Inconel 718 alloy has excellent mechanical properties at room temperature, high temperature and cryogenic conditions. UTS of base metal is about 900MPa at room temperature; this is increased up to 1300MPa after heat treatment & aging-hardening. Mechanical properties of Inconel 718 Alloy were similar to those shown in the the results for tensile test; mechanical properties of Inconel 718 alloy's GTAW were similar to those of base metal's properties at room temperature. Mechanical properties at cryogenic conditions were better than those at room temperature. Heat-treated Inconel 718, non- filler metal GTAW on Inconel 718 and GTAW used filler metal on Inconel 718's UTS was 1400MPa at cryogenic condition. As a result, the excellent mechanical properties of Inconel 718 alloy under cryogenic conditions was proved through tensile tests under cryogenic conditions. In addition, weldability of Inconel 718 alloy under cryogenic conditions was superior to that of its base-metal. In this case, UTS of hybrid joint (IS-G) at -100˚C was 900MPa. Consequently, UTS of Inconel 718 alloy is estimated to increase from -100˚C to a specific temperature below -100˚C. Therefore, Inconel 718 alloy is considered a pertinent material for the production of Lox Pipe under cryogenic conditions.

Diamond/SiC composites are appropriate candidate materials for heat conduction as well as high temperature abrasive materials because they do not form liquid phase at high temperature. Diamond/SiC composite consists of diamond particles embedded in a SiC binding matrix. SiC is a hard material with strong covalent bonds having similar structure and thermal expansion with diamond. Interfacial reaction plays an important role in diamond/SiC composites. Diamond/SiC composites were fabricated by high temperature and high pressure (HPHT) sintering with different diamond content, single diamond particle size and bi-modal diamond particle size, and also the effects of composition of diamond and silicon on microstructure, mechanical properties and thermal properties of diamond/SiC composite were investigated. The critical factors influencing the dynamics of reaction between diamond and silicon, such as graphitization process and phase composition, were characterized. Key factor to enhance mechanical and thermal properties of diamond/SiC composites is to keep strong interfacial bonding at diamond/SiC composites and homogeneous dispersion of diamond particles in SiC matrix.

A Si-CuO-graphite composite was prepared by a mechanical alloying (MA) method. The Si-CuO composite has a mixture structure, where CuO is homogeneously dispersed in Si. Also, and phases were formed during MA and heat treatment. Graphite with the Si-CuO composite was mixed in the same mill for 30 minutes with weight ratio of Si-CuO composite and graphite as 1:1. The Si-CuO composite was homogeneously covered with graphite. SiC phase was not formed. Electrochemical tests of the composite have been investigated, and the first charge and discharge capacities of the material were about 870mAh/g and 660mAh/g, respectively. Those values are about 76% of the first cycle efficiency. The cycle life of the composite showed that the initial discharge capacity of 660 mAh/g could be maintained up to 92% after 20 cycles.

This study is deal with the high frequency induction hardening (HF at 850℃, 120kHz & 50kW condition) SM45C steel. (1) The HF specimen which was tempered at 150℃, did not appear any tempering effect. A brittle fracture occurred at rounded area of the tensile specimen. AE amplitude distribution showed between 45~60dB. (2) The HF specimen which was tempered at 300℃, slip and fracture occurred at the hole area of the tensile specimen. As it passes the yield point, the AE energy increased intermittently and AE amplitude distribution showed between 70~85dB. In addition, after the maximum tensile load, it showed high amplitude and energy distribution. The AE amplitude showed between 45~70dB. (3) The HF specimen which was tempered at 450℃, a brittle fracture occurred as if it is torn in the direction of 45℃ on parallel area over the both sides of the tensile specimen, which led to several peak to be appeared in AE energy. It was found that the AE amplitude was relatively low and the AE energy was high.

A composite of rapidly solidified Al-6061 alloy powder with graphite particle reinforcements was prepared by ball milling and subsequent hot extrusion. The microstructure and mechanical properties of these composites were investigated as a function of milling time. With increasing milling time, the gas atomized initially and spherical powders became elongated with a maximum aspect ratio after milling for 30 h. Then, refinement and spheroidization were achieved by further milling to 70 h with a homogeneous and fine dispersion of graphite particles forming between the matrix alloy layers. The best compression and wear properties were obtained in the powder milled for 70 h, associated with the increased fine and homogeneous distribution of graphite particles in the aluminum alloy matrix.

Since the 1990s, the second generation of Zirconium alloys containing main alloy compositions of Nb, Sn and Fe have been used as a replacement of Zircaloy-4 (Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr), a first-generation Zirconium alloy, to meet severe and rigorous reactor operating conditions characterized by high-burn-up, high-power and high-pH operations. In this study, the mechanical properties and creep behaviors of Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr and Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloys were investigated in a temperature range of 450~500˚C and in a stress range of 80~150 MPa. The mechanical testing results indicate that the yield and tensile strengths of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy are slightly higher compared to those of Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr. This can be explained by the second phase strengthening of the β-Nb precipitates. The creep test results indicate that the stress exponent for the steady-state creep rate decreases with the increase in the applied stress. However, the stress exponent of the Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr alloy is lower than that of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy in a relatively high stress range, whereas the creep activation energy of the former is slightly higher than that of the latter. This can be explained by the dynamic deformation aging effect caused by the interaction of dislocations with Sn substitutional atoms. A higher Sn content leads to a lower stress exponent value and higher creep activation energy.

ZnS- composite is normally used for sputtering target. In recent years, high sputtering power for higher deposition rate often causes crack formation of the target. Therefore the target material is required that the sintered target material should have high crack resistance, excellent strength and a homogeneous microstructure with high sintered density. In this study, raw ZnS and ZnS- powders prepared by a 3-D mixer or high energy ball-milling were successfully densified by spark plasma sintering, the effective densification method of hard-to-sinter materials in a short time. After sintering, the fracture toughness was measured by the indentation fracture (IF) method. Due to the effect of crack deflection by the residual stress occurred by the second phase of fine , the hardness and fracture toughness reached to 3.031 GPa and , respectively

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment was performed on cast Mg-6 wt%Al alloy solution-treated at 693K for 16h and aged at 498K. The surface roughness, thickness, micro-hardness, wear and corrosion properties of coatings on solution-treated and aged Mg-6 wt%Al alloy were investigated. The coatings on aged Mg-6 wt%Al alloy had thinner layer and lower micro-hardness and wear resistance than the solution-treated Mg-6 wt%Al alloy. As the aging time increased, the thickness of coatings decreased while the surface roughness was almost no changed. In addition, the micro-hardness and wear property of coatings decreased with increasing the aging time unlike the uncoated Mg-6 wt%Al alloy showing the peak micro-hardness and the best wear property after aging for 16 h. However, the coatings on Mg-6 wt%Al alloy peak-aged for 16h revealed the best corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl solution, which was explained based on the microstructural characteristics.

The sintering behavior and mechanical property of Mo nanopowder was investigated as a function of various sintering condition. Mo oxide nanopowders were milled using a high energy ball-milling process. After the ball milling for 20h, the crystalline size of was about 20 nm. The nanopowders were reduced at the temperature of without holding time in atmosphere. The sinterability of Mo nanopowder and commercial Mo powder was investigated by dilatometric analysis. Mo nanopowder and commercial Mo powder were sintered at for 1 hand for 3 h, respectively. In both specimens the measured relative density was about 95%. But the measured hardness values were 2.34 GPa for nanopowder and 1.87 GPa for commercial powder. Probably due to finer grain size of the sintered body prepared from Mo nanopowder than that prepared using commercial Mo powder. The mean grain sizes were measured to be about 1.4 mm and 6.2 mm, respectively.

P/M high speed steel (1.26% C, 4.42% Cr, 6.54% W, 4.92% Mo, 3.21 % V, 8.77% Co, bal. Fe) was applied to hot former die. It showed that the die life became 2.7 times higher than that of cast/wrought SKH 55 tool steel which is commercially used. The increase of die life was corresponding to the improved hardness and transverse rupture strength of PM high speed steel due to the finer grain and carbide as well as the uniform carbide distribution. The P/M high speed steel with the promoted die life could be an alternative to the conventional SKH55.

The microstructural and mechanical properties of Al-Si alloyed powder, prepared by gas atomization fallowed by hot extrusion, were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopies, hardness and wear testing. The gas atomized Al-Si alloy powder exhibited uniformly dispersed Si particles with particle size ranging from 5 to . The hot extruded Al-Si alloy shows the average Si particle size of less than . After heat-treatment, the average particle size was increased from 2 to . Also, mechanical properties of extruded Al-Si alloy powder were analyzed before and after heat-treatment. As expected from the microstructural analysis, the heat-treated samples resulted in a decrease in the hardness and wear resistance due to Si particle growth. The friction coefficient of heat-treated Al-Si alloyed powder showed higher value tough all sliding speed. This behavior would be due to abrasive wear mechanism. As sliding speed increases, friction coefficient and depth and width of wear track increase. No significant changes occurred in the wear track shape with increased sliding speed.
