This study examines the relationships between referring expressions and their referents in English and Korean language. Using the Accessibility as well as the Givenness frameworks (Ariel, 1991, 1994; Gundel et al., 1993), this study investigates the distribution of the referring expressions in each language and how they are related to the framework. Unlike most languages, in Korean, third-person pronouns are rarely used and definite constructions are not used, with the absence of definite and indefinite articles. With these differences in mind, this study aims to examine whether the framework of Gundel et al. (1993) bears its universality to account for the actual use of the distant languages such as English and Korean. Following Mulkern (1996) and Lee (2010), this study restricts its data in political news media discourse from the contrastive perspective. The data consists of ten English political news articles and twenty Korean political news articles published in 2017. The result confirms that both languages follow the general convention of news discourse to introduce a new entity with full names and prefer family names in subsequent mentions. However, further investigation is needed in terms of the use of pronouns in Korean because the distribution from this study differs from Lee's (2010).More contrastive research on different languages in different discourse contexts would shed more light on the universality of the Accessibility and Givenness frameworks.
‘Manhta/manhi’ and ‘duo’ are common expressions that can be used to express large quantity in Korean and Chinese, respectively. By conducting a comparative study on ‘manhta/manhi’ in Korean and ‘duo’ in Chinese, this article comes to a conclusion on different conditions where there are correspondence and non-correspondence concerning the constructions that include ‘manhta/manhi’ and ‘duo’. The constructions that include ‘manhta/manhi,’ ‘duo’ and verbs are (1) ‘manhi+transitive verbs’, ‘transitive verbs+duo’ and ‘duo+transitive verbs’; (2) ‘manhi+intransitive verbs’, ‘intransitive verbs+duo’ and ‘manhi+intransitive verbs’. The constructions that include ‘manhta’, ‘duo’ and nouns are (1) ‘nouns+manhta’ and ‘nouns+duo’; (2) ‘manhun+nouns’ and ‘duo+nouns’. By scrutinizing the constructions that include ‘duo’, ‘manhta’ and numeral and quantifier, and adjectives or adverbs according to their syntactic orders, the correspondence and non-correspondence between these constructions are summarized. In conclusion, this paper attempts to contribute to teaching and learning Korean for Chinese students, as well as teaching and learning Chinese for Koreans.
Lee Ha-young. 2015. “A Linguistic Contrastive Study on Korean and Japanese Persuasion Behaviors: Around strategic characteristics”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 23(3). 267~293. This study aimed to contrast and compare the Korean native speaker’s and the Japanese native speaker’s use patterns of language strategies in the persuasion situation from the perspective of politeness. Through this study, under the situation of ‘recommendation’ where the other being persuaded felt relatively less burden, the Korean native speaker and the Japanese native speaker showed the pattern using the same strategies for persuasion in the order of the ‘objectivity-pursuing strategy’ > the ‘speaker’s position-expression strategy’ > the ‘listener’s mind-inducement strategy’. Next, for the case that the other being persuaded was belonged to the lower status than the speaker in their social relations, it was found that Korean native speaker showed the tendency trying to persuade the other by using the ‘speaker’s position-expression strategy’ regardless the listener’s response types, but Japanese native speaker showed the pattern highly using the ‘speaker’s position-expression strategy’ only in the equal social relations between the speaker and the listener (the other being persuaded) if the other directly refuse the speaker’s suggestion. So far, this study investigated the both Korean native speaker’s and the Japanese native speaker’s use patterns of persuasion strategies through various variables.
This paper examines how Korean college EFL students use contrastive conjunctions in their argumentative writing in comparison with native speaker college students’ use of them. The data consists of a Korean college students’ writing corpus, which was divided into a lower proficiency group and a higher proficiency group, and an American and British university students’ writing corpus. The findings reveal that the first two most frequently occurring forms are but and however in all four groups, although the usage patterns such as positioning differ between the NS and the NNS groups. The third most frequent form is on the other hand in both NNS groups and yet in both NS groups, which shows an interesting difference in that the NNS groups hardly use yet in their writing. Both NNS groups also show frequent misuses of conjunctive adverbials such as in contrast, on the contrary, and on the other hand. The paper concludes with some pedagogical implications and suggestions.
This study compares the collocation of Korean and Mongolian language, using the noun 'head', which indicates the part of body. The purpose of this study is to analyze the semantic and syntactic aspects coping of collocation and give the linguistic explanation to the regularly appearing collocation aspects coping. The collocations can be defined as a nuclear of collocation which has transparent meaning, and limited combination of old vocabulary, which has no transparent meaning. Korean noun 'head' participates in the collocation usually with the meanings such as 'part of body, hair, inside of the head, spirit'. Especially, the meaning 'hair' appears the most frequently. In this case, the meaning of the 'head' equals to 'us', not the 'tolgoi'. This is because, mongolian noun 'tolgoi' has no meaning of 'hair'. Only one exception exists, where 'wash the head/wash the hair' can be represented in mongolian collocation “tolgoi ugaah/u's ugaah”. (wash the head/wash the hair) Consequently, among the 31 korean collocations there can be 27 mongolian collocation corresponding forms. And 16(+1) of them are composed with meaning 'tolgoi'. Furthermore, this study analyzes the mongolian word 'tolgoi' as a starting point and searches for its collocation corresponding forms. Mongolian noun 'tolgoi' has participated in the collocations with the meanings such as 'part of the body, spirit'. Among 22 collocations with the word 'tolgoi', there exists 16 korean collocation corresponding forms. 14 of them were with the meaning 'head'. In comparing the lexical semantic representation, mongolian and korean collocations may be equal. But the verbal meaning is not equal. And there are occasions where collocation corresponding forms does not exist at all. In this case, they can be interpreted by free join or an independent word. Syntactically, korean and mongolian collocations have shown almost the same configuration.
This paper aims to account for the idiosyncratic properties of the Contrastive Stripping Construction (CSC) in English. The main issues on this construction are how to generate its 4 possible skeletal structures and get the right contrastive reading from them. Rejecting the Movement-Ellipsis approaches facing theoretical and/or empirical problems, we propose a constructionbased analysis of the CSC which interacts the English CSC-cx rule with various lexical information of the lexemes such as and and but. This enables us to generate the 4 skeletal structures of the CSC and assign an appropriate contrastive reading to them.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the empirical adequacy of the event-based language typology with special reference to English and Korean. The event-based language typology classifies languages into I- and D-languages based on the importance of the initial and terminal bounds of an event with respects to the way the relevant languages use in the recognition of eventiveness. In I-languages, in which the initial bound of an event is important, activity and accomplishment are recognized as events, while in D-languages, where the terminal bound of an event is important, achievement and accomplishment are so recognized. English and Korean, the target languages of this study, show the characteristics of I- and D-languages respectively. In the case of English, we can confirm that it falls into D-languages based on the fact (1) that event cancellation is impossible and (2) that causative reading is possible in terms of the delimitation of predicates. In the case of Korean, we can tell that it belongs to I-languages as (3) event cancellation is possible and (4) only NPs that can work as an initiator can be the subject in the position of [Spec, FP-init].
