        This study was conducted to investigate the effect of waterlogging stress on the physiological response and growth characteristics of the five Italian ryegrass varieties. For all varieties, the germination rate of seed decreased by 10-15% as the waterlogging period increased, but the waterlogging stress treatment after the early seedling stage increased the growth of shoot and root length. Photosynthetic activity (Fv/Fm) according to waterlogging stress treatment decreased in all vareity, and Florida 80 showed the least decrease with 1.5%. Waterlogging stress treatment was found to reduce the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (malondialdehyde, MDA) and the activities of antioxidant enzymes. These results suggest that other mechanisms may be involved in the defense mechanism of Italian ryegrass against waterlogging stress, such as promoting root growth to escape from waterlogging stress, in addition to the antioxidant enzyme system.

        This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculation to domestically-cultivated Italian ryegrass (IRG) on silage fermentation and in vitro ruminal fermentation. There were six treatments based on the LAB inoculants: 1) no addition of LAB (negative control: NC), additions of 2) commercially-available LAB (positive control: PC), 3) Lactobacillus plantarum (LPL), 4) L. paracasei (LPA), 5) L. acidophilus (LA), and 6) L. pentosus (LPT). All treatments were inoculated at a concentration of 106 CFU/g and ensiled for 3, 7, 21, and 42 days in triplicate and analyzed for nutritive values when ensiling was terminated. Day 42 silage from all treatments were also examined for in vitro ruminal fermentation. After 42 days, LAB-inoculated silages had higher (P<0.05) lactic acid concentration compared to the NC. In terms of nutritive values, the silages treated with LPA, LA, and LPT showed higher (P<0.05) crude protein and lower (P<0.05) neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber content compared to the rest of the treatment. In vitro ruminal dry matter degradability was not affected by LAB addition. However, LAB-treated IRG had shown higher (P<0.05) ammonia-N compared with that of the NC. LPA had shown the highest (P<0.05) volatile fatty acid concentration among the LAB examined. In conclusion, the addition of a single strain of LAB appeared to produce a quality IRG silage compared with the NC and the PC. Among the strains examined, LPA seemed to be superior to the others.

        Anaerobic digestion is a collection of naturally occurring processes that convert organic matter and liquid residue, so-called digestate. The use of digestate biofertilizers is one of the important components of integrated nutrient management, as they are renewable sources of plant nutrients for sustainable agriculture. Seeds of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) were germinated in different concentration of Chlorella in order to investigate it’s the effect of Chlorella on growth parameters, seed germination and early growth. The experiment using plug tray was conducted at the green house placed in the Sangji University. The experiment consisted of nine treatments including different concentrations of Chlorella sp. culture solution and non-treated control. The germination percentage at the treatment with 25% Chlorella sp. culture solution was greater than that of control. The 50% concentration of Chlorella sp. culture solution was found to promote a better seedling growth in terms of shoot length, fresh weight and dry weight compared to the anaerobic digestate. Results showed that the best concentration of Chlorella culture solution was achieved by the 50% concentration of Chlorella culture solution treatment. As a conclusion, the application of Chlorella culture solution was found to be able to promote the germination and shoots growth of Italian ryegrass

        A study was performed to investigate the effect of reseeding rates of Italian ryegrass (IRG)〔Lolium multiflorum L.〕on its nutritive value and productivity in native grasssland of Jeju region from Oct. 2011 to Jul. 2012. IRG was sown at reseeding rates (0 30, 40 and 50 kg/ha) in native grassland. When IRG was sown, there was no draught and lodging damage. Plant height in treatment 30 kg/ha of reseeding IRG was the tallest at all harvest stages (p<0.05). DM yield in treatment of 30 kg/ha of reseeding IRG was 12,790 kg/ha and increased 2.7 folds as compared to control. However, there was no significant difference among the treatments. The content of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) significantly decreased in treatment of reseeding, compared to control (p<0.05). In general, the content of NDF in second harvest stage was lower than that of control in first harvest stage. The content of acid detergent fiber (ADF) also showed simliar trend as content of NDF. The content of total digestible nutrients (TDN) in treatments of 30 kg/ha and 50 kg/ha of reseeding were approximately 45.2% each. The content of TDN in treatments of 30 kg/ha and 50kg/ha of reseeding increased as compared to 40 kg/ha and control of reseeding (p<0.05). Therefore, it is conclued that reseeding rate of IRG may improve the yield and nutritive values of IRG at 30 kg/ha.

        To investigate of C and N metabolisms in response to phosphorus-deficient stress during regrowth of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.), C and N metabolites were analyzed at 0, 6, 12 and 24 days after defoliation. P-sufficient (control, +P) and P-absent (-P) nutrient solutions were applied from 7 days before defoliation, and continued for one cycle of 24 day-regrowth period. During 24 days of regrowth, dry matter of regrowing shoots and remaining tissues were not significantly different between +P and -P treatment. In remaining stubble, 70% to 91 % decline of the initial level (at day 0) in all C compounds occurred during the first 6 days of regrowth. Initial amounts of nitrate and amino acids in roots were significantly higher in the +P medium. Nitrate contents in stubble in the +P medium significantly decreased for the first 12 days and then rapidly recovered, while that of the -P medium continuously decreased until day 24. Amino acids in stubble in the P medium were continuously increased during the whole regrowth period. Soluble proteins in stubble in the +P medium also largely fell down (46.0% of the initial) for only the first 6 days, however the decline in the -P medium continued until day 12. In regrowing shoots, the accumulation of C compounds was significantly higher, while that of N compounds except amino acids was largely lower in the -P medium. These results showed a stimulation of carbohydrate synthesis and a compensatory utilization of organic reserves occurred to support regrowth under P-deficient condition.

        이탈리안 라이그라스의 염해반응에 대한 기초 자료를 얻고자 NaCl의 8개 농도에서 14개 품종(2배체:7 4배체:7)의 발아율과 유묘건물중, 엽록소 및 유리 proline함량을 조사하였다. 1. 발아율은 NaCl 300mM 이상에서 크게 감소하였으며 대조구에 대한 50%의 발아감소 NaCl농도는 344mM이었다. 2배체품종은 4배체품종보다 감소 정도가 컸으며 NaCl의 농도가 높을수록 발아율에 대한 품종들의 차이가 크게 나타났다. 2. 지상부 건물중은 NaCl 166mM에서 대조구에 대한 50%의 감소율을 보여 발아기보다 유묘기에 NaCl에 대한 영향이 더욱 컸는데, 품종들의 발아율과 지상부 건물중과는 상관관계가 없었다. 3. 지하부 건물중은 NaCl농도가 높아질수록 감소 정도가 커서 NaCl 148mM에서 50%의 감소가 나타났으며, 품종들의 지상부 건물중과 지하부 건물중은 유의적인 상관관계가 있었다. 4. 지상부 건물중과 지하부 건물중은 NaCl의 각 농도에서 2배체가 4배체보다 높았다. 5. Total 엽록소 함량은 NaCl농도가 높아질수록 증가하였는다 엽록소 a가 엽록소 b보다 함량이 더욱 증가하였으며, 엽록소 a는 4배체가 2배체보다 높았으나 엽록소 b는 2배체가 4배체보다 높았다. 품종들의 엽록소 a함량과 지상부 건물중과는 NaCl 150mM 이상에서 높은 상관관계가 인정되었다. 6. 유리 proline함량은 NaCl처리에 의하여 현저히 축적되었는데 2배체와 4배체 사이에는 별다른 차이가 없었으며, 품종들의 지상부 건물중과도 상관관계가 없었다.
