrene were not detected. The toluene concentration showed as 1233.3 ppb, which was the highest in the target compounds. The diffusion effect of odorous pollutants by wind was confirmed by descending order of concentration, inner-SIC (282 ppb) > downwind site (182 ppb) > upwind site (11.6 ppb). The results of the modeling demonstrated that the complex odors on the west and, south, north and east of the boundaries were dilution ratios of 10 24 and 20, respectively indicating the north and the east of SIC were more vulnerable to odor pollution than other regions.

This study aims to produce the threshold values of 12 specified offensive odor substances based on the 3 point comparison method instead of the 2 point comparison method of ASTM or CEN. As a result, the threshold values of individual odor substances, including Methyl mercaptane, Hydrogen sulfide, Trimethylamine, and I-Valeraldehyde ranged between 0.0001∼0.001ppm, while the values of Styrene and Ammonia were relatively higher than of other substances at 1.8ppm and 0.04 ppm respectively. The threshold values of the 12 specified odor substances were compared in Korea and overseas, which showed that the characteristics of olfactory response varied by substance and nation. When it comes to acetaldehyde or hydrogen sulfide, western countries, including the United States, tended to quite insensible compared to Koreans. Japanese people were more sensitive in the 12 specified odor substances than Koreans in general, suggesting that it is not only because of its olfactory ability, but because of the calculation method that produces Japan‘s dilution threshold values approximately 1.5 times as high as Korea"s.

This study was conducted to determine distribution and characteristics of odors in Yeo-su industrial complex. The sampling of odor compounds was performed from may to september in 2009, twice a month, both morning and afternoon. The analytical items were meteorological data, complex odor, legally-designated 17 odor compounds. Complex odor and 17 odor compounds in Yeo-su industrial complex were suitable in emmission standard(s). The major odor compounds were appeared to be Hydrogen sulfide, Methyl mercaptan, Trimethyl amine, Ammonia. So, the industrial complex in Yeo-su was influenced by the Nitrogen and Sulfide odor substances. The distribution of concentration was investigated Ammonia> Stylene> Xylene> Acetaldehyde in order. We suggest that VOCs, causing the odor problem in Yeo-su, should be mutually controlled with Hazardous Air Monitoring Network.

In this study, calibration characteristics of odorous amine compounds were investigated by gas chromatography (GC)-nitrogen phosphorous detector (NPD). To this end, three different amine compounds (methyl amine (MTA), dimethyl amine (DMA), and trimethyl amine (TMA)) were analyzed in a series of calibration experiments. As the first step, the liquid phase standards of these amines were calibrated at 5 concentration levels with the fixed standard volume (FSV) method. The results showed that response factors of three amines were in the order of TMA > DMA > MTA with their correlation coefficients (r) above 0.97. The results of FSV calibration also indicated that the analytical sensitivity of amines increased with reducing injection volume due to the decrease in matrix effect. However, when these compounds were calibrated by the fixed standard concentration (FSC) method, the results were not stable under most circumstances. In addition, the reliability of internal calibration approach was also tested using pyridine, nitrobenzene, and nicotine. When pyridine was used as internal standard of these amines, analytical reproducibility of amines was improved greatly compared to external calibration results (e.g., an improvement of 75% for DMA).

This study was conducted to show the odor emission characteristics between the well maintained environment fundamental facility and the poorly maintained environmental facility. It also draws major components of odor emission based on facilities, stages, and suggest the proper way to reduce the level of odor for insufficient facilities. Insufficient facilities" air direct sensory and air dilution value levels are following: foodwaste > livestock > wastewater > night-soil > sewage. For the sewage and waste water facilities, the common characteristic of odor emission on each fundamental facility showed higher air dilution value in depositing reservoir and concentrator. And sulfur and aldehyde compounds came out to be the major odor causing components. In the case of night-soil and livestock facilities, the air dilution value was high in flow equalization tank and liquid erosion tank. And sulfur as well as ammonia component was the major malodorous substance. Foodwaste facility showed higher air dilution value than other facility, which sulfur and acetaldehyde compounds were acting as major malodorous substances.

In this study, we attempted to evaluate the relationship between dilution‐to‐threshold (D/T) ratio derived by air dilution sensory (ADS) test and the concentration levels of both individual odorant (using H₂S and acetaldehyde (AA)) and their mixture. For the purpose of our comparative study, we prepared both standard gases of two individual compounds and their mixture at 9 concentration levels. Each of all these samples were analyzed by ADS test, and the results were analyzed in relation to their odor intensity. The results of individual odorant samples showed the two contrasting characteristics of each individual compound. H2S generally showed sensitive detection at low concentration but less sensitive detection with increasing concentration. In contrast, AA showed fairly contrasting trend with slow increasing sensitivity. When the D/T ratios estimated from individual samples were used to predict those of mixed samples, the results were reflecting the mixed effects of the basic characteristics owned by each individual compound. As the lower and upper odor intensities of mixed samples were best reflected by AA and H2S, respectively, the D/T ratio of mixed samples complied with the larger D/T values of each compound at a given odor intensity.

In this study, the calibration characteristics of six new odorant VOCs along with two reference compound were evaluated based on GC-MS (SIM). For the proper evaluation of the GC/MS method, calibration of 7 VOCs were made both by the SPME and direct injection (DI). The minimum detection limit (MDL) of those VOC determined by SPME method fell in the range of 0.31∼0.38 ppb while those of DI from 6.18∼14.3 ppb. The analytical performance of our SPME/GC-MS method was compared against those tested previously by other study groups. Although more efforts are needed to establish the reliability of our SPME/GC-MS method, the method adapted in this study can be recommended as one of the standard methods for the analysis of the target VOCs in this study to settle formal experiment methods.

This study attempts to identify whether Phenethylamine (PTA), having a similar smell to fish malodor, is appropriate as a replacement of Trimethylamine (TMA). In a continuous measurement test, the odor intensity of both reagents TMA and PTA measured within 5 minutes showed between 0.4~0.7, indicating a dramatic reduction in olfactory sense, while the measurement test conducted after olfactory recovery did not represent much decrease. The result shows that both TMA and PTA have odors that stay long, but are judged to be inappropriate as a replacement as they stimulate the olfactory sense of the panel and give direct impact on the panel"s next judgement.
