“Hyemi”, a new covered cultivar derived from the crosses between “Suwon 298” and “Milyang 34/Albori//Dongbori” developed at the Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI), NICS, RDA in 2006. The origin of “Hyemi” is “Suwon 400” (SB951032-B-B-B-28). The initial cross was made in 1995 and the selected line showed a high yield and good quality characteristics under yield trial test in 2003. “Suwon 400” consistently performed well for three years (2004-2006) from the four locations of regional yield trial (RYT) in Korea and released as “Hyemi”. The characteristics of “Hyemi” were the following: rate Ⅳ growth habit, green leaf and stem, compact spike and with long rough awns. The heading date was April 29 in upland and April 23 in paddy field, which was similar and 2 days earlier than that with check cultivar, “Olbori”. The culm length was 81 cm which was 4 cm shorter than those with check cultivar. It showed spike length of 4.1 cm and 646 spikes per m2, 52 grains per spike, 33.4 g of 1,000-grain weight and 672 g of test weight. It showed similar winter hardiness and higher resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) than those with check cultivar. It showed higher protein content, whiteness and total phenol content than those of the check cultivar, but lower β-glucan content and pearling rate. The average yield of the pearled grain in the RYT was 3.95 ton ha-1 in upland and 4.38 ton ha-1 in paddy field, which was 13% and 16% higher than that of the check cultivar, respectively. This cultivar would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum mean temperature of -8℃ in January in Korean peninsula.

“Passion”, a new Saxifraga cultivar was released by the National Institute of Highland Agriculture (NIHA), in 2006. A crossing was made between “Hongsaja” with red purple (RPN66A) petals and “Vibo” with red-purple (RPN66B) petals in 2004. The selection and flower characteristics were investigated from 2004 to 2006 in greenhouse. The first flowering time of “Passion” is 1st of October, period of flowering is 26 days and number of flowers per plant was 211.2. The flower color shows a red purple (RPN66A) and number of petals was 6.0. Flower width is 3.0 cm and flower length is 2.0 cm. It can be used for pot flower. 50% shading treatment is a good cultural practice against direct sunlight and soft rot disease occurs usually by over-irrigation.

The first flowering time of “Piangse” is 25th of September, period of flowering is 25 days and number of flowers per plant was 98.1. The flower color shows a white (W155C) and number of petals was 7.0. Flower width is 3.6 cm and flower length is 2.9 cm. It can be used for pot flower. 50% shading treatment is a good cultural practice against direct sunlight and soft rot disease occurs usually by over-irrigation.

“Jecy Gold” is a new kiwifruit variety developed at the National Institute of Subtropical Agriculture (NISA), RDA in 2003, which was for the utilization as fruit with yellow flesh and high soluble solids. This variety was selected from seeds obtained from the cross breeding between Actinidia chinensis cv. “Golden Yellow” and A. chinensis cv. “Songongu” with yellow flesh in 1997. Seedling and line selections were conducted from 1998 to 1999, and characteristic trials were carried out from 2000 to 2002. After developed, it was also conducted to the test of adaptability in kiwifruit orchards of Jeju island from 2003 to 2006. The branch of “Jecy Gold” sprouts strongly and the color of leaf is slightly dark green. The shape of fruit is obovoid, and the color of peel is yellowish-brown without hair. The average weight of fruit is 128.4 g. The core is middle and soft, the percicarp is golden yellow, and the texture is fragile and juicy. Soluble solids concentration is 14.8 oBrix. The total acid content is 0.69% and the fruit yield is higher about 30% than that of A. deliciosa cv. “Hayward”. The content of vitamin C is higher than that of A. deliciosa cv. “Hayward”. The harvesting time is from late October to early November and the fruit can be preserved about 90 days at 2°C. This variety can be planted bellow 100 m sea level and should be grown under shelter to prevent from disease and cold. This variety will be cultivated about 100 ha by 2011 in the southern part of Korea and has been supplied about 10 ha in 2007.

“Matnami” is a new sweetpotato variety developed by Mokpo Experiment Station, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2006, for table use and food processing. This variety was selected from the cross between “Hongmi” and MI9510-12 in 1999. Seedling and line selections were performed from 2000 to 2002. Preliminary and advanced yield trials were carried out from 2003 to 2004. The regional yield trials were conducted at six locations from 2005 to 2006. “Matnami” has cordate leaf, green with purple vine and petiole, elliptic storage root, red skin and yellow flesh color of storage root. The average yield of storage root was 27.0 ton/ha in the regional yield trials, which was 11% higher than that of Yulmi variety. Number of storage roots over 50 gram per plant was 2.6. The average weight of one storage root was 173 gram. This variety is also resistant to fusarium wilt and nematode. In addition, steamed “Matnami” has higher polyphenol contents as 3.3 mg/g dw and higher biological activitiesas, which improve the bioactivity in human. The total sugar content was higher, thereby, sweeter than “Yulmi”. It shows lower (68.6℃) initial temperature of starch gelatinization and slower retrogradation process than “Yulmi”.

A clone bank that contained highly productive and superior genotypes of R. coreanus Miq. was assembled in 1998. The clone bank was composed of a collection of 227 clones from 15 regions in Korea. From the clone bank, 198 clones that regularly completed flowering and fruiting were used as official materials for superior tree breeding. To evaluate the flowering and fruiting, the length of the fruiting lateral (LF), the number of flowers per fruiting lateral (NFL) and the number of fruit per fruiting lateral (NFFL) were investigated. Fruits were harvested when they fully ripen and the fruit length (FL), fruit width (FW), the weight of fruit (WF) and soluble solids were measured. In 2001, 17 of the original 227 clones were identified as being the most superior, and these selected genotypes were tested for regional adaptability in four different regions in 2002. Finally, these advanced selections including “Jung-Keum 1” were evaluated for flowering, fruiting and fruit production characteristics from 2002 to 2005. The new cultivar, “Jung-Keum 1” has dark red fruit color and larger fruit size than the contrast clone that was shown mean value for the most characteristics. Selection effect of the new cultivar were shown 130.8% (NFL), 128.3% (NFFL), 123.6% (WF) and 173.3% (yield/individual; YI) superior in comparison with the contrast clone, respectively.
