        In order to verify the quality characteristics of soybean milk added chickpeas, the following characteristics were investigated: pH, solid contents, color, DPPH radical scavenging, as well as electric nose and sensory evaluation. Physicochemical and the sensory characteristics were analyzed based on the experimental data. The pH value was different in the control and the treatments (p<0.005). As the quantity of chickpea content increased, the solid content was augmented (p<0.0001). The L value was 56.86 in the control, and with the amount of chickpea addition increasing, the L value increased to 57.43 in 100% chickpea soybean milk (p<0.0001). The a value and b value also increased significantly (p<0.0001). However, the DPPH radical scavenging in the control was the lowest but the antioxidant activity of 100% chickpea milk was more than 2.5 higher than that of the control (p<0.0001). In the electric nose experiment, the flavor component of 20%, 30% and 100% chickpea treatment showed a significant difference compared to the control in the flavor components. In the sensory evaluation, for the score of flavor (p<0.001) and taste (p<0.0001), the score was higher in the treatments where 20% and 30% of chickpeas were added. In the sensory test of texture, there was no significant difference in the different experimental conditions except for the 100% chickpea addition treatment. In the overall acceptability test, the scores of 20% and 30% chickpea treatment were the highest results, compared to other treatments (p<0.0001). According to the correlation analysis, both antioxidant activity (0.797) and solid content (0.834) had shown high correlation to pH among the physiochemical characteristics (p<0.01). In the sensory evaluation, color, flavor, taste, texture and overall acceptability had shown a positive correlation to the amount of the soy bean milk added chickpea (p<0.01). In particular, the overall acceptability had shown the highest correlation to the taste (0.803), and it was the texture which resulted in the next highest correlation for overall acceptability (0.666).

        We reported a new white soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera sojae in 2016. This species is closely related to H. glycineswhich has the same host plant. Morphological observations of the cyst, female, male and second-stage juveniles indicatedthat this species is differed from those of H. glycines. Cysts of H. sojae appeared more round, shining and darker thanthat of H. glycines. The distribution of this new cyst nematode in soybean field in Korea is unknown yet. In 2016, 270soil samples were collected from soybean fields and examined the existence of H. glycines and H. sojae. Total of 111samples (41.1%) contained cysts. Among them 77% were H. glycines and 23% were H. sojae. Our results suggest thatextensive researches are required for white soybean cyst nematode.

        Plant-parasitic nematodes causes yield losses of more than $100 million per year in the world. Among them, soybeancyst nematode (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) causes the greatest yield loss to soybean compared to any other pest worldwide.SCN causes yield reductions by feeding on plant nutrients, retarding root growth and inhibiting Bradyrhizobium japonicum(Kirchner) Buchanan nodulation. The primary methods for controlling SCN include planting resistant cultivars and rotationwith nonhost crop. In order to control SCN, we should be breeding resistant soybean cultivars which has resistant genefor this pest. The research that can minimize the damage of the soybean yield is still insufficient, comprehensive andsystematic research is urgently required. Current researches in our lab are discussed.

        Insects are attracting the attention of alternative sources of protein. In order to produce high quality insects, studieson the development of safe and nutritious feed sources are needed. Given the cost of rearing insects, agricultural andindustrial by-products were good materials of insect feed. In the current study, Citrus unshiu peel (CP), soybean curdcake (SCC), soybean oil meal (SOM), and brewers dried grain (BDG) were investigated for their effects on larval growthand development of Protaetia brevitarsis. Interestingly, larvae fed on 10% SCC increased their weight by 3.5 times. Forthe larval period, they were significantly shorter than the control. Furthermore, minerals and amino acids were recordedto be high in them. The heavy metals were not detected in any of the investigated groups. These findings provided ascientific basis for the utilization of soybean curd cake as a nutritional feed source to promote larval growth and producequality insects.

        This study was conducted to examine the effect of corn (Zea mays L.) - soybean (Glycine max L.) silage prepared by intercropping method on the nutritive value of the silage, in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics, dry matter degradability, as well as milk yield and milk composition of dairy cows. In a couple of experiments intercropped corn-soybean silage (CSBS) was compared with corn silage (CS) and/or Italian ryegrass hay (IRG). Numerically, CSBS had higher crude protein, ether extract, and lactic acid contents compared to CS. In vitro rumen fermentation analysis demonstrated that up to a 24-h incubation period, both CS and CSBS showed higher total gas production, ammonia N concentration, and dry matter degradability compared to IRG (p<0.05). The investigation on animals was conducted in a commercial dairy farm located in Gyeongju, South Korea, employing 42 Holstein cows that were divided into 2 group treatments: CS and CSBS in a completely randomized design. Although no significant difference was observed in milk yield, animals fed on CSBS showed significantly higher milk protein (p<0.05) and milk fat content (p<0.01), compared to animals fed on CS. Taken together, our findings indicate that corn-soybean silage that is cultivated, harvested, and prepared through intercropping can improve the protein content of the silage, and can also enhance in vitro rumen fermentation, dry matter degradability, and performance of dairy cattle.

        청국장추출물과 청국장의 주요한 플라보노이드의 하나인 genistein의 HepG2 세포에서 Trp-P-1 유도 세포독성과 DNA손상에 대한 보호효과를 평가하였다. 청국장추출물과 주요 플라보노이드성분 genistein은 Trp-P-1 유도 세포독성에 대하여 세포독성보호효과를 나타내었다. 청국장추출물 은 Trp-P-1 유도 DNA single strand breaks를 억제하였다. 한편, 청국장추출물은 HepG2 세포에서 Trp-P-1 유도에 의한 CYP1A1와 CYP1A2 발현의 억제를 나타내었다. 청국 장추출물과 genistein은 Trp-P-1에 의한 유도 세포독성과 DNA손상에 대하여 CYP1A1, CYP1A2 발현억제에 의하 여 보호효과가 나타나는 것으로 판단된다. 한국의 전통 콩 발효식품인 청국장은 게놈 불안정성(genomic instability)을 일으키는 heterocyclic amines (HCAs)과 같은 식품의 가열 조리로부터 올 수 있는 발암물질에 대한 유전독성을 예방할 수 있는 유망한 기능성물질로서 활용가능성이 있을 것으로 판단된다.

        This experiment was conducted to evaluate feed value and usability of soybean varieties as livestock forage. In this study, three soybean cultivars, OT93-26, Geomjeongsaeol, and Pungwon, were harvested at R5 (beginning seed development)- and R6 (full seed)-reproductive stages for analyzing feed value of soybean. Days to R5 stage harvest of OT93-26 among the three soybean cultivars was 55 days and the shortest while Pungwon took 103 days to reach at R6 stage. The R6-harvested soybeans had higher dry matter (DM) yields and crude protein (CP) content than the R5-harvested. However, both DM and CP were the highest in the R6-harvested Geomjeongsaeol. Contents of neutral detergent fiber (nDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) of Pungwon harvested at R5 were the highest whereas the R6-harvested Geomjeongsaeol had the lowest. Digestible dry matter (DDM), dry matter intake (DMI), and relative feed value (RFV) of the R6-harvested Geomjeongsaeol and Pungwon were higher than those of the R5-harvested, but in case of OT93-26, those at R6 stage were low rather than those at R5 stage. However, soybean could be used as alternative forage with high feed value for livestock. Taken together, Geomjeongsaeol could be used for developing new forage soybean varieties with high feed value, and R6 would be the optimum harvesting stage for yield and quality of forage soybean.

        The aim of this study was to evaluate different herbicides in corn-soybean intercropping for optimum growth, yield and nutritive value of forage under Korean environment conditions. Herbicidal treatments were randomly applied over five plots, viz. (1) Control treatment: no herbicide; (2) Alachlor; (3) Simazine; (4) Pendimethalin and (5) Mixture of alachlor and simazine herbicides in RCBD have three replications. Results depicted that treated herbicides exhibited significant effect over control of weeds. Simazine herbicide alone or mixed with alachlor had adverse effects on soybean but enhanced (p<0.05) corn production in terms of survivability, dry matter and digestible nutrients yield. Corn-soybean coupling and total dry matter yield were greater (p<0.05) in pendimethalin. Simazine-alachlor mixture reduced (p<0.05) soybean height. Conclusively, simazine could not be suitable for corn soybean intercropping because of having an adverse effect on soybean component. Pendimethalin could maintain growth and yield of corn and soybean both components. Effect of alachlor was comparable to that of pendimethalin.

        Corn is basal forage for livestock species in Republic of Korea but it lacks protein and needs nitrogenous fertilizer. This study was designed with main objective to achieve optimum growth, yield & nutritive value of forage for livestock through implementing corn-soybean intercropping strategy at 17 different places under Korean condition. Two treatments; corn as monocrop (control treatment) and corn-soybean intercrop were compared under Randomized Block Design from 28th May to 8th October, 2015. Each treatment had three replicates in each block, whereas seventeen different places were considered as blocks. Data were analyzed through SAS-9.1.3 software. Difference between two treatment means was tested through T-test. Findings depicted that intercropping pattern could not influence (P>0.05) corn plant & ear height, corn lodged stalk No. and corn stalks number. However, corn-soybean intercropping enhanced (P<0.05) forage productivity in terms of total fresh yield (16.4±0.7b vs. 19.9±0.7a tons ha-1), total dry matter yield (5.38±0.25b vs. 6.41±0.31a tons ha-1) and total digestible nutrients yield (3.94±0.17b vs. 4.59±0.21a tons ha-1). Dry matter percentage in corn stalks and corn ears was not different (P>0.05) between two treatments. It was concluded that corn-soybean intercropping strategy was promising technique in enhancing forage productivity though positive symbiotic relation between two crops.

        Negative effects of insecticides on non-target organism can be reduced by using selective and less toxic insecticides. We assessed the effect of subsequent application of flonicamid and Beauveria bassiana GHA on pests and natural enemies in soybean fields by recording their density in 6-8 d interval. Flonicamid controlled Aphis glycines Matsumura in 6 day after spray (DAS). Nymphs of Riptortus pedestris (F.) were also reduced by 46 and 48% in 12 and 19 DAS, respectively. Application of B. bassiana reduced R. pedestris nymph 50% in 16 DAS whereas adult R. pedestris, Medythia nigrobilineata Motschulsky and A. glycines were not significantly reduced in treated fields. Ladybird beetles, syrphid flies, hymenopteran wasps, and parasitism rate of R. pedestris eggs were not different between the treatment and control. These results suggest that flonicamid and B. bassiana showed less negative effect on the natural enemies and effective against aphids and nymphs stage of R. pedestris.

        In attempt to avoid crop damage through wild bird’s picking, this study was designed with aim to evaluate several pre-sowing soybean seed coatings for optimum yield in corn-soybean mixed forage. It was investigated under four cropping treatments, viz. 1) corn sole, 2) corn mixed with soybean without any coating, 3) corn with iron coated soybean and 4) corn with thiram coated soybean. Each treatment had three replicates and corn sole was control treatment. Pioneer (P1184) and crossbred (PI483463 × Hutcheson) seeds were used for corn and soybean, respectively. The trial was conducted under randomized block design from 5th June to 23rd September, 2015. Data were an alyzed through ANOVA technique using SAS9.1.3 software. Results depicted that survivability of soybean against wild birds damage was found better (p<0.05) in thiram coating which was higher than iron coating and control treatment but later on thiram coating had adverse effects on subsequent growth of soybean plants. Corn stalk height was decreased (p<0.05) in thiram coating, whereas corn ear height was reduced in iron coating treatment. Iron coating enhanced (p<0.05) height of soybean plant (p<0.05) better than that of thiram coating. Soybean seed coatings didn’t influence dry matter yield and nutritive value in terms of total digestible nutrients yield in corn soybean mixed forage. Conclusively, although presowing thiram coating enhanced survivability of soybean plants against wild bird damage but had adverse effects on its subsequent growth. However, soybean seed coatings didn’t influence yield and nutritive value of corn soybean intercropping forage

        The objective of this study is to assess immunomodulatory effects of mixed Weissella (W.) cibaria JW15 strain with water extract of black soybean (Glycine max) and burdock (Arctium lappa) on Listeria (L.) monocytogenes infection in mice. Female 7-9 week old BALB/c mice were given a daily dose of 1 × 109 CFU of viable JW15 and JW15 mixed with black soybean (BS) and burdock (BD) in 200 μL PBS for 2 weeks. The nomal control group (NC) and positive control group (PC) were given 200 μL PBS. After 2 weeks, mice were infected with L. monocytogenes (1.0 × 105 CFU/mouse) via the tail vein. The NC was injected with 100 μL PBS without L. monocytogenes. After 2 days, mice were euthanized and their body weights were determined. In addition, their livers and spleens were weighed, and serum were analyzed for cytokine (Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)) production. The survival rate was monitored using 5 mice in each group in the same way above until the mice died. Two days after infection with L. monocytogenes, mean spleen weight per body weight (g/kg) of JW15 (5.4 ± 0.88 g/kg), JW15 + BS (6.0 ± 0.64 g/kg), and JW15 + BD (5.3 ± 0.38 g/kg) group were significantly lower than that of the PC (6.8 ± 0.57 g/kg). The level of IL-1β in the serum of JW15 + BD (113.6 ± 31.03 pg/mL) was significantly higher than that of the JW15 (67.9 ± 15.15 pg/mL). Collectively, combination W. cibaria JW15 and water extract of BD and BD have ability to induce synergistic immunomodulative effects and are suitable for consideration as a functional food for humans and functional feed additives for companion animals.

        As economic growth has occurred in Asia over the last several decades, the demand for soybeans, soybean meal and soyoil have also increased. Over the last 50 years, the cultivation of soybeans in the U.S., Brazil, and Argentina increased dramatically. Consequently, these three countries have become the major soybean producers and exporters in the world. The growth in soybean production in those countries over the years, however, has been insufficient to meet the demand. With the opening of China’s market to soybean and soybean products trade in 1995/96 and the accession of China to that trade agreement in 2001, Asian soybean imports began to increase dramatically. Korea opened its soyoil market in 1991 and it brought about a great change not only in soyoil market but in soymeal and soybean market as well. As imports of soyoil expanded, the increased consumption was covered by imports and this caused burden cost to soybean manufacturers leading to decrease in soybean purchase. Since that time, consumption of Korean soybeans has become stagnant and due to this reason, production of soymeal, which is byproduct of soybeans, also decreased replacing increased domestic consumption with imported soymeal. This implies that market openness of soyoil, has brought negative effect in soybean and soymeal market. As a result, decrease in soybean consumption led to decrease in self-sufficiency of soybean products.

        The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock and Food in Korea has done an R&D project to develop new corn and soybean varieties and cultivation technologies with Seoul National University and on-site company for three years in Russia, where Korean government has done the overseas’ agriculture for more than a decade. The objective of this study is to analyze the investment value of three years’ funding. For this, a Cost-Benefit and Scenario analysis approaches were used. The results revealed that 1) For the case of soybean, cost seems to outweigh benefits under a pessimistic scenario, but otherwise in case of neutral and optimistic scenarios. 2) The result of corn shows high economic efficiency for all scenarios. 3) The most important implication of this study is that Korea’s oversea agriculture R&D projects need to expand to different countries, regions, and crops.

        Recently, remote sensing technology as a nondestructive method has been utilized to detectthe quantity and quality of crops using unmanned aerial system. To predict vegetation growth(leaf dry mass and nitrogen content) of soybean, two vegetation index(NDVI and Green NDVI)were calculated from images acquired by multi-spectral camera mounted on a UAV and eachprediction models between vegetation growth and index were evaluated. As a result, there wasno significant difference between vegetation growth and index when each vegetation stage foreach yellow and black bean were compared to each other. However, there was significantdifference between vegetation growth and index when all vegetation stage for each yellow andblack bean were compared to each other. Moreover, there was significant difference betweenvegetation growth and NDVI(r= 0.799 for leaf dry mass, r= 0.796 for nitrogen content), andGreen NDVI(r= 0.860 for leaf dry mass, r= 0.845 for nitrogen content) for all vegetation stageswith all soybeans. The accuracy and precision of Green NDVI model(R2= 0.740 for leaf drymass, R2= 0.714 for nitrogen content) were better than those of NDVI model regardless ofvarieties and vegetation growth. Therefore, Green NDVI has considerable potential to detect thequantity and quality of soybeans.

        This study was investigated the difference in the quality characteristics of the fermented soybean roasted with different conditions for making chungyukjang. Roasted condition of soybean was decided by pre-test, which was on 140oC for 21 min, 180oC 9.5 min, and 220oC 6 min. Fermented soybean with different roasted condition and conventionally made cheonggukjang were measured for proximate composition, color, pH, amino nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, free sugar and amino acids. The lightness and yellowness of soybean fermented by conventional method was higher than those of the fermented soybean with roasted soybean. The contents of free sugar of fermented soybean roasted on 220oC for 6 min (FS220) was the highest among the group and followed by fermented soybean roasted on 180oC for 9.5 min (FS180), 140oC 21 min (FS140) and conventional cheonggukjang (FS0). The contents of total free amino acid was highest on fermented soybean roasted on 140oC for 21 min (FS140) and followed by fermented soybean roasted on 180oC for 9.5 min (FS180), 220oC 6 min (FS220) and conventional cheonggukjang (FS0).

        This study was performed to select the high-yield soybean cultivar suitable for the mid part of Korea and to provide as a basic data for improving productivity of the farmhouse. To this, Daewon as a control and four soybean cultivars such as Uram, Taeseon, Saegeum and Seonpung soybean seeds known that high-yield varieties developed after 2010 were selected. Growth characteristics and functional isoflavone contents of five soybeans were field tested at the field in Goesan, Chungbuk during 2014 and 2015. In comparison with Daewon, maturity date was recorded the earliest at Taesun with 15th Oct. Height of the first pod for the mechanical harvesting have a benefit to Uram (16.8 cm) and Taeseon (14.6 cm), however; shattering percentage of Taeseon were showed the high value of 11.2%. Productivity of Uram, Seonpung and Taesun were increased with 20, 9, and 5 %, respectively, compare to that of Daewon. Total isoflavones contents (μg/g) of five soybeans were ordered as Saegeum (1222.2) > Uram (1111.9) > Seonpung (897.2) > Daewon (885.8) > Taesun (829.5). Total isoflavones contents when soil mulching compare to the non-mulching were increased 206.6 μg/g at Daewon and 460.8 μg/g at Uram soybean.

        본 연구는 생물전환된 대두의 isoflavone 함량, 총 페놀함량, 항산화능(DPP radical 소거능, ORAC 지수) 및 β-Glucan 함량을 측정하였다. Isoflavone의 경우 추출용매에 상관없이 배당체가 모두 비배당체로 전환되는 것을 확인하였다. Total isoflavone 함량의 경우 hexane 탈지 대두박발효물에서 2577.96 μg/mL으로 가장 높은 값을 나타냈으며, ethanol 탈지 대두박 비발효물에서 428.27 μg/mL으로 가장 낮은 값을 나타내었다. 총 페놀 함량은 대두 원물에서 39.44 mg GAE/g으로 나타났으며, ethanol 탈지 대두박비발효물 및 hexane 탈지 대두박 비발효물은 27.07, 27.75 mg GAE/g으로 대두 원물보다 다소 낮은 값을 나타냈다. 생물전환된 대두의 총 페놀 함량은 hexane 탈지 대두박발효물 41.61 mg GAE/g, ethanol 탈지 대두박 발효물42.34 mg GAE/g으로 비발효물에 비해 약 1.5배 가량 증가된 함량을 보였다. DPPH radical 소거능의 경우 대두 원물에서 51.10%의 소거능을 나타내었고 hexane 탈지 대두박 비발효물에서 50.51%, ethanol 탈지 대두박 비발효물은 43.27%의 소거능을 나타냈다. 생물전환된 ethanol 탈지 대두박 발효물에서 59.92%로 radical 소거능이 증가되었지만 hexane 탈지 대두박 발효물은 31.30%로 비발효물에 비해 낮은 radical 소거활성을 보였다. ORAC 지수는 대두 원물이 384.47 μM TE/g을 보였으며, hexane 탈지 대두박 비발효물 및 ethanol 탈지 대두박 비발효물은 318.52, 247.48 μM TE/g으로 나타났다. 생물전환된 hexane 탈지 대두박 발효물은 786.36 μM TE/g, ethanol 탈지 대두박 발효물에서 721.96 μM TE/g으로 비발효물에 비해 ORAC 지수가 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. β-Glucan 함량은 0.09~0.11%의 범위로 나타났으며 대두 원물과 ethanol 탈지 대두박 발효물에서 가장 높은 0.11%를 보였고 hexane 탈지 대두박 비발효물과 hexane 탈지 대두박 발효물에서 0.09%로 가장 낮은 β-glucan 함량을 보였지만, 추출용매 및 생물전환에 따른 β-glucan 함량의 큰 차이는 나타나지 않았다.

        본 연구에서 개발된 자동천공기는 콩의 재식밀도를 고려한 비닐 천공능력이 작업주행속도 0.18- 0.28m/s 조건에서 콩의 주간거리 0.20m, 0.25m, 0.30m에 대해 각각 320-500m2/h, 260-400m2/h, 210-330m2/h의 범위로 나타났다. 천공율은 칼날과 지면간 30mm 거리에서 비닐이 100% 천공되었으 며, 50mm 거리에서 원형칼날 16.7-25.2%, 사각칼날 33.0-42.3%, 육각칼날 54.5-100.0% 범위에서 천공되었다. 또한, 육각칼날 60°에서 비닐 절단면이 매끄럽고 부드러워 절단품질이 가장 우수하였다.

        Lipoxygenase(LOX) 결핍 콩(05C4 및 LS, LOX2,3-free)과 일반콩(태광, LOX1,2,3-present)으로 제조된 된장의 급이가 고지방-콜레스테롤 식이성 흰쥐의 체내 지질성분 및 항산화 효소계에 미치는 영 향을 알아보고자 하였다. SD계 흰쥐는 정상군, 고지방-콜레스테롤 급이군(HFC), 고지방-콜레스테롤 식이+5% 된장 분말 급이군[HFC+D1, 태광된장; HFC+D2, 05C4된장; HFC+D3, LS된장)으로 구분하여 5주간 사육되었다. In vitro에서 된장의 콜레스테롤 흡착활성은 4mg/mL 농도에서 LS된장이 태광된장 에 비해 1.5배 높았다. 식이효율은 정상군에 비해 대조군에서 유의적으로 높았으며, LS된장 급이군 (HFC+D3)은 대조군에 비해 유의적으로 감소되는 경향이었다. Rö hrer 및 T.M.지수와 체지방 함량은 대조군에 비해 된장 급이군에서 모두 유의적으로 감소되었으며, 특히 Lee지수 및 BMI는 LOX 결핍콩 된장 급이군에서 유의적으로 감소되었다. 혈청 총 지질 및 중성지방 함량은 대조군에 비해 된장 급이군 에서 유의적으로 감소되었으나, 총 콜레스테롤, HDL-, LDL-콜레스테롤 및 심혈관질환 위험지수는 LS 된장 급이군만 유의적인 감소를 보였다. 혈청 AST 및 ALT 활성은 HFC+D1 및 HFC+D2간에는 유의차 가 없었고, HFC+D3은 HFC+D1 및 HFC+D2에 비해 유의적으로 낮은 수준이었다. 간 조직에서 총 지 질 함량은 HFC+D3이 대조군에 비해 약 25.2%의 감소되었으며(p<0.05), 중성지방 및 총 콜레스테롤 함량은 HFC+D2 및 HFC+D3이 대조군에 비해 유의적인 감소를 보였다. 분변 중의 중성지방 함량은 된 장 급이군 모두 대조군에 비해 26.2~40.3%의 증가를 보였으며(p<0.05), 총 콜레스테롤 함량은 LS된장 급이군만 유의적으로 증가하였다. 간 조직 중 SOD 활성은 대조군에 비해 05C4 및 LS된장 급이군에서 유의적으로 증가하였으며, catalase 및 GSH-px 활성은 된장 급이군 모두 대조군에 비해 유의적으로 증가하였다. UDPGT 활성은 된장의 급이 시 정상군과 유사한 수준으로 증가되었으며, 특히 LS된장 급 이군은 정상군에 비해 유의적으로 증가하였다. 따라서 LOX 결핍 콩으로 제조된 된장은 체내 지질 개선 및 항비만 활성에 긍정적인 도움이 될 것으로 판단된다.
