        This study examined radiation damage and the optimal gamma-ray dose for mutation breeding in oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Samhan). The seed germination rate decreased as the dose increased over 500 Gy. The median lethal dose (LD50) was approximately 392 Gy. The median reduction dose (RD50) for plant height, tiller number, root length, and flash weight was 411, 403, 394, and 411 Gy, respectively. The optimal dose of gamma irradiation for inducing oat mutation appears to be in the range 300-400 Gy. We performed the comet assay to observe nuclear DNA damage induced by gamma-ray irradiation. This assay showed a clear difference with gamma-ray treatments. DNA damage increased temporarily 7 days after treatment depending on the dose, while no significant difference was identified in response to 300 Gy 30 days after the gamma-ray treatments. The growth characteristics of the M2 generation decreased as the dose increased over 400 Gy.

        ‘수양’은 우리나라에서 재배가 가능한 조숙 양질 다수성 쌀귀리 품종을 육성하고자 1996년에 조숙성인 ‘식용귀리’를 모본으로, 조숙 대립 겉귀리 계통인 ‘귀리23호’를 부본으로 인공교배를 하여 계통 및 집단육종법에 의해 선발된 ‘SO96025-B-303-44-2-4’ 계통이다. 이 계통은 2003년부터 생산력검정시험을 거쳐 계통명이 ‘귀리56호’로 명명되었고, 2005년부터 지역적응시험을 거쳐 2010년에 육성된 품종이다. ‘수양’의 잎은 담녹색이고 폭과 길이는 좁고 짧으며, 종실은 길고 황갈색이다. ‘수양’의 출수기는 재배지 평균 4월 28일로서, 기존에 육성된 ‘선양’에 비해 11일 빨랐으며, 성숙기 또한 6월 7일로서 ‘선양’에 비해 6일 빨랐다. ‘수양’의 내한성은 표준품종인 ‘선양’ 보다 강하였고, 도복도 ‘선양’과 같은 수준이었다. ‘수양’은 m2당수수가 568개로 51개 적었으나, 1수립수는 73개로서 7개 많았고, ℓ중은 646 g으로서 596 g인 ‘선양’에 비해 50 g, 천립중은 29.2 g으로 4.2 g 무거운 편이었다. 지역적응시험에서 ‘수양’의 평균 종실 수량은 4.35 톤/ha으로 표준품종인 ‘선양’보다 29% 많았다. ‘수양’은 ‘선양’에 비해 탈부율이 100%로 높고, 조단백질 함량이 11.3%, 베타글루칸 함량이 4.7%로 표준품종인 ‘선양’과 비슷하였다.

        ’Dahan’ (Avena sativa L.), a winter oat for forage use, was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2011. It was derived from an original cross between the F1 hybrid of ‘Sprinter’ and ‘73625’ and ‘Gwiri26’ (PA7507-37). Subsequent generations followed by the cross were handled in bulk and pedigree selection programs at Suwon. A line, ‘SO99027-GB-B-113-4-4-3’, was selected for cold tolerance and good agronomic characteristics and designated as a line name of ‘Gwiri75’. The line ‘Gwiri75’ was subsequently evaluated for cold tolerance, earliness, and forage yield in four different locations, Yesan, Iksan, Kimjae, and Jeju, from 2009 to 2011 and finally named as ‘Dahan’. Over 3 years, the average forage dry matter yield of ‘Dahan’ harvested at milk-ripe stage was 15.6 MT ha-1, compared with 14.1 MT ha-1 of check cultivar ‘Samhan’. Though similar in heading date to the check cultivar, ‘Dahan’ had tall plant length and lodging resistance. The feed value of ‘Dahan’ was superior to the check cultivar in percent total digestible nutrients (TDN) and TDN yield per ha. ‘Dahan’ is recommended primarily for winter planting use in the areas where daily minimum mean temperatures are averaged higher than -6 ℃ in January, and excluded in mountain area where frost damage is presumable.

        Oat flour was purchased and investigated for quality characteristics of oat bread. Antioxidant and flour pasting properties of oat flour, and water content, weight, volume, Hunter color value, texture of bread were measured. DPPH radical scavenging capacity (%) of oat extract was 68.49%. Pasting temperature of oat flour ranged between 66.60~circC and 70.93~circC . Flour pasting properties of sample added with 10 and 30% oat flour was shown similar results compared with wheat flour. Final viscosity of sample was increased by adding concentration of oat flour (up to 311.65 RVA). Water content (%) of bread was shown increasing trend by adding oat flour. Weight of bread loaf with 100% oat flour was shown higher score than other samples. Volume of loaf by adding oat flour of 10, 30, and 50 % ratio was 550, 450, and 388 mL, respectively. The Hunter color L* values of bread by adding oat flour was dark compared with wheat bread. Color value of bread added 10% oat flour was similar results with L* values of bread with wheat flour. The bread added with 20 and 30% oat flours had the higher hardness, gumminess, and chewiness compared with other samples. Cohesiveness of the bread with wheat flour showed higher than that of bread added with oat flour and increased by storage period. The growth of total viable cell was inhibited depending on the concentration of oat flour during storage.

        총체 담근먹이용 조사료로 이용되고 있는 맥종들의 출수 후 생육시기별 전체건물수량에 대한 식물체 각 부위별 기여도를 분석하여 생산성이 우수한 조사료용 맥류 품종개발에 필요한 기초자료를 제공코자 수행한 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 출수 후 생육시기별 건물생산에 대한 부위별 건물중의 기여도 변화 유형은 맥종에 따라 부위별 기여기간 정도의 차이는 있으나 보리는 귀리와 밀은 호밀 및 트리 티케일과 각각 동일한 유형으로 분류할 수 있었다. 2. 보리와 귀리는 출수 후 20일 이후부터 전체 건물수량에 대한 부위별 기여도가 줄기에서 이삭으로 변화되는 반면 밀, 호밀, 트리티케일은 출수 후 30일 이후부터 이삭의 기여도가 줄기의 기여도 보다 큰 것으로 나타났다. 3. 전 맥종에서 줄기 건물중과 이삭 건물중이 출수 후 전 기간에 걸쳐 전체 건물수량에 있어서 주도적인 기여를 한 반면 잎 건물중의 기여도는 출수 후 10일 이후에는 미미한 수준에 머물러 있었고 줄기 건물중에 대한 기여도는 초장보다 수수의 영향이 큰 것으로 나타났다. 4. 생산성이 우수한 담근먹이용 품종을 개발하기 위해서는 각 맥종 공히 새육후기에 전체건물수량에 대한 이삭 건물중의 기여도가 높은 특성을 고려하면 이삭의 등숙이 빠르고 이삭무게가 무거운 수중형 품종이 수량성 및 이용성제고에 유리할 것으로 판단된다

        To develop the STS (Sequence Tagged Site) marker for discrimination between oat cultivars used the EEG (Euchromatin Enriched Genomic) DNA library in oat. The EEG DNA library was constructed the Mcr A and Mcr BC system in DH5 alpha bacterial cell line. About 3,500 EEG colonies had been constructed by using junk DNA exclusion. About 800 colonies were selected that included insert DNA more than 500 bp. It was analyzed the genetic information by using blast searches of NCBI web site. More than three hundred STS primer sets were developed using sequencing data of selected colonies and about 90 primer sets which showed single band were selected in Olgwiri. It was applied to twelve oat cultivars including Olgwiri and has been shown polymorphism at 15%. PCR product which amplified with selected STS primer was treated with six endonucleases and was showed polymorphic bands. These primers could be useful for specific allele tagging in mapping populations and germplasm and for the study of functional genomics of oat.

        These experiments were conducted to get high production and quality of whole crop winter cereals, Oat, Wheat and Triticale, in the paddy field. These three whole crop winter cereals are got later harvest than whole crop barley, so there are more production of forage. Its harvest time was the end of May or the early of June in the south area of Korea. Mixed cultivations of Oat and Wheat (MCOW) was got more production over 15 percents in the dry wight, and then contents of crude protein (CP) in MCOW were higher than single cultivation of Oat. And Relative feed values (RFV) of MCOW were higher than single cultivation of Oat. Mixed cultivations of Oat and Triticale (MCOT) were got more production over 7 percents in the dry wight than single cultivations of Oat, but contents of CP in MCOT were not changed in all plots. And RFVs of MCOT were higher than single cultivations of Oat.

         A new naked oat cultivar ‘hoyang’(Avena sativa L.) was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2007. It was derived from a cross between ‘ikyonggwiri’and ‘wiri23’ The cultivar, Sikyonggwiri is early heading while the breeding line Gwiri23 has a high yielding potential with large-size grain. Bulk method combined with pedigree selection program was employed in subsequent generations, and the promising line SO96025-B-303- 44-2-5 was selected for agronomic performance in 2002. The line showed both high yield and good husking rate of seed in the Yield Trial tested at Suwon in 2003 to 2004, and was subsequently designated as ‘wiri57’ Gwiri57 was evaluated for winter hardiness, earliness, and yield in four locations, Gimje, Iksan, Jeongeup and Jinju from 2005 to 2007 and was released as Choyang. Choyang headed 11 days earlier and matured 5 days earlier than the check cultivar ‘unyang’in the paddy field condition. The new cultivar Choyang had 97 cm of culm length and 23.4 cm of spike length, 658 spikes per m2, 75 grains per spike, 28.8 g of 1,000-grain weight, and 636 g of test weight. Choyang showed better winter hardiness than that of the check cultivar Sunyang, and similar seed quality to the check cultivar in respect to crude protein (12.9%) and β-glucan content (4.7%). However, it showed higher husking rate than the check cultivar. The grain yield of Choyang in the regional yield trial for 3 consecutive years was averaged 4.67 MT ha-1, which was 38% higher than that of the check cultivar Sunyang. Choyang is recommended for the fall sowing cropping only in the southern area where daily minimum mean temperatures are averaged higher than -4℃ in January, and is not recommended the in mountain area where frost damage is presumable.
