In this study, the performance of a small - sized wave heat exchanger to be applied to the white smoke reduction system was experimentally confirmed. The heat transfer rate, drain and pressure drop were measured according to the air flow rate, water flow rate and relative humidity change of the wave heat exchanger for two kinds of pitch numbers. A constant temperature and humidity calorimeter and a constant temperature water bath were used to measure the performance of the wave heat exchanger. The heat transfer rate and drain increased gradually with changes of water flow rate. Case 2 showed more than 50% higher heat transfer rate and drain than Case 1. The increase of air heat transfer rate and drain according to air flow rate was greatly increased when the number of pitches was the same or increased, unlike the result of water flow rate change. In the temperature visualization using a thermal imaging camera, it can be seen that as the water flow rate and the number of pitches increase, the heat transfer becomes more effective in Case 2.

Ohmic heating is one of advanced thermal processing techniques which utilize conversion of electrical energy into heat. In our study, a feasibility of ohmic heating was tested to cook instant rice cake to improve energy efficacy as an alternative heating methods of conventional electrical kettle. Ohmic heating was conducted using customized ohmic cell (7.5×4.5×9.5 cm) equipped with titanium electrodes. Instant rice cakes in soup were ohmically heated up to 100°C at different electric fields (9, 12, 15 & 18 V/cm) and temperature holding times (60, 80, 100 & 120 s). Thermocouple was placed into both soup and rice cake to evaluate the temperature profile and energy efficacy. Temperature, voltage and current across the sample were measured and recorded at every 3 s using data acquisition system (DAQ). Mathematical model was developed to calculate the internal energy generation rate (QR, W). Internal energy generation rate (QR, W) was integrated versus temperature come-up time (s) to compute the total internal energy dose (ET, J) using MATLBA software. For energy efficacy (Eff), it was calculated ratio of total internal energy dose (ET, J) to heat quantity (Qh, J). During ohmic heating, temperature come-up time was significantly reduced as a function of elevated electric field (P<0.05). For example, 9V/cm of electric field showed 6.2±0.4 min of temperature come-up time up to 100°C. Higher electric field at 18 V/cm reduced temperature come-up time to 1.9±0.1 min. The electric field of 15 V/cm showed the best energy efficacy as 0.78 which meant 78% of electrical energy was converted into thermal energy for heating. In the texture profile analysis, the most preferable harness was found as 6.191 N at 15 V/cm and 100 s holding time. Our study showed the potential of ohmic heating to cook instant rice cakes for home meal replacement (HMR) and outdoor foods.

Background: Light touch cue is a sensory input that could potentially help in the control of posture. The immediate stimulatory effect of light touch cues using a cane during gait is associated with postural stability. This strategy can help post-stroke individuals regain their ability to perform the sit-to-stand (STS) transfer safely. Objects: The effects of light grip on postural control during the STS transfer in post-stroke subjects were investigated. Methods: Eleven participants (6 men, 5 women) with hemiplegia due to stroke were recruited in the study. The subjects with hemiparesis performed STS transfer in three randomly assigned conditions (1) without a cane (2) light grip with a cane (3) strong grip with a cane. Results: The difference in weight-bearing distribution between the left and right feet, when the subjects were instructed to stand up, was 52.73±2.13% without a cane, 42.75±3.26% with a strong grip, and 43.00±2.55% with a light grip (p<.05). The rate of rise in force indicates the peak power provided by subjects during their STS transfers. The rate of rise in force was statistically significantly lower without a cane than that with a light grip or a strong grip (p<.05). The subjects’ centers of pressure sway on the mediolateral side during STS transfers statistically significantly declined with a light grip or a strong grip when compared to those without a cane (p<.05). Conclusion: When the subjects with hemiparesis used a cane during STS transfers, their duration, center of pressure sway, and difference in weight-bearing distribution were all reduced. The subjects also exhibited similar results during STS transfers with a cane gripped lightly. This result may provide guidelines for the use of assistive devices when patients with hemiparesis practice STS transfers in clinical settings.

Shape optimization is needed to enhance the performance or efficiency of many industrial products, for instance, such as small-scale electric parts, automotive design and so on. In, especially, small-scale apparatus with heat transfer, it is not easy to decide optimal shape of apparatus. Therefore, the shape of power auxiliary apparatus in automotive engine was investigated using numerical analysis which includes k- model and unsteady state. The relations between temperature and heat transfer were simulated in case of 3 Type and 3 Point for power auxiliary apparatus. As the results, the heat transfer was decreased due to flow recirculation in case of Type-1. Further high temperature did not always mean high heat transfer when the shape interacted with surrounding fluid.

In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of pilot wave heat exchanger for white smoke reduction system was investigated. The performance of the wave and honeycomb heat exchanger combined with the first stage, second stage and third stage was tested using a calorimeter. Air and water inlet/outlet temperature and flow rate, pressure drop and dehumidification amount were measured to compare the heat transfer performance according to the type and the combination of heat exchanger. The heat transfer rate and dehumidification amount of the wave heat exchanger were higher than that of the honeycomb heat exchanger, and the pressure drop was low. As the stage increased, the heat transfer rate and the increase of the dehumidification amount were more pronounced, and the pressure drop linearly increased. The wave heat exchanger had a lower flow resistance than the honeycomb heat exchanger with the honeycomb structure and had a higher heat transfer effect due to the convection, so the water outlet temperature was higher in the wave heat exchanger.

In the present study, single-phase heat transfer characteristics for downstream flow in the support grid of 6×6 rod bundle were investigated. It has been known that a turbulence generation due to a support grid with split mixing vanes enhances heat transfer in rod bundle but its heat transfer enhancement actually affects to relatively shorter distance. On the other hand, it has been also turned out that a support grid with large scale vortex flow (LSVF) mixing vanes results in heat transfer enhancement to a longer distance. Based on the results of literatre survey, single-phase water heat transfer experiments were performed for Reynolds numbers at around 30,000, and the heat transfer enhancement effect with both i) the split mixing vanes and ii) the LSVF mixing vanes was compared in this study. The key results showed that the effect of heat transfer enhancement in rod bundle region by the split mixing vanes was maintained up to the length of 15Dh behind the spacer grid. For the Reynolds numbers at around 30,000, it was also observed that the effect using the LSVF mixing vanes was stronger at about 3% when compared to the case using the split mixing vanes only for the distance ranging from 1 to 15Dh behind the spacer grid.

The Joint Load Transfer (LTE) is important for both design and evaluation of concrete pavements. Numerous researches have been published to determine different factors that affect the load transfer efficiency through Finite Element Method (FEM) and field measurements. Most of these researches are using static analysis. Previous study pointed out the weakness of the assumption of this analysis and successfully differentiate the dynamic stress-based LTE with static stress-based LTE through FEM. Usually deflection based LTE(w) is being evaluated in the field through Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD). This test is a dynamic test which typically uses peak displacement and assumed to be static displacement when similar amount of static loading is applied. The calculation of LTE(w) in the field involves the ratio of the peak displacement of unloaded to loaded slab. Using this LTE(w) calculation, there were instances that high values were obtained from spalled joints and joints with wider opening. This study attempts to provide a better characterization of the condition of the joint. A time-based LTE(t) using the time delay were investigated and correlated with the current LTE(w) using a 24 hour measurement of deflection from asphalt and concrete pavement, with a 3-hour interval done in Gimpo International Airport. Wider values of LTE(t) were obtained while the deflection-based LTE(w) shows almost similar values. The time-based LTE(t) shows better relationship with the physical condition of the joint than LTE(w). It shows that LTE(t) can characterized the condition of the joint. This result will be used for further study to improve the measurement of load transfer efficiency of concrete pavement joints

This study was conducted to establish the optimal chemical post-activation conditions in porcine embryonic development after parthenogenesis (PA) and somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) using 4 different chemical compositions (cytochalasin B (CB), cyclohexamide (CHX), demecolcine (DC), 6-dimethylaminopurine (DMAP). Porcine embryos were produced by PA and SCNT and then, cultured for post-activation with CB (7.5 μg/mL), CB (7.5 μg/mL) + CHX (10 μg/mL), CB (7.5 μg/mL) +DC (0.4 μg/mL), and CB (7.5 μg/mL) + DMAP (2 mM). In PA embryonic development, cleavage rates have been significantly higher in CB group (94.7%) and CB+DMAP group (94.1%) than that of CB+CHX and CB+DC group (88.1 and 84.3%, respectively). There have been no significant differences in blastocyst formation rates among the four groups. In cell number of blastocyst was shown in CB group (42.3%) significantly higher than CB+CHX and CB+DC group (40.6 and 40.6%, respectively). In SCNT embryonic development, CB+DMAP group (89.7%) significant differences were found on embryo cleavage rates when compared with other three groups. Blastocyst formation rates in CB+DMAP group (26.9%) were significantly higher when compared with CB, CB+CHX, and CB+DC groups (25.5, 20.2, and 22.1%, respectively). In blastocyst cell number, CB+DMAP group (41.4%) was found higher significant difference compared with other three groups. Additionally, we have investigated survivin expression in early development stages of porcine SCNT embryos for more confirmation. Our results establish that CB group and CB+DMAP group for 4 h during post-activation improves pre-implantation improvement of PA and SCNT embryos.

The Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) method can be applied to various fields such as species conservation, regenerative medicine, farming industries and drug production. However, the efficiency using SCNT is very low for many reasons. One of the troubles of SCNT is that it is highly dependent on the researcher’s competence. For that reason, four somatic cell nuclear injection methods were compared to evaluate the effect of hole-sealing process and existence of cytochalasin B (CB) on efficiency of murine SCNT protocol. As a results, the microinjection with the hole-sealing process, the oocyte plasma membrane is inhaled with injection pipette, in HCZB with CB was presented to be the most efficient for the reconstructed in SCNT process. In addition, we demonstrated that the oocytes manipulated in Hepes-CZB medium (HCZB) with CB does not affect the developmental rate and the morphology of the blastocyst during the pre-implantation stage. For this reason, we suggest the microinjection involving hole-sealing in HCZB with CB could improve SCNT process efficiency.

In most mammals, metaphase II (MII) oocytes having high maturation promoting factor (MPF) activity have been considered as good oocytes and then used for assisted reproductive technologies including somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Caffeine increases MPF activity in mammalian oocytes by inhibiting p34cdc2 phosphorylation. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of caffeine treatment during in Vitro maturation (IVM) on oocyte maturation and embryonic development after SCNT in pigs. To this end, morphologically good (MGCOCs) and poor oocytes (MPCOCs) based on the thickness of cumulus cell layer were untreated or treated with 2.5 mM caffeine during 22-42, 34-42, or 38-42 h of IVM according to the experimental design. Caffeine treatment for 20 h during 22-42 h of IVM significantly inhibited nuclear maturation compared to no treatment. Blastocyst formation of SCNT embryos was not influenced by the caffeine treatment during 38-42 h of IVM in MGCOCs (41.1-42.1%) but was significantly improved in MPCOCs compared to no treatment (43.4 vs. 30.1%, P<0.05). No significant effects of caffeine treatment was observed in embryo cleavage (78.7-88.0%) and mean cell number in blastocyst (38.7-43.5 cells). The MPF activity of MII oocytes in terms of p34cdc2 kinase activity was not influenced by the caffeine treatment in MGCOCs (160.4 vs. 194.3 pg/ml) but significantly increased in MPCOCs (133.9 vs. 204.8 pg/ml). Our results demonstrate that caffeine treatment during 38-42 h of IVM improves developmental competence of SCNT embryos derived from MPCOCs by influencing cytoplasmic maturation including increased MPF activity in IVM oocytes in pigs.

The heat transfer characteristics of forced convection according to the geometric shapes with four rectangular blocks in a horizontal PCB channel was analyzed numerically using SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model. As the boundary condition for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, the inlet temperature and air velocity were respectively 300 K and 3.84 m/s and the heat flux of the block surface was 358 W/㎡. The shape factors of block were width, height, spacing and channel entrance height. As the results, the heat transfer rate was decreased as the width ratio (x/h) was increased, while it was increased as the height ratio (h/x) is increased. Also as the block spacing ratio (s/x) was increased, the heat transfer effects was not significantly affected. And as the channel entrance height ratio (H/x) was increased, the heat transfer performance was decreased.
