        The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of fad dieting as a method to lose weight among male and female college students. A total of 710 students participated in this study. Fad dieting was surveyed using a questionnaire about 11 fad diet methods. The mean age of the subjects was 21.4 years for males and 20.4 years for females. The proportion of students who had experience trying to lose weight was 52.8% for males and 78.6% for females (p<0.001). The diet method employed by the highest number of participants was the half meal diet (27.6% for males, 43.9% for females), followed by the cereal diet (8.8% for males, 43.9% for females), fasting (9.9% for males, 21.4% for females), and the chicken breast diet (13.1% for males, 9.2% for females). The female students were more likely than the males to try fad diets other than the chicken breast diet and the Atkins diet. The most frequent side effect of fad dieting was the yo-yo effect, followed by binge eating, weakness, anemia, and so on. The proportion of students who indicated that nutrition education is needed for healthy dieting was 39.1% for males and 45.4% for females. From these results, we concluded that a high percentage of college students attempt to lose weight through fad diets, with some gender differences. Therefore, in the future, nutrition education programs should focus more attention on providing healthy dieting methods to young college students to help them lose weight.

        Artificial insect diets are a crucial factor of many insect rearing systems for research purposes. Three different diets were prepared by formulating variations of the standard diet using various proportions of dried potato powder and wheat germ. The larvae were reared on these diets under long day conditions (25℃, 14L). Fitness parameters including larval development, immature survival, pupal weight, pupation, adult emergence were measured to evaluate the performance of Agrius convovuli. The percentage of pupation varied considerably, with significant differences among diets, on which a maximum pupation percentage of 95.0% was observed. The larvae reared from hatching on diet A completed larval development in 29.1d, and adult emergence occurred on day 17.6d. An analysis of variance showed significant differences among the three diets in the mean pupal weight. These results indicated that A. convovuli adapted well to the artificial diet A and successive rearing conditions. The diet A could serve as viable alternative to natural host plants for consecutive rearing of the insect. The successful development of the diet and rearing technique provides a very useful tool for refining hawk moth.

        Both juvenile and adult nutritional environment (e.g. macronutrient composition) can alter developmental trajectories, independently or interactively, to shape behaviour in later life. Moreover, variation in macronutrient composition across life stages can lead to among-individual covariation between behaviours (‘behavioural syndromes’) as well as among-individual variation in single behaviours (‘personality’). In this study, we used field crickets Gryllus bimaculatus and a split-brood experimental design to compare the expression of behaviours, their among- and within-individual variances across nutritional conditions. We showed that effect of macronutrient compositions on the mean level of behaviour was generally associated with the change in variance components in the behaviour. However, sometimes variance components in behaviours changed independently from the diet effect on mean level. Interestingly, we also found that diet effect on behavioural syndromes could be independent from diet effect on the mean level of behaviour and its variance components. As a consequence, we suggest that nutritional condition can assert a direct influence on the covariation between behaviours. This implies that expressions of genes with pleiotropic effects differ in their directions between nutritional environments.

        Lipoxygenase(LOX) 결여 콩으로 제조한 두부의 급이가 5주간의 고지방-콜레스테롤 식이성 흰쥐에서 간 조직과 분변 지질 함량 및 생체 내 항산화계에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. 실험군은 정상군, 고지방-콜레스테롤 급이군(HFC), 고지방-콜레스테롤 식이+두부 급이군(태광 두부 급이군, HFC-T1; 개척#1 두부 급이군, HFC-T2; 진양 두부 급이군, HFC-T3)으로 구분하였다. 두부의 콜레스테롤 흡착활성은 개척#1 두부가 타 시료에 비해 유의적으로 높았다. 두부 급이군의 비만지수는 대조군에 비해 통계적인 유의차는 없었으나, 개척#1 두부 급이군(HFC-T2)의 비만지수가 가장 낮았다. 간 조직의 총 지질 함량은 정상군에 비해 대조군이 5.9배 증가되었으며, 개척#1 두부 급이군(HFC-T2)은 대조군에 비해 유의적으로 감소되었다. 대조군에 비해 중성지방 함량은 개척#1, 진양 두부 급이군에서 유의적으로 낮았으며, 총 콜레스테롤 함량은 두부 급이군에서 모두 유의적으로 감소되었다. 두부 급이군의 분변 중 총 지질 함량은 대조군에 비해 유의적으로 증가되었으나, 두부의 종류에 따른 유의차는 없었다. 중성지방 함량은 개척#1 두부 급이군에서 가장 많았고, 총 콜레스테롤의 배출량은 대조군에 비해 두부 급이군에서 다소 증가되었으나, 통계적인 유의차는 없었다. 지질과산화물 함량은 대조군에 비해 HFC-T2 및 HFC-T3군에서 유의적으로 감소되었다. DPPH 라디칼 소거활성은 HFC-T2군에서 정상군과 유사한 수준까지 상승하였다. 간 조직에서 SOD 활성은 대조군에 비해 두부 급이군에서 1.4~2.2배 증가되었으며, HFC-T3군에서 활성이 가장 높았다. Catalase, GSH-Px 및 UDPGT 활성은 개척#1 두부 급이군에서 유의적으로 높았다. LOX 결여 콩으로 제조한 두부의 섭취는 고지방-콜레스테롤 식이에 대해 체내 지질 수준 저하 및 항산화 활성에 긍정적인 효과를 가질 것으로 생각된다.

        Cladosiphon okamuranus is edible brown algae cultured commercially and massively at Okinawa coast. Dietary fiber occupying most of C. okamuranus isn't digested and absorbed by digestive enzymes of human. But it is known to prevent and treat constipation as metabolic disease. This study was to investigate the effects of dietary fiber extracted from C. okamuranus on the damage of liver and the blood cholesterol level in the high fat dietfed rats. The effects were measured by the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (ALT), alanine aminotransferase (AST), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) in sera. The levels of ALT, AST, TC, TG and LDL were significantly reduced in the C. okamuranus-treated group compared with the high fat diet group. But HDL level was markedly increased. The results showed that the dietary fiber extracts from C. okamuranus have the inhibitive effects of cholesterol biosynthesis in the high fat diet-fed rats.

        만성 췌장염은 심한 췌장 실질의 파괴로 인하여 통증, 외분비 및 내분비 기능 장애가 발생하는 질환이다. 만성 췌장염의 임상 양상은 심하고 지속적이며 잘 조절되지 않는 복통과 흡수장애, 당뇨병을 특징으로 한다. 만성 췌장염은 난치성 복통 외에도 원인, 외분비기능, 내분비기능 모두가 일련의 톱니바퀴처럼 맞물려 있다고 생각해야 한다. 단순하게 복통 만을 조절하려고 하거나 흡수장애 만을 고려한 치료는 또 다른 합병증을 유발 할 수 있다. 반면, 원인, 통증, 외분비기능, 내분비 기능을 모두 고려한 다중 접근은 환자의 증상만이 아 니라 삶의 질을 회복시켜 주고 새로운 삶의 원동력을 제공할 수 있다.

        Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease of the pancreas. Acute abdominal pain is the most common symptom, and increased concentrations of serum amylase and lipase confirm the diagnosis. Pancreatic injury is mild in 80% of patients, who recover without complications. The remaining patients have a severe disease with local and systemic complications. Acute pancreatitis is a hypercatabolic state resulting in rapid loss of body weight, fat and protein. Nutritional support is an integral part of patient care and is started early in the course of disease. Patients with mild to moderate disease (80% of patients) do not require enteral nutrition (EN) or parenteral nutrition(PN), as they will begin oral feeding within 4 days of presentation. Nutritional support is needed for severe disease, EN is preferred over PN, and use PN when EN is contraindicated or not feasible. Most groups have used nasojejunal feeding, which has difficulties in maintenance of the tube position and patency. Nasogastric feeding in severe AP has shown little difference in terms of clinical outcome from nasojejunal feeding. In this review, we review the role, methods, and clinical implications of nutritional supports in acute pancreatitis and also present recently recommended standard guidelines.

        담석증은 흔한 소화기질환 중 하나이며, 비만, 여성, 장기 간의 금식, 빠른 체중감량, 총 경정맥영양 등 담석발생의 다양한 위험인자가 알려져 있다. 증상이 있는 담석의 치료는 담낭절제술이 일반적인 치료이다. 무증상 혹은 경한 증상을 보이는 담석증에서 담즙산제제인 UDCA가 담도산통의 유발이나 급성 담낭염, 급성 췌장염과 같은 합병증 발생을 낮춘다고 알려져 있으나, 대규모 전향적 연구가 필요한 실정이 다. 담석, 특히 콜레스테롤 담석의 발생에 영향을 미치는 식이요소들로는 고콜레스테롤, 포화지방산, 정제된 탄수화물, 설탕 들이 있다. 예방적 효과를 보이는 식이는 불포화지방산, 섬유질, 커피, 적당양의 알콜 등이 있다. 또한 특정 음식 에 대한 과민반응으로 담석 증상이 발혈 될 수 있으며, 그 외 영양 첨가물로 비타민 C, 레시틴, 철분 등이 영향을 미칠 수 있고, 식물 terpenes 복합물도 도움이 될 수 있다.

        ◉ 목적 : 감각방어가 있는 자폐 범주성 장애 청소년에게 감각식이 가정프로그램을 실시하여 감각조절과 사회적 능력에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. ◉ 연구방법 : 연구대상자는 감각방어를 가진 만 15세의 자폐 범주성 장애 청소년 1명이다. 보호자 인터뷰와 평가를 통해 대상자에게 맞는 감각식이 가정프로그램을 구성하여, 보호자 교육을 통해 대상자의 가정에서 한 회당 30분씩 하루 3회의 감각식이 가정프로그램을 총 8주간 진행하였다. 본 연구는 개별 실험 연구방법(single subject experimental research design)인 ABA로 설계되었다. 대상자의 사회성을 저하시키는 주요 문제였던 귀막는 횟수와 시간은 총 14회(기초선 기간 3회기, 중재 기간 8회기, 재기초선 기간 3회기) 측정하였으며, 감각식이 가정프로그램 중재 전과 후에 청소년/성인 감각프로파일(Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile: AASP)과 사회성숙도검사(Social Maturity Scale)를 실시하였다. ◉ 연구결과 : 감각식이 가정프로그램 중재 후, 귀막는 횟수와 시간이 의미있게 감소하였다. AASP 검사의 low registration은 정상범주에 속하게 되었으며, sensory seeking, sensory sensitivity, sensation avoiding영역의 점수가 각각 정상범주에 가깝게 변화하였고 사회성숙도 검사결과 사회연령과 사회지수가 향상되었다. ◉ 결론 : 감각식이 가정프로그램을 통해 자폐 범주성 장애 청소년의 감각방어가 완화되었으며 감각 및 감정의 조절이 향상됨을 확인할 수 있었다.

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of calcium (Ca) and vitamin D (vit. D) levels on metabolism of various minerals such as Ca, P, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Cr. The comparison was made on the rats that were placed on diet containing powdered skim milk with different Ca and vit. D levels for 5 weeks. A total of 42 5-week-old Sprague- Dawley rats were divided into 7 groups as follows: Control group consisted of normal Ca and normal vit. D (0.5% Ca, 1,000 IU vit. D); Experimental groups were divided into low (0.25%) and high (1.0%) calcium levels; and vit. D group was divided into low (10 IU), normal (1,000 IU), and high (5,000 IU) subgroups. The weight gain and food efficiency ratios of the rats were not significantly different with increasing dietary Ca levels. The absorption rates of 7 minerals (Ca, P, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Cr) were significantly decreased with increasing dietary Ca levels. Also, fecal excretion of P significantly increased with increasing dietary vit. D levels (p<0.05), and urine excretion of Fe was significantly increased with increasing dietary vit. D levels (p<0.001). The result indicated that higher Ca intake affected on bioavailability of other minerals, due to interactions among minerals in the process of intestinal absorption. However, vitamin D intake had no effect on bioavailability of several minerals. Therefore, it could be suggested that adequate Ca intake is important for balance of the minerals.

        The diet composition of juvenile Korean piscivorous chub, Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis were studied using 277 specimens collected from January to December 2004 in the surf zone of Nakdong river estuary. The size of Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis ranged from 2.6 to 9.1 cm in standard length (SL). Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis was carnivore that consumes mainly amphipods and insects. Its diet also included small quantities of polychaetes, fishes, and algae and plants. Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis showed ontogenetic diet change. Smaller individuals (< 4 cm SL) mainly consumed amphipods. The portion of these prey items decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease was paralleled with increased consumption of larger preys such as polychaetes and fishes. Insects were preyed moderated values in all size classes. Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis diet also showed diel change with consuming more on amphipods and polychaetes during day.

        팥나방 (Matsumuraeses phaseoli) (나비목: 잎말이나방과)은 한국에서 팥 (Vigna angularis)과 녹두 (Vigna radiata)의 꽃과 꼬투리를 가해하는 주요 해충의 하나인데, 수원지방에서 이 곤충의 발육 특성과 월동태를 추정할 목적으로 야외 (37°16′N 126°59′E 35ASL) 조건에서 인공사육을 통해 발육과정이 관찰되었다. 갓 부화한 유충 집단들은 약 14일 간격으로 인공사료를 이용하여 1년 이상 야외에서 사육되었는데, 봄에서 고온인 여름철로 감에 따라 발육기간이 짧아지고, 가을철로 감에 따라 다시 길어지는 경향이었다. 유충 혹은 번데기 발육에서 여름철 하면 현상은 발견되지 않았다. 2008년 10월 8일 사육이 시작된 집단은 번데기 상태로 월동하였는데, 6%의 생존율을 보이며 이듬해 4월말 우화하였다. 10월 23일에 사육이 시작된 집단은 노숙유충태로 월동하였는데, 이듬해 4월말 용화하여, 5월 초중순에 2%의 최종 생존율을 보이며 우화하였다. 한편 실내에서 사육되어 5령까지 발육된 유충들을 11월과 2월 사이에 야외로 옮겨 사육하였을 때, 생존하는 개체들은 발견하지 못하였다. 항온조건 (25℃, 15L:9D)에서 갓 산란된 알을 11월과 12월 중에 야외로 옮겨 유지하였을 때, 월동하여 부화하는 알은 발견되지 않았다. 또 항온조건에서 갓 우화한 성충들을 11월과 12월 중 야외로 옮겨 사육하였을 때, 모두 사망하였다. 이 결과로 팥나방은 한국의 수원지방에서 10월 중 부화한 유충들이 유충과 번데기로 월동할 수 있는 것으로 추정되었다.

        Korean style DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) and a dietary education program for sodium reduction were developed. Reduced sodium diets (15 and 30% reductions) were developed from general diets for 3 consecutive weeks from Monday through Saturday. Subjects (19 total) were classified into two groups according to dietary education. Experimental period was from June 24 to July 23, 2012. Total sum of adaptation scores for low sodium diets significantly increased in the group that underwent dietary education compared to that without (p<0.05). After the experiment, both groups showed significantly increased values in terms of food group balance, sodium-related nutrition knowledge, attitude, and practice by paired t-test. Especially, group that underwent dietary education showed significantly higher values for attitudes by ANCOVA pre-test as a variation (p<0.01). For the results of the nutrient intake survey, group that underwent dietary education showed significantly increased values for dietary fiber (p<0.01), vitamin A (p<0.001), vitamin K (p<0.001), vitamin C (p<0.01), Folic acid (p<0.001), vitamin B12 (p<0.01), calcium (p<0.01), iron (p<0.05), and zinc (p<0.05) and significantly decreased values for sodium (p<0.05) and chloride (p<0.005). Subjects adapted to reduced sodium diets showed apparent improvements in sodium-related knowledge, attitude, practice and intake of nutrient, and these improvements were even higher in the group that underwent dietary education compared to that without. Thus, adaptation to low sodium diet combined with dietary education can improve dietary habits.

        Soy and fermented soy are popular and recognized as a health food among Koreans. Since soy proteins are known to be protease resistant, even to pepsin and pancreatin, it is hypothesized that soy proteins may interact with the intestinal tract and trigger certain physiological reactions. To test this hypothesis, mice were fed diets supplemented with soy, Chunkukjang, or casein. The differentially expressed proteins were analyzed using 2-D gels and identified by peptide mass fingerprinting using mass spectrometry. The majority of the differentially expressed proteins could be functionally grouped into metabolic enzymes and calcium-binding proteins. The differential protein expression by the soy-fed groups was also verified based on a representative protein, tropomyosin, using a Western blotting analysis. In addition, the soy-fed groups exhibited a taller villi structure. Therefore, this study suggests that soy proteins can be an effective nutrient and physiological stimulant for the intestines.

        This study was conducted to develop a Han-sik database as well as to assess the effects of Han-sik on dietary quality among Koreans. The Han-sik database was developed by a focus group composed of food and nutrition specialists considering the results of Han-sik perception surveys conducted in previous studies for frequently consumed dishes. Among the 1,322 dish items identified in the 4th (2007-2009) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 973 items (73.6%) were classified as Han-sik. Han-sik usage was defined as the percentage of Han-sik items of all individually consumed dish items in the dietary data of 22,113 subjects who participated in a 24-hour diet recall in the 4th (2007-2009) KNHANES. Dietary quality was evaluated based on adherence to the Korean Food Guidance System (KFGS), which was calculated as the percentage of the number of servings consumed in each food group out of recommended servings according to age and sex. Mean usage of Han-sik was 80.1% and was higher in older age groups, rural areas, as well as in households at the lowest income level. Han-sik usage was also higher on weekdays as well as for breakfast. Adherence to the KFGS was significantly higher for grains, meat · fish · egg · beans, vegetables, and fruits (p<0.001) but lower for milk · dairy products and oils · fats · sugars (p<0.001) across the quartiles of Han-sik usage. The results of this study indicate that Han-sik usage is high among Koreans. Further studies are needed to update the Han-sik database as well as investigate the association between health-related factors and Han-sik use.

        Century-old nutrition and health concepts can be revived and applied in the modern age in the forms of newly developed menus, recipes, and lifestyle education. Current medical nutrition therapy concepts were first described in the Chosun Dynasty (1392-1897) in Korea based on the philosophy that food and medicine originate from the same source, which is known as ‘food as medicine’. Recognizing the importance of culture, tradition, local diet, and lifestyle on health and medical nutrition therapy, we tried to rediscover traditional Korean approaches towards food consumption and nutrition through systematic review of the literature and developed contemporary menus accordingly. The medical nutrition therapy prescriptions described in ‘Shikryochanyo’ (1460) by the Chosun Dynasty’s royal physician Soonyi Jeao cover 45 different diseases. In this project, we developed contemporary menus for those disease models that are most prevalent in modern society. Menus developed with foods that are readily available today were evaluated for their nutritional content and adequacy using a computer-aided nutritional analysis program (CAN pro 3.0, developed by the Korean Nutrition Society for comparison with RDA for Koreans). Therefore, century-old nutrition and health concepts can be revived and applied in modern society as newly developed menus recipes and lifestyle education.

        The aim of this study was to evaluate the biological mechanism of orally administered fly maggot ethanol extracts (EM) on hypocholesterolemic in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet. SDS male rats were divided into four groups (EM dose control=0, 5.0, 7.0, and 9.0 mg/100 g BW) and were treated for 6 weeks. EM groups revealed a significant reduction in serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol when compared with the control group. HMG-CoA reductase activity in EM groups were significantly lower than those of the control group, but total sterol, neutral sterol, and bile acid excretion were significantly increased in EM groups when compared with the control group. It was discovered that EM suppress the expression of SREBP-1⍺ and SREBP-2 mRNA in the liver tissues of high-cholesterol diet fed rats, while simultaneously increasing the expression of PPAR⍺ mRNA. This finding indicates that EM has a hypocholesterolemic effects in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet, by regulating cholesterol metabolism-related biochemical parameters and SREBP-1⍺ SREPB-2 and PPAR⍺ gene expression.

        The effect of an artificial diet on the developmental rate, a life history parameter, was examined for the swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus. Artificial insect diets are an essential component of many insect rearing systems that produce insects for research purposes. Complex agar-gelled diets are generally prepared in large batches and used shortly after preparation because the degradation of perishable diet ingredients, such as vitamins and fatty acids, can adversely affect insect quality (Brewer F D 1984). However, the timing of diet preparation may be inconvenient and large batches wasteful if the unused, excess diet is discarded. This study showed that if the artificial diet was fed during the larval stage, the larval and pupal developmental periods, the percentage of pupation, and the pupal weight generally did not differ significantly among the five artificial diets evaluated. The percentage of pupation varied considerably, with no significant differences among diets except for diet C. A maximum pupation percentage of 83% was observed on diet C. Pellet-type diets were investigated with the aim of developing a more easily prepared diet. The extrusion of the artificial diet under high temperature and pressure may induce desirable chemical and physical changes in the extruded product. The purpose of the present study was to develop an artificial diet for rearing P. xuthus.

        This study was conducted to investigate the effect of biological membrane transfer modifier, lysophospholipd (LPLs) on the parameters from in vitro rumen simulated fermentation. Commercially available LPLs product (LipidolTM) was supplemented into experimental diets which consisted of orchard grass and concentrate diet (60:40) in different levels (0.1%, 0.3% and 0.5%). Then in vitro rumen simulated fermentation was performed. Although, a declining trend of pH was found in treatments, all pH values were detected in a range relevant to normal rumen fermentation. Gas production, ammonia nitrogen and total VFA production were greatly influenced by the supplementation of LPLs. All parameters were increased along with increased levels of LPLs in diet. As a result, 0.1% of LipidolTM is recommended based on the determined in vitro rumen fermentative parameters in this study.

        This study was carried out to investigate the effects of feeding the broilers that are exposed to extreme heat stress by control of inverse lighting times with night restricted feeding of extreme heat diet(EHD1, 2: extreme heat diet) containing different amount of soy oil, molasses, amino acids and vitamin C on short chain fatty acid and blood lipid profile. 300 broiler chickens(Abaica strain) were randomized into four dietary treatment groups according to a randomized block design on the day they were hatched. The four dietary treatment groups were: T1(EHD 1, 10:00~19:00 Dark, 19:00〜10:00 Light), T2(EHD 2, 10:00〜19:00 Dark, 19:00〜 10:00 Light), T3(EHD 1, 09:00〜18:00 Dark, 18:00〜09:00 Light), T4(EHD 2, 09:00〜18:00 Dark, 18:00~09:00 Light). The body weight gain of the broilers was highest in T2, and high in order T1, T4, T3(p<0.05). Weights of the lymphoid organ, thymus and bursa of Fabricius were high in T1, T2 as compared to T3, T4 but spleen was lower in T4 than T1, T2, T3(p<0.05). Blood triglyceride, total cholesterol and glucose were higher in T1, T2 than T3, T4(p<0.05). LDL-C was high in orderT4, T3, T2, T1 but HDL-C showed the opposite trend(p<0.05). Blood concentrations of IgG, IgG and IgM were higher in T1, T2 than inT3, T4, but the corticosterone concentration decreased significantly in them. In T1 and T2, Lactobacillus in the feces increased, but total aerobic bacteria, E.coli, coliform bacteria was decreased rather significantly, compared with those in T3 and T4(p<0.05). Concentrations of acetic acid, propionic acid and total SCFA in cecum were high in order T2, T1, T3, T4, but butyric acid, isobutyric acid, valeric acid, isovaleric acid were lower in T1, T2 than in T3, T4 (p<0.05).
