        In this study, a 141 BC3F4 lines from across between the O. sativa cv. Milyang23 as there current parent, and O. glaberrima as the donor parent was used to identify favorable QTL alleles from O. glaberrima for yield and yield components. To detect the introgressions, 198 microsatellite markers of known chromosomal position were used for the parental survey. Of the 178 markers, 128 (64.6%) showed polymorphism. Among them, 115 SSR markers were used to construct a genetic linkage map with average interval length of 12.7 cM based on the previous rice molecular genetic map. The mean number of O. glaberrima segments in the population was 1.84 ranging from 0 to 7. The average length of the segments was 16.6 cM and ranged from 0.5 to 232.5 cM. This population consisting of 141 lines was used to evaluate for six traits of agronomic importance and genotypes were determined for 141 BC3F5 using SSR markers. A total of 22 QTLs for 6 traits were detected on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. Phenotypic variance associated with each QTL ranged 9.5% ~ 58.2%. For 26 of the QTLs identified in this study, the O. glaberrima alleles contributed a desirable agronomic effect despite the over all undesirable characteristics of the wild phenotype. Favorable wild alleles were detected for culm length, panicle length, yield, panicles per plant and 1000-grain weight. When compared with previous studies involving interspecific crosses, it can be concluded that O. glaberrima is useful asa source of valuable alleles for rice improvement.         Living modified organisms(LMO) by modern biotechnology has played a highly visible role. But the public concerns relating to the environmental risk of LMO have been raised because of the potential benefits of this new technology. The recently adapted Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety contains an Annex on risk assessment, which specifies in some detail points to consider. All LMO should be evaluated according to their biological properties(phenotypic, genetic, agronomic and ecological characteristics) before release to the environment. To build up the capacity building of risk assessment method for LMO used environmental remediation, we engineered a model plant, Solanum nigrum L. expressing organomercurial lyase gene(merB). MerB transforms methylmercury to less toxic, non-biomagnified ionic mercury. In this report, we compared 8 different phenotypic, agronomic characteristics and rhizosphere microorganisms with control. The difference between transgenic and non-transgenic plant has not found.

        This study was conducted to identify QTLs for some agronomic traits under two different N-fertilizer conditions. A recombinant inbred population (DT-RILs) between Dasanbyeo (a tongil type rice, derived from an indica × japonica cross and similar to indica in its genetic make-up) and TR22183 (a Chinese japonica variety), consisting of 166 F8 lines, was developed and used for mapping. A frame map of 1,409 cM containing 113 SSR and 103 STS markers with an average interval of 6.5 cM between adjacent marker loci was constructed using the DT-RILs. The DT-RILs were cultivated in ordinary N-fertilizer (N-P2O5-K2O=100-80-80 kg/ha) condition and low N-fertilizer (N-P2O5-K2O=50-80-80 kg/ha) condition in order to compare the different N-fertilizer effects. Grain yield was positively correlated with spikelet number in both conditions. Path analysis revealed that spikelet number is the most positive contributor to grain yield. Twenty-nine single QTLs (S-QTLs) and sixty-five pairs of epistatic loci (E-QTLs) were identified for days to heading, culm length, panicle length, panicle number, spikelet number, spikelet fertility, 1000-grains weight and grain yield in both N-fertilizer conditions. The phenotypic variance explained by these S-QTLs and E-QTLs ranged from 8.8% to 61.1% and from 10.0% to 55.6%, respectively. The total phenotypic variance explained by all the QTLs for each trait ranged from 15.4% to 92.3%.

        We performed field trials to assess levels of changes in intrinsic properties and resistance against soft rot of the potato cultivar ‘Irish Cobbler’ upon the introduction of the Shiva-1 gene. Each five lines, transformed with Shiva-1 gene controlled by the PAL5 promoter (P) and by the CaMV 35S promoter (E) were evaluated in the field. In based on evaluation of 10 defined morphological characteristics, all the transgenic clones of both lines proved to be true to type. When five agronomic characteristics were taken into account as well, all the transgenic lines except E8 were considered to be true to type. According to the result of northern blot analysis, seven (P1, P3, P4, P6, E10, E12, and E16) transgenic clones could be distinguished clearly from corresponding untransformed clones. But in three lines (P8, E5, and E8), no hybridization signal was detected. There seems to be positive correlation between the levels of resistance to soft rot and the transgenic expression at mRNA levels in P lines. But in the case of E lines, however, there doesn’t seem to be any correlation between the levels of disease resistance and mRNA expression

        Agronomic characteristics of transgenic herbicide-resistant rice lines were evaluated under field condition. Differences in agronomic traits and rice quality were observed between transgenic plants and the corresponding untransformed controls. Transgenic Ilpumbyeo lines flowered earlier than untransformed controls, whereas transgenic Nagdongbyeo flowered at the same time as untransformed control. With regard to the yield and rice quality, most of the transgenic lines showed lower yield than control except some selected transgenic lines. Selected Nagdongbyeo transgenic line also showed good eating quality comparable to the control although most selected Ilpumbyeo transgenic lines showed slightly lower eating quality and increased white center/belly in the rice grain. In order to find the main factor leading to somaclonal variation among transgenic lines, Tos17, a rice retrotransposon activated by prolonged tissue culture period was investigated. Although the transgenic lines carried only one or two of transformed bar gene, the copy number of Tos17 increased in most transgenic lines compared with control. The activation of Tos17 was not detected in selected promising transgenic lines such as ND115-15-1-B and IP23-3-3, suggesting that the increased copy number of Tos17 may have negatively affected agronomic characteristics of transgenic rice.

        본 시험 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 공시교잡종의 평균 과피두께는 37um 로 얇은 특성을 보였는데 특히 CNU108 교잡종이 30.3um 로 가장 얇은 특성을 보였고 출사일수는 CNU69와 CNU202 등이 59일로 가장 빨랐으나 CNU160 교잡종은 68일로 본 교잡종들 중에서 가장 늦었다. 2. CNU70과 CNU138의 교잡종들은 높은 항산화효소(xanthin oxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase)의 활성을 나타내었고, 특히 CNU160과 CNU193 교잡종은 각각 94.8%, 94.6% 등으로 높은 항산화력(EDA)을 나타내었다. 3. CNU109와 CNU34의 교잡종에서는 전반적으로 높은 항산화효소 활성 및 항산화력을 나타내었다. 따라서 CNU34, CNU70, CNU108, CNU138, CNU193 등의 교잡종 찰옥수수가 항산화 효과가 높은 고기능성 유색 찰옥수수인 것으로 사료되었다.

        본 시험은 사일리지옥수수의 사료가치를 향상을 위한 일환으로 최근 육성된 국내 사일리지옥수수 품종들의 사료가치를 분석하고자 수행하였다. 국내종 옥수수의 파종일에서 출사일까지의 출사일수는 수원19호의 78일에서 수원159호의 86일로 품종간에 8일간 차이가 있었고 수입종인 P3394 보다는 출사일수가 긴 것으로 나타났다. 광평옥, 청안옥, 청사옥은 도복에 강하였으며 후기녹체성은 광안옥, 광평옥, 청안옥, 청사옥, 수원159호 등은 도입종인 P3394 와 같은 수준이었다. 품종간 깨씨무늬병 저항성은 두루옥, 광평옥, 수원159호 등이 강한 것으로 나타났고, 광안옥, 수원19호, 청안옥, 장다옥, 청사옥 등은 도입종인 P3394와 비슷한 경향을 나타내었다. 그을음무늬병과 깜부기병에는 품종간 차이가 없이 강한 것으로 나타났다. 이삭비율은 청안옥이 도입종인 P3394와 같았으며, 국내종의 이삭길이는 P3394와 비슷하거나 긴 것으로 나타났다. 건물수량은 수원19호와 장다옥을 제외한 다른 품종들은 P3394와 비교해 볼 때 비슷한 것으로 나타났다. TDN은 두루옥, 광평옥, 청안옥, 청사옥 등은 P3394와 비슷하였지만 광안옥, 수원19호, 장다옥, 및 수원159호 등은 P3394 보다 낮았다. ADF는 수원159호가 가장 낮았으며, 그 외 품종들은 44.7~49.0% 로 도입종인 P3394와 비슷하였다. NDF는 두루옥이 가장 낮았으며, 두루옥을 제외한 품종들은 68.1~72.8% 로 P3394와 비슷하였다. RFV는 두루옥, 광평옥, 청안옥, 장다옥, 수원159호 등이 71.0~75.7 로 도입종인 P3394 의 70.5보다 높게 나타났으나 평균간 차이는 없었다. ADF는 출사일수, 성숙일수, 생체수량과는 유의한 부의 상관을 보였고, 조명나방의 피해율과는 유의한 정의 상관관계를 보였으며, 후기녹체성, 건물수량, TDN수량, 종실수량과는 상관이 거의 없었다. RFV는 성숙일수와 생체수량과는 유의한 정의 상관을 보였고, 조명 나방과는 유의한 부의 상관을 보였으며, 후기녹체성, TDN수량, 종실수량과는 상관이 거의 없었다.
