        The effect of water extract in fruits of Omija (Schizandra chinensis Baillon) on alloxan-induced diabetic rats were determining the contents of metabolites and enzyme activities in the liver and serum of rat. The treatment with water extract in fruits of Omija showed increased in contents of protein, glycogen, and activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and a decreased in pyruvate content in the hepatic tissue from the alloxan treated group. These treatments were decreased contents of glucose, urea nitrogen, free fatty acid and activities of GPT, GOT, LDH.

        To assess the effects of water extracts in fruits of Omija (Schizandra chinensis Baillon) on alcohol metabolism, rats were orally administrated with alcohol (25% alcohol, 0.75g/200g B.W., 40% alcohol, 0.8g/200g B.W.). The level of metabolites and enzyme activities of the serum and liver were unchanged by the 25% ethanol or 40% ethanol treatment with acute orally administration. Blood alcohol level was markdely decreased by the treatment with water extracts in fruits of Omija. The serum level of Urea nitrogen, Free fatty acid, GPT and LDH were tended to decreased, level of GOT was unchanged. Contents of hepatic microsomal protein, glycogen, pyruvate in the liver were increased by water extracts in fruits of Omija. In conclusion, the present study clearly demonstrates that water extract in fruits of Omija promotes the overall metabolism and detoxication of alcohol.

        The effect of water extract in fruits of Omija (Schizandra chinensis Ballion) on liver function in expermental liver injuries induced by CCl4. The levels of GPT, GOT activities in serum were decreased apparently on the dosage of water extract in fruits of Omija correspond to raw Omija 1g compared to control group. The levels of Microsomal protein, glycogen, and pyruvate in liver and of Urea nitrogen, GPT, GOT, LDH in serum showed a trend toward restoration of normalization. No effective of levels of hepatic G6P DH activity and serum free fatty acid by water extract in fruits of Omija.

        In order to study the mechanism of the parts of omiza (Schizandra chinensis baillon) on metabolism in normal rats, the metabolites and enzyme activities both in serum and liver were determined. The rats were treated with water extract of the parts of omiza and the results showed a significant decrease of GOT, Glucose (excepted for water extract of fruits), Urea nitrogen, and increase of LDH in serum. Free fatty acid level tended to decrease in serum of rats treated with water extracts of fruits and endocarps and increase in seeds extract treated group. Serum GPT level was unchanged. The level of hapatic metabolites and enzyme activity showed a significant increase, but Pyruvate level was not significantly decreased.

        The compositions of total and free amino acids in parts of Omija were investigated. The most abundant amino acids in fruits, endocarps, and seeds were arginine (50.80%), lysine (14.37%), glutamic acid (14.22%), respectively. Since the amino acid scores of fruits, endocarps, and seeds were 9.4, 11.9, and 16.7, respectively, the limiting amino acid of each part were S-compound amino acids. In the composition of free amino acids, contents of lysine were highest one such as 51.78, 57.00 and 32.88% in fruits, endocarps and seeds, respectively. The contents of histidine from free amino acids were 23.62% in fruits, 22.37% in endocarps, and 26.41% in seeds.

        This study was carried out to investigate the compositions of free sugars, lipids, and nonvolatile organic acids in parts of omija. The major components of free sugars in each part of omija were fructose and glucose. The contents of those were similar in fruits and endocarps, however, the content of glucose was 1.5 times as much as that of fructose in seeds. The content of lipids in endocarps was 2.4 times as much as that in seeds, and major composition of lipids was neutral lipid. In the contents of nonvolatile organic acids, the content of citric acid that content was 61 to 68% depend on each part of sample was highest among other components, and that of malic acid being 25 to 30% was followed. The contents of nonvolatile organic acids of water extract were 74.5, 55.9, and 69.2% as high as those of original sample in fruits, endocarps, and seeds, respectively. The content of oxalic acid in seeds was lower than that of it in original sample.

        This study was carried out to comparison of the contents of general and mineral components between the original sample and water extract in each part of omija. The content of Carbohydrate was highest in endocarps, and that the crude protein and crude lipid in seeds. The contents of K and Mn in the fruits, endocarps, and seeds were all higher than those of the other cations. The content of K and Zn in endocarps were three to four times as much as those of seeds. and the content of Na, Ca, and Cu in endocarps were 1.5 to 1.75 times of seeds. Mineral contents by water extract in each part were ordered as K, Mg, Ca, and Fe. As the percentage of each ion in water extract on the basis of original sample, Fe was the highest ratio of behavior, and Mn was lowest.

        Background: Various Schisandra chinensis (SC) varieties grow in diverse regions in Korea. However, there is no valid scientific evidence of these varieties. This study aimed to select the excellent resources in terms of the growth characteristics, antioxidant activities, and analysis of the active compounds of the SC collection. Method and Results: In total, 154 resources of SC were collected from various regions of Korea. The growth characteristics were measured by the number of fruit bunches, fruit number, and weight of 100 fruits. The antioxidant activities were investigated by analyzing the total flavonoid and total polyphenol contents and the radical scavenging activity of DPPH and ABTS. Schizandrin A, schizandrin c, gomisin a, and gomisin N were analyzed by HPLC. Each resource showed different growth characteristics. Among the antioxidative effects, the highest 20 resources showed high antioxidant activities in selected 29 resources. Analysis of the SC lignan index showed that all resources contained more than 1.16% of active compounds. Conclusions: All of the selected 29 SC resources were shown to have excellent growth characteristics, antioxidant activities, and bioactive compound richness. Especially, SC-004, SC-007, and SC-154 showed the best growth characteristics, and SC-22, SC-40, and SC-45 showed the best antioxidant activities and bioactive compound richness.

        Backgoound : Various varieties of Schisandra chinensis (Omija) are grown in various regions of Korea. However, there is no study on varieties with excellent efficacy for each variety. Therefore, in this study, it is aimed to select the excellent lineage by analyzing the active compounds of Omija collection species Methods and Results : 154 lineage of Omija was collected from Muju of Jeollabuk-do, Jangsu of Jeollabuk-do and Hoengseong of Gangwon-do. They were cultivated in test-research farm in Rural Development Administration at Eumseong of Chungcheongbuk-do and used as materials. In order to analyze the active compounds (Shizandrin A, Shizandrin C, Gomisin A, Gomisin N) in Omija, the HPLC method described in the Korean Pharmacopoeia (compounds of Omija indicator) was used. As a result of analysis of functional compounds, SC-003, SC-005, SC-013, SC-015, SC-019, SC-020, SC-022, SC-023, SC-040, SC-042, SC-045, SC-066, SC-069 and SC-072 were collected from Jangsu, Jeollabuk-do, SC-082 was collected from Hoengseong, Gangwon-do and SC-139 was collected from Muju, Jeollabuk-do showed higher contents of functional compounds than other collected species. Conclusion : As demand for high income crop has increased, new cultivar breeding is required to produce high quality Schisandra chinensis (Omija). In this study, Shisandra A, Shizandrin C, Gomisin A and Gomisin N were analyzed as functional compounds of Omija. They can be used for new Omija breeding. Especially SC-003, SC-019, SC-022, SC-040, SC-045, SC-069 and SC-082 can be superior lineags with high functional compound contents.

        Background : Korea ginseng root has been traditionally used as a tonic as it is stated to have the capacity to normalize body functions and strengthen systems that are caused by various stresses. But, white ginseng (WG) has lower antioxidant activity than other medicinal crops. Omija (Schisandra chinensis Baillon) has various physiological functionalities such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, which have the effective components of Omija are lignans (schizandrins and gomisins), and this components were contented mostly in seed part on Omija. Physiological characteristics of WG extracts were investigated by adding Omija to enhance functionality. Methods and Results : WG extract were prepared by adding 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% of Omija to the weight of WG. Physiological characteristics of WG extracts were investigated DPPH radical scavenging activity, FRAP, and nitrite scavenging activity. As the amount of Omija added increased, DPPH radical scavenging activity of WG extract increased proportionally. IC50 of 10 times water extracts were 0.455, 0.028 and 0.041 ml/ml on WG (100WG), WG added 50% Omija (50OM50WG), and Omija (100OM0WG), respectively. On the other hand, FRAP of extracts decreased slightly with increasing amount of Omija. Nitrite scavenging activity of Omija extract were significantly more active than WG extract, exhibited to 88.89% and 72.65% on WG extract added with 40% Omija (40OM60WG) and non added (100WG), respectively, pH 1.2. and then, to 33.45% and 1.38% with 40OM60WG and 100WG extract, respectively. Conclusion : From the above results, we may suggest that WG extracts by adding Omija increased the DPPH radical scavenging activity, nitrite scavenging activity and the preference degree on taste.

        Background : Schisandrae Fructus (Omija) has been widely used for medicinal herbs because it is known for its various medical functions and antimicrobial activities. This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial activities of extracts from Schisandrae Fructus against six foodborne pathogens (Bacillus cereus, E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus) and figured out the efficient extraction methods. Methods and Results : Traditionally, Schisandrae Fructus is soaked or boiled in water when people drink it like tea. In this study, we extracted Schisandrae Fructus by soaking in water and ethyl alcohol for 24 hours, ultrasonicating in methyl alcohol and water for 60 minutes, and boiling in water for 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes. Each extract used for paper disc test that estimates antimicrobial activities by measuring the inhibition zone. The blank discs that absorbed with extracts were placed on the agar plates that smeared with each foodborne pathogen, then incubated overnight at 37℃ incubator. Then, antibacterial extracts formed clear zones around the disc. In this study, Vibrio parahaemolyticus was the most sensitive to the all kinds of extracts and methyl alcohol extracts that were obtained by ultrasonicating showed the most strong antimicrobial activities against six foodborne pathogens (23, 12, 29, 18, 23, 28 ㎜). Hot water extracts and soaking extracts in water showed the similar results, and the extracts that was boiled for 60 minutes was the best results (13, 8, 21, 10, 13, 17 ㎜) against all the pathogens. Conclusion : The extracts from Schisandrae Fructus inhibited the growth of six foodborne pathogens. Soaking and boiling in water are good methods for drinking Schisandrae Fructus like tea because they showed antimicrobial activities in the paper disc test. According to this study, the best boiling time for effective antimicrobial activity is 60 minutes.

        The Omija (Schizandra chinensis Baillon) is a fruit native to northeast Asia that is cultivated in South Korea and China. Using 1,938 valid patents of 6 group countries, we analyzed the patent trend based on year, countries, applicants, and technology. The technologies are categorized the 10 sub-technologies such as medicine, quasi-drugs, food, feed, cosmetics, cultivation, genome, manufacture, preprocessing, and etc. The technology level and competitiveness are analyzed using patent index such as cites per patent, patent impact index, patent family size and technology strength. In Korea, patent number rapidly increasing and individual technical level is lower than other countries. However, overall technical competitiveness is estimated high due to multiple patents. We suggest that cosmetics and cultivation fields are most likely to be developed in future omiza technology development in Korea. Our study will provides to the information of technical trend to support performing of new projects for Omija plant.

        This study was conducted to examine the antioxidant activities and physiological activities of mixture extracts (Liriope platyphylla, Schizandra chinensis and Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) with different extraction mixing ratios (MEC, 2:1:1; ME1, 1:2:1; ME2, 1:1:2; ME3, 1.34:1.33:1.33). The yield of extracts ranged from 25.33 to 33.87%. The total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents of ME1 extracts were 1.01 g/100 g, 0.07 g/100 g, respectively. The total sugar contents of MEC extract was 22.83 g/100 g, respectively. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of ME1 extracts at 1,000 μg/mL were 26.79% and 21.08%. The superoxide radical scavenging and ferric-reducing antioxidant power of ME1 extracts at 1,000 μg/mL were 67.83% and 295.47 μM, respectively. The functionalities of extracts were investigated with L-132 and RAW264.7 cell lines. The extracts on different mixing ratios did not show the toxicity on L-132 and RAW264.7 cell line in 100-2,500 μg/mL. The ME1 extract of 1,000 μg/mL performed better than other extracts protective effects against oxidative stess in L-132 cells (81.22%) and the ME2 extract at 1,000 μg/mL decreased nitric oxide production by 7.48 μM which was more potent than other extracts. There results suggest that the ME1 extracts may be a useful functional food material in the food industry.

        해마다 대기업을 중심으로 브랜드 가치를 높이기 위해 막대한 마케팅 비용을 투자하고 있지만 정작 브랜드 인지도가 낮은 중소기업이나 지자체 농수산 브랜드들은 체계적인 브랜드 관리가 어려운 실정이다. 특히 농산물 브랜드는 브랜드 가치가 거의 생성되어 있지 않은 상태에서 소비자와 최우선 접점에 있기에 그 중요성은 더욱 절실하다고 할 수 있다. 지금까지의 연구가 대기업의 브랜드 가치와 인지도를 분석하는 마케팅적인 부분에 편중된 반면 실질적으로 브랜드를 나타내고 표현하 는 브랜드 아이덴티티 구성요소에 대한 연구는 많이 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구는 브랜드 가치가 제대로 형성되어 있지 않는 국내 지자체 오미자 브랜드들을 케빈 레인 켈러(Kevin Lane Keller) 의 브랜드 아이덴티티 선택모델에서 브랜드 인지도와 연상을 강화시켜주는 구성 요소를 토대로 국내 대형 포털사이트에서 활발히 판매되고 있는 20개의 오미자 브랜드들을 구분하고 정리하였다. 이를 바탕으로 디자인전공 2~30대 대학생 및 대학 원생 100명을 선정하여 각 브랜드별로 선택기준에 맞는 브랜드를 선택하게 하였다. 그 결과 브랜드 아이덴티티 구성요소를 충족한 4개의 브랜드를 선별하였으며, 브랜드 아이덴티티 구성요소의 선택기준을 적용 하였다. 이 자료를 기초하여 새로운 오미자 브랜드 패키지 디자인을 개발하였다. 추후 브랜드 아이덴티티의 구성요소를 분석한 자료를 기반으로 지자체 농수산 브랜드의 보다 효과적이고 실질적인 지원과 활성화 방안의 자료로 쓰이기를 기대 한다.

        Background : Recent climate change has also affected the biological season for plants. There are various studies on this, but most of them are studying horticultural crops. The purpose of this study was to investigate the timing of flowering in different regions and to predict the flowering time of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baillon. using meteorological data. Methods and Results : The flowering time and cultivation area of Schisandra chinensis were searched and surveyed by the Internet data and Annual research report of the RDA. Accumulated temperature and Growing degree day at 0℃, 5℃, 10℃ or more and Cumulative hours of sunshine at 0℃ or more to the cultivation area and flowering period of irradiated Schisandra chinensis were calculated from meteorological data of KMA (Korea. Meteorological Administration) and calculated using Excel, respectively. statistical analysis was performed using Excel. The data collected were 15 research reports and 20 internet surveys, but it was difficult to use statistical significance due to the high coefficient of variation. The 5-year Suwon data and the 3-year data of Jinan were used in the study report data relatively close to the meteorological stations. Conclusion : Results of statistical analysis. The flowering time of Schisandra chinensis is the time when Accumulated temperature of 0℃ or more [Σ (daily average temperature > 0℃)] becomes 650℃ and the Growing degree day of 0℃ or more { Σ [ (day maximum temperature + day minimum temperature) / 2 > 0℃ ] } was 670℃. The coefficient of variation was 6.5% and 6.2%, respectively.

        Backgoound : This study was conducted to serve as a basis for the selection of superior lines by analyzing the content of antioxidant component and antioxidant activity in Schisandra chinensis Collections Methods and Results : In order to examine antioxidant component and antioxidant activity, 154 species of Schisandra chinensis from whole country were used. Antioxidant component was investigated by total flavonoid content and total phenolic content and antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical scavenging activity. As a result, the total amounts of flavonoids was highest in SC-20 with 5.03 ㎎/g. However the content of polyphenols showed highest in SC-22 with 2.76 ㎎/g. In addition antioxidant activity results were also relatively high in SC-22. The IC50 value was 548 ㎍/㎖ in DPPH radical scavenging and 640 ㎍/㎖. in ABTS+ radical scavenging. Conclusion : As demand for high income crop has increased, new cultivar breeding is required to produce high quality Schisandra chinensis From this study, analyses of antioxidant component and antioxidant activity in collection can be used for new Schisandra chinensis breeding. Especially SC-22 can be superior lines with high antioxidant component and antioxidant activity.

        Background:This study was aimed to determine the optimal vine induction method for growing of Korean schisandra (Schisandra chinensis), by comparing plant growth and fruit yields between plants grown with either fence-type (U-type) or A-type induction.Methods and Results:Plants were transplanted on August 17, 2014, and the plant height, stem node number and weight were measured every two weeks, six times from June 17, 2017. The plant height, stem node number, and leaf length and width were higher with the A-type than with the U-type induction, by approximately 37.0%, 49.1%, 27.6%, and 12.7%, respectively. Although there was no significant difference between the photosynthesis rates of plants grown with the two vine induction method, the leaf area and leaf number per plant were higher in the plants grown with the A-type than the U-type, by approximately 23.7% and 46.0%, respectively. The number of green-color pixels, in a defined area of digital camera images of creeper leaves from the inducted vines, was significantly higher in the plants grown with the A-type than the U-type. The number of fruit clusters per plant was approximately 26 and 36, under the U-type and A-type, respectively. A two fold higher total fruit weight per plant was observed in the plants grown under the A-type (250 g/plant) than the U-type (120 g/plant).Conclusions:The A-type vine induction method is optimal for cultivation of Korean schisandra.

        Puff processing is one of the preparation and processing methods of herbal medicines. This study analyzed the quality characteristics in schisandra chinensis extracts by puff processing (1 kgf/cm2, 3 kgf/cm2, 5 kgf/cm2) through changes of the lignan contents and antioxidant activity. The lignan contents and antioxidant activity of puff processing schisandra chinensis extracts (PPSCE) increased higher than compared to a control. Also, as lignan contents and antioxidant activity of PPSCE was increased with the increasing pressure but it was reduced from 5 kgf/ cm2. The results suggest that puff processing was attributed to the quality increase schisandra chinensis.
