This paper aims to quantify the retrofit effect of the Bolt Prefabricated Concrete-Filled Tube reinforcement method on non-seismic school reinforced concrete building through static cyclic loading experiments. To achieve the objective, two-story specimens including a non-retrofitted frame(NRF) and a Bolt Prefabricated Concrete-Filled Tube Reinforcement Frame(BCRF) were tested under static cyclic loading, and the lateral resistant capacities were compared in terms of maximum strength, initial stiffness, effective stiffness, and total energy dissipation. In addition, the load-displacement curves were compared to the story drift limit specified in Seismic Performance Evaluation and Retrofit Manual for School Facilities to investigate if the retrofitted frame was satisfied in target performance(life safety). Experimental results showed that BCRF successfully met the target performance, with a 200% increase in maximum strength and a 300% increase in energy dissipation capacity. Additionally, both initial stiffness and effective stiffness improved by more than 30% compared to NRF. Furthermore, BCRF exhibited an effect that delayed the occurrence of bond failure.
The seismic performance of lead-rubber bearings (LRBs) is significantly affected by both the axial force and loading rate they experience. Accurate assessment of LRBs’ seismic performance, therefore, requires realistic simulation of these forces and rates, as well as of the response of the isolated structure during seismic events. This study conducted a series of real-time hybrid simulations (RTHS) to evaluate the seismic behavior of LRBs in such conditions. The simulations focused on a two-span continuous bridge isolated by LRBs atop the central pier, exposed to horizontal and vertical ground motions. In the RTHS framework, the LRBs were physically tested in the laboratory, while the remainder of the bridge was numerically modeled. Findings from these simulations indicated that the vertical ground motion had a minimal effect on the lateral response of the bridge when isolated by LRBs.
The purpose of this study is to experimentally analyze the seismic performance of a vertical irregular beam-column specimen reinforced with RBS (Replaceable Steel Brace System), a steel brace system. To evaluate the seismic performance of RBS, three specimens were manufactured and subjected to cycle loading tests. The stiffness ratio of beam-upper column of the non-retrofitted specimen was 1.2, and those of the two retrofitted specimens were 1.2 and 0.84. The stiffness ratio of the beam-lower column of all specimens was 0.36. And the stiffness ratio were used for variable. As a result of the experiment, the specimen retrofitted with RBS showed improved maximum load, effective stiffness and energy dissipation capacity compared to the non-retrofitted specimen with the same beam-upper column stiffness ratio. The specimen with 0.84 beam-upper column stiffness ratio showed improved performance compared to the specimen with 1.2 stiffness ratio.
Earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater occur in Korea about 10 times on average yearly, and the number of earthquakes occurring in Korea is increasing. As many earthquakes have recently occurred, interest in the safety of nuclear power plants has increased. Nuclear power plants are equipped with many cabinet-type control facilities to regulate safety facilities, and function maintenance is required during an earthquake. The seismic performance of the cabinet is divided into structural and functional performances. Structural performance can be secured during the design procedure. Functional performance depends on the vibration performance of the component. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the seismic performance of the components. Generally, seismic performance is confirmed through seismic simulation tests. When checking seismic performance through seismic simulation tests, it is difficult to determine the effect of frequency and maximum acceleration on an element. In this paper, shaking table tests were performed using various frequencies and various maximum accelerations. The seismic performance characteristics of the functions of electrical equipment components were confirmed through tests.
The purpose of this study is to experimentally analyze the seismic performance of beam-column specimens with vertical irregular, which were reinforced with RHS (Replaceable steel haunch system). a steel haunch system. To evaluate the seismic performance of the RHS, three specimens were manufactured and subjected to cycle loading tests. Retrofitted specimens have different beam-upper column stiffness ratio as a variable. The stiffness ratio of beam-upper column were considered to be 1.2 and 0.84. As a result of the test, the specimen reinforced with RHS showed improved maximum load and effective stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity compared to the non-retrofitted specimen with same beam-upper column stiffness ratio. The specimen with 0.84 beam-upper column stiffness ratio showed improved performance than the specimen with 12.
Restraints of Branch Lines are used as earthquake-resistant support devices for fire-fighting pipes along with sway brace devices. The central types are aligned and fixed in a straight line with center of the pipe, but the eccentric types are fixed to on side of the pipe, so a bending moment occurs. In this study, three specimens each of central type and eccentric type were installed at an angle of 45° from the vertical and a monotonic compression load of 1340N was applied. All central type samples satisfied 17.8mm of the allowable displacement, but all eccentric type samples failed to meet the target load and buckled. Therefore, when considering the performance of eccentric type restraints, both compressive load and bending moment must be considered. Even through material mechanics calculations, the yield stress of eccentric type - 3/8 inch all threaded steel bolt - exceeds 320Mpa of the allowable stress. A experiment standards need to be established for eccentric type restraints.
The purpose of this study is to experimentally analyze the seismic performance of column with RSB (Replaceable Steel Brace), a steel brace system with slot length as a variable. To evaluate the seismic performance of the RSB, three specimens were manufactured and subjected to cyclic loading tests. The length of the sliding slots were considered to be 5 mm and 10mm to enable the brace to resist the load from the initiation of flexural crack and shear crack. As a result of the test, the specimen reinforced with the RSB showed improved maximun load and effective stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity compared to the non-reinforced specimens. The specimens with 5mm sliding slot showed little difference in test result compared to the specimen with a 10mm sliding slot, indicating that the length of sliding slot has little influence on the effectiveness of RSB.
In piping systems, trapeze hangers are subjected to vertical and horizontal seismic loads and stiffeners are used. In this study, monotonic compression tests were conducted with the removable stiffeners using three variables: stiffener clamp fixing position, section length, and installation direction. The maximum load reinforced with stiffeners could withstand a compressive load of 11kN by applying a safety factor of 10%. It could be estimated that the fixing clamp spacing or the length of shape and load had a proportional relationship. And the stiffener must be fixed in the direction of the strong axis on hinge parts. Also the stiffener buckiling load design proposes to use a method of calculate the flexural buckling compressive strength of and unreinforced full threaded bolt.
In this paper, seismic performance evaluation was carried out for eight circular reinforced concrete columns designed seismically by KRTA[1]and KCI[8]. Primary design parameters for such columns included many longitudinal reinforcements, yield strength of reinforcements, the vertical spacing of spirals, aspect ratio, and axial force ratio. The test results showed that all the columns exhibited stable hysteretic and inelastic responses. Based on the test results, drift ratios corresponding to each damage state, such as initial yielding, initial cover spalling, initial core concrete crushing, buckling, and fracture of longitudinal reinforcement and final spalled region, were evaluated. Then, those ratios were compared with widely accepted damage limit states. The comparison revealed that the existing damage states were considerably conservative. This implies that additional research is required for the damage limit states of such columns designed seismically by current Korean design codes.
Unlike the CFT retrofit method, The EPFT retrofit method, which fills the steel tube with engineering plastic, does not require a separate concrete forming work and is a lightweight seismic Retrofit Method. In this study, an prototype model of the EPFT was proposed, and to analyze the seismic performance, an independent specimens and a reinforced concrete column were fabricated to conduct a seismic performance test. As a result of loading test of the independent specimens, the strength was increased compared to the steel tube column without internal filling, and the ductility ratio did not significantly increase due to the falling off of the weld. As a result of loading test of the concrete reinforcement specimen, the strength, ductility ratio, and energy dissipation were increased, and the number of cracks by loading step decreased compared to the non-reinforced specimen.
This study is conducted to verify the seismic reinforcement effects of internally inserted buckling-restrained braces supported laterally by buckling-restrained rings for the seismic reinforcement of existing reinforced concrete buildings with non-seismic details. First, to evaluate the performance of KDS, the hysteretic characteristics of buckling-restrained braces are verified, and it is discovered that they satisfy the conformance criteria of the displacement-dependent damping device. Three full-scale, two-story reinforced concrete framework specimens are prepared to verify the seismic reinforcement effects, and the proposed buckling-restrained braces are bolstered with single diagonal and V-shaped braces to be compared with non-reinforced specimens. By performing a comparison with non-reinforced specimens that present intensive shear cracks at the bottom of first-floor columns, it is revealed that the maximum load and energy dissipation of specimens reinforced with the proposed buckling restrained braces, in which the structural damage extends evenly throughout the system, are approximately 4 and 6.2 times higher, respectively, which proves the effectiveness of the proposed seismic reinforcement method.
In this study, to verify the structural performance of the Composite Joint System (CJS) hybrid structural model, a cyclic load test was performed and evaluated and verified through the test. To verify the structural performance of the CJS hybrid structural systems’ joint and evaluate the seismic performance, four three-dimensional real-size specimens were developed with three internal beam-column specimens and one external beam-column specimen. The three interior column specimens were classified by different methods of joining the upper column and lower column, and the same bonding method as the primary specimen was used for the exterior column. The structural performances in terms of drift, strength, and energy dissipation capacity were analyzed and compared based on the experimental results. From the displacement-based loading experiment, all specimens showed a lateral drift of 4.0% without any significant strength drop and stable energy dissipation capacity.
In this study, a field bridge test was conducted to find the dynamic properties of cable supported bridges with resilient-friction base isolation systems (R-FBI). Various ambient vibration tests were performed to estimate dynamic properties of a test bridge using trucks in a non-transportation state before opening of the bridge and by ordinary traffic loadings about one year later after opening of the bridge. The dynamic properties found from the results of the tests were compared with an analysis model. From the result of the ambient vibration tests of the cable supported bridge with R-FBI, it was confirmed that the dynamic properties were sensitive to the stiffness of the R-FBI in the bridge, and the seismic analysis model of the test bridge using the effective stiffness of the R-FBI was insufficient for reflecting the dynamic behavior of the bridge. In the case of cable supported bridges, the seismic design must follow the “Korean Highway Bridge Design Code (Limit State Design) for Cable supported bridges.” Therefore, in order to reflect the actual behavior characteristics of the R-FBI installed on cable-supported bridges, an improved seismic design procedure should be proposed.
The performance enhancement of various damping systems from natural hazards has become an highly important issue in engineering field. In this paper, ENTA hysteretic dampers were tested under cyclic loadings to evaluate their performance in terms of ductility and energy dissipation. The test results showed that the hysteretic dampers are effective damping systems to enhance the buildings performance for remodeling and retrofit of buildings. Also, the hysteretic dampers were modeled in FEM(Finite Element Method) structural analysis program. As comparing the computer modeling and the experiment, this study model reflects the nonlinear behavior of steel and derives the hysteresis loop.
