        Aims: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the possible use of the psycrhotrophic, acid producing, and non-pathogenic microflora of the target chilled food (e.g. imitation crab sticks, ICSs) as time-temperature integrator-based materials for a quality indicator of the food. Methods and Results: Three strains out of four hundred and twelve psychrotrophic LAB colonies isolated from the ICSs were selected and identified as the genus Weissella (16S rDNA gene sequences), Gram-positive, catalase-negative, acid producing, and not hemolytic. Three prototype TTIs were correspondingly developed. A modified imitation crab medium was used as the bacterial nutrient source. The color change of a particular TTI in response to the experimental static and dynamic temperature conditions well represented the microbial growth and spoilage points of the Pseudomonas spp. and LAB which were justified as the spoilage microorganisms of thirty-three commercial ICSs. Conclusions: The psychrotrophic LAB based TTI is likely to be an effective tool for monitoring ICSs shelf life during storage and distribution. Significance and Impact of the Study: This finding suggests that the indigenous microflora of target food can be considered as potential materials for customizing a new TTI particularly for the target food. The food analog is potentially used as the microbial medium.

        PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) is one of the perflourinated organic compound, which persist as a residual compound in the coastal environments. Intertidal mud crab Macrophthalmus japonicus mainly inhabits in coastal and bay ecosystems in Indo-Pacific region including Korea and reflects to environmental changes. In the present study, M. japonicus were exposed to different concentrations of PFOS and various ecotoxicological end-points such as survival rate, elimination of appendages, changes of the crust and internal organ color changes were investigated. Interestingly, the PFOS exposure showed concentration-dependent decrease of survival rate. High PFOS exposure (30 μg L-1) showed a low survival rate of 24% at 168 hours. Further, in comparison with the controls, the rate of elimination of appendages was also considerably increased in a time dependent manner upon PFOS exposure. Notably, with progression of time, an increased exposure to PFOS, test species showed whitening effect in a concentration-dependent manner, whereas the crab crust color was unchanged in the control. In addition, change in internal organs color and their visibility (clarity) observed in PFOS exposed crabs compared to control. Taken together, we suggest, eco-toxicology end-points of M. japonicus exposed to PFOS gave important biological information which could be useful to identify toxic contamination in the marine benthic environments.

        This study was conducted to investigate the attractant substances of different solvent fractions of mackerel and tuna viscera. Mackerel and tuna viscera were extracted with methanol and the resultant were fractionated with n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water. The chemical compounds such as free amino acid, fatty acid, nucleotide related compounds contents were estimated for mackerel, tuna viscera and various fractions. These fractions were also subjected to attracting experiments in water tank to estimate attracting effects. The aqueous fractions of mackerel and tuna viscera showed the highest attraction effect on swimming crab. The major chemical compounds of the aqueous fractions were histidine, taurine, cysteine, glutamic acid, inosine monophosphate (IMP) and inosine (HxR) for mackerel and arginine, glutamic acid, aspartic aid, alanine, IMP and hypoxanthin (Hx). Results indicated that higher polarity compounds, such as amino acid and nucleotide related compounds have higher attraction activities than nonpolar substances such as neutral lipid.

        To investigate the catching efficiency of a biodegradable round trap for a swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus), four types of material (two types of biodegradable net, one type of biodegradable plus polyethylene net and one type of polyethylene net) for traps were used in the field test, and the field tests were carried out 11 times in the Boryeong fishing ground of Korea, 2012∼2013. The catching efficiency of four type traps was analyzed by catch per trap, weight per trap and mean weight per individual of small and large size swimming crab. Statistical Kruskal-Wallis test was carried out to verify the significant difference for the efficiency between types of material. The catch in number of swimming crab was 9,015 and formed about 94.3% of total catch. In the results of catching efficiency of traps, there was a little difference in catch per trap, weight per trap and mean weight per individual of swimming crab in-situ data. But there was no significant difference in catching efficiency between the biodegradable traps and the PE trap (P>0.05), so it’s needed to use widely a biodegradable trap for the conservation and sustainable management of swimming crab resources.

        A series of fishing experiments were carried out in the western coastal waters of Korea from May, 2006 to September, 2007, using gill nets of different mesh sizes (m=101, 121.8, 152.5, 176.8, and 191 mm) to determine the mesh selectivity of gill net for swimming crab, Potunus trituberculatus. The catch species was composed of swimming crab (87%), Thomas's rapa whelk Rapana venosa (5%), arthritic neptune Neptunea cumingi (2%), Japanese swimming crab Charybdis japonica (2%), marbled sole Pleuronectes yokohamae (1%), pen shell Atrina pectinata, ocellate spot skate Okamejei kenojei, and so on. The carapace length (CL) of each swimming crab caught in the experimental nets was measured. Sponge crab (egg-bearing female crab) was appeared from the end of June to August in the coastal waters. The master selection curve was estimated by applying the extended Kitahara's method. The selection curve showed that the gill nets of larger mesh size allowed more crabs of small carapace size to escape. The optimum value (CL/m) was 0.645 and the CL/m was estimated to be 0.301, 0.354, 0.391, 0.422, and 0.450 when the retention probabilities were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, respectively.

        이 글은 지방자치제의 시행으로 변화한 한국 사회의 여러 지형 가운데 특산품의 사회적 생산 과정에 관심을 두고 있다. 지방자치제 이후 대부분의 지역에서는 인물, 역사적 사건, 민속, 경관, 특산품 등을 지역 상징화하며 홀로서기를 시도했다. 이 과정에서 지역간의 이해관계가 발생할 때에는 지역과 친연성을 강조하기 위한 다양한 담론들을 생산했다.이 글에서 관심을 갖는 ‘원조대게’ 논쟁의 경우 영덕과 울진에서 지역의 특산품인 대게를 상징화하는 과정에서 불거졌다. ‘원조대게’ 논쟁에서 유리한 고지를 점하기 위해 두 지역에서 펼친 전략은 크게 ‘역사만들기’, ‘마을만들기’, ‘축제만들기’로 요약된다. 먼저 역사만들기 과정에서는 문헌, 민속, 구술, 생활사 등을 발굴하거나 재해석하며 대게의 역사성과 정통성을 드러내려 했다. 다음으로 마을만들기 과정에서는 역사만들기를 통해 생산한 성과들을 바탕으로 ‘대게의 고향’을 만들면서 신화적 공간을 구축했다. 이어서 축제만들기의 과정에서는 각종 담론들을 담아내고 새로운 전략을 선보이는 장으로 활용했다. 이처럼 두 지역에서 대게를 품안으로 끌어들이기 위해 펼친 행보를 통해 특산품이 사회적 생산과 의미화 과정을 살필 수 있을 것이다.

        To study the catching efficiency of biodegradable trammel net for swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus), three types (biodegradable, monofilament and multifilament) of trammel nets were used in the field test, and the tests were carried out 16 times with two different mesh sizes (105mm and 160mm) in the Yeonpyeong fishing ground of Korea, 2009~2011. The catching efficiency of three type nets was analyzed by catch in number, catch in weight and average weight per individual of small and large size swimming crab by net types and mesh sizes. Statistical T-test was also carried out to verify the efficiency between the three types of nets. The results are as follows. The catch in number of swimming crab was 24,667 and formed about 81.0% of total catch. Of all swimming crab catch, small swimming crabs with less than 64mm in carapace length which is a prohibited landing size by law formed 48.1%, larger swimming crabs with more than 64mm in carapace length which is a landing size formed 51.9%. In 105mm mesh size trammel net test, the catch share in number of small size swimming crab by biodegradable trammel net was 47.5% in comparison with multifilament trammel net and 74.2% in comparison with monofilament trammel net, so biodegradable trammel net has more protective effects on small size swimming crab than other types of trammel nets. The protective effects for small size swimming crab by biodegradable trammel net was 25.8~52.5% in comparison with other types of trammel nets. The catch share in weight of large size swimming crab by biodegradable trammel net was 98.3% in comparison with multifilament trammel net and 92.3% in comparison with monofilament trammel net, so biodegradable trammel net has a similar catch efficiency to multifilament trammel net. The results of 160mm mesh size trammel net test have shown similar results of 105mm mesh size trammel net test. This study shows that biodegradable trammel net is a more useful fishing gear than multifilament and monofilament trammel net because biodegradable trammel net has lower catch rate than other types of nets in small size swimming crab and similar catch rate than multifilament trammel net which is a well used net by fishermen.

        본 연구는 금강하구둑과 관련하여 금강에 서식하는 참게(Eriocheir sinensis)의 이동과 산란을 알아보기 위해 2007년 5월부터 2009년 1월까지 금강 수계에서 조사하였다. 참게의 유생은 5월에 기수역에서 채집되었으나, 이후 치해로 변태하여 소상하는 개체들은 채집되지 않았다. 산란을 위해 참게들이 금강하구에 도달하는 시기는 9월 초순이었고, 3월부터 4월 사이에 산란을 하는 것으로 확인되었다. 연구 결과 기수에서 부화한 참게의 유생이 치해로 변태하여 담수로 이동하는 통로를 만들어 준다면, 금강 수계의 자연산 참게 복원이 제한적이나마 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

        Currently, environment-friendly and sustainable fisheries are one of the major issues among fisheries authorities. A variety of alternative management policies and projects are going on to enhance fisheries management systems and fishery resources such as a TAC management program and a VDS (Vessel Day Scheme) management scheme for distant water fishing nations in Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) convention area. These kinds of efforts among fisheries management authorities are aimed at limiting fishing capacity or fishing power. In terms of fisheries management, Fishing capacity and fishing power have increased the importance of the impact on a fishery and level of the resources. Increased fishing capacity and fishing power have caused not only depletion of fisheries resource, but also additional fishing cost. therefore, there is a clear need for authorities to manage fishing capacity and fishing power. It is also help ensure the conservation and sustainability of the fishery resources. Because of lack of data, absolute fishing power is difficulty to measure. The notion of relative fishing power is frequently used. In this study, relative fishing power was assessed using Mastuda (1991) method for fishing power index. The raw data for assessment was based on fishermen's logbook data from sampled fishing vessels in coastal snow crab gillnet fishery. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method was used to assess fishing capacity. DEA is a linear programming methodology to measure the efficiency of a set of entities called Decision-Making Units (DMUs). It was recommended by FAO for assessing capacity in fisheries.

        현재 저온유통만 허가되어 있으며 저장유통기간이 짧은 게맛어묵에 레토르트 살균기술과 반응표면분석 법을 도입하여 기존의 풍미나 품질에 손상됨 없이 상온유통과 장기저장이 가능한 게맛어묵을 제조하기 위하여 가열살균기술의 최적화 조건을 구명하였고, 본 레토르트 살균처리가 게맛어묵의 품질특성에 미치 는 영향에 대하여 검토하였다. 반응표면분석의 독립변수는 살균량 (F0-value)과 가열온도로 하였으며, 이 들의 영향을 받는 가열살균 후의 품질인자, 즉 종속변수는 전단력, 백색도 및 관능적 조직감으로 나타내 었다. 레토르트 살균이 게맛어묵의 품질 및 전반적인 식품성분의 변화에 미치는 영향을 검토한 결과, F0-value 5분 이하의 가열살균에서는 F0-value보다는 가열온도가 게맛어묵의 품질 변화에 미치는 영향 이 큰 것으로 나타났으며, F0-value 2.6분 이상으로 가열살균할 경우 게맛어묵의 무균성이 확인되었다. 반응표면분석 program으로 설정한 레토르트 게맛어묵의 최적 가열살균조건은 전단력의 경우 가열온도는 115.7℃, F0-value 3.3분, 백색도는 가열온도 116.1℃, F0-value 3.8분, 그리고 관능적 조직감의 최대화 조건은 가열온도 115.8℃, F0-value 3.3분이었고, 이 3가지 품질요소를 모두 고려한 multiple response optimization 반응조건은 가열온도 117.5℃, F0-value는 3.3분이었다.

        The main purpose of this research is to analyze economic feasibility of biodegradable sonw crab gill net model project. The results of benefit/cost analysis show that use of the biodegradable gear is economically feasible. Assuming that the rate of gill net lost is 5 percent, net present value was estimated 311,898,282-590,533,375won, benefit-cost ratio 1.816-1.923 and internal rate of return 7.96-10.59%. The development and diffusion of biodegradable fishing gear appear to make a significant contribution to fisheries resource conservation and marine ecosystem protection. In addition, biodegradable gear production firms may have a good opportunity of exporting it to other coastal states, depending on the progress of WTO subsidy negotiation.
