To dispose of spent nuclear fuel, the most promising method is disposal in a deep geological repository with a multi-barrier system. Among the multi-barrier system, canisters are used to contain the spent nuclear fuel. A role of the canister is to withstand corrosion load from the deep geological environment as possible as long. Corrosion processes consist of corroding agents transport to the canister surface and electrochemical reactions between the corroding agents and the canister surface. According to previous King’s electrochemical experiments, the mass-transport rate of corroding agents is slower than the electrochemical reaction rate with copper when the canister is surrounded by dense bentonite blocks. Therefore, the mass-transport rate is a rate-determining step for the whole corrosion process. Despite of the importance of transportation of oxidizing agents in bentonite, the transportation process was not paid attention. For example, existing models which are called continuum models assumed that the corroding agents pass through the pore in the porous medium because the continuum model does not consider the fracture networks in the bentonite. Here we develop a dualpermeability and dual-porosity model. In this model, the transport of corroding agents is considered that they pass through fracture within the porous medium. The difference between the dual-permeability and dual-porosity model is whether the corroding agents can pass through the pore. The dual-permeability model assumed that the mass-transport occurs within both fracture and porous medium. On the other hand, the dual-porosity model assumed that the mass-transport occurs only within fractures. Through both models, we found that the transport rate in the fractures is much higher than through the pores, and the canister lifetime at a point where contacting the fracture tip is much shorter than other parts when the canister lifetime is calculated by the transport-governed condition. In addition, the temperature distributions in the fracture are different compared to the existing continuum model. Our results show the effect of fractures in terms of not only corroding agents transport but also the canister lifetime. We anticipate our model to be a first step for the corrosion estimation model coupled with fracture networks.

The effect of the process conditions of high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating on the porosity of the coating layer is investigated. HVOF coating layers are formed by depositing amorphous FeMoCrBC powder. Oxygen pressure varies from 126 to 146 psi and kerosene pressure from 110 to 130 psi. The Microstructural analysis confirms its porosity. Data analysis is performed using experimental data. The oxygen pressure-kerosene pressure ratio is found to be a key contributor to the porosity. An empirical model is proposed using linear regression analysis. The proposed model is then validated using additional test data. We confirm that the oxygen pressure-kerosene pressure ratio exponentially increases porosity. We present a porosity prediction model relationship for the oxygen pressure-kerosene pressure ratio.

When performing finite element analysis using materials with porosity the porosity shows different mechanical properties from the existing mechanical properties of the existing base materials. In this study the equivalent properties were calculated and verified by applying the representative volume element (RVE) method and assuming that the material with porosity is a 2D orthotropic material. In case of finite element analysis using porous material or composite material, it is inefficient to perform the analysis through material modeling. Based on the element volume and element stress values derived using the finite element analysis program, the representative stress values and elastic modulus matrix were calculated using Python. In addition, equivalent properties were derived using the calculated elastic modulus matrix. The pores were simulated by etching a thin plate specimen made of STS304 material in a certain pattern, and the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio were measured through a UTM and compared with simulation results. It was confirmed that an error of 7.028% for elastic modulus and 10% for Poisson's ratio occurred, and through this, the validity of this simulation was verified.

The demand for materials with porosity is steadily increasing and the need for porous materials is increasing in fields such as chemical engineering and energy storage. In order to minimize trial and error, verifying design validity through finite element method at the design stage has the advantage to verify design validity with low cost. However there are limitations in finite element analysis using porous materials. In this study calculating the equivalent mechanical properties reflecting the porosity was carried out, and the first step was the isotropic elasticity in plane stress condition. The equivalent elastic modulus and the equivalent Poisson's ratio were derived through simulation. Assuming that the voids exist in a two-dimensional symmetrical shape and a constant distribution, the unit cell was defined and the equivalent mechanical properties were calculated. The specimen with same condition were measured through a universal test machine (UTM), the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio were measured. The similarity between the value obtained through the simulation and the value measured through the experiment was under 5%, so the validity of this simulation was verified. With this result, FEM with porous materials will be used for design.

The change in the open porosity of bulk graphite as a function of the uniaxial molding pressure during manufacturing is studied using artificial graphite powder. Subsequently, the graphite is impregnated to determine the effect of the open porosity on the impregnation efficiency and to improve the density of the final bulk graphite. Bulk graphite is manufactured with different uniaxial molding pressures after mixing graphite powder, which is the by-product of processing the final graphite products and phenolic resin. The bulk density and open porosity are measured using the Archimedes method. The bulk density and open porosity of bulk graphite increase as the molding pressure increases. The open porosity of molded bulk graphite is 25.35% at 30 MPa and 29.84% at 300 MPa. It is confirmed that the impregnation efficiency increases when the impregnation process is performed on a specimen with large open porosity. In this study, the bulk density of bulk graphite molded at 300 MPa is 11.06% higher than that before impregnation, which is the highest reported increase. Therefore, it is expected that the higher the uniaxial pressure, the higher the density of bulk graphite.

The study aims to use asphaltene particles (As) extracted from natural bitumen to synthesize activated carbon (ACAs). The asphaltene particles were mixed with a fixed weight of potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an activating agent, preheated to 600 °C, and then treated with 15% hydrofluoric acid (HF). The methylene blue (MB) 20 mg/l was used to determine the adsorption capacity of ACAs and reactivated carbon (RACAs). The morphology of ACAs and its components were characterized using scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray (SEM–EDX) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The study included the application of adsorption isotherms Freundlich and Langmuir on the experimental data of the studied systems. The yield of ACAs was 92% of the raw material. The activated carbon displayed high adsorption capacity and can be reprocessed after reactivation using microwave radiation. The active surface area of ACAs is found to be 970 m2/g. The effectiveness and adsorption ability of ACAs and RACAs, as proven by its adsorption capacity (218.15 and 217.907 mg/g) for MB, demonstrate that ACAs and RACAs have a large external surface area and an extensive array of pores. The ACAs are most sensitive at 30 °C and neutral pH. The results also showed that the isotherms have a good fit to the experimented data.

In this study, we prepared ACFs with a high specific surface area from various precursors (rayon, pitch, and oxidized polyacrylonitrile-based fibers) by a steam-activation technique and investigated the effects of the micropore and mesopore fraction on 2-CEES adsorption behaviors. The activation time was precisely controlled so that the activation yield was in the range of 35–40% to ensure the mechanical properties of the ACFs. The N2 adsorption isotherm characteristics at 77K were confirmed by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, Barrett–Joyner–Halenda and non-local density functional theory equations. The adsorption capacities of the ACF were measured by breakthrough experiments in the gas phase (750 μg/mL of 2-CEES in N2 flow). The removal efficiency of the ACFs was evaluated and compared with that of AC. From the results, specific surface areas and total pore volume of the ACF were determined to be 1380–1670 m2/g and 0.61–0.82 cm3/g, respectively. It was also observed that various pore characteristics of ACF were found to be dependent on crystallite structure of each precursor. The break through time (C/C0 = 0.10) was in the order of Oxi-Pan-H-9-2 < Saratoga AC < Rayon-H-9-3 < Pitch-H-9-4. This indicates that 2-CEES adsorption capacity could be a function not only of specific surface area or total pore volume, but also of sub-mesopore volume fraction in the range of 1.5–2.5 nm of adsorbents.

Selective laser melting (SLM), a type of additive manufacturing (AM) technology, leads a global manufacturing trend by enabling the design of geometrically complex products with topology optimization for optimized performance. Using this method, three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided design (CAD) data components can be built up directly in a layer-by-layer fashion using a high-energy laser beam for the selective melting and rapid solidification of thin layers of metallic powders. Although there are considerable expectations that this novel process will overcome many traditional manufacturing process limits, some issues still exist in applying the SLM process to diverse metallic materials, particularly regarding the formation of porosity. This is a major processing-induced phenomenon, and frequently observed in almost all SLM-processed metallic components. In this study, we investigate the mechanical anisotropy of SLM-produced 316L stainless steel based on microstructural factors and highly-oriented porosity. Tensile tests are performed to investigate the microstructure and porosity effects on mechanical anisotropy in terms of both strength and ductility.

Recently, the interest in the development of Oilless bearings, which is a kind of sliding bearing, has been attracting to industry. Oilless bearings are mainly used in areas where fluid lubrication is difficult to apply because of large contact area. The purpose of this study is to develop products with higher load and durability compared to the conventional oilless bearing. For this purpose, the optimal steel sheet was obtained and the porosity evaluation was carried out by evaluating bronze sinterability for various steel sheets. The conclusion obtained is as follows.; It was found that steel plate suitable for bronze powder plate is SPCC CR (Cold Rolled). The average porosity of KAG-23, KAG-23G and PBF-8 specimens was 16.8%, 17.8% and 22.1%, respectively, indicating that the porosity of PBF-8 specimen was the highest. As the number of rolling increases, the surface porosity decreases rapidly.

Biological efficiency (BE), the ratio of fresh mushrooms harvested per dry substrate weight, expressed as the percentage of Lentinula edodes, also known as shiitake, was determined using the ‘Sanjo 701’ strain stored in the Department of Mushroom at the Korea National College of Agriculture and Fisheries. The mycelia were grown in glass columns with varying levels of moisture content and varying mixing periods of 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 hours. The substrate was sterilized using a steam pressure autoclave sterilizer at normal and high pressure to avoid contamination. The results showed that mycelial growth (126 mm/15 days) was optimized at 55% moisture content. The best mycelial growth of 117 mm/15 days was obtained with 2 hours of mixing time. Normal pressure sterilization yielded better results with mycelial growth of 96 mm/15 days at 100°C compared to 88 mm /15 days with sterilization at 121°C. Mycelial density was higher, i.e. 3(+++), with normal pressure sterilization compared to 2(++) with high pressure sterilization. Furthermore, sawdust mixed with 5% woodchips increased the substrate porosity and yielded higher mycelial growth. Thus, we demonstrated that the optimum harvest or potential increased yield of shiitake can be obtained by modulating moisture content, mixing time, and substrate porosity.

The object of this paper is to examine the optimum sintering condition which have excellent mechanical properties compared to the conventional oilless bearing. It is shown that the sintering rate is the most excellent at 850°C, especially KAB-23, KAB-23G, PBF-8 specimens. With increasing the nitrogen injection rate, the apparent porosity increased gradually. In contrast, with increasing the hydrogen injection rate, the apparent porosity decreased gradually. It is shown that the apparent porosity is very useful in the range of nitrogen injection rate 2Nm 3 and hydrogen injection rate 10Nm 3 .

The surfaces of most atmosphereless solar system objects are referred to as regolith, layers of loosely connected fragmentary debris, produced by meteorite impacts. Measurements of light scattered from such surfaces provides information about the composition and structure of the surface. A suitable way to characterize the scattering properties is to consider how the intensity and polarization of scattered light depends on the particle size, composition, porosity, roughness, wavelength of incident light and the geometry of observation. In the present work, the effect of porosity on bidirectional re ectance as a function of phase angle is studied for alumina powder with grain size of 0.3 μm and olivine powder with grain size of 49 μm at 543.5 nm. The optical constants of the alumina sample for each porosity were calculated with Maxwell Garnett e ective medium theory. On using each of the optical constants of alumina sample in Mie theory with the Hapke model the variation of bidirectional re ectance is obtained as a function of phase angle with porosity as a parameter. Experimental re ectance data are in good agreement the model. For the olivine sample the effect of porosity is studied using Hapke (2008).

When manufacturing bulk graphite, pores develop within the bulk during the carbonization process due to the volatile components of the fillers and the binders. As a result, the physical properties of bulk graphite are inferior to the theoretical values. Impregnants are impregnated into the pores generated in the carbonization process through pressurization and/or depressurization. The physical properties of bulk graphite that has undergone impregnation and re-carbonization processes are outstanding. In the present study, a green body was manufactured by molding with natural graphite flakes and phenolic resin at 45 MPa. Bulk graphite was manufactured by carbonizing the green body at 700 and it was subsequently impregnated with impregnants having viscosity of 25.0 cP, 10.3 cP, and 5.1 cP, and the samples were re-carbonized at 700°C. The above process was repeated three times. The open porosity of bulk graphite after the final process was 22.25%, 19.86%, and 18.58% in the cases of using the impregnant with viscosity of 25.0 cP, 10.3 cP, and 5.1 cP, respectively.

A numerical analysis was performed to study PEMFC performance characteristics depending on the flow direction of cathode reactant gas, cathode relative humidity, and porosity of gas diffusion layer. As cathode relative humidity decreases and porosity increases, current density increases due to better diffusion of reactant gas to cathode surface. As current density increases, power density increases initially and then decreases with its maximum located around current density value of 2.2 Amperes per square centimeter. From the analysis of current density distribution inside membrane, the counter-flow cases show more uniform profile across the membrane than the co-flow cases due to more uniform reactant gas supply.
