For an effective management of fisheries resources, we need fisheries informations necessary for the establishment of reasonable fishing effort and TAC distribution. To study the present state of by-catch and discard of gill-net fishery in the East Sea, we carried out fishing research using trammel nets in the coastal sea of Susan-port (Yangyang), Jangho-port (Samcheok) and Hupo-port (Uljin). As a result, a total of catch of Susan was 259,172g and that of Hopo was 577,638g. Thus Catch of Susan was 1.49 times more than that of Hupo considering the number of used fishing gear. And catch of Janho was 7.4 times more than that of Susan considering the number of experiment. Two methods of by-catch analysis in this study were used, one method is standardizing of listed species catching possible in fishing license, another method is regarding catch species under 1% of total catch as by-catch. As a result of by-catch analysis of two method, by-catch rate of Susan was 6.55% and 5.87% respectively, that of Hupo was 44.70% and 5.24% and that of Jangho was 0.96% and 2.31%. Discard rate of fish in Susan, Hupo and Jangho were 1.59%, 3.42%, 2.23% respectively.
A mathematical model is formulated to study the effect of wall mass on the thermal performance of four different houses of different construction. This analytical study was motivated by the experimental work of Burch et al. An analytical solution of one -dimensional, linear, partial differential equation for wall temperature profiles and room air temperatures is obtained using the Laplace transform method. Typical Meteorological Year data are processed to yield hourly average monthly values. These discrete data are then converted to a continuous, time dependent form using a Fast Fourier Transform method. This study is conducted using weather data from four different locations in the United States: Albuquerque, New mexico; Miami, Florida; Santa Maria, California; and Washington D.C. for both winter and summer conditions. A computer code is developed to calculate the wall temperature profile, room air temperature, and energy consumption loads. Three sets of results are calculated one for no auxiliary energy and two for different control mechanism -- an on-off controller and a proportional controller. Comparisons are made for the cases of two controllers. Heavy weight houses with insulation in mild weather areas (such as August in Santa Maria, California) show a high comfort level. Houses using proportional control experience a higher comfort level in comparison to houses using on-off control. The result shows that there is an effect of mass on the thermal performance of a heavily constructed house in mild weather conditions.
This study was intended to determine the maneuverability of the vessel CHARMBADA. When the rudder angle was at 10˚, 20˚ and 30˚, the maximum advance by slow, half and full ahead were varied in the range of 523.6-131.3m, 528.8-177.2m and 530.6-219.7m, respectively. The maximum transfer was 799.9-181.3m, 792.1-232.8m and 807.7-316.9m, respectively. The turning circle ability was better during starboard turning. When the rudder angle was 10˚, 20˚ and 30˚, variation in the maximum advances was 392.0m, 245.0m and 153.0m. The maximum transfer was 528.0m, 339.0m and 218.0m, respectively based on the regression equations. As the rudder angle became bigger, the maximum advance or maximum transfer became smaller by the exponential function. The advance inertia took 127sec, 145sec, 181sec each until the vessel speed was 7.0konts, 12.0konts, 17.0konts. The static inertia took 245sec, 269sec, 300sec each until the vessel speed was under 2.0konts and the advance distance was 114.4m, 181.2m, 197.0m each. Accordingly, the static inertia was inclined to increase to scale according to the increase in vessel speed. For the CHARMBADA, the smaller the rudder angle was, the much bigger the turning circle became due to adhesion to the skeg, thereby lowering the vessel's turning ability.
The ship's heading information of hybrid GPS/EM compass were applied to the AIS of fishing vessel and examined the possibility of accuracy improvement. It is observed 453 each in AIS receiver of land among 3,982 each in AIS Rx/Tx transponder of the test ship at sea, and transmission interval according to the speed of ship is determined the 11.4% good transmitting data of the all information. In results, maximum compass error for the ship's heading of an EM compass was 19.1˚. The variance of ship's heading owing to the speed of ship is surveyed. The COG (Course Over Ground) was changed extremely in 180˚W-179˚E range under 4.9knots, and in 24˚W-23˚E range over 4.9knots. Finally, using the ship's heading of EM compass and the COG from GPS for the autopilot system of a small fishing boat and the ship's heading information of AIS results in danger on the own ship's navigation safety and leads to make confusion both the others and VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) center. Therefore, the hybrid GPS/EM compass is identified as the best system for a small fishing boat and is allowed to offer continuously a ship's heading information with high accuracy and stability.
Ecosystem-based fisheries management requires a holistic assessment of the status of fisheries by integrating fishery ecosystem indicators for management objectives. In this study four objectives were identified such as the maintenance of the sustainability, biodiversity and habitat quality and socio-economic benefits. The ecosystem-based fisheries assessment (EBFA) model to assess fisheries and their resources at the ecosystem level developed for Korean fisheries (Zhang et al., 2009) has a number of indicators for three management objectives. However, it was found that there were some overlapping components among indicators and that there were difficulties in assessing some indicators in the EBFA model. This study identified problems of the approach and suggested more pragmatic and simpler indicators. It also presented alternative reference points to assess indicators and discussed issues associated with the application of the EBFA model to a marine ranching ecosystem. In this study a total of 24 indicators were used for the assessment which included 4 socio-economic indicators. New indicators and reference points were demonstrated by applying it to the Uljin marine ranch.
In this research, the submersible fish cage was designed to avoid structural and biological damage during harsh sea conditions. The submersible cage system consists of netting, mooring ropes, a floating collar, floats, sinkers and anchors. Whole elements of the cage were modeled on the mass-spring model. The computer simulations were carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of the cage and to calculate mooring line tension subjected to tidal currents and waves. As expected, the tension values in the mooring line of the submerged position are 36% less compared to that of the surface cage under the same loading conditions. As the wave was used in combination with the current velocity of 1m/s, the average tensile load for the submerged cage showed 85% of the value for the floating cage. The simulation results provide an improved understanding of the behaviors of the structure and valuable information on the optimized design of the cage system exposed to open ocean environmental factors.
As a series of studies about improvement of yellow croaker drift gill net fishing gear and development of the labor saving fishing system, this study analyzed the behavior characteristics of fishing gear, which does use three types of different sinker materials in the field tests. The result of maritime performance test indicated that the fishing gear which used the lead reached the maximum depth and bio ceramics hauled to the surface of water the fastest. The correlation between the sinking time (St) and depth (Dsl, Dsc, Dsb) of maritime performance test can be shown such experimental equations as Dsl=2.70St - 0.75, Dsc = 2.38St - 1.15, Dsb = 1.77St - 4.00. The correlation between the hauling time (Ht) and depth (Dhl, Dhc, Dhb) of maritime performance test can be shown such experimental equations as and Dhl = 7.88Ht + 35.48, Dhc = 7.80Ht + 40.01, Dhb = 7.95Ht + 36.44.
Experimental fishing was carried out to compare fishing status according to the codend mesh size (raschel, 15mm, 25mm, 35mm, 45mm) of stow net on anchor in the coastal waters of Seocheon after manufacturing five kinds of fishing gears and commercial fishing boat (7.93 tons) was used for it. Total catches of raschel, 15mm, 25mm, 35mm, 45mm codend were 816,949g, 203,994g, 1,405g, 51,576g, 194g in September and 40,545g, 66,974g, 14,692g, 12,647g, 12,655g in October. Dominance species were anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) in raschel codend, largehead hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) in 15mm and 35mm in September, and the amount of catches was very small in 25mm and 45mm codend due to the fishing gear damage. In October, dominance species were anchovy and beka squid (Loligo beka) in raschel, 15mm, 25mm codend, and cuttlefish (Sepia esculenta) and beka squid were mainly caught in 35mm and 45mm codend. In addition, total length of anchovy and cardinal fish (Apogon lineatus) were increased according to the increase of codend mesh size but there was no difference in the mantle length of cuttlefish and loligo beka.
This study examined the maturation and main spawning season of Japanese spear lobsters, Linuparus tirgonus(Von Siebold) captured around Jeju island from January to September, 2008. Carapace length(CL), body weight(BW) and gonad weight(GW) were measured. Gonadosomatic index(GSI) and sex ratio were calculated. In female group, CL showed the highest value in June and decreased after August. GW showed a peak in July and decreased rapidly after August. The mean gonadosomatic Index(GSI) reached a maximum value between June and August. Number of egg ranged from 143,360 to 189,504.
The main purpose of this research is to analyze economic feasibility of biodegradable sonw crab gill net model project. The results of benefit/cost analysis show that use of the biodegradable gear is economically feasible. Assuming that the rate of gill net lost is 5 percent, net present value was estimated 311,898,282-590,533,375won, benefit-cost ratio 1.816-1.923 and internal rate of return 7.96-10.59%. The development and diffusion of biodegradable fishing gear appear to make a significant contribution to fisheries resource conservation and marine ecosystem protection. In addition, biodegradable gear production firms may have a good opportunity of exporting it to other coastal states, depending on the progress of WTO subsidy negotiation.
According to the recent statistics of marine casualties in Korea, fishing boats are more likely to be ended in the casualties, and small fishing boats especially cause much more accidents in sinking and capsizing than any other big vessels. These casualties were mainly produced from the ignorance on the lack of own ship stability. From this view, this study aims to analyze the characteristics of stability on the crab trap fishing boat receiving transverse wave by means of carrying out the water tank test. The rolling angle of the model ship was affected largely with the displacement and the wave period of it, and the trends were shown that the magnitude of the angle was proportional to the displacement, but inversely to the wave period. And the wave height had effect on the rolling angle just in the specific range of the wave period. The force of steady wind didn't have influence on the rolling variation significantly.
In order to obtain the fundamental data for the marine ranch, this paper was carried out to investigate cortisol variation in blood according to adapted time in the measurement of auditory threshold. The groups were adapted at the experimental tanks for 0.5, 1, 3 and 6 hours, respectively. At the results, cortisol concentration had a deep connection with adapted time. In particular, cortisol concentration in the experimental group of 1 hour was significantly increased, whereas others showed no difference comparing with the control group. When classical conditioning method with the sound coupled with a delayed electric shock was given after the adapted time of 1 hour and 6 hours, the rate of the conditioning completion for 6 hours was higher than that of 1 hour. Therefore, this suggests that the sufficient adapted time was required for the accurate auditory threshold.
Swimming crabs, Portunus trituberculatus(Miers) are commercially important off the coasts of Korea, Japan and China. Harvest of swimming crabs has been fluctuated along their distribution ranges. Fluctuations in the interannual harvest of swimming crabs may be correlated with the survival rate during the larval period. The survival rates, intermolt periods, and growth of larval swimming crabs were investigated in the laboratory. Larval swimming crabs are released and undergo development from April to August off the western coast of Korea in the Yellow Sea. Sea surface temperatures off the western coast of Korea during the larval season were used for the laboratory experiments, and ranged from 22 to 26℃. Larvae were individually cultured at four different temperatures, 22℃, 24℃, 26℃, and 28℃. Zoea molted to megalopa at all temperatures and developed to the first crab stage at 24℃, 26℃, and 28℃. Survival rates from zoea I to the first crab stage increased with increasing temperatures. Intermolt period and the growth rate of the mean carapace length were inversely correlated with temperature. Our research helps understand the changes in survival rate and growth of larval swimming crabs resulting from changing oceanic temperatures. Further, our study suggests that the fluctuations in fishery harvest of swimming crabs off the coast of Korea may be related to changes in larval survival affected by changing ocean conditions.
Maturation and spawning of the jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus was investigated based on the samples captured in the coastal waters around Jeju Island from January 2007 to December 2008. Gonadosomatic index began to increase in March, and reached a maximum between April to June. After spawning it began to decrease from August. Reproductive season was estimated to March-July, with peak in April. Fecundity was proportional to the size of the female, with the clutch size varying from 33,493 eggs in the smallest female(FL=27.0cm) to 627,061 eggs in the largest(FL=40.6cm). Size at 50% sexual maturity(FL50), determined from mature females, was 26.6cm FL. Annual reproductive cycles of this species could be divided into six successive stages; immature stage(September-December), nucleolus stage(January-February), yolk vesicle stage(February-March), vitellogenic stage(March-April), ripe stage(April-July) and spent stage(July-September).
To develop the artificial spawning seaweeds of the sandfish, Arctoscopus japonicus, the effects by the material type of artificial spawning seaweeds were investigated at Dongsan port in Gangwon-do from December 2006 to March 2007. Sargassum fulvellum, S. horneri, rope and net were used as materials for artificial spawning seaweeds, and the most effective thing among them was S. fulvellum. A. japonicus began to attach the egg mass to artificial spawning seaweeds when sea temperature dropped below 10℃ in December, spawned heavily when it was around 8℃ in January, and completed the behavior when it started to increase over 10℃ in February. The hatching period of eggs was estimated to be about 60 days. The middle position in artificial spawning seaweed had the highest number of egg masses and the diameter of the egg mass ranged from 25mm to 62mm. Based on the result for the effects, the artificial spawning seaweeds of A. japonicus were developed and it is possible to use them to form seaweed forests or spawning grounds of other species.
It has been considered that fishing areas for shrimp beam trawl have been in ruin because Korean local governments have permitted trawling into the areas limited by the fisheries local regulations from 1994. Physical and biological effects of the trawling were investigated in the study. Physical effects were investigated by optical methods such as trawling tracking by side scan sonar and comparing the gear both before and after trawling. Biological aspects were investigated by grab sampling of benthic animals, concentration of trace metals in sediment and a flux evaluation of NH4+, PO4-, and SiO2 by coring. The fishing activity had physical impacts on the seabed but these recovered naturally in less than fourty days naturally, which increased the benthic biodiversity, increases the trace metal concentration of and nutrient flux into the seawater, especially phosphate and silicate. This method and these results can help in further studies looking for disturbances by fishing.
The fisheries resources by a set net in the coastal waters off Neungpo, Goeje Island from 2003 to 2004 were studied to determine species composition and catch variation. The main fishing period by a set net were from April to December in 2003 and from May to December in 2004. A total weight of 48 species caught through the survey period was 540,688.0kg. Most of them were 44 species of fishes and a few were 4 species of cephalopods. Dominant species was Trachurus japonicus accounting to 57.5% in total catch. Sub-dominant species were Trichiurus lepturus(12.9%), Engraulis japonicus(10.6%), Scomber japonicus(6.9%), Clupea pallasii(4.5%), Todarodes pacificus(2.8%) and Parapristipoma trilineaturm(1.3%). The remnant species showed a low catch, indicating the catch had less than 1% in total, respectively. T. japonicus and T. lepturus were caught throughout the survey period, but C. pallasii, Gadus macrocephalus, Oncorhynchus keta in low temperature season and Thunnus obesus in high temperature season. The fishing ground temperature was 11.7-24.0℃ in range and the catch by a set net was higher in autumn than in spring and in summer with the variation of fishing ground temperature. The annual catch by a set net was much higher in 2004 than in 2003 due to high temperature(〉17℃) and the recruitment of T. japonicus from offshore seas. Therefore we concluded that the catch of Neungpo fishing ground by a set net was highly related to the variation of T. japonicus catch with fishing ground temperature.
Cast fishing gear needs some time for fishing progress, and catches and their composition by submerged time can change by several cause. Therefore, it is very importance to study fishing capacity of fishing gear by submerged time. This study is to investigate catches and their composition of shrimp trap, that is used in the coastal of the East Sea, and to find the fittest lifting time of trap. Experimental term are September 2006 and August 2007, the location is the coastal of Oho, Goseong, Gangwondo, Korea and one hundred trap is used at each casting and lifting of gear. For convenience of description, survey of 2006 and 2007 are dented as experimental code 1 and 2, and submerged time 21hr, 43hr and 66hr are dented as code A, B and C. The result of obtained from the above approach are summarized as follows: Many Northern shrimps(Pandalus eous), dominated 96.36%, are only catched in experimental code A, and in code B and C, some of coonstripe shrimp(Pandalus hypsinotus) and few morotoge shrimp(Pandalopsis japonica) are catched. CPUE of code 1A, 1B and 1C per trap were 21.67g, 29.51g and 28.48g, and those of code 2A, 2B and 2C per trap were 25.44g, 32.93g and 33.36g. Therefore, 24.66% of catch increased according as submerged time passes from 1 day to 2 days, and almost no change of catch was to be -1.1%. Carapace length of code 1A, 1B and 1C were 23.77mm, 25.00mm and 25.57mm, and those of code 2A, 2B and 2C per trap were 23.83mm, 24.95mm and 25.45mm. Thus, the more submerged time is, the less catch of small fish is and the more catch of large fish is. Consequently, fit lifting time of shrimp trap is after 2 days, and if considered trouble of fishing gear and condition of catch, the fittest lifting time is the third successive day of casting date.
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of temperature on the results of Charpy impact test for glass fiber reinforced polyurethane(GF/PUR) composites. The Charpy impact test were conducted in the temperature range from -50˚ to 50˚. The impact fracture toughness of GF/PUR composites was considerably affected by temperature and it was shown that the maximum value was appeared at room temperature. It is believed that sensitivity of notch on impact fracture energy were increased with decrease in temperature of specimen. As the GF/PUR composites exposed in low temperature, impact fracture toughness of composites decreased gradually owing to the decrease of interface bonding strength caused by difference of thermal expansion coefficient between the glass fiber/polyurethane resin. And decrease of interface bonding strength of composites with decrease in specimen temperature was ascertained by SEM photographs of Charpy impact fracture surface.
This paper describes a automatic video surveillance system(AVSS) with long range and 360˚ coverage that is automatically rotated in an elevation over azimuth mode in response to the TTM(tracked target message) signal of vessels tracked by ARPA(automatic radar plotting aids) radar. This AVSS that is a video security and tracking system supported by ARPA radar, CCTV(closed-circuit television) camera system and other sensors to automatically identify and track, detect the potential dangerous situations such as collision accidents at sea and berthing/deberthing accidents in harbor, can be used in monitoring the illegal fishing vessels in inshore and offshore fishing ground, and in more improving the security and safety of domestic fishing vessels in EEZ(exclusive economic zone) area. The movement of the target vessel chosen by the ARPA radar operator in the AVSS can be automatically tracked by a CCTV camera system interfaced to the ECDIS(electronic chart display and information system) with the special functions such as graphic presentation of CCTV image, camera position, camera azimuth and angle of view on the ENC, automatic and manual controls of pan and tilt angles for CCTV system, and the capability that can replay and record continuously all information of a selected target. The test results showed that the AVSS developed experimentally in this study can be used as an extra navigation aid for the operator on the bridge under the confusing traffic situations, to improve the detection efficiency of small targets in sea clutter, to enhance greatly an operator s ability to identify visually vessels tracked by ARPA radar and to provide a recorded history for reference or evidentiary purposes in EEZ area.
