        PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to improve the performance of concrete pavements by measuring the unit-water content with an Internet-of-Things (IoT)-based unit-water content measurement device at an increased precision compared with that of existing measuring equipment. METHODS : We calculated the properties of concrete that varied according to variations in the unit-water content. To confirm the change in the performance of concrete pavements, we compared and analyzed the fatigue cracking rate and international roughness index of concrete pavements at the 20-year point of public use according to the changes in properties using the Korea Pavement Research Program(KPRP). RESULTS : We confirmed that IoT-based measurement equipment can improve the performance of pavements without changing their mixing designs or specifications. We confirmed that the performance of the concrete pavements changed significantly, even with unit-water content variations within the range of quality standards. According to IoT-based unit-water content management, we confirmed that the performance of the concrete pavement (fatigue cracking rate and international roughness index) improved without changing the mixing design. CONCLUSIONS : We confirmed that by using IoT-based unit-water content management, pavement performance can be improved. It is necessary to consider whether the application of this concept to other concrete property management items, such as the chloride content, is possible. Considering the changes in concrete properties according to the unit-water content based on laboratory tests and considerations of various load conditions will be necessary for future research.

        PURPOSES : The initial smoothness of concrete pavement surfaces must be secured to ensure better driving performance and user comfort. The roughness was measured after hardening the concrete pavement in Korea. When the initial roughness is poor, relatively large-scale repair works, such as milling or reconstruction must be performed. Hence, a method to measure the roughness of the concrete pavements in realtime during construction and immediately correct the abnormal roughness was developed in this study. METHODS : The profile of a concrete pavement section was measured at a construction site using sensors that were attached to the tinning equipment of the paver. The measured data included outliers and noise caused by the sensor and vibration of the paving equipment, respectively, which were further calibrated. Consequently, the calibrated data were input into the ProVAL program to calculate the roughness based on the international roughness index (IRI). Additionally, the profile of the section was re-measured using another method to verify the reliability of the calculated IRI. RESULTS : The profile data measured at the concrete pavement construction site were calibrated using methods, such as overlapped boxplot outlier removal and low-pass filtering. The outlier data from the global positioning system (GPS), which was installed to identify the construction distance, was also calibrated. The IRI was calculated using the ProVAL program by matching the measured profile and GPS data, and applying the moving average method. The calculated IRI was compared to that measured using another method, and the difference was within the tolerance. CONCLUSIONS : A method to measure the roughness of the concrete pavements in real time during construction was developed in this study. Hence, the performance of concrete pavements can be improved by enhancing the roughness of the pavement considerably using the aforementioned method.

        PURPOSES : The actual service life of repair methods applied to cement concrete pavement is analyzed based on de-icing agent usage. METHODS : Highway PMS data pertaining to de-icing agent usage are classified into three grades: low (1~5 ton/lane/year), medium (5~8 ton/lane/year), and high (greater than 8 ton/lane/year). The repair methods considered include diamond grinding, patching, joint repair, partial depth repair, and asphalt overlay on five major highways. The service life of each repair method is analyzed based on the usage level of the de-icing agent. RESULTS : The service lives of the applied repair methods are much shorter than expected. It is confirmed that the service life afforded by diamond grinding, patching, and joint repair methods are not significantly affected by the use of de-icing agents, whereas that afforded by asphalt overlay and partial depth repair methods is affected significantly. The service life afforded by the asphalt overlay and partial depth repair methods decreases at high usage levels of the de-icing agent (greater than 8 ton/lane/year). CONCLUSIONS : Among the repair methods considered, the service life afforded by partial depth repair and asphalt overlay is affected significantly by the amount of de-icing agent used. Additionally, the differences between the expected and actual analyzed service lives should be considered in the next-generation maintenance strategy for cement concrete pavements.

        PURPOSES : This paper presents the experimental results of tests conducted on concrete produced with air-cooled (AS) and water-cooled (WS) ground blast-furnace slag exposed to multi-deterioration environments of carbonation and scaling. METHODS : Carbonated and uncarbonated concrete specimens were regularly monitored according to the ASTM C 672 standard to evaluate the durability of concrete exposed to both scaling and combined carbonation and scaling conditions. Additionally, mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, flexural strength, and surface electric resistivity, were analyzed. RESULTS : It was found that concrete specimens produced with AS and WS had a beneficial effect on the mechanical properties because of the latent hydraulic properties of the AS and WS mineral admixtures. Moreover, carbonated concrete showed good scaling resistance in comparison to uncarbonated concrete, particularly for concrete produced with AS and WS. CONCLUSIONS : The improved scaling resistance of carbonated concrete showed that AS is a suitable option for binders used in cement concrete pavements subjected to combined carbonation and scaling.

        교면 포장은 교통하중 및 온도 변화 등의 환경적 요인에 따라 상판, 거더, 신축/압축 이음 등의 교량 상부 구조물의 복잡한 거동을 나타나기 때문에 도로포장의 구조 성능과는 다르다. 이에 본 논문에서는 가변형 팬믹서를 활용하여 개질유황 합성 시멘트 콘크리트(MSCC)를 혼합하는 새로운 방법을 제시하고자 한다. 혼합 단계는 건식 및 습식의 두 단계로 이루어지며, 회전 모터의 속도의 변화를 주어 혼합하는 방식이다. 제안된 방법의 타당성을 평가하기 위해 실내 실험을 실시하였으며, 본 기술 적용 시 MSCC의 내구성이 향상되고 교량 포장 설계 요건을 충족하는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 내구성 및 경제성을 고려하여 최적 MSCC 개질유황 함량을 4%로 제안하고자 한다. 현재 제안된 기술의 적용 가능성을 확인하기 위한 추가적인 현장 평가가 수행되고 있으며, 가까운 시일 내에 결과를 제시할 예정이다.

        As of 2016, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) manages a total of 16,327 lane miles of Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement, which represents an important asset to TxDOT. As PCC pavements in Texas built in the 1960s through 1980s have already exceeded or are approaching the end of their design lives, many of these projects will require rehabilitations of some form. Considering the expected steady increase in truck traffic in the future, PCC overlays represent one of the best options for that rehabilitation. Currently, guidelines on PCC pavement overlays on PCC pavement focus on overlay slab thickness determination, but do not provide clear directions on whether existing PCC pavement is a good candidate for concrete overlay, or if the pavement is a good candidate, which overlay type –bonded concrete overlay (BCO) or unbonded concrete overlay (UBCO) –is appropriate. Sound guidelines are needed for the selection of an optimum overlay type, especially for continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) overlays, which could extend the performance period of structurally deficient PCC pavements in Texas at a reasonable cost. In the present study, the evaluations of PCC overlay performance of various BCO and UBCO projects built in Texas were conducted to develop the BCO design procedures based on mechanistic-empirical principles, and the development of design guidelines for the selection of an optimum overlay type.

        PURPOSES : So far, aged cement concrete pavement on express highways has been rehabilitated mainly with asphalt concrete inlay. However, potholes were the major problem, and they shortened the life of the inlay mainly owing to the poor drainage of water once it infiltrated the interface of the concrete and asphalt. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance and economic efficiency of asphalt overlay and inlayMETHODS: Overlay and inlay were compared through accelerated pavement testing, and a life-cycle cost analysis was conducted in this study using the CA4PRS program.RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : It was found from accelerated pavement testing that the overlay exhibited reflective crack resistance that was more than twice as effective as that of inlay. The total cost (construction cost + user cost) within the analysis period (20 years) of the overlay was 37% lower than that of the inlay.

        PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to suggest the construction and quality control method for the re-repair of a deteriorated partial depth repair for sections of Portland cement concrete pavement. METHODS : An experimental construction was conducted to extend the repair width for removing an existing repair section. A removal method was used to ensure early performance for a deteriorated partial depth repair section. Bond strength and split tensile strength were measured at the near vertical interface layer between the existing pavement and repair material. The area was analyzed for various conditions such as the extended repair area and the removing method of the existing repair section. RESULTS : As a result of analysis of bond strength and split tensile strength, the bonding performance of a milling removed section was improved over a cutting and hand breaker removed section. The bond strength was analyzed to increase slightly as the extended repair width for removing the existing repair section increased. The split tensile strength did not show a clear relationship to an increased extended repair width of an existing removed repair section. CONCLUSIONS: The milling removal method should be applied in the removal of existing deteriorated partial depth repair sections. The extended repair width for a re-repair section should be wider than the existing partial depth repair with at least a 75-mm length and width for the bond strength and the split tensile strength.

        OBJECTIVES: This study is to develop the optimum mixing proportions for cement concrete pavement with using recycled aggregates. METHODS: The mixture varied recycled coarse aggregates content from 50 % to 100 % to replace the natural coarse aggregates by weight. Tests for fundamental properties as a cement concrete pavement were conducted before and after hardening of the concrete. RESULTS: It was found that the variation in the amount of the recycled aggregate affected the compressive and flexural strength development, as well as the chloride ion penetration resistance. As the amount of the recycled aggregate content increased the compressive and flexural strength and the resistance to chloride ion penetration decreased. However, the resistance to freeze-thaw reaction was affected significantly. In addition, the gradation of the aggregate became worse and hence so did the coarseness factor as the recycled aggregate amount increased. CONCLUSIONS : The fundamental properties of the concrete with recycled aggregate does not seem to be appropriate when the recycled aggregate quality is not guaranteed up to a some level and its replacement ratio is over 50%. The optimized gradation of the aggregates should also be sought when the recycled aggregate is used for the cement concrete pavement materials.

        PURPOSES: This paper describes the expansion caused by the alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) in concrete pavement currently in service. It also discusses the effects of joints installed to release the stress induced by the AAR expansion. METHODS: The expansion effect on concrete pavement was verified by a visual inspection and long-term measurement of the joint width of a cut-section. The behaviors of 16 newly installed joints were monitored as part of the investigation and long-term monitoring was carried out for three years after cutting. RESULTS: The behavior of a bridge was affected when AAR occurred in the connected pavement. The newly installed joints shrank in the longitudinal direction of the bridge after cutting. The width of the joints decreased over the six months after cutting. A large portion of the joint width (8.5cm) was found to have closed nine months after cutting. It had ultimately shrunk by about 92 percent when the final measurement was taken. CONCLUSIONS : The expansion of the pavement due to AAR was quantitatively described by visual inspection and the long-term monitoring of the newly cut joints. However, the width of the new joints decreased over the six to nine months after cutting. Additional research should be conducted to determine a means of controlling the expansion due to AAR in the pavement.

        PURPOSES : As a research to develop a cement treated base course for an airport pavement which can enhance its drainage, this paper investigated the strength, infiltration performance and durability of the pervious concrete with respect to maximum coarse aggregate sizes and compaction methods. METHODS : This study measured compressive strength, infiltration rate, continuous porosity and freeze-thaw resistance of pervious concrete specimens, which were fabricated with five different compaction methods and different maximum aggregate sizes. In addition, in order to reduce the usage of Portland cement content and to enhance environment-friendliness, a portion of the cement was replaced with Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS). RESULTS: Compressive strength requirement, 5 MPa at 7 days, was met for all applied compaction methods and aggregate sizes, except for the case of self-compaction. Infiltration rate became increased as the size of aggregate increased. The measured continuous porosities varied with the different compaction methods but the variation was not significant. When GGBS was incorporated, the strength requirement was successfully satisfied and the resistance to freezing-thawing was also superior to the required limit. CONCLUSIONS: The infiltration rate increased as the maximum size of aggregate increased but considering construct ability and supply of course aggregate, its size is recommended to be 25mm. With the suggested mix proportions, the developed pervious concrete is expected to successfully meet requirements for strength, drainage and durability for cement treated base or subbase course of an airport pavement.

        PURPOSES : This study is to investigate the fundamental properties of limestone added cement concrete for application of pavement. METHODS : As the production of Portland cement causes environmental problems, engineers have sought more environment-friendly concrete construction materials. Limestone powder can be used for concrete as a partial replacement of Portland cement. One of the great applications of limestone powder added cement concrete might be a cement concrete pavement since the concrete pavement consumes massive quantity of Portland cement. Experimental variables were different replacement level of limestone powder by 0% to 25% with 5% increment. Before hardening of fresh concrete, setting time and plastic shrinkage characteristics were investigated in addition to other basic properties. Properties of hardened concrete included compressive, tensile and flexural strength as well as drying shrinkage. RESULTS : The addition of limestone powder did not significantly affect the properties of fresh concrete. Strength deceased as the replacement ratio increased and when the replacement ratio was greater than 10% decrease rate increased. CONCLUSIONS : It was found that the partial replacement of the limestone powder to cement in pavement materials can be positively considered as its mechanical properties show comparable performance to those normal concrete.

        본 연구에서는 고로슬래그 미분말 및 플라이애시와 같은 광물질 혼화재를 사용한 친환경 고성능 3성분계 시멘트 콘크리트 교면 포장의 성능을 평가하기 위하여 실험을 하였다. 광물질 혼화재의 혼입률 변화에 따른 3성분계 시멘트 콘크리트의 최적배합을 찾기 위하여 압축강도 및 휨강도 시험을 하였으며 최적배합을 사용하여 내구성 시험인 염소이온 침투저항성, 동결융해, 박리 저항성, 균열 저항성 및 알칼리골재반응 시험으로 친환경 고성능 3성분계 시멘트 콘크리트 교면 표장의 내구성 평가 및 신 구 콘크리트의 부착력을 평가하기 위하여 부착강도 시험을 하였다. 시험결과, 시멘트 70%, 고로슬래그 미분말15% 및 플라이애시 15%의 배합 바인더에서 압축강도 및 휨강도가 우수하게 나타났으며 이를 최적배합으로 도출하였다. 실내 및 시험시공에서 최적 배합을 사용한 실험결과는 염소이온 침투 저항성, 동결융해 저항성, 표면박리 저항성, 알칼리골재 반응 억제 및 내마모성이 우수하게 나타났다. 또한, 특수 제작된 Polymer Cement Mortar(Brooming)를 사용한 신 구 콘크리트의 부착력에서도 우수한 성능을 나타냈다.

        국내 고속도로의 60% 이상이 시멘트 콘크리트 포장으로 건설되었으며, 그 중 공용년수가 20년이 넘어선 구간이 절반 이상에 달하고 있다. 노후화된 시멘트 콘크리트 포장의 보수 보강은 국내의 교통여건상 우회도로가 준비되기 어렵기 때문에 조기 교통개방이 요구되며 현재까지는 주로 아스팔트 덧씌우기가 사용되고 있다. 반면에 아스팔트 덧씌우기 포장은 조기 파손으로 인해 많은 유지보수비용이 지출됨과 동시에 도로사용자의 불편을 초래하고 있다. 최근 들어 노후화 된 시멘트 콘크리트 포장의 효율적인 보강공법으로 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 공법에 대해서 적용을 시도하고 있다. 따라서 아스팔트 덧씌우기 포장과 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 포장의 합리적인 선택에 대한 비교 분석을 위해 포장의 연도별 파손상태에 대한 다양한 data가 필요하다. 하지만, 국내에서는 아스팔트 덧씌우기 포장과 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 포장의 공용 중 파손상태에 대한 자료가 체계적으로 구축되어있지 않다. 본 연구에서는 아스팔트 덧씌우기와 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 공법이 적용된 구간의 파손에 대해 충분한 자료를 구축하고 있는 미국의 LTPP Data를 이용하여, 공용성에 대해서 평가하였다. 단, 아스팔트 덧씌우기와 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 공법은 파손형태가 서로 상이함으로써, 상대적인 비교를 위해 각각의 구간에 대해 포장상태지수(PCI, Pavement Condition Index)를 Database화 하였으며, 아스팔트 덧씌우기 구간과 접착식 콘크리트 덧씌우기 구간의 수명에 대해서 비교 분석을 수행하였다.
