PURPOSES : The logistic roads for freight transport along to the new port of Busan have been suffered by the rapid weather changes including high temperature and torrential rain. As a result, the roads require annual repair, which have been distressed seriously by the heavy logistic and environmental loads. Therefore, we need to identify the cause of the road pavement distresses and find a proper design method to minimize the pavement distress in order to prohibit the problem aggravated.
METHODS : The damaged conditions of the logistic roads were investigated on-site. In addition, applied pavement designs, real traffic volumes, and historical climatic information were intensively collected for this project. With the investigated and collected data Korean pavement design program (KPRP) was implemented to analyzed the causes of the damaged roads and conceive the pavement design draft optimized for the roads.
RESULTS : According to the investigation and KPRP analysis, the traffic volume to transport freights impacts significantly the pavement distress, so that a higher PG grade binder type should be used, for which polymer modified asphalt (PMA) binders are recommended. Moreover, its pavement thickness should be increased to secure load bearing capacity, but thickening the pavement has been discouraged due to difficulties induced by the road-sectional change, especially road-height change.
CONCLUSIONS : In conclusion, 5cm PMA overlay is suggested for the normal-scale maintenance, and 7cm PMA overlay for large-scale maintenance. Besides these, the application of Polymer-modified Stone Matrix Asphalt (PSMA) using PG76-22 binder would be the best preventive maintenance method, which has been well know as having higher fatigue resistant performance than general PMA. However, if we use PSMA, quality control should be very cautious since PSMA can be very susceptible premature distress if its production and construction are improperly proceeded.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the road design elements affecting the lateral driving safety under high-speed driving conditions with a speed limit of 140 km/h and to derive useful implications to design of safer roads.
METHODS : A full-scale driving simulator was used to evaluate the various design scenarios. Different regression techniques and a random forest method were adopted to conduct comprehensive comparisons among the simulation scenarios. The relationships between the safety indicators, including the frequency of the lane departures and the standard deviation of the lateral acceleration, and the design elements were explored in terms of lateral driving safety. RESULTS : The length of the combined alignment was found to be a significant factor affecting the lateral driving safety based on the analysis of the frequency of lane departures. Regarding the standard deviation of the lateral acceleration, it was identified that the length of the horizontal curve, the length of the bridge, and the right-side superelevation must be considered significant factors associated with driving safety while designing the road under high-speed driving conditions.
CONCLUSIONS : Based on the findings of this study, a set of recommendations for designing roads was proposed. For example, the proper length of the combined alignment and the horizontal curve should be determined to prevent crashes due to hazardous lateral driving events because the installation of sufficient superelevation in the bridge section would be limited under high-speed driving conditions. In addition, applying a larger horizontal curve radius with longitudinal grooving is a promising approach to tackle risky driving conditions.
PURPOSES : In this study, we review the method and equations suggested in the usual guidelines to calculate the lane widening for curved sections, and proposed values of the widths and the amount of widening that reflected the driving trajectory of an articulated bus.
METHODS : A simulation was used to obtain the trajectory of articulated bus, which is adequate for a Super-Bus Rapid Transit(S-BRT) service with the longest length of the design vehicle. This study was conducted by dividing the trajectory into curved and tangential sections, and the extent of widening was analyzed by changing the rotation angle by 5°. In addition, the results related to the amount of widening from the conducted analysis were applied to particular situation of right turns of an articulated bus at urban intersection. The possible conflict situations that may occur were analyzed.
RESULTS : When analyzing the rotation angle at which the size of the driving width was set to be the largest for each lane center radius, the rotation angle for a lane center radius ( =15m) was 35°, the rotation angle for a lane center radius ( =20m) was 45°, the rotation angle for a lane center radius ( =25m) was 55°, and the rotation angle for a lane center radius ( =30m) was 60°.
CONCLUSIONS : As the radius increases, the required driving width and the amount of widening decrease. The rotation angle that requires the largest driving width is presented. The results show that as the central radius ( ) of the lane increases, the amount of widening for each rotation angle decreases. In addition, based on the results of the analysis of the driving width for each rotation, the trajectory of an articulated bus was applied to an at-grade intersection to check the distance required for widening from the beginning point of the curve.
PURPOSES : This paper proposes a design framework for planetary road infrastructure by considering the characteristic environment, natural resource, and loading conditions on the Moon and Mars.
METHODS : From the perspective of civil engineering, available literatures such as technical articles, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Technology Roadmaps 2015, Strategic Knowledge Gap, and mechanistic-empirical pavement design method are comprehensively reviewed for planetary road construction. The concept of in situ resource utilization (ISRU) is re-interpreted by comparing ISRU on the Earth and Moon with emphasis on the significance of interconnection between resource utilization and infrastructure development.
RESULTS : According to the literature reviews, the factors that have significant effect on planetary road pavement design, construction, and maintenance are selected and evaluated. In addition, by considering the interconnection issue, a design framework is suggested that includes the resource issues not only of planetary road pavement but also of construction equipment. Subsequently, the framework is widened to apply for preliminary planetary infrastructure.
CONCLUSIONS : Although the proposed preliminary design framework is not conclusive and has to be elaborated, an initial framework to consider interconnection issues and ISRU is suggested for planetary road pavement. The suggested framework will be applied for road pavement design and will be used to evaluate the cost-benefit ratio of alternatives.

Also, the convenience of the design is achieved by adopting the same design wind velocity given in the bridge design code by applying the wind velocity ratio defined for the design period of the support structure.CONCLUSIONS :It is presented that the design using the wind load combination proposed in this study achieved the target reliability index and the design wind load for different design periods can be conveniently defined by applying the velocity ratio proposed in this study.
In contemporary society, vibration and noise in the road nearby buildings have become social problems as vehicles operation has increased. Especially, in the case of the building used to art performance, available suitability of the building is tested by the indoor noise class. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is the measurement of the structure-borne noise of Seoul Art Center nearby Umyeonsan tunnel and analyzing the effects of countermeasure to it. To measure the effects of countermeasure, not only structure-borne noise is measured, but also the vibration is measured, before and after the construction of pavement using pad and porous asphalt. Consequently, the sound pressure level in art center 1st floor is reduced after mat pavement method, structure-borne noise that was high in 25Hz wide-band before pavement decreased regardless of experimental vehicle's velocity. Using porous asphalt pavement the noise was reduced about 3 dB(A).
PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to validate the design criteria of the concrete modular road system, which is a new semi-bridgetype concept road, through a comparison of numerical analysis results and actual loading test results under static axial loads.
METHODS : To design the semi-bridge-type modular road, both the bridge design code and the concrete structural design code were adopted. The standard truck load (KL-510) was applied as the major traffic vehicle for the design loading condition. The dimension of the modular slab was designed in consideration of self-weight, axial load, environmental load, and combined loads, with ultimate limit state coefficients. The ANSYS APDL (2010) program was used for case studies of center and edge loading, and the analysis results were compared with the actual mock-up test results.
RESULTS : A full-scale mock-up test was successfully conducted. The maximum longitudinal steel strains were measured as about 35 and 83.5 micro-strain (within elastic range) at center and edge loading locations, respectively, under a 100 kN dual- wheel loading condition by accelerating pavement tester.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of the comparison between the numerical analysis and the full-scale test, the maximum converted stress range at the edge location is 32~51% of the required standard flexural strength under the two times over-weight loading condition. In the case of edge loading, the maximum converted stresses from the Westergaard equation, the ANSYS APDL analysis, and the mock-up test are 1.95, 1.7, and 2.3 times of that of the center loading case, respectively. The primary reason for this difference is related to the assumption of the boundary conditions of the vertical connection between the slab module and the crossbeam module. Even though more research is required to fully define the boundary conditions, the proposed design criteria for the concrete modular road finally seems to be reasonable.
PURPOSES: Ambiguous decision on whether rural or urban area for road design can increase the construction cost and restrict the land use of surrounding area. However, administrative classification on rural and urban area is not directly related to road design because of this classification is not based on the engineering viewpoint, so method which can explain the road design context is required. METHODS: Method which enables to identify the area for road design is suggested based on the deceleration expected to be experienced by drivers who use the road section concerned. Deceleration rate corresponding to the area such as rural or urban suggested in Road Design Guideline is used as the criteria to identify the area by comparing this value with the estimated deceleration rate at the road section concerned. Speed profile method is utilized to derive the deceleration rate, and speed estimation way for reflecting both road geometry and intersection is suggested using stopping sight distance concept. RESULTS: The procedure of the method application is suggested, and the design example utilizing the method is provided. CONCLUSIONS : The method is expected to be used to identify the area for road design with engineering viewpoint, and design consistency among the roads with similar driving environment can be made.
PURPOSES: Previous Speed Profile reflects the patterns of speeds in sections of tangents to curves in the roads. However these patterns are uniform of speeds and Acceleration/Deceleration. In oder to supplement these shortcomings. this study made a new profile which can contain factors of Acceleration/Deceleration through theories of Previous Speed Profiles.
METHODS : For sakes, this study developed the speed prediction model of Rural Multi-Lane Highways and calculated Acceleration/Deceleration by appling a Polynomial model based on developed speed prediction model. Polynomial model is based on second by second. Acceleration/Deceleration Profile is developed with the various scenarios of road geometric conditions.
RESULTS: The longer an ahead tangent length is, The higher an acceleration rate in curve occurs due to wide sight distance. However when there are big speed gaps between two curves, the longer tangent length alleviate acceleration rate.
CONCLUSIONS: Acceleration/Deceleration Profile can overview th patterns of speeds and Accelerations/Decelerations in the various road geometric conditions. Also this result will help road designer have a proper guidance to exam a potential geometric conditions where may occur the acceleration/deceleration states.
PURPOSES: Road Design Consistency Evaluation can guarantee road alignments with safety factors, however it can be hard work to deal with general car accident factors in only this evaluation index. Ideal Road Design Consistency Evaluation is show the mutual balance of road alignment and human factors with a variety of factors for road safety. METHODS: This study carried out overall road safety evaluations which are methods of running speeding consistency and car platoon safety analysis (driver's behaviors factors) as well. RESULTS: Out of 13 sections in a experimental road layout, safety factors of 8 sections showed 'Good' or 'Fair' status. However, 'Poor' results were found out in 5 sections. Particularly, it showed the different outcomes among the 4 evaluation methods used in this study. CONCLUSIONS: Road safety countermeasures were proposed for the potentially dangerous sections in road which failed to identify in the other methods. This study will contribute toward future study of more reliable Road Design Consistency Evaluation in the future for road safety.
