The purpose of this study is to select a fishing gear deposit marking method for the gear deposit system implemented for gillnet. The fishing gear deposit system was implemented in Korea for the first time in the world in January 2024 for fish trap, and it is scheduled to be expanded to gillnets and buoys by 2026. In this study, an AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) survey was conducted with 34 experts. The AHP analysis method was used to calculate the weights of each criterion that influence the selection of the deposit marking method, in order to determine the optimal marking method that considers both qualitative and quantitative criteria. Experts prioritized the label-type marking and preferred the weight-based deposit unit for its ease of application and ability to measure multiple gear widths at once. This study quantitatively reflects the opinions of experts on the selection of the gillnet deposit system. Future research should examine the impact of marking method on fishing performance, durability, and institutional improvements.

This project aimed to understand the near-infrared (NIR), intensity, and reflectivity characteristics of LiDAR for measuring retroreflectivity and to understand the correlation between the characteristics of LiDAR and retroreflectivity. A 600 m-testbed was investigated using a survey vehicle equipped with LiDAR, and the testbed retroreflectivity and LiDAR data measurement values were compared. The reflectivity and intensity at night were not affected by sunlight compared with daytime, enabling stable data collection. However, NIR reacted very sensitively to sunlight, and the difference between daytime and nighttime NIR values was very large. In addition, by comparing the absolute error between the retroreflectivity and LiDAR data, we observed that the reflectivity was consistent with the data difference between day and night, and it was not significantly affected by sunlight. However, the intensity showed that the daytime measurement data were more scattered than the nighttime measurement data, resulting in low-precision collection stability caused by sunlight. An analysis of the correlation between retroreflectivity and LiDAR data using 40 data points revealed that the reflectivity and intensity data at night were highly correlated with retroreflectivity, with a P-value of less than 0.05. Reflectivity and intensity values at night correlate with retroreflectivity. The NIR light is sensitive to sunlight. Thus, it can be used as a solar correction index for future retroreflectivity analyses using intensity.

This study assessed the current global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and understand the domestic scenario, particularly focusing on pavement-marking works during road-construction projects. Using internationally commercialized programs, this study aimed to calculate carbon emissions from these projects, identify areas that require further action or improvement, and propose strategies to address them. Carbon dioxide emissions from pavement-marking projects were estimated. For a 5,746 m2 construction project, a total of 96.637 was emitted; for a 5,032 m2 project with four types of markings, 89.840 was emitted. A project involving five types of markings, traffic controls, and safety measures resulted in 6.662 emissions. On average, 16.8 was emitted per 1 m2, with 17.8 for the four types and 9.3 for the five types of markings. This study is significant because it calculated the carbon dioxide emissions from domestic pavement-marking works. The use of unit price data is convenient, and for more accurate calculations, expanding environmental product declaration (EPD) certified items and accelerating the establishment of a domestic life-cycle inventory (LCI) are recommended.

algorithms for deriving and analyzing retroreflectivity influence factors through regression analysis. METHODS : An experimental road lane was created to examine the trends of retroreflectivity and LiDAR intensity values, and a controlled indoor experiment was conducted to identify influencing factors. The optimal algorithm was developed by regression analysis of the experimental data. RESULTS : The significance probability (P-value) through SPSS linear regression analysis was 0.000 for measured height, 0.001 for perpendicular angle, 0.157 for vertical angle, and 0.000 for LiDAR intensity, indicating that measured height, vertical angle, and LiDAR intensity are significant factors because the significance probability is less than 0.05, and vertical angle is not significant. The NNR regression model performed the best, so the measurement data with height (1.2m, 2m, 2.2m) and vertical angle (11.3°, 12.3°, 13.5°) were analyzed to derive the optimal LiDAR Intensity measurement height and vertical angle. CONCLUSIONS : For each LiDAR measurement height and vertical angle, the highest correlation between LiDAR Intensity and retroreflectivity was found at a measurement height of 1.2 meters and a vertical angle of 12.3°, where the model learning accuracy (R2) was the highest.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of improving the retroreflectivity of pavement marking by increasing the refractive index of glass bead. METHODS : Pavement marking test-beds has been installed in National Highway 19, 42 and KICT Yeoncheon SOC Center. In testbeds several marking sections were installed for each type of marking materials and glass beads. In this test-beds initial dry and wet retroreflectivity were measured and analyzed. RESULTS : When the refractive index of glass bead was adjusted upward in water based paint(glass bead No.1→ No.2), dry retroreflectivity increased by about 30 to 70%, and wet retroreflectivity slightly increased by about 10 to 40%. When using glass bead No. 2 in water based paint, it was found to meet the standards of the Road Traffic Act. However, since wet retroreflectivity of water based paint slightly exceeds the standard value, a follow-up investigation is needed to determine how long this performance can be maintained. When using glass bead No.1 in MMA(methyl methacrylate), the average wet retroreflectivity was evaluated to be 128 to 150 mcd/lx/m2, and when using glass bead No.2, the average wet retroreflectivity was evaluated to be about 200 to 270 mcd/lx/m2. Accordingly, MMA showed the best performance compared to other paints. CONCLUSIONS : When using glass bead No.1 in water-soluble paints and thermoplastic, it did not meet the wet retroreflectivity standards of the Road Traffic Act. But when using glass bead No.2, it met the wet retroreflectivity standards. As a result of analyzing the road marking budget according to the upward adjustment of the refractive index of glass bead, it was analyzed that if only the material class was adjusted upward, the cost would increase by more than twice the current budget. In order to decrease this budget increase rate(to increase service life), it is necessary to strengthen quality control standards for pavement marking and develop scientific-systematic quality control techniques.

PURPOSES : In this paper, problems and improvements in pavement marking standards are proposed as a result of the analysis of domestic/foreign standards and field data. METHODS : In this study, the US FHWA and all state standards were analyzed and domestic pavement marking standards were compared and analyzed. In addition, national highway marking test data, namely the Yeoncheon Test-Bed data, and data from Hawkins et al. (2015) were analyzed. Based on this, problems and improvements in the Korean pavement marking standards are proposed. RESULTS : As a result of literature and field data analysis, various problems were found in the Road Traffic Act and National Police Agency manual. In this standard, there is no definition of Qd; the RD reference value is set too low; and the RW and RR reference values are difficult to be considered reasonable values. CONCLUSIONS : There is an aspect in which the standard items and values of pavement markings are set under some policy judgment. Therefore, it is necessary to properly revise the standards, considering technical and economic aspects.

PURPOSES : Aiming to evaluate the consistency of road markings at night, the luminance values of road markings at night were compared for merging and diverging areas. METHODS : To evaluate the consistency of road marking at nighttime in merging and diverging areas, the highway geometric structures and luminance of the road markings were collected and analyzed together at the merging and diverging areas. "Luminance" in this study referred to the overall luminance of the road markings as reflected together from surrounding lights, such as moonlight or artificial lights. The luminance of the road markings 90 m ahead of the driver were used. The measured luminance values were analyzed based on the difference ratios and an analysis of variance. RESULTS : Based on a grouping of three categories (interchanges (ICs), merging, and diverging areas), it was found that the difference ratios and analysis of variance values from the ICs and merging and diverging areas were not consistently acceptable. CONCLUSIONS : After evaluating the consistency of road markings at night in the merging and diverging areas, it can be concluded that there is a need for more consistency in the luminance on merging and diverging areas on highways. To enhance consistency, more dedicated lighting guidance for merging and diverging areas on highway areas may be necessary.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to preliminarily examine the field applicability of modular pavement marking tape (PMT) to increase the lane awareness of motorists on existing roadways. METHODS : A pavement marking tape (PMT) comprises an adhesion layer and a paint coating layer. The adhesion layer is prepared using gussasphalt-based materials that have properties similar to those of existing asphalt materials. Thermal adhesion is performed to adhere the tape to the pavement. For the paint coating layer, polyurea materials are selected after reviewing the existing materials suitable for pavement lane marking. To conduct field evaluations on the adhesion layer, monitoring is performed after the pilot deployment of the PMT is completed. Twelve samples are prepared to investigate the optimal ratios for the mixture of paint coating layer materials. The durability of the PMT is examined using a turntable road-marking test system (RPA) with a wheel load on the samples. A total of 50,000 RPA, equivalent to P4, is performed. The performance is evaluated by capturing the retroreflectivity measure, which is used as an indicator of the pavement marking performance. The PMT is utilized on a roadway segment with significant heavy vehicle traffic, and continuous monitoring is performed to examine its performance in the field. RESULTS : Based on a visual inspection of the adhesion layer material, no significant issue is observed in terms of the adhesion performance of the PMT. Furthermore, the overall retroreflectivity obtained from the RPA exceeds 300 mcd/m2·lux. It is discovered that the optimal ratios for the mixture of polyurea and binder for the paint coating layer are 4:6 and 2:8, respectively, which results in a retroreflectivity that is 90% or above the initial retroreflectivity. Using a prototype of the PMT for field tests, a performance evaluation is conducted by analyzing the retroreflectivity measured after 2 and 7 weeks from the prototype deployment. The retroreflectivity measured for the first 2 weeks after the deployment appears acceptable for field use. However, the retroreflectivity is reduced significantly when it is measured 7 weeks after deployment, resulting in the necessity for a more reliable material that can retain long-term durability. CONCLUSIONS : The lane awareness of a motorist is crucial for accident mitigation under not only nighttime driving, but also severe weather conditions. In this regard, modular PMT is expected to increase the lane awareness of motorists, thereby improving the quality of lane marking materials. In this study, various exploratory field tests are conducted to analyze the field applicability of the PMT. It is noteworthy that the results presented herein are obtained from preliminary performance evaluations of the PMT. Hence, further investigations pertaining to the long-term durability of PMTs must be conducted using advanced test equipment such as an accelerated pavement tester.

PURPOSES : In this study, the luminance of night road markings was measured in a tunnel of length 200 m or less. The purpose of the project is to evaluate the consistency of night road markings. METHODS : In this study, field measurements were conducted to achieve the purpose of this study. Five tunnels with lengths of less than 200 m were selected to measure the luminance value of the road markings. The analysis of the difference in road markings between the inside and outside points of the tunnel and the analysis of alternative tunnels and points were used to assess the consistency of road markings in tunnels. RESULTS : The average luminance of the tunnel’s night road markings was 9.7, and the standard deviation was 3.0. The analysis of variance for the tunnel and point indicated that the p-value was less than 0.05 and was inconsistent. CONCLUSIONS : In conclusion, consistency was assessed by measuring the luminance value of the short tunnel of length 200 m in the Cheongju Sangju Expressway, and it was confirmed that the luminance of the road markings was not consistent with the tunnel and point. Finally, it is necessary to control night lightings on roads outside the tunnel or adjust lighting facilities in the tunnel to enhance the consistency of luminance.

PURPOSES : In this study, the relationship between the types of road pavement markings and the visibility distance under adverse weather conditions was evaluated. METHODS : Rainy and foggy conditions at the weather proving ground were replicated in this study. The researchers recorded the visibility distance corresponding to each experiment scenario comprising the weather conditions and pavement marking types. RESULTS : Visibility distances under adverse weather conditions decreased more than those of normal weather conditions. Under rainy conditions, the average visibility distance across all pavement markings decreased by 33%. However, the average visibility distance across all pavement markings foggy conditions decreased by 46.8%. Based on the test results of the visibility distance, the speed reduction rates corresponding to the adverse and normal weather conditions, i.e., 24% and 36% speed reduction under rainy and foggy conditions, respectively, were established. CONCLUSIONS : This study validated the reduction in the visibility distance affected by weather conditions by applying actual road scale weather proving ground. In addition, speed reduction was recommended for safe driving under adverse weather conditions.

PURPOSES : This study evaluated the effects of dynamic road marking (DRM) on the reduction in drivers’ workload under rainy conditions. Changes in workload in two cases were evaluated: only-lane marking and a combination of lane marking and DRM. METHODS : Rainy conditions were simulated by utilizing the full-scale road weather proving ground. Moreover, participants’ eye movements were used as the indicators for workload. RESULTS : Workload in case of the combination of lane marking and DRM was found to decrease by 44.6% compared to the case of onlylane marking, under the rain intensity of 15 mm/h. Moreover, workload decreased by 50.7% in case of the combination of lane marking and DRM compared to the only-lane marking case, under 30 mm/h rain intensity. CONCLUSIONS : This study validated the positive effects of the DRM in workload reduction under rainy conditions.

Although understanding dispersal ecology is important of Haemaphysalis longiconirs (Acari: Ixodidae) to control severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, the small size of H. longicornis makes it challenging to study their behaviors. We examined the potential of fluorescent marking system (FMS) paired with an ultraviolet laser, an effective insect detection method, in tracking of H. longicornis. When we assessed potential effects of FMS on the survivorship and behavioral parameters including horizontal movement, vertical climbing height, and response to CO₂ of all development stages (larva, nymph, and adult) of H. longicornis, it did not induce any adverse effects on the hard ticks. Furthermore, we measured the detectable distance and detection rate of larvae, nymphs and adults to evaluate the detection efficacy of FMS. Using an ultraviolet laser, operators could detect the hard ticks from a distance ranging from 12 m (larva) to 29 m (adult). When the detection rate was measured in a grassland both during day and night, it was higher at night compared to day and increased with the body size. The detection rate was over 90% for all stages of the hard ticks at night, whereas larvae and nymphs showed that of 23% and 34% respectively during the day. However, the detection rate of adults was higher compared to other development stages regardless of time of experiment. Our results indicate that FMS can serve as a promising tool to track the hard ticks by providing reliable detection efficacy with no adverse effects on the marked individuals.

In Korea, a vehicle overtaking is prohibited by the law in tunnel and bridge sections where a road section has lanes with solid line. However, this regulation has some problems in terms of traffic operation and safety. So, it is necessary to find a way to improve the lane operation in tunnel and bridge sections. The objective of this research is to propose a systematical logic and specific standards to draw up an improvement of lane operation in tunnel and bridge sections on expressways. For that purpose, the status of lane operation in tunnel and bridge sections on both of the domestic and the abroad expressways and the improvement effect of the lane management were analyzed and, followed by it, the ways to improve lane management were suggested. In the comparison of the number of traffic accidents between road sections and tunnel sections, it was resulted that the number of traffic accidents per unit length (1km) of tunnel sections was lower than that of road sections. In addition, in the comparison of the fatality of traffic accidents, the fatality of tunnel sections on expressways was lower than that of other road tunnel sections. Through the analysis, it was resulted that there was a low correlation between the permission of the lane change in tunnel sections and the increase of traffic accidents. Moreover, in the comparing the traffic accidents between expressway tunnels and other road tunnels as well as between road sections and tunnel sections on expressways, there was no significant difference in safety between the solid line sections and the dotted sections. As a result of the analysis on the pilot operation section, it was expected that there would be no serious problems even if the permission of the lane change in tunnel and bridge sections was implemented, because the difference between in the existing solid-line sections and the pilot dotted line sections in terms of the lane change rate, the traffic characteristic, and the traffic accidents is not significant. Therefore, it needs to improve the current solid-line lane operation forbidding the lane change in tunnel and bridge sections. It is necessary to allow the lane change in tunnel and bridge sections with an appropriate level of facility conditions. In the long run, as in the cases of foreign countries, it is require to establish a principle to permit the lane change in tunnel and bridge sections. However, if necessary, it is need to consider the prohibition of the lane change in some tunnel sections by the engineering judgment. Allowing the lane change of the car in tunnel sections is not only merely a change of the lane operating method but also it is expected to be an important opportunity to increase the adherence of the driver to the laws and regulations and to change the drive culture by introducing a consistent traffic regulation.

Both a fluorescent marking system (FMS) and a portable harmonic radar system (PHRS) are effective insect tracking methods. Prior to comparing their efficacies, we tested the viability of FMS in detection of an agricultural pest, Riptortus pedestris (Hemiptera: Alydidae); previous studies showed the harmlessness of PHRS on R. pedestris and its detection distance. Fluorescent marking allowed the detection of marked R. pedestris from > 25 m, when illuminated with a laser in the dark, while affecting only the vertical walking distance of the insect. Then, we assessed the efficacy of the FMS and PHRS as well as combining both methods (BOTH) in detection of R. pedestris in a grass field and a bean field during day and night. PHRS and BOTH showed higher detection rates than FMS in all settings, except for in the bean field at night. Also, although BOTH did not enhance total detection time, it facilitated the retrieval of the sample at night compared to only using PHRS.

OBJECTIVES : Visibility at night can be improved by using retroreflection for short distances and phosphorescent line markings for long distances. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of the phosphorescent line marking through a laboratory luminance test. Field performance analysis was performed through tests conducted on the road. We also examined the luminance measurement methods using the digital image obtained during the phosphorescent visibility evaluation. METHODS : In this study, the laboratory luminance test of the phosphorescent line marking was conducted using seven specimens to characterize the luminance changes according to the type of the glass beads, the thickness of the phosphorescent line marking, and the brightness and irradiation time of the light source. Phosphorescent and general line markings were made at 150 m to investigate the field luminance performance. A preliminary review of the luminance measurement methods was made using a digital image from a digital singlelens reflex (DSLR) camera. The measured luminance ratio of the general and the phosphorescent line markings was compared with the calculated luminance ratio using luminance analysis. RESULTS: Through the laboratory luminance test, it was seen that the change in luminance, which corresponds to the brightness of the light source, appears large but the influence of the thickness and irradiation time is low. The field performance test of the phosphorescent line marking conducted on the road involved measuring the luminance on the day the marking was made and 7 days after the marking was made. The luminance was found to be 190 mcd/m2 at 30 min after sunset and approximately 10-12 mcd/m2 4h after sunset. The results of the luminance test were captured using a digital image for each time group. The luminance ratio of the phosphorescent line marking, when compared to that of the general line marking, showed a similar trend within a 13% maximum error. Additionally, when this luminance ratio is compared to the direct field measurement, it could be confirmed that the luminance ratio, as captured in the digital image, showed a similar tendency. CONCLUSIONS : 1) The change in luminance corresponding to the brightness of the light source is significant in comparison with that corresponding to the thickness and the irradiation time. In addition, the results of the field test for the phosphorescent line marking satisfied the phosphorescent fire protection standard. 2) We examined the validity of the luminance measurement method using a digital image and we concluded that the change in the luminance ratio shows a similar tendency in both the cases. The results can form the basis for luminance measurement methodology for the construction and maintenance of phosphorescent line markings.
