We report the current status of Japanese lunar exploration SELENE (SELenological and ENgineering Explorer). As of the end of 2004, scientific instruments onboard the Main Orbiter are under final checkout before they are provided to the proto-flight-model (PFM) integration test. Also, we present the future perspectives of the lunar based instruments and facilities. 'In-situ Lunar Orientation Mea-surement (ILOM)' experiment measures the lunar rotation with high accuracy by tracking stars on the Moon with a small photo-zenith-tube type optical telescope. A basic idea of a radio telescope array of very low frequency range on the lunar far-side is also mentioned.

We have carried out a precise Doppler survey of G-type giants aiming to unveil the properties of planetary systems in intermediate-mass stars (1.5-5M⊙). G-type giants are promising targets for Doppler planet searches around massive stars, because they are slow-rotators and have many sharp absorption lines in their spectra and their surface activities are relatively low in contrast to their younger counterparts on the main-sequence (B-A stars). We are now monitoring radial velocities of about 300 late G-type (including early K-type) giants using HIgh Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph (HIDES) at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. We have achieved a Doppler precision of about 6-7 m/s over a time span of 3 years using an iodine absorption cell. We found that most of the targets have radial velocity scatters of σ ~ 10-20 ms-1 over 1-3 years, with the most stable reaching levels of 6-8 m s-1. Up to now, we have succeeded in discovering the first extrasolar planet around a G-type giant star HD 104985, and also found several candidates showing significant radial velocity variations, suggesting the existence of stellar and substellar companions. Observations have continued to establish their variability.

To date, more than 150 exo-solar planets have been observed by various methods such as spectroscopic, photometric, astrometric, gravitational lensing, pulsar timing methods. However, all these are indirect methods; they do not directly image the planets. Only free-floating planets or their 'ana-log' have been directly detected so far. Thus the next milestone is the direct imaging of any kinds of planetary mass objects orbiting around normal (young) stars, which might have been associated with protoplanetary disks, the sites of planet formation. I will describe some SUBARU efforts to detect self-luminous young giant planets as companions as well as direct imaging of the protoplanetary disks of ${\~}$ 수식 이미지100 AU size. The results of near-infrared coronagraphic imaging with adaptive optics are briefly presented on AB Aur, HD 142527, T Tau, and DH Tau. Our results demonstrate the importance of high-resolution (${\~}$ 수식 이미지0.1 arcsec) direct imaging over indirect observations such as modeling based on spectral energy distributions. The SUBARU observations are a prelude to ALMA from the morphological point of view.

I report here about the future direction of cooperation of astronomy in East Asia region, which has been a long-years subject of the EAMA since 1990. During this EAMA-6 we had many positive discussions and remarkable progress toward the promotion of our cooperation. We also had an 'East Asian Observatory' WG meeting yesterday with many attendants, and actively discussed this important subject in some detail. The following report is to summarize the fruitful products we had in the EAMA-6 discussions and in past EAMA activities, and to propose a direction and some action items toward the bright future of astronomy in East Asia.

The purpose of the East Asian Young Astronomers Meeting (EAYAM) is to provide a chance for young astronomers from or working in China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan to meet, learn about each other's scientific research, exchange ideas and cultural views, and find out more about leading research facilities in the different member regions. I report on the inaugural EAYAM held in Taiwan in 2003, and the future of this meeting. The purpose of the EAMA Schools is to teach young astronomers how to make best use of the research facilities of member regions. The first EAMA school is currently being organized to better inform young astronomers on using the SUBARU telescope.

Astronomical research in Asian Pacific region has been growing rapidly in recent years. However, most important papers have been published in well established existing journals in US and Europe because we do not have high impact international journals in this region. I review the current trends of the local journals of East Asian countries and propose to establish a new regional journal by combining domestic journals.

The working group for an infrared telescope(IRT) toward East Asian Observatory has been set up in EAMA6. This report declares the membership of IRT working group, reviews briefly the activities of promoting the IRT, and puts forward the future plan.

This is to summarize a joint discussion on the future of EAMA in EAMA6. The emphasis was placed on the near future instead of the distant future, Formation of the Working Groups as a means to carry the cooperation for the regions was generally agreed by the attendants of EAMA6 to be the best way toward the establishment of future East Asian Observatory (EAO). Association of Core Observatories (ACO) was proposed to bring resources and foster joint projects for EAMA activities.
