Using porous asphalt in order to reduce traffic noise and increase road safety specially in rainy weather is become a time demand now a days. Traditional dense asphalt can not provide a well mannered drain systems, adequate road capacity and noise friendly environment, which can make harm to roadway, property and ultimately to the life. In contrast, porous asphalt provides a environment friendly, cost effective, high skid resistive and well drains pavement with great durability. Additionally, the ability of porous to decrease the number of crashes both in sunny and wet-weather are up to the mark. In this context, investigate the ability of porous asphalt allows for deeper insights into all the mentioned factors, which help to make a durable, time demandable, more safer pavements in the field of pavement engineering. By combining some lab tests, field tests and analyzing the data, this research offers more accurate and reliable results to lead a pavement situation adaptable.

PURPOSES : This study aimed to evaluate the performance of carbon-reduced asphalt mixtures based on asphalt binder and asphalt mixture tests. METHODS : A carbon-reducing asphalt additive was developed, and samples were prepared by mixing the additive(0.85%, 1.35%, and 1.85%) with virgin asphalt binder to measure changes in the asphalt’s physical properties based on the content of the developed additive. The basic physical properties the penetration, softening point, ductility, and rotational viscosity and performance grade of the samples were measured, and the optimal content of the additive was determined to be 1.35%. An asphalt mixture was produced using the optimal additive content of 1.35%, and stability, indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio(TSR), and dynamic stability tests were conducted to compare its performance with that of hot mixed asphalt(HMA). Additionally, a dynamic modulus test that could simulate various loading conditions was conducted. Fuel consumption and CO2 emission were measured at the plant. RESULTS : The developed additive had the effect of reducing the viscosity of the binder while maintaining properties similar to those of the base binder when used at the selected content. The mixture test confirmed that the physical properties related to strength tended to decrease slightly when the additive were applied; however, all specifications were satisfied. In the dynamic modulus test, the results were confirmed to be similar to those of HMA. The fuel consumption and CO2 emission were reduced by 25-30%. CONCLUSIONS : Evidently, asphalt mixtures with carbon-reducing additives can perform at a level equivalent to that of HMA. To bolster this conclusion, it is necessary to track the long-term performance of low-carbon asphalt mixtures on pilot roads.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of MAST composite pavement. METHODS : A Testbed with three different sections with varying pavement materials were constructed: Section 1 (MAST(Multi-Layered Asphalt Surface Treatment) Composite Pavement; RCC(Roller Compacted Concrete)+Modified DBST(Double Bituminous Surface Treatment), Section 2 (Aggregate base+Modified DBST), and Section 3 (aggregate base+General DBST). The structural stability and skid resistance were evaluated using LFWD test and sand patch test, respectively. Moreover, laboratory specimens of four different pavement materials (HMA(Hot Mix Asphalt), Gravel base+DBST, RCC+DBST, and RCC+Modified DBST) were fabricated using and the rutting resistance of each pavement type was evaluated using the MMLS3. RESULTS : As a result of the LFWD(Light Falling Weight Deflectometer) test, the elastic modulus of Section 1 was significantly higher compared to the other section with values between 450 MPa to 650 MPa. Meanwhile, the elastic modulus of Section 2 and Section 3 were almost similar from 50 MPa to 150 MPa. Moreover, sand patch test results showed that Section 1 and Section 2 have an excellent surface roughness with values higher than 0.7 mm but Section 3 has a poor surface roughness with MTD(Mean Texture Depth) value of 0.4 mm. Lastly, based on the results of the MMLS3(third scale Model Mobile Load Simulator) test, gravel base+DBST showed the lowest resistance to rutting among the four specimens, and both RCC+modified DBST and RCC+DBST showed good performance up to 600 loading cycles, but the rut depth increased rapidly until 1,000 loading cycles. CONCLUSIONS : MAST composite pavement(RCC+modified DBST) has superior structural stability compared to general DBST pavement (aggregate base+DBST), has excellent skid resistance with values higher than 0.7 mm, and has similar rutting resistance to that of general dense asphalt concrete pavement. Therefore, exhibiting its good performance in both structural and functional aspects, it can be concluded that MAST composite pavement(RCC+modified DBST) can be an effective alternative for pavement material in Southeast Asian developing countries where support for heavy vehicle loads is required and rutting is likely to occur.

PURPOSES : The increase in particulate matter due to increased air pollutant emissions has become a significant social issue. According to the Ministry of Environment, air pollutants emitted from large-scale businesses in 2022 increased by 12.2% compared to the previous year, indicating that air pollution is accelerating owing to excessive industrialization. In this study, TiO2, which is used to reduce airborne particulate, was used. The TiO2 coating fixation and dynamic pressure coating-type TiO2 fixation methods were used to solve the material peeling phenomenon caused by gravity, which is a limitation when the TiO2 penetration method is applied to a vertical concrete structure along the road. The long-term durability and performance were analyzed through environmental resistance and NOx removal efficiency evaluation experiments. These analyses were then assessed by comparing the NOx removal efficiency with the dynamic pressure permeationtype TiO2 fixation method used in previous studies. METHODS : To evaluate the long-term durability and performance of the TiO2 coating fixation method and dynamic pressure coating TiO2 fixation method for vertical concrete structures, specimens were manufactured based on roadside vertical concrete structures. Environmental resistance tests such as the surface peeling resistance test (ASTM C 672) and freeze-thaw resistance test (KS F 2456) were conducted to evaluate the long-term durability. To evaluate the long-term performance, the NOx removal efficiency of TiO2 concrete owing to road surface deterioration during the environmental resistance test was evaluated using the NOx removal efficiency evaluation equipment based on the ISO 22197-1 standard. This evaluation was compared and analyzed using the dynamic pressure infiltration TiO2 fixation method. RESULTS : The long-term durability of the TiO2 coating fixation and dynamic pressure coating TiO2 fixation methods were evaluated using environmental resistance tests. During the surface peeling resistance test, the TiO2 material degraded and partially detached from the concrete. However, the NOx removal efficiency was ensured by the non-deteriorated and fixed TiO2 material. The long-term performance was confirmed through a freeze-thaw resistance test to evaluate the NOx removal efficiency after 300 cycles of surface deterioration. The results showed that when the TiO2 coating fixation and dynamic pressure infiltration TiO2 fixation methods were applied to vertical concrete structures, the durability of the structure was not compromised. In comparison to the dynamic pressure infiltration TiO2 fixation method, the NOx removal efficiency observed during the surface peeling resistance test was lower, while the freeze-thaw test exhibited notably higher removal efficiency. CONCLUSIONS : To solve the material peeling phenomenon caused by gravity, the long-term durability and performance were evaluated by applying the TiO2 coating fixation and dynamic pressurized coating TiO2 fixation methods to vertical concrete specimens. Long-term durability was confirmed through environmental resistance tests, and long-term utility was secured by measuring the NOx removal efficiency according to surface degradation. These findings show that implementing the TiO2 coating fixation method and dynamic pressure coating TiO2 fixation methods on-site effectively reduce NOx.

PURPOSES : This study evaluates the long-term performance of the asphalt overlay designed by the Seoul pavement design method which determines overlay thickness by considering existing pavement conditions, traffic volume, and bearing capacity of the pavement. METHODS : A total of 76 sections including 17 control sections and 59 design sections were constructed under various traffic conditions, overlay thicknesses and asphalt mixtures. The performance of the pavements has been monitored up to 60 months in terms of surface distresses, rutting, and longitudinal roughness. The service life of the pavements was estimated to be the period when the Seoul pavement condition index (SPI) becomes 6.0, i.e., a rehabilitation level. RESULTS : Overall, the service life of the pavements was 72 months in the control and 120 months for the design sections. For relatively thinner overlay sections than designed, the service life reduced significantly; 36 months for 15cm thick overlay and 120 months for 25cm thick overlay. The service life of the pavement in the bus-only lane was 78 months, which is 30 months shorter than that in mixed-traffic lanes. Out of the bus-only lanes, 56% of the pavement along bus stop was deteriorated early to be a poor condition while only 2% of the pavement in a driving lane was degraded to be poor. The overlay with Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) in the wearing surface had 38% longer life than that with conventional dense graded mixtures. CONCLUSIONS : Most of the overlays sections designed by the Seoul pavement design method were expected to survive 10 years, except for bus-only lanes. The control sections having 5 to 10 cm thick overlays showed significant lower performance than the design sections. Thus proper thickness and materials considering the characteristics of existing pavement and traffic volumes should be applied to secure the service life of overlays.

PURPOSES : In this study, the results of an intensive field survey of a composite pavement applied to an expressway in Korea are analyzed. The results are intended to be used as basic data for evaluating the composite pavement and for preparing quality control measures through a review and analysis of the change in the state of the tensile bonding strength of the composite pavement. METHODS : To evaluate, repeated field coring and indoor tensile bonding strength evaluations are conducted for five years, and the commonality evaluation of pavement using pavement condition investigation equipment is conducted annually. RESULTS : The results of this study show that the degree of reflective crack generation varies depending on the type of concrete pavement and type of asphalt mixture applied to the intermediate layer, and that the CRCP composite pavement exhibits better initial commonality than the JCP composite pavement. In addition, it is confirmed that the composite cross-section pavement section with MASTIC applied as an intermediate layer shows excellent adhesion performance between the lower concrete layers from the beginning of construction in all sections, as well as satisfied the quality control standards for good pavement and tensile adhesion even after approximately five years of public use. CONCLUSIONS : Based on a follow-up survey of the composite pavement testing sections, it is confirmed that the section constructed with the MASTIC intermediate layer and CRCP satisfies the quality control standards for good pavement conditions and tensile adhesion even after approximately five years of public use.

PURPOSES : Graphene nanoplates, which have recently been in the spotlight in various fields, are a layer of graphite used in pencil leads, with carbon arranged in hexagonal honeycomb shapes. The graphene is 0.2 nanometers thick, and it possesses high physical and chemical stability, high strength, and conductivity. These graphene nanoplates have been studied for application in various devices such as semiconductors and batteries, and in the construction sector, where they are used as additives to improve the durability of cement concrete. The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical, and functional properties of graphene-modified asphalt mixtures. METHODS : In this study, the graphene input content of asphalt mixture samples was determined using an asphalt performance grade (PG) test. Based on the results of the test, their strength, stiffness, thermal properties, and electrical conductivity were evaluated. Indirect tensile strength test and dynamic modulus (DM) test were conducted to evaluate the strength and stiffness, and thermal conductivity tests and electrical conductivity evaluations were conducted for determining the functionality of the graphene-modified asphalt mixtures. The thermal conduction test was used to measure the external temperature change over time by placing a general heated asphalt mixture and graphene-modified asphalt with the same raw material-specific mixing ratio inside the temperature chamber in order to measure the heat conductivity. The electrical conductivity was evaluated using a digital multimeter to measure the resistance of DC voltage and DC current via a 4-probe method. RESULTS : The performance grade (PG) test results showed that, for a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), both tests met the baseline and that physical changes in the binder did not appear evident with graphene addition. Furthermore, each content met the baseline for the bending beam rheometer (BBR). The increasing ratio of flexural creep stiffness approached the maximum when 7.5% graphene was used. In indirect tensile strength test, an average of thrice the indirect tensile strength for graphene-modified asphalt was 0.92 N/mm2, which was approximately 0.04 N/mm2 higher than the average measured three times that of hot mix asphalt mixture, with the same raw material mixing ratio. In the thermal conduction tests, the temperature and the rate of change of temperature of the graphene-modified asphalt mixture were higher than those of the hot-mix asphalt mixture. Lastly, the results of the electric conductivity test using the 4-probe method showed that the electrical conductivity increased slightly as the graphene content increased, but overall, it showed very low electrical conductivity. CONCLUSIONS : In this study, the potential for enhancing the physical and functional performance of graphene nanoplates applied to asphalt mixtures was demonstrated. However, it is practically difficult to arrange graphene particles continuously within an asphalt mixture, which is believed to have very low electrical conductivity.

PURPOSES : This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of pressure relief joints (PRJs) installed on highways for preventing blow-ups. METHODS : To evaluate the performance of a PRJ, pavement surface images were acquired by conducting a follow-up survey through on-site visual inspection and an automated pavement condition survey. The PRJ widths in the acquired pavement images were measured using image analysis software, and major distress in the PRJ was identified. The relationship between the performance period and the joint width was bi-linearized, and the causes of distress and repair methods for PRJ were suggested. RESULTS : As a result of the first survey, it became known that the width of a PRJ rapidly decreases after installation owing to an expansion of the concrete slab. The width of a PRJ continued to decrease, with 94% of the joint below 30 mm and 64% of the joint being below 10 mm, based on the fourth survey. The PRJ width of an Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR) section decreased more than that of a normal section, but the difference in the average width between both sections decreased from 9.7 mm to 2.7 mm over the measured period. A bilinear estimation equation was developed based on the survey data. Through the estimation equation, it could be confirmed that joint contraction accelerated after installation owing to the effects of AAR, and that the joint widths of both sections converged to a similar level over the measurement period. As the result of the major distress analysis indicates, joint seal failure occurred in 70% of the joints, and the distress rates in terms of cracks, edge breakouts and spalling, and patching were 73%, 57%, and 28%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : With the follow-up survey it could be confirmed that the concrete slab continued to expand despite seasonal changes, maintenance of the PRJ, and additional installation of new PRJs. The expansion of the concrete slab due to AAR is considered to be closely related to PRJ behavior. In addition, it is judged that major distress of the PRJ occurs at an early age owing to the instantaneous release of excessive compressive stress inherent in the slab during joint cutting.

PURPOSES : In this study, we evaluated the quality levels of abrasion resistance and freeze-thaw resistance to the surface layer (colored layer) by using an overseas abrasion resistance test method to confirm the quality suitability of the concrete block surface for a domestic production permeable block. METHODS : In this study, a new evaluation item for increased durability apart from the quality standard of the permeable block was considered, namely, evaluation of the durability of the surface layer and the freeze-thaw resistance of the permeable block itself by EN 1338, ASTM C 779, 994, and GR 4009 (KS F 4419). RESULTS : The abrasion resistance test for the permeable block revealed that there were relative differences according to the different test methods. However, it was observed that if the ASTM C 779 test results did not meet the wear resistance quality standards, it did not satisfy ASTM C 944 and EN 1338. The ASTM C 779 test result was analyzed to have the highest objectivity and discernment, and this test method was proposed as a permeable block wear test method. In addition, the freeze-thaw resistance test method by the GR 4007 standard can be measured by strength, so it is possible to evaluate the resistance of the permeable block through this test method. CONCLUSIONS : The abrasion resistance test and freeze-thaw resistance test can contribute to the improvement of the permeable block when added to the current quality evaluation tests.

PURPOSES : This study was conducted to analyze the problems of the permeable block by objectively evaluating the quality of the permeable block and providing basic data to improve the quality and construction defect of the permeable block pavement in accordance with the continuously increasing demand of the permeable block. METHODS : In this study, we evaluated the current quality standard suitability of nine products to evaluate the current quality level of domestic production permeable blocks. The evaluation items were evaluated for surface layer thickness, block dimension, strength, and permeability coefficient, and the Korea Standard suitability for these evaluation items was analyzed. In addition, a three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to determine the effect of vehicle load on the deformation of block pavement structure. RESULTS : The results demonstrated that the surface layer (colored layer) thicknesses of domestically produced permeable block products were different according to the quality standards, and the dimensions were evaluated to be excellent for domestic permeable blocks currently being produced and delivered. In addition, the strength and permeability coefficient evaluation result demonstrated that all products meet the strength and permeability coefficient quality standards, but the correlation between these strengths and permeability coefficients is not high. The quality standard of strength and permeability coefficients is evaluated as being sufficiently achieved by domestic production technology. CONCLUSIONS: The intensity and permeability coefficients measured in this study were in line with the quality standards; however, the variable coefficient was found to have a significant difference in the quality control level from a maximum of 26% to a minimum 1.7%.

PURPOSES: This study was conducted to investigate the causes of damage and to suggest proper repair methods for the sections in which a number of transverse cracks and faulting occurred in JCP (Jointed Concrete Pavement) slabs during the early-age performance period. METHODS: Field crack survey, FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) investigation, dowel bar installation condition survey, longitudinal profile survey, and in-situ core specimen inspection were conducted. . RESULTS : As a result of the analysis, it was found that there was no decline in the composite modulus of the subgrade reaction (k-value). The dowel bars were properly installed, but the LTE (Load Transfer Efficiency) of the joint and transverse cracks were analyzed to be very low. In addition, it was found that there are voids in the bottom of the slab at the joints and corners. Due to the excessive built-in curling in the early age of concrete pavement construction, upward curling displacement occurred at the joints and corners, resulting in voids at the bottom of the slab. As a result, it was found that transverse cracks occurred due to the defective joint LTE. CONCLUSIONS: Excessive built-in curling can cause early age cracks in the JCP slabs. In order to minimize the occurrence of reflection cracks after the application of the asphalt overlay in the future, concepts of alternative repair methods were proposed.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of road stone block pavements using APT (Accelerated Pavement Testing), which can evaluate the short-term pavement performance of a pavement structure for a given traffic load. METHODS : The performance of stone block, concrete block, and asphalt (modified SMA) pavements were evaluated according to the cumulative equivalent load by using APT. The FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) test was used to analyze the deflection per unit load. In addition, the plastic settlement was analyzed by transverse profile measurement. RESULTS: The results of the APT of about 197,000 ESALs (Equivalent Single Axle Loads) show that there were no damages in the stone block, concrete block, and asphalt pavement, such as breakage of stone or concrete block, cracking of asphalt, deflection, and plastic settlement of the wheel-pass section. It was analyzed that the bearing capacity of each pavement section did not decrease sharply with increase in cumulative ESAL. The results of plastic settlement analysis show that in the case of asphalt pavement, the plastic settlement steadily progressed from the beginning of the APT, and a settlement of about 4.76 mm occurred. In the case of concrete block and stone block pavements, no significant change occurred after the initial stabilization step, and plastic settlement of about 1.01 mm and 0.17 mm occurred for the concrete block and stone block pavements, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : As a result of the analysis of the bearing capacity and plastic settlement after the APT, the performance of stone pavement was found to be similar to that of asphalt pavement and concrete block pavement. Therefore, it is concluded that stone pavements are applicable for the road pavement system.
