        The role of the women divers (Haenyo and their unique meeting place (Buleok)of peace to solve disputes is another feature of Jeju Peace Island that recommends it as a locus for peace action. Sammu speaks of neighbourly-ness, although the concept itself refers to three elements lacking on Jeju: The Thief, the Gate and the Beggar. Going deep into the peasant past, Jeju islanders held virtues ``diligence, thrift and interdependence”. This meant that no one was moved to become a thief, there was no need for a secure Gate and, so, the Beggar was not found either. Jeju Islander society and culture was without avarice and promoted values of independence, self-reliance and honor. Entry to a traditional Jeju compound was barred by a Jeongnang or log that showed that the homeowner was away and, so, no one crossed the threshold out of respect. All of this may sound rather negative and stern were it not for Samryeo, the “Three Treasures” in the developing heritage of Jeju peace culture, taken to be Nature (folklore, native industries), Crops of special use, such as marine products and, today, tourism; finished off with Generosity of the beauty of nature, including controls on the level of industry so as to preserve the natural blessings. Whilst in keeping with the three-part philosophy of ancient Jeju, Samryeo is a development from 1960 and more recent times, as Jeju and South Korea recovered from the Jeju Tragedy. Indeed, it is only in 2003(English edition in 2013) that the final definitive report on these disturbing events has been compiled and published. Like the Mangaian war ax, the Jeju Tragedy is a constant reminder of the need for peace and the avoidance of violence and war for harmony of civilization.”.

        A step toward world peace could be achieved by Korea, Japan, and the United States jointly celebrating their promotion of cherry blossom festivals based on Jeju Island native Prunus Yeodensis, or Somei- Yoshino Cherry trees. Based on bio-diplomacy, this celebration of new beginnings and the emphemeral nature of the material world could be a foundation for peace-building by these three nations and others and for putting aside past grievances.

        2021년 4월부터 8월에 제주시의 비닐하우스에서 재배되는 목이버섯에서 거저리 일종이 발견되었으며, 그를 동정한 결과 제주진주거저리 (Platydema takeii Nakane, 1956)로 확인되었다. 상업적으로 재배되는 버섯에 있어서 거저리 해충으로 인한 우리나라의 첫 번째 피해 사례이다. 여 기서는 이 해충의 피해 증상과 성충 및 유충의 진단형질을 제공하고자 한다.

        In the coastal areas of Jeju Island, composed of volcanic rocks, saltwater intrusion occurs due to excessive pumping and geological characteristics. Groundwater level and electrical conductivity (EC) in multi-depth monitoring wells in coastal areas were characterized from 2005 to 2019. During the period of the lowest monthly precipitation, from November 2017 until February 2018, groundwater level decreased by 0.32-0.91 m. During the period of the highest monthly precipitation, from September 2019 until October 2019, groundwater level increased by 0.46-2.95 m. Groundwater level fluctuation between the dry and wet seasons ranged from 0.79 to 3.73 m (average 1.82 m) in the eastern area, from 0.47 to 6.57 m (average 2.55 m) in the western area, from 0.77 to 8.59 m (average 3.53 m) in the southern area, and from 1.06 to 12.36 m (average 5.92 m) in the northern area. In 2013, when the area experienced decreased annual precipitation, at some monitoring wells in the western area, the groundwater level decreased due to excessive groundwater pumping and saltwater intrusion. Based on EC values of 10,000 μS/cm or more, saltwater intrusion from the coastline was 10.2 km in the eastern area, 4.1 km in the western area, 5.8 km in the southern area, and 5.7 km in the northern area. Autocorrelation analysis of groundwater level revealed that the arithmetic mean of delay time was 0.43 months in the eastern area, 0.87 months in the northern area, 10.93 months in the southern area, and 17.02 months in the western area. Although a few monitoring wells were strongly influenced by nearby pumping wells, the cross-correlation function of the groundwater level was the highest with precipitation in most wells. The seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average model indicated that the groundwater level will decrease in most wells in the western area and decrease or increase in different wells in the eastern area.

        In this study, to develop and verify the Jeju-type groundwater thermal system design program, the energy consumption and system performance derived by input into the design program based on the load calculated on the demonstration site and the groundwater temperature were compared and analyzed with the actual measured values. The theoretical values ​​of energy consumption and heating and cooling COP ​​obtained through the Jeju-type groundwater thermal system design program were 11.24kW, 5.28 for heating, 13.31kW, 3.94 for cooling respectively. The measured values ​​of energy consumption and COP of the Jeju-type groundwater thermal system were 3967.2kW and 4.5, respectively. The error between the theoretical value and the measured value obtained through the design program is 0% and 2.39%, respectively. The errors that occur in the predicted values ​​and the actual values ​​are due to variables that are ignored in the system assumptions. If users consider errors and use it when designing groundwater thermal systems, they can estimate the cost of required drilling works, heat exchangers, and heat pumps and analyze economic feasibility.

        To isolate aerobically and identify the diversity of halophilic bacteria in the soil around two ports, Daepopogu and Hwasun Port, on Jeju island, a total 46 halophilic bacteria strains were isolated and phylogenetically analysed. The isolated strains were divided into 3 phyla, 8 families, 16 genera and 23 species. The main taxa was the Bacilli class, which included 50.0% of the strains with 3 families, 10 genera and 15 species of Bacillaceae, Exiguobacterium_f and Planococcaceae. The second taxa was the Gammaproteobacteria class, which included 45.7% of the strains with 4 families, 5 genera and 7 species of Aeromonadaceae, Halomonadaceae, Marinobacteraceae and Vibrionaceae. The isolated strains were tested for hydrolytic enzymes, amylase, lipase and protease activity, and 31 strains showed activity of at least one enzyme. Furthermore, auxin activity was determined in 7 strains. This study showed that the isolated strains have possible applications in the food and agricultural industries and have importance as a genetic resource in Korea.

        The proposal in this paper outlines an idea for a Korean Peninsula focused Peace Cruise starting from Jeju World Peace Island and going up the eastern coast of the peninsula , taking in a port or two in Japan (such as Fukuoka) to accommodate potential Korean-descended passengers there and ending at Wonsan, where a grove of Jeju King Cherry (Prunus Yedoensis var. Nudiflora) trees could be planted progressively as a welcome avenue for those on the peace cruise ship. This grove of Jeju King Cherry trees will grow each time a Jeju World Peace Island Peninsula Cruise arrives. Wonsan has been a holiday place for the DPRK for some time and with the permission of that country could become a limited and controlled international destination for Peace and, perhaps, other cruise tours. There are precedents internationally for special zones to be declared for specific activities. Such places frequently become economic development zones for the host country. After successful itineraries have been shown, the Jeju World Peace Island ship could extend its cruise north to ports on the Kamchatka Peninsula and west to Chinese ports interested in the concept

        We assume that, even though Jeju Island ‘Peace’ Cherry Trees (1913), happened at different time and places, it connects each other as (1919) and Busan UN Forces Cemetery (1951) as an important connected diplomatic event of Provisional Government and Republic of Korea positively. Especially, it will bring a significant positive impact to Asia Community if we organize 2023 Korean Week Event: The First Korea Congress (1919) and Busan UN Forces Cemetery (1951) and suggest the invitation issues of UN Asia Headquarters to the Republic of Korea (2023) into Busan metropolitan city(Seoul, Kyunggi, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province) of Republic of Korea. We also assume Korean’s tolerance philosophy will Koreans to unite each other together if they will succeed to share spirit of tolerance from Busan UN Forces Cemetery. We have 2314 graves from 11 countries at the graveyard for UN Forces in Busan, which was built as the UN Headquarters Cemetery in January of 1951 and used as memorial space for participation in the Korean War, who had involved the War beyond their sacrifices. Recently we had 13 veterans, who got buried coming from 4 Americans, thre Hollanders, 2 Frenchmen, 2 Germans, 2 Englishmen, 1 Canadian and 1 headband after they died in their countries. (Joongang daily newspaper June 19, 2022). In the end they become Asian spirit of Toleran명 at the Busan UN Forces Cemetery beyond borders.

        PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to develop regression models for surface distress (SD), rut depth (RD), and international roughness index (IRI) of Jeju Island local road by analyzing the correlations between the pavement performance and its influencing factors. METHODS : First, the differences between pavements in inland Korea and Jeju Island in terms of performance and influencing factors were investigated. Influencing factors were assigned to pavement sections on Jeju Island using the inverse distance weighting method, and the correlations between the pavement performance and influencing factors were analyzed. As a result, maximum temperature, heat wave days, annual temperature range, precipitation days, precipitation intensity, ESAL, etc. were determined as independent variables for the pavement performance prediction models. Multiple regression analysis was performed to develop the pavement performance models using the selected independent variables. RESULTS : The RD, maximum temperature, and precipitation days were determined to be the independent variables for the SD predictive model. The SD, maximum temperature, annual temperature range, heat wave days, and precipitation days were selected as independent variables of the RD prediction model. In addition, the RD, annual temperature range, heat wave days, precipitation days, and ESAL were selected as independent variables for the IRI prediction model. CONCLUSIONS : As a result of the study, an actual forecast model for SD, RD, and IRI was developed. Based on this model, it is possible to estimate the predictive value of the missing performance data in the studied interval. If the factors affecting performance are managed in terms of maintenance beyond a certain level, it can help those responsible for road maintenance to rationally select the maintenance method and timing.

        The purpose of this study is to provide information about annual variations in catch size and changes in reproductive biology in the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, a commercially important species in Jeju Island. Samples were collected from coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea by coastal trap fishery from January to November 2021. Octopus vulgaris have been decreasing in this region since 1984. The mantle length (ML) ranged from 4.5 to 17.8 cm and body weight (BW) ranged form 88.5 to 2,657.5 g. A χ 2 -test revealed that the number of males was significantly greater than females (χ 2 = 32.712, df = 10, P<0.05). Mature females were found from January to July and male occurred January to August. The gonadosomatic index value was higher from July to August than other months. The relationship between mantle length and body weight was BW = 2.4527ML 2.3139 (female) and BW = 2.6785ML 2.3159 (male). At 50% group maturity, female and male average weight was estimated to be 554.7 g and 330.6 g, respectively.

        As a series of basic research to draw the pilot design measures for developing the habitat apparatus of Sulculus diversicolor supertexta inhabiting the coastal area of Jeju island, this study conducted a water tank experiment to understand the habitat marine environment of Sulculus diversicolor supertexta and the preference of habitat space focusing on the research fisheries performing the discharge of marine products. In the composition degree of marine algae in both fisheries, Donggwi-ri showed the highest gulfweed (79.3%) as brown algae and there were some coralline algae (17.2%) as red algae. Hansu-ri yielded the highest gulfweed (48.1%) as brown algae, which was followed by sea lettuce (10.4%) as green algae. In the preference of habitat space, the shelter angles 40° showed the highest adhesion as number of 82.9, which was followed by 60° and 70° as 69.2 and 68.2 respectively (P<0.05) by reviewing the environmental characteristics of habit of Salculus diversicolor supertexta in the coastal fishery of Jeju Island, when considering the adhesion rate in each of five shelters with different angles. In the future, there should be continuous research and monitoring for designing the fish shelters suitable for the coastal fisheries of Jeju island, and it would be also necessary to add the field-centered sustainable concrete research.
